Abstract:Recently, vegetable oils and their derivatives have been investigated for the potential to serve as environmentally beneficial lubricants, because of their biodegradability, renewability, and high-quality lubrication performance in comparison to fossil commercial lubricants. So far, numerous researches have used edible and non-edible oil sources for the production of bio-lubricants. However, the use of edible oils for industrial uses may cause scarcity of cooking oil for food, thus making non-edible oil a viable source. In addition, the reuse of cooking oil and agro-industrial byproducts is an alternative approach to produce bio-lubricant, which can lower the lubricant pro-duction costs, meanwhile, assist in waste management, and discourage the illegal recycling and marketing of waste cooking oil (WCO) as renewable cooking oil. Therefore, this review examined the zero-waste approach involving the enzymatic conversion process for bio-lubricant production using non-edible oil and agro-industrial wastes. It also reviewed the use of biocatalyst such as a lipase in enzymatic transesterification substituting other chemically mediated transesterification processes. The type of lipases used, their optimum reaction conditions, and the maximum product yields were tabulated in respect of non-edible oil and agro-industrial waste oil sources. Moreover, physicochemical properties of bio-lubricants, along with their enhanced application fields were further highlighted.
