Abstract:The bio-lubricant from the agro-waste resource is a promising substitute to the petroleum-based lubricants, which conforms to waste utilization and sustainable development. In this work, a high performance biolubricant was obtained by dihydroxylation modifying the extract from the abandon aerial parts of Codonopsis pilosula. This biolubricant exhibits high resistance to thermal decomposition till 298.8 degrees C and excellent lubricity within the temperature range of 50-250 degrees C, characterized by the low friction coefficients of 0.108-0.129 and wear rates of 10-8-10-7 mm3/Nm. These excellent properties are superior and comparable to other biolubricant and mineral oils, resulting from the high adsorption ability of diol onto the solid frictional interfaces that forms a thick lu-bricity carbon film demonstrated by the transmission electron microscope. Due to the excellent thermal-stability and wide temperature lubricity, this biolubricant can be applied in the open mechanical systems like chainsaw and metal machining in agricultural and manufacturer industries.

Abstract:Mineral oil-derived lubricants, extracted from fossil fuels, account for approximately 90% of the lubricant market. A large proportion of these lubricants end up in the environment through usage, spillage, and disposal, leading to contamination of aquatic systems, ecosystems, and agricultural lands. To address this, new regulations were released (e.g. Vessel General Permit 2013) to promote the use of Environmentally Acceptable Lubricants (EALs) over conventional, toxic, non-biodegradable mineral oils. Today, the range of EAL is limited, particularly affecting the maritime sector. Since 2013, the variety and effectiveness of EALs have improved, but further advancements and cost reductions are essential. This study focuses on developing sustainable bio-based additives from microbial processes to enhance EALs. These additives, sourced through fermentation, avoid using fossil fuels and do not require arable land, preserving water resources and food production areas. The research reveals that yeast, high in sulfur and phosphorus, and microbial oils, mainly carboxylic acids, effectively stabilize EAL formulations, reducing friction and wear in water-based lubricants. Microbial oils are superior in reducing friction, while yeast offers better wear protection. This study opens the possibility of incorporating various bio-based products into EALs, providing a sustainable, environmentally friendly option.

Abstract:In the pursuit of alternatives for conventional diesel, sourced from non-renewable fossil fuel, biodiesel has gained attentions for its intrinsic benefits. However, the commercial production process for biodiesel is still not sufficiently competitive. This review analyses microalgal lipid, one of the important sources of biodiesel, and its cultivation techniques with recent developments in the technical aspects. In fact, the microalgal lipids are the third generation feedstock, used for biodiesel production after its benefits outweigh that of edible vegetable oils (first generation) and non-edible oils (second generation). The critical factors influencing microalgal growth and its lipid production and accumulation are also discussed. Following that is the internal enhancement for cellular lipid production through genetic engineering. Moreover, the microalgae cultivation data modelling was also rationalized, with a specific focus on growth kinetic models that allow for the prediction and optimization of lipid production. Finally, the machine learning and environmental impact analysis are as well presented as important aspects to consider in fulfilling the prime objective of commercial sustainability to produce microalgal biodiesel.

Abstract:The environmental problems caused by using fossil fuels to sustain the present level of industrialization have kindled worldwide interest in developing sustainable lubrication technologies to reduce the impact of friction and wear, estimated at 23% of the energy currently produced globally. Besides good lubricity, such technologies must exhibit biodegradability, renewability, and environmental innocuousness. The present survey delves into state-of-the-art biolubricant formulations based on vegetable oils, ionic liquids, aqueous solutions, and glycerol. We focus on their tribological performance as standalone or whole formulations containing additives. Current investigations include several ecological nanoparticles that are tribologically functional. We include metallic nanoparticles and their oxides, carbon allotropes, sulfides, and h-BN. The development of biomass-based lubrication technologies is an essential step toward industry sustainability. It offers the potential for economic and energy savings and is a valuable addition to present global actions against climate change and pollution.

Abstract:Bio-based lubricants have gained prominence over conventional petroleum-based oils, progressively over the last two decades as biolubricants. This trend is observed in almost every industry that has been dependent on lubricants and oils irrespective of their applications. Factors that initiated and fueled this trend vary from stringent government regulations over petroleum-based oils to the high passed depletion of oil reserves. But the most concerning factor that has fast-tracked the need for biolubricants is the toxic and harmful effect of used petroleum oils has on the environment and ecological factors. It is estimated that nearly 50% of all lubricants produced are introduced to the environment which has spurred the interest in biolubricants. This review discusses various types of eco-friendly bio-lubrications that will become a sustainable and economical alternative to the conventional petroleum-based lubricants by being sourced from renewable resources. Biolubricants are seen to be feasible and versatile lubricants with higher lubricity, lower volatility, higher shear stability, higher viscosity index, higher load-carrying capacity, and superior detergency and dispersancy when compared to petroleum-based lubricants. The review also investigates in detail the poor thermal-oxidative stability, biological deterioration, their poor solidification at low temperatures, and hydrolytic instability as well as mechanical and chemical enhancements that seek to rectify these issues. Furthermore, economical and legislative landscape of biolubricants is discussed.

Abstract:In recent years, fluctuating global fossil fuel market prices and growing concern about environmental pollution have increased efforts to obtain novel value-added products from renewable agricultural biomass. To this end, a wide variety of triacylglycerols (edible and non-edible oils and fats) and their derivatives (free fatty acids or monoalkyl esters) stand out as promising feedstocks for the production of biolubricant base stocks, due to their biodegradability, excellent physicochemical properties, and sustainable nature. These raw materials can be transformed into biolubricants using chemical or biochemical (lipases) catalysts, with the enzymatic production of biolubricants using lipases as catalysts being recognized as an environmentally friendly approach. The present mini-review highlights recent advances in this field, published in the last three years. The different chemical modification processes used to develop a wide variety of industrial biolubricant base stocks are comprehensively reviewed, with exploration of future prospects for industrial production via the enzymatic route. This study contributes to the current state-of-the-art, identifying relevant research questions and providing important technical information for new applications of lipases in oleochemical manufacturing industries.

Abstract:The increase in the price of crude oil, the environmental impact, or the depletion of fossil resources has increased the need for bio-based alternatives. This has led to the search for renewable, biodegradable, and environmentally friendly raw materials to obtain lubricants that meet these characteristics. This review deals with the state of the art of biolubricants along with their most common raw materials and molecular structures, processes of chemical modification of bio-oils, as well as the relationship between their structural features and physicochemical/tribological properties. This review concludes that the production of fatty acid alkyl esters from vegetable oils is the most promising chemical route to produce a wide range of biolubricants through double transesterification reactions. It also highlights the need to explore this route for the production of microalgae-derived biolubricants due to its environmental benefits during cultivation and production processes.

Abstract:Trimethylolpropane fatty acid triester (TFATE) is a promising biolubricant as an environmentally friendly substitute to conventional mineral-based lubricants. However, the issues of extensive energy consumption from vacuum maintenance and feedstock saponification caused by strong alkaline catalysts exist in current TFATEbased biolubricant synthesis. Here, sustainable production of biolubricant was achieved with methyl oleate (MO) from non-edible oil sources as the feedstock and moderate alkaline K2CO3 as the catalyst. Nitrogen gas stripping method instead of vacuum was adopted for methanol removal. The effects of agitation speed, N-2 flow rate, catalyst amount, MO to trimethylolpropane (TMP) molar ratio and temperature on MO conversion and TFATE selectivity were examined. The TFATE selectivity reached 95.6% under the optimized conditions. Leaching tests indicated neglectable K2CO3 dissolution in reaction products. The kinetic parameters for the three consecutive transesterification reactions were calculated. In addition, the synthesized biolubricants exhibit low acid value and volatility, moderate iodine value, superior thermal stability, and good rheological and frictional properties.

Abstract:Vegetable oil–based bio-lubricants possess potential as an alternative to mineral oil–based lubricants due to their biodegradability and renewability. However, a detailed examination of the publication focus, trend, and future direction related to these bio-lubricants' tribological and physicochemical properties is scarce. Therefore, the study presents a bibliometric analysis of vegetable oil–based bio-lubricant. One hundred sixty-five publications were extracted from Web of Science (WoS) from 2010 to 2021. During this period, the total citation was 2,240, recording an average citation per publication of 13.58. Proceedings of The Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Part J: Journal of Engineering Tribology was the top productive journal, publishing 10.3% of the publications selected on the studied topic. From 2010 to 2021, India was the most productive country working on bio-lubricants due to its abundance of coconut products, followed by Malaysia due to its abundance of palm products. The keyword analysis indicated that a significant amount of work emphasised the derivation of bio-lubricants with an increasing shift towards tribological performance characterisation. From the analysis, palm is the most studied bio-lubricant, followed by castor oil. The reported viscosity and viscosity index values cover an extensive range, allowing these bio-lubricants to be adopted for a wide range of applications. For different vegetable oil–based bio-lubricants, the coefficient of friction is reported from 0.001 to 0.78, with the wear scar diameter being reported from 0.075 μm to 4.59 mm. Even though these bio-lubricants' friction and wear performances can be tabulated, the dataset is still unreliable for lubricant-selection purposes because of the varying test conditions. Such a scenario also limits the ability to correlate the role of fatty acid composition in the vegetable oil–based bio-lubricants in fulfilling their various application-specific potentials. Therefore, this study recommends that a unified correlation between the fatty acid composition and its tribological performance be attained consistently to better elucidate the potential of vegetable oil–based bio-lubricants.

Influence of Microalgal Bio-Oil on the Lubrication Properties of Engine Oil

Abstract:In order to accelerate and expand the application of bio-energy, two kinds of microalgal bio-oils, prepared via co-liquefaction of Chlorella and Spirulina under sub- and supercritical ethanol conditions, were used as partial substitutes for the engine oil CD SAE 15W-40. The friction and wear behaviors of the oils were tested on a four-ball tribometer, referring to the ASTM D4172 standard conditions. The micro-morphology, profiles, roughness and chemical valences of typical elements on the rubbed surfaces were characterized by Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), surface profiler and X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS), respectively. The results showed that both of the bio-oils had good lubrication properties. The suitable weight content of the bio-oils in the engine oil was 10%. The lubrication properties of the Bio-Oil (BOsup) prepared in supercritical ethanol were a little better than those of the Bio-Oil (BOsub) prepared in subcritical ethanol. The lubricating mechanisms were ascribed to the combined actions of various lubricating films, including boundary lubrication, and deposited films and tribological chemical reaction films. The stronger tribological chemical effects of BOsup from higher contents of N-containing compounds contributed to its better lubrication properties than those of BOsub.

Abstract:Fossil fuels, including coal, oil and natural gas, remain the main source of global energy supply. Not only the storage capacity is limited, but also the use of the ecological environment causes great damage, a serious threat to human life safety. Microalgae biodiesel receives extensive attention due to its biodegradable and carbon-neutral green energy characteristics, which is used to reduce or replace the use of these fossil fuels. Because of the slow growth of microalgae, low lipid content and low biodiesel production, people begin to study ways to improve the growth and lipid production of microalgae and catalytic conversion of biodiesel. In this paper, the research progress of the whole process from microalgae culture to microalgae oil production to microalgae catalytic conversion of biodiesel in recent years is reviewed. The efficient growth and oil production of microalgae, the catalytic conversion methods of microalgae biodiesel and the application prospects of microalgae biodiesel are discussed and summarized. Specifically, this review critically discusses: (i) The current development status of microalgae culture and microalgae biodiesel; (ii) Cultivation methods for efficient growth and oil production of microalgae under different stress conditions; (iii) The effects of different types of catalysts and catalytic methods on the yield of biodiesel; (iv) Environmental problems and economic value of the whole process of microalgae biodiesel production; (v) Current limitations and future research directions in the field of microalgae biodiesel. Studies show that regulating light, temperature, pH, nutrients, etc. can improve the growth and oil production of microalgae, in which the addition of anions and cations can change the physiological, biochemical and metabolic mechanisms of microalgae. At present, a large number of genetic modification and metabolic regulation engineering technologies are applied to microalgae oil production. They have precise control of the targeting mechanism in cells to induce increased lipid accumulation. The two-stage culture model can simultaneously increase biomass and lipid content. The addition of homogeneous, heterogeneous, biological enzymes and nano-catalysts accelerates the conversion efficiency and improves the yield of biodiesel. The catalytic yield of several magnetic nano-catalysts studied is as high as > 98 %. The supercritical method and ionic liquid method are favored by everyone because they do not use catalysts to reduce environmental pollution. In situ transesterification replaces the traditional two-step transesterification method to reduce energy consumption and cumbersome steps. Hydrothermal liquefaction method can directly convert wet algae biomass into biofuels without drying at high temperatures and pressure and in the presence of water. However, the current high-cost economic problems in the production of microalgae biodiesel and the environmental problems caused by the addition of catalysts need to further study the efficient and low-cost microalgae culture methods and new environmentally friendly catalysts and catalytic methods to improve the yield of microalgae biodiesel, to realize the commercial production of microalgae biodiesel as soon as possible.

Abstract:High lipid content and excellent CO2 fixation capability of microalgae by photosynthesis have made microalgal biodiesel (BD) a promising carbon-neutral fuel. Nonetheless, the commercialization of BD has not yet been realized because of expensive and energy-intensive cultivation, pretreatment, and BD conversion processes in reference to 1st generation BD production. To resolve the issues, this study comprehensively reviewed the current technical developments of microalgal BD production process and suggested promising future studies. Current microalgal BD production processes highly rely on the processes developed from 1st generation BD process, namely base-catalyzed transesterifications. However, the base-catalyzed suffers from saponification reaction and low production yield due to high water and free fatty acid contents in microalgae. Vigorous pretreatments such as dewatering, drying, esterification of free fatty acid, and purification are required for high yield of microalgal BD production, making this process economically not attractive. As efforts to construct new transesterification platform, novel approaches tolerant to impurities such as thermally induced non-catalytic transesterifications were suggested. The thermally induced reactions allowed in situ conversion of microalgal lipid into BD (≥ 95 wt.% yield) within 1 min of reaction at ≥ 350 ̊C. This process resists to presence of water and free fatty acids and does not require lipid extraction process. To make this process more promising, it was suggested lowering reaction temperature for thermally induced transesterifications. In addition, pilot study, in-depth life cycle assessment, and economic analysis were suggested to assess economic viability and environmental impacts.

Abstract:Microalgae feedstock is recognised as one of the most promising resources for producing triglycerides which is subsequently converted to biodiesel. However, the large-scale technology required to generate biodiesel from microalgae is still in its early stages of development. Microalgae research to date may be placed into four broad categories: (i) growth, (ii) harvesting, (iii) oil extraction and (iv) fuel properties for engine performance and emissions. More than 1000 manuscripts have been published on the first category with progressively less on subsequent groups. Finally, effects of microalgae methyl esters on engine performance have only been reported in 9 scientific articles. This review will place extraction techniques and engine performance of microalgae biodiesel in the context of the preceding two categories and examine the practical problems associated with fuel properties, engine performance and emissions. Considering energy consumption, toxicity, and time, many of the extraction techniques used in the laboratory show moderate potential for commercial scale. An important finding is that variation of conditions in the first three categories can have a significant effect on biofuel quality which can cause fuel properties to be out of standard and/or adversely affect engine performance and emissions.

The global energy demand is expected to rise due to improved living standards, population growth, and urbanization. It underscores the need to explore alternative energy sources. Biodiesel, derived from renewable feedstock, is considered a promising solution to meet future energy needs while addressing concerns about dwindling fossil fuel reserves and environmental issues. Microalgal oils are identified as third-generation feedstock for biofuels production due to their advantages over conventional edible crops and non-edible oils, which face limitations in availability and yield. Microalgal oils are particularly significant because edible oils serve as food sources, and non-edible oil resources have slow growth rate as well as less oil yields. For biodiesel derived from any feedstock, meeting specific physical and chemical properties to comply with biodiesel standards. Therefore, thoroughly examining the conversion process from microalgal oil to biodiesel is necessary. This study explores various aspects of microalgal oils as biodiesel feedstock, including different microalgal species and their oil content, technologies used for biodiesel production from microalgal oils and biomass, and biodiesel standards and characterization across other countries. Techno-economics and Life Cycle Assessment are applied in this study to evaluate the economic viability and environmental impact of microalgae-based processes, addressing challenges such as data availability, uncertainty, and stakeholder engagement. This review highlights a significant opportunity to produce biodiesel from microalgal feedstock, which could contribute to future biodiesel production and provide a sustainable alternative to conventional diesel fuels.

Abstract:Microalgae, with the merits of environmental adaptability, high photosynthetic efficiency and high lipid content, have become one of the most promising raw materials for bio-fuels production, especially for the biodiesel production. In this paper, the advances of technologies in microalgae harvesting and lipid extraction worldwide are reviewed. Firstly, several methods such as flocculation, centrifugation and filtration, as well as their mechanisms and applications for microalgae recovery are introduced. Then, the practical lipid extraction technologies including organic solvents, supercritical and subcritical fluids are evaluated based on their operation conditions and energy consumption. In particular, a novel method of in-situ lipid milking is introduced to allow synchronous culture and lipid extraction of microalgae. Finally, the main problems within the downstream processing of algal oil are summarized and the possible solutions to produce cost-efficient algal biodiesel are proposed.

Abstract:Microalgae have great potential in producing energy-dense and valuable products via thermochemical processes. Therefore, producing alternative bio-oil to fossil fuel from microalgae has rapidly gained popularity due to its environmentally friendly process and elevated productivity. This current work aims to review comprehensively the microalgae bio-oil production using pyrolysis and hydrothermal liquefaction. In addition, core mechanisms of pyrolysis and hydrothermal liquefaction process for microalgae were scrutinized, showing that the presence of lipids and proteins could contribute to forming a large amount of compounds containing O and N elements in bio-oil. However, applying proper catalysts and advanced technologies for the two aforementioned approaches could improve the quality, heating value, and yield of microalgae bio-oil. In general, microalgae bio-oil produced under optimal conditions could have 46 MJ/kg heating value and 60% yield, indicating that microalgae bio-oil could become a promising alternative fuel for transportation and power generation.

Abstract:In the current global scenario, the world is under a serious dilemma due to the increasing human population, industrialization, and urbanization. The ever-increasing need for fuels and increasing nutritional problems have made a serious concern on the demand for nutrients and renewable and eco-friendly fuel sources. Currently, the use of fossil fuels is creating ecological and economic problems. Microalgae have been considered as a promising candidate for high-value metabolites and alternative renewable energy sources. Microalgae offer several advantages such as rapid growth rate, efficient land utilization, carbon dioxide sequestration, ability to cultivate in wastewater, and most importantly, they do not participate in the food crop versus energy crop dilemma or debate. An efficient microalgal biorefinery system for the production of lipids and subsequent byproduct for nutraceutical applications could well satisfy the need. But, the current microalgal cultivation systems for the production of lipids and nutraceuticals do not offer techno-economic feasibility together with energy and environmental sustainability. This review article has its main focus on the production of lipids and nutraceuticals from microalgae, covering the current strategies used for lipid production and the major high-value metabolites from microalgae and their nutraceutical importance. This review also provides insights on the future strategies for enhanced microalgal lipid production and subsequent utilization of microalgal biomass.Graphical abstract

Abstract:The quest for sustainable and environmentally friendly lubrication solutions in industrial applications has led to the exploration of bio-lubricants as alternatives to conventional petroleum-based lubricants. This study presents the development, characterization, optimization, and comparative analysis of bio-lubricants based on mustard oil and castor oil blends, with a particular focus on their performance when compared to commercial engine oil. The physico-chemical, thermal, rheological, and tribological characteristics have been investigated. Examination has been done for the temperature resistance, cold flow characteristics, coefficient of friction, and wear scar diameter. The optimized formulation has been found to offer increased viscosity index, flash point, and thermal stability. The coefficient of friction and weld load have been observed to be improved with the new formulation compared to the commercial mineral oil sample. The importance of this research lies in the urgent need to reduce the environmental impact of lubrication processes, which are integral to countless industrial operations. The use of bio-lubricants derived from renewable sources not only addresses this concern but also aligns with global sustainability goals.

Abstract:Cutting fluid is crucial in ensuring surface quality and machining accuracy during machining. However, traditional mineral oil-based cutting fluids no longer meet modern machining's health and environmental protection requirements. As a renewable, pollution-free alternative with excellent processing characteristics, vegetable oil has become an inevitable replacement. However, vegetable oil lacks oxidation stability, extreme pressure, and antiwear properties, which are essential for machining requirements. The physicochemical characteristics of vegetable oils and the improved methods' application mechanism are not fully understood. This study aims to investigate the effects of viscosity, surface tension, and molecular structure of vegetable oil on cooling and lubricating properties. The mechanisms of autoxidation and high-temperature oxidation based on the molecular structure of vegetable oil are also discussed. The study further investigates the application mechanism and performance of chemical modification and antioxidant additives. The study shows that the propionic ester of methyl hydroxy-oleate obtained by epoxidation has an initial oxidation temperature of 175 °C. The application mechanism and extreme pressure performance of conventional extreme pressure additives and nanoparticle additives were also investigated to solve the problem of insufficient oxidation resistance and extreme pressure performance of nanobiological lubricants. Finally, the study discusses the future prospects of vegetable oil for chemical modification and nanoparticle addition. The study provides theoretical guidance and technical support for the industrial application and scientific research of vegetable oil in the field of lubrication and cooling. It is expected to promote sustainable development in the manufacturing industry.

Abstract:Biolubricants do not cause the environmental pollution resulting from the manufacturing and use of mineral-based lubricants, but the commonly adopted chemical method of preparing biolubricants using expensive vegetable oils as raw materials is still environmentally and economically unsatisfactory. In this study, R. glutinis lipid with a high oleic-acid content was esterified with trimethylolpropane (TMP) by using the Candida sp. 99-125 enzyme in a solvent-free system, and the effect of the microbial oil with the high oleic-acid content on the performance of resulting biolubricants was investigated. The purpose of this study was to solve the problems of pollution caused by the chemical synthesis of biolubricants and of the uneconomical use of vegetable oils as raw materials. Further, this study aimed to improve the performance of biolubricants by using the microbial lipid with a high oleic-acid content. As a result of optimization of the reaction conditions, the yield of trimethylolpropane fatty acid triester (TFAT) reached 89.5%. The synthesized biolubricants had excellent low-temperature lubrication performance (pour point = −45°C), and the physicochemical performance reached the ISOVG-46 grade. The results of the high-frequency reciprocating friction test (HRFT) show that the products have better tribological properties than mineral-based lubricants of the same viscosity grade(friction coefficient = 0.085; average wear scar diameter = 187 μm).
