Abstract:Hazard recognition assisted by human-machine collaboration (HMC) leads to higher productivity. HMC requires a less interactive interface between humans and machines to promote safer working processes. Nonetheless, to provide customized information, current HMC acquires human characteristics through manual inputs and thus increases interactive interface. This study proposes an implicit electroencephalography-based (EEG-based) measure to automatically assess workers' personalities, underpinning the development of HMC techniques. First, we assumed that personality can influence hazard recognition. Second, we recorded the EEG signals of construction workers. Third, we proposed a machine-learning algorithm to extract multichannel event-related potentials to develop a model for personality assessment. The results showed that (1) EEG-assessed results have strong correlation with self-reported results, and (2) the model achieved good external validity for hazard recognition-related personality and reliability out of sample. The constructed model can be a feasible alternative for assessing personalities in HMC techniques for hazard recognition.
