Abstract:MXenes, as new two-dimensional transition metal compounds, has become promising sensing materials due to the excellent metal conductivity, abundant adsorption sites and the terminal groups of -O, -OH and -F. In this study, we report the well-etched accordion-like Ti3C2Tx by removing Al layer in Ti3AlC2, where T-x represents a wealth of terminal functional groups (-OH, -F, -O, etc.). In addition, unique hierarchical self-assembly ZnO/Ti3C2Tx nanocomposites are synthesized by hydrothermal method. The Brunauer-Emmett-Teller Method investigation also shows that the ZnO/Ti3C2Tx nanocomposites has a specific surface area of about 22.08 m(2)/g, and the pore size is mainly located at 11.1 nm. The innovative nanostructure is conducive to the adsorption and response of gas molecules. By investigating the gas sensitive properties of the sensors, it is found that the response of the ZnO/Ti3C2Tx sensor to triethylamine (TEA) is improved by 66 times and 1.58 times over that of pure Ti3C2Tx and ZnO, and the optimal operating temperature is 60degree celsius lower than that of pure ZnO. In addition, the LOD (Low Of Detection) of about 32.7 ppb indicates that the ZnO/Ti3C2Tx sensor is suitable for the detection of low concentrations TEA. The sensing performances of the ZnO/Ti3C2Tx sensor at a high humidity of 75 % RH verifies the strong sensing performance in high humidity environment. Furthermore, the composite sensor stabilize in 6 repetitive tests and present slight decrease in response value over 30 days. The excellent TEA sensitive properties indicate that the ZnO/Ti3C2Tx nanocomposite sensor may have promising applications in the gas sensitive field.

Abstract:Selective noxious gas sensing at low temperature is very important in some industrial applications. Here, we demonstrate that the reduced graphene oxide (RGO) wrapped Au@ZnO core-shell composite can be fabricated in wafer-level and used as the key sensor materials for triethylamine sensing with a high response of 12.2% for 5 ppm of TEA gas at a low temperature (50 degrees C). The sensitivity of RGO/Au/ZnO sensor to TEA gas achieved almost 6 times higher than that of ethanol and acetone, 5 times that of methanol and isopropanol, and 3 times that of ammonia. The selective sensing properties are largely attributed to the synergistic effect of the core-shell structure and the ZnO/RGO heterojunctions. Abstract:Heterostructures constructed between different metal oxide semiconductors (MOS) are effective strategies for the development of high-performance gas sensors. Here, a feasible hydrothermal approach was developed to obtain a special dendritic hierarchical CuO/Co3O4 nanowire heterostructure that is favored for ethylene glycol (EG) adsorption. With the maximum response (6.3) to 100 ppm EG at 130 ºC, the hierarchical CuO/Co3O4 heterostructure-based gas sensor stands out for its exceptional gas sensing capabilities. This remarkable enhancement of EG sensing performance could be ascribed to the formation of a special CuO/Co3O4 core-shell heterojunction structure. With the aid of precise band alignment, the heterojunction-depletion model was able to explain the mechanism in detail. The prospective candidates for various p–p heterojunctions intended for high performance gas sensors will be motivated by this work.

Abstract:It is imperative to seek for novel materials with pronounced gas sensing performance towards triethylamine for the sake of human health. Herein, we successfully fabricate an outstanding triethylamine sensor based on CdS/ZnO composite with 0D/2D structure, which are prepared by in-situ growth of CdS quantum dots on ultra-thin ZnO nanosheets. The ratios between the two ingredients are adjusted and their effect is evaluated. The optimal sample exhibits the lowest operating temperature of 200 °C, the highest response value of ~20 and the fastest response time of 2 s. Besides, it also has the virtues of durable stability, excellent selectivity and superior anti-interference ability. The mechanism behind the aforementioned intriguing performance is investigated by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Kelvin probe and density function theory (DFT) simulation. All the results verify that the enhanced gas sensing properties are derived from splendid 0D/2D structure, n-n heterojunction and large specific surface area. Additionally, this study opens an avenue for designing sensors with 0D/2D structure.

Abstract:Metal elements doping and the construction of heterojunction are commonly effective strategies to achieve the excellent gas sensing performance at room temperature (RT). This work realizes the detection of triethylamine (TEA) at RT under UV light by co-modifying ZnO with Sn and Ce, and the sensor based on ZSC-3 (2 at% Sn/0.7 at% Ce) exhibits optimal sensing properties to TEA with the responses of 11.5, fast response/recovery time of 18 s/137 s to 10 ppm TEA, and a low theoretical detection limit of 46 ppb. In the meantime, the sensor also possesses good selectivity, repeatability, and stability. Furthermore, the mechanism of sensor to TEA is discussed in the work, and the boosting properties are contributed to the synergistic effect of Sn and Ce by the adjustment of grain sizes, oxygen vacancies content, electron concentration, and even the separation of the photogenerated electron-hole pairs.

Abstract:Triethylamine (TEA) significantly harms the human body, so it is important to develop a TEA gas sensor with excellent performance for TEA detection. In this work, a Pd/PdO-In2O3 TEA gas sensor is developed by a simple, low-cost method, which exhibits improved comprehensive performance to TEA, include high sensitivity, fast response/recovery time, good selectivity, long-term stability, and certain moisture resistance. The 0.8%Pd/PdO-In2O3 sensor exhibited a high response of 1380 and a fast res/rec time of 30 s/ 90 s for 10 ppm TEA, and with good selectivity and stability at an optimal operating temperature of 150°C, and a detection limit below 0.1 ppm. The PdO-In2O3 P-N heterojunction accelerates the electron transport speed and provides many electron transport channels, thus endowing the Pd/PdO-In2O3 with excellent TEA sensing performance. This work launches new insights into the development of new semiconductor heterojunctions for high-performance sensor devices.

Abstract:Chemiresistive gas sensor with high sensitivity, selectivity and fast response for specific target gas has many applications from environmental monitor to internet of things. Herein, a highly sensitive and selective nanostructured triethylamine (TEA) gas sensor is fabricated successfully by designing semiconductor heterostructures consisting of ZnO nanorods and alpha-Fe2O3 nanoparticles. ZnO nanorods grow directly on flat Al2O3 electrodes and alpha-Fe2O3 nanoparticles are deposited onto ZnO nanorods by pulsed laser deposition (PLD). Such alpha-Fe2O3/ZnO sensor has larger specific surface area (20.79 m(2)/g), adsorbs more oxygen ions and exhibits higher response (63 to 50 ppm TEA), lower detection concentration (1 ppm), and shorter response time (4 s), which are all much better than the controlled ZnO nanorods sensor. Besides the interface depletion layer at the alpha-Fe2O3/ZnO interface, we find that the surface depletion layer due to oxygen absorption is also very important for the sensor performance. Moreover, more surface adsorbed oxygen in the alpha-Fe2O3/ZnO sensor is proved by both XPS analysis and density functional theory (DFT) simulation, which highlights the significance of gas sensing mechanism study for such composite heterojunction structure.

Abstract:Sensitive and stable triethylamine (TEA) gas sensors are desirable for environmental and human safety. However, the high operating temperature of the metal-oxide-based gas sensors poses a limitation on their wide applications. Herein, we fabricate an exceptional TEA gas sensor based on the core–shell heterostructure comprising crystalline CuO and amorphous In2O3/ZnO (CuInZnO) via a facile electrodeposition method. Remarkably, the optimum gas sensor (CuInZnO-3) exhibits an outstanding gas response (∼25) toward a 10 ppm TEA at room temperature. Moreover, CuInZnO-3 shows excellent selectivity, linear response, and stability. The superior sensing performance can be mainly ascribed to the unique core–shell nanorod heterostructure with a high specific surface area, allowing the formation of p–n junctions. The amorphous nature of the In2O3/ZnO shell also enriches the active oxygen on the surface and enhances gas adsorption.

Abstract:Developing high-sensitivity TEA sensors has extremely important significance for human health. Design of three-dimensional (3D) nanostructures assembled from one-dimensional nanomaterials can effectively improve sensing performance. In this work, a nest-like structure assembled by Cr-doped MoO3 (Cr-MoO3) nanorods with relatively higher specific surface area was prepared. In order to improve the sensing performance, Cr-MoO3 skeleton was combined with ZnSe nanospheres of different mass ratios as sensing materials (ZnSe/Cr-MoO3), and the successful construction of the heterojunction structure was supported by various spectroscopies and charge density calculation. The prepared composite with an optimal moiety ratio showed very high response values of 371 and 1301 for 10 ppm and 50 ppm for TEA at 200 °C, respectively. Simultaneously, the composite sensor also exhibited a low detection limit (1.7 ppb). The improvement of the sensing performance of ZnSe/Cr-MoO3 was attributed to the formation of oxygen vacancies induced by Cr doping, the 3D nest-like structure provided an efficient network for charge transport/collection and the n-n heterojunctions between Cr-MoO3 nanorods and ZnSe nanospheres. The simulation analysis based on density functional theory (DFT) calculations indicated that the heterojunctions could effectively enhance the adsorption energy of TEA and the more charges transferring from TEA to the Cr-MoO3 nanorods.

Abstract:Al-doped ZnO nanorods arrays on NiO nanofibers to construct a typical ZnO-NiO hetero-nanostructure on Al2O3 substrate have been obtained by electrospinning and hydrothermal methods. The sensors based on this hetero-nanostructures exhibit high selectivity and sensitivity towards triethylamine gas under operating temperature of 250 °C, and Al doping has a great influence on the air-sensitive performance of the sensors. Our results indicate that the ZnO-NiO hetero-nanostructure is a potential candidate for gas sensors with good performances for practical applications.
Improving Triethylamine-Sensing Performance of WO3 Nanoplates through In Situ Heterojunction Construction

Abstract:Surface engineering techniques can be used to develop high-performance gas sensing materials and advance the development of sensors. In this study, we improved the gas sensing performance of two-dimensional (2D) WO3 nanoplates by combining surface Zn modification and the in situ formation of ZnWO4/WO3 heterojunctions. Introducing Zn atoms by surface modification can reconstruct the atomic surface of 2D WO3 nanoplates, creating additional active sites. This allowed for the preparation of various types of ZnWO4/WO3 heterojunctions on the surface of the WO3 nanoplates, which improved the selectivity and sensitivity to the target gas triethylamine. The sensor exhibited good gas sensing performance for triethylamine even at low operating temperatures and strongly resisted humidity changes. The ZnWO4/WO3 material we prepared demonstrated a nearly threefold improvement in the triethylamine (TEA) response, with a gas sensing responsivity of 40.75 for 10 ppm of TEA at 250 °C. The sensor based on ZnWO4/WO3 has a limit of detection (LOD) for TEA of 200 ppb in practical measurements (its theoretical LOD is even as low as 31 ppb). The method of growing ZnWO4 on the surface of WO3 nanoplates using surface modification techniques to form surface heterojunctions differs from ordinary composites. The results suggest that the in situ construction of surface heterojunctions using surface engineering strategies, such as in situ modifying, is a practical approach to enhance the gas sensing properties and resistance to the humidity changes of metal oxide materials.

Abstract:Porous and hollow SnO2/Zn2SnO4 composites with typical one-dimensional (1D) structure have been synthesized by adjusting the amounts of 2-methylimidazole zinc salt (ZIF-8) added in the precursor solution through a modified electrospinning technology. Compared with the gas-sensing performance of different samples detected in the normal condition, it is confirmed that the optimal working temperature can be markedly decreased from 260 to 120 °C under UV light irradiation, along with the substantially improved gas selectivity. In addition, SnO2/Zn2SnO4 heterostructures exhibit a higher response (increases from 1.7 to 2.8) and faster response/recovery times (decreases from 24/154 to 14/42 s) to triethylamine (TEA) than that of the pure SnO2. Significantly, the good practicality of gas sensors for food spoilage evaluation could be testified by effectively detecting the gas released during the putridity of prawns. UV light enhanced surface electron migration mainly contributes to the elevated synergistic effect between the formation of n-n heterojunction and tunable surface/interface electron transport behavior, as well as the adsorption and desorption of TEA molecules on the surface of the sensing materials.

Abstract:The directional modulation of metal oxide semiconductors (MOSs) can be effective in developing high-performance gas-sensing materials. Herein, we propose an efficient strategy by modifying ZnWO4 on In2O3 to achieve controllable modulation of oxygen vacancies and energy band structures in ZnWO4/In2O3 heterostructures. The sensor based on optimized ZnWO4/In2O3 exhibits significantly enhanced performance to detect triethylamine, including a lower operating temperature (100 °C), a higher responsivity (Ra/Rg = 221.2 for 100 ppm), and a lower detection limit (500 ppb). In addition, the fabricated sensor exhibits faster response and good selectivity. The improved gas-sensing performance could be attributed to the acid–base interaction between triethylamine gas and ZnWO4, the formation of heterojunctions, and the increase of oxygen vacancies to achieve a synergistic modulation of the chemical and energy band structures. It is anticipated that our current investigation could offer insights and a useful strategy for triethylamine detection.

Abstract:Zn-doped In 2 O 3 starfish-like dendritic structures (IZ x, x =0, 1, 3, 5) were successfully synthesized by a facile co-precipitation method and applied for triethylamine (TEA) sensing. The influence of Zn addition on the phase structure, microstructure, chemical composition and surface state of IZ x sensor was characterized by XRD, Raman, UV-vis, SEM, TEM, XPS and BET analyses . TEA-sensing performance was measured by gas-sensing test system at 40% humidity. Results show that the typical IZ3 sensor has a high response of 156.2 and short response/recovery times of 6 s/165 s after exposure to 5 ppm TEA at optimal temperature of 140 oC. It also exhibits a low detection limit of 0.1 ppm, excellent selectivity to TEA, and long-term stability. The excellent TEA-sensing ability of IZ x -based sensors may be attributed to their unique morphology with large specific surface area, suitable internal defects and band gap induced by Zn-doping . Therefore, Zn-doped In 2 O 3 sensors have potential applications in actual TEA-detection .

Highly porous ZnO modified with photochemical deposition of silver nanostructure for ultra-sensitive triethylamine detection

Abstract:Doping noble metals into semiconductor based gas sensors was proved to be an effective strategy in improving gas response properties. Here, we report a silver/silver (II) oxide nanoparticles (Ag/AgO NPs) modified highly porous ZnO nanocomposite. Firstly, the Ag NPs were evenly deposited on the surface of flower-like ZnCO 3 precursors through a simple photochemical reduction method, which was then heated at 400 °C to give highly porous Ag/AgO/ZnO nanocomposite, accompaning with the dissociation of ZnCO 3 after release of CO 2 . The interleaving ultrathin and porous sheet-like features of Ag/AgO/ZnO nanocomposite afford it excellent triethylamine (TEA) sensing performance with R a /R g = 90.3 at an operating temperature of 240 °C, and the response sensitivity is 5.5-fold higher than that of pure ZnO. Specifically, the porous Ag/AgO/ZnO nanocomposite exhibited a fast response/recovery time of 53 s/8 s and oustanding long-term cyclic stability. The enhanced gas sensing performance can be attributed to the sensitization of Ag/AgO NPs, significantly increasing the number of oxygen vacancies and thus providing more reactive sites. The synergistic interaction between Ag/AgO NPs and porous ZnO nanosheets also facilitates a fast electron transport and a high permeability for gas molecules. This work displays a feasible way of coupling photochemical reduction and pyrolysis strategy to develop highly porous ZnO nanosheets functionalized by noble metal NPs with remarkably enhanced gas response property.

Abstract:Since poisonous and flammable characteristics of triethylamine (TEA), developing TEA sensor is increasingly essential to guarantee industrial production and life safety. Herein, a novel ZnS@ZnO (SO) core-shell nanostructure was prepared by a two-step method involving solvothermal and sintering procedure. X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, energy dispersive spectroscopy investigation and Brunner−Emmet−Teller measurements revealed that the SO has a fine size of 25 nm in diameter and a thin shell of ZnO, with a large specific surface area of 28.3 m2/g. The gas sensitivity measurement showed that SO heterojunction not only has highly enhanced sensitivity and strong anti-humidity ability, but also significantly shortened the response and recovery time, compared to the ZnS sensor. The optimal sensitivity of the SO sensor is 74.65, and its response/recovery time is 3 s/176 s toward 100 ppm TEA at 200 °C. The enhanced sensing performance can be attributed to rapid electron flow and significant change in the electron depletion layer at the n-n heterojunction interface between ZnS and ZnO. Therefore, the SO sensor possesses a promising application prospect in TEA detection.

Abstract:This study explores the development of a gas sensor based on SnO 2 /NiO heterostructures for detecting volatile organic compounds (VOCs), notably triethylamine (TEA). The sensor's operational principles, including TEA molecule interaction with adsorbed oxygen and electron transfer mechanisms affecting sensor resistance, are thoroughly analyzed. SnO 2 /NiO core–shell heterojunction nanowires were synthesized via a vapor–liquid–solid (VLS) and hydrothermal process. Characterization techniques such as field-emission-scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), field-emission transmission electron microscopy (FE-TEM) with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), and nitrogen gas adsorption (BET method) were employed. Experimental results demonstrate exceptional sensor performance at 300 °C, showing rapid response and recovery to TEA with high stability over extended use. This research highlights the promise of SnO 2 /NiO heterostructures for advanced gas-sensing applications, surpassing conventional sensor technologies.

Abstract:Construction of heterojunction has been considered as an efficient strategy to enhance the gas-sensing performances of metal oxide semiconductors. On this basis, hierarchical In2O3/In2S3 microsphere heterostructures were synthesized by partial oxidation of In2S3 precursors which were obtained via a facile hydrothermal method. Besides, gas sensors based on the acquired materials were fabricated to investigate their sensing performances toward triethylamine (TEA). The results reveal that the gas sensor based on In2O3/In2S3 exhibits a high response of 37 at 300 °C toward 0.45 mg/L TEA, which is 3.7 times higher than that of bare In2O3. Meanwhile, it also possesses fast response/recovery time (19 s/154 s), good repeatability, selectivity and long-term stability. The excellent sensing performances toward TEA are mainly attributed to the massive oxygen vacancy defects and heterojunction formed between In2O3 and In2S3. This work provides a facile temperature-dependent route to controllably synthesize hierarchical In2O3/In2S3 microsphere heterostructures, and the In2O3/In2S3 sensor shows great application prospects in TEA detection.
