Abstract:Background and Objectives: Typically neural networks are trained on separate datasets in medical image segmentation tasks due to the difference between each individual task and limited medical annotations. However, training with shared information could improve the performance of each task. This paper aims to propose a partially supervised semantic segmentation method to segment artery structures on intravascular ultrasound (IVUS) using a union of two datasets comprising IVUS images with heterogeneous image quality that were acquired by three main IVUS imaging catheters in current clinical practice. Methods: Unlike normal partially-labeled datasets, annotation inconsistency exists in our dataset. Thus, we performs multi-label semantic segmentation on this dataset to tackle the annotation inconsistency. We propose an asymmetric dual-branch network with class-rebalancing strategy to improve the performance of lumen, media-advantia (MA) and bifurcation segmentation. Results: Using Jaccard Index (JI) and Hausdorff Distance (HD) as metrics, our method achieves better performance than fully supervised methods using the corresponding dataset on lumen (JI=0.898 and HD=0.287mm vs. JI=0.890 and HD=0.298mm), MA (JI=0.931 and HD=0.350mm vs. JI=0.923 and HD=0.368mm) and bifurcation (JI=0.668 vs. JI=0.641), respectively. Strong correlation and good agreement of lumen area (r=0.99; p<0.001), MA area (r=0.99; p<0.001), and plaque burden (r=0.95; p<0.001) between the ground truth and the prediction are observed. Conclusions: The proposed method effectively utilizes partially labeled datasets with annotation inconsistency and alleviates the problem of 'data hunger' in medical image segmentation. Moreover, accurate and automatic segmentation of artery structure can facilitate the IVUS-based anatomic and functional evaluation in catheterization laboratory.
