Abstract:A novel quaternary chalco-halide Ba-3(FeS4)I was successfully synthesized via a molten salt method. The Ba-3(FeS4)I crystallizes in the orthorhombic space group Cmcm (NO. 63). It features two dimensional [Ba3I](5+) layers, which are separated by isolated [FeS4](5-) tetrahedra. Ba-3(FeS4)I is a semiconductor with a direct band gap of 1.65 eV. Despite the large FeMIDLINE HORIZONTAL ELLIPSISFe separation (>= 6.293 angstrom), the Ba-3(FeS4)I shows unexpected antiferromagnetic ordering with Neel temperatures (T-N) of 108 K. The possible magnetic structures and the underlying magnetic interaction mechanism were proposed based on the first-principles electronic structure calculations. The [FeS4](5-) tetrahedra behave like super-moments due to the strong p-d hybridization between Fe and S, making the S atoms adopt the same spin orientation to their nearest-neighboring Fe atoms. The new magnetic interaction mechanism, namely the Fe-SMIDLINE HORIZONTAL ELLIPSISS-Fe super-super exchange, was found to be responsible for this antiferromagnetic phase transition.
The super-super exchange mechanism in iron-based antiperovskite chalco-halides

Abstract:By using the first-principles electronic structure calculations, we have systematically studied the magnetism in three recently synthesized iron-based antiperovskite chalco-halides: Ba$_3$(FeS$_4$)Cl, Ba$_3$(FeS$_4$)Br, and Ba$_3$(FeSe$_4$)Br. These compounds consist of edge-sharing Ba$Q_6$ ($Q$=Cl or Br) octahedra intercalated with isolated Fe$X_4$ ($X$=S or Se) tetrahedra. We find that even though the shortest distances between the nearest-neighboring Fe atoms in these three compounds already exceed 6 Å, much larger than the bond length of a chemical bonding, they all remarkably show antiferromagnetic (AFM) coupling along $b$ axis with very weak spin-spin correlation along $a$ axis. Our study shows that the mechanism underlying this novel AFM coupling is such a new type of exchange interaction between the nearest-neighboring Fe-based super-moments mediated by Ba cations, which we call the super-super exchange interaction, in which each magnetic Fe atom partially polarizes its four nearest-neighboring $X$ atoms to form a super-moment through $p$-$d$ orbital hybridization and the $X$ atoms in neighboring Fe$X_4$ tetrahedra along $b$ axis antiferromagnetically couple with each others through the intermediate Ba cations. Different from the conventional superexchange, here it is cations rather than anions that mediate two neighboring super-moments. According to the calculated strength of the AFM coupling, we predict that among these compounds the highest AFM phase transition temperature $T_N$ may reach 110 K in Ba$_3$(FeSe$_4$)Br, in comparison with the observed $T_N$s of 84 K in Ba$_3$(FeS$_4$)Br and 95 K in Ba$_3$(FeS$_4$)Cl.

Abstract:Perovskite-related materials have received increasing attention for their broad applications in photovoltaic solar cells and information technology due to their unique electrical and magnetic properties. Here we report three new antiperovskite chalco-halides: Ba 3 (FeS 4 )Cl, Ba 3 (FeS 4 )Br and Ba 3 (FeSe 4 )Br. All of them were found to be good solar light absorbers. Remarkably, although the shortest Fe-Fe distance exceeds 6 Å, an unexpected anti-ferromagnetic phase transition near 100 K was observed in their magnetic susceptibility measurement. The corresponding complex magnetic structures were resolved by neutron diffraction experiments as well as investigated by first-principles electronic structure calculations. The spin-spin coupling between two neighboring Fe atoms along the b axis, which is realized by the Fe-S···S-Fe super-super exchange mechanism, was found to be responsible for this magnetic phase transition.
Canted Antiferromagnetism in the Quasi-One-dimensional Iron Chalcogenide BaFe2Se4

Abstract:We report the synthesis and physical properties studies of quasi-one-dimensional (quais-1D) iron chalcogenide BaFe2Se4 which shares the FeSe4 tetrahedra building motif commonly seen in the iron chalcogenide superconductors. A high-quality polycrystalline sample was achieved by solid-state reaction method and characterized by x-ray diffraction, electrical resistivity, magnetic susceptibility, and neutron diffraction measurements. BaFe2Se4 is a narrow gap semiconductor that magnetically orders at similar to 310 K. Both neutron powder diffraction results and isothermal M-H loops suggest a canted antiferromagnetic structure where Fe sublattices are antiferromagnetically ordered along the c-axis quasi-1D chain direction, resulting in a net ferromagnetic moment in the perpendicular direction along the a axis with tilted angle of 18.7 degrees towards the b axis.
Ba 4 FeCuS 6 : a new mixed metal sulfide with a pseudo-zero-dimensional structure containing rare CuS 3 units

Abstract:Herein, we describe the synthesis of a new mixed transition metal sulfide, Ba 4 FeCuS 6 , using two methods: (a) the high-temperature reaction of elements under vacuum and (b) the reaction of metal oxides and carbonates under flowing CS 2 at high temperatures. Both methods successfully produced polycrystalline phases of the quaternary sulfide. Single crystals of the title phase were prepared by heating the polycrystalline sample with a Pb flux followed by slow cooling of the reaction mixture. The Ba 4 FeCuS 6 structure adopts the monoclinic crystal system (space group: P 2 1 / n ). The partitioning of the atomic charges of the sulfide can be easily done considering the Fe( III ) species in the structure, i.e. , [Ba( II )] 4 [Fe( III )][Cu( I )][S(− II )] 6 . The Cu atoms, Cu1 and Cu2, of the structure are distributed at two split positions. Four sulfur atoms are bonded to each Fe atom, forming a distorted tetrahedral geometry. In contrast, only three S atoms are part of the coordination polyhedron of each Cu atom to stabilize the trigonal planar geometry of the S atoms. The FeS 4 and Cu1(S 3 )/Cu2(S 3 ) polyhedral units are interconnected by corner sharing to create anionic pseudo-zero-dimensional units. The Ba( II ) cations neutralize the negative charges on these [FeCu 1– x S 6 ] ( x +8)− units. Each Ba atom is surrounded by seven S atoms that form a distorted mono-capped trigonal prismatic geometry. The polycrystalline Ba 4 FeCuS 6 is semiconducting with a direct bandgap of 1.06(2) eV. The magnetic studies of the sample show an antiferromagnetic transition below 30 K. It will be interesting to explore the photovoltaic properties of Ba 4 FeCuS 6 in the future as it is a direct bandgap semiconductor with E g ∼ 1 eV.

Abstract:We report a tetragonal polymorph of ${\mathrm{BaFe}}_{2}{\mathrm{S}}_{2}\mathrm{O}$ synthesized under high pressures. This $\ensuremath{\beta}\text{\ensuremath{-}}{\mathrm{BaFe}}_{2}{\mathrm{S}}_{2}\mathrm{O}$ phase is structurally characterized by two-dimensional ${\mathrm{Fe}}_{2}\mathrm{O}$ square nets that are sandwiched by sulfur atomic layers. The electrical, magnetic, and thermodynamic measurements indicate that it is an antiferromagnetic insulator with a N\'eel temperature of 121 K. A successive magnetic transition at $\ensuremath{\sim}40\phantom{\rule{4pt}{0ex}}\mathrm{K}$ is observed, possibly associated with spin canting due to Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions. Density functional theory based calculations reveal Mott localization driven by the on-site electron-electron Coulomb repulsion. The calculations also suggest a noncollinear ${\mathrm{Fe}}^{2+}$-spin structure with two-$\mathbf{k}$ [${\mathbf{k}}_{\mathbf{1}}=(1/2,0,1/2)$ and ${\mathbf{k}}_{\mathbf{2}}=(0,1/2,1/2)$] propagation vectors, primarily due to the magnetocrystalline anisotropy as well as the next-nearest-neighbor superexchange interactions mediated by oxygen and sulfur anions, respectively.

Abstract:The report on the superconductivity of the two-legged spin ladders BaFe2S3 and BaFe2Se3 has established 123-type iron chalcogenides as a novel subgroup in the iron-based superconductor family and has stimulated the continuous exploration of other iron-based materials with new structures and potentially novel properties. In this paper, we report the systematic study of a new quasi-one-dimensional (1D) iron-based compound, Ba9Fe3Te15, including its synthesis and magnetic properties. The high-pressure synthesized Ba9Fe3Te15 crystallized in a hexagonal structure that mainly consisted of face-sharing FeTe6 octahedral chains running along the c axis, with a lattice constant of a = 10.23668 Å; this led to weak interchain coupling and an enhanced one-dimensionality. The systematic static and dynamic magnetic properties were comprehensively studied experimentally. The dc magnetic susceptibility showed typical 1D antiferromagnetic characteristics, with a Tmax at 190 K followed by a spin glass (SG) state with freezing at Tf ≈ 6.0 K, which were also unambiguously proved by ac susceptibility measurements. Additionally, X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) experiments revealed an unexpected orbital moment for Fe2+, i.e., 0.84 μB per Fe in Ba9Fe3Te15. The transport property is electrically insulating, with a thermal activation gap of 0.32 eV. These features mark Ba9Fe3Te15 as an alternative type of iron-based compound, providing a diverse candidate for high-pressure studies in order to pursue some emerging physics.

Abstract:In this work, we report on the discovery of the high-pressure phase of Ba2FeS3 with quasi one-dimensional (1D) spin chains, which was synthesized under high-pressure and high-temperature conditions. A systematic study was carried out via structural, transport, magnetic and thermodynamic measurements. The high-pressure phase of Ba2FeS3 (denoted by Ba2FeS3 (HP)) crystallizes in a K2AgI3-typed orthorhombic structure with the space group of Pnma (62) and the lattice parameters of a = 8.6831 (1) Å, b = 4.2973 (1) Å, and c = 17.0254 (2) Å, respectively, which consists of chains of corner-sharing FeS4 tetrahedra along the b axis. Ba2FeS3 (HP) undergoes a long-range antiferromagnetic transition at T N ∼56 K, above which the magnetic susceptibility curve exhibits a round hump behavior with the maximum temperature T max ∼110 K. In addition, the intrachain coupling J intra is about −18 K obtained by using the Wagner-Friedberg model. The specific heat data suggest that the total magnetic entropy change ΔS caused by the long-range ordering transition is only ∼20% of the expected value for a S = 2 system. For comparison, the properties of K2CuCl3-typed Ba2FeS3 with similar quasi 1D spin chains were presented as well. Our results indicate that both compounds exhibit a typical feature expected for compounds with 1D spin chains.

Abstract:We report on synthesis of single crystals of BaFe2Se3 and study of their crystal and magnetic structures by means of synchrotron single crystal X-ray and neutron powder diffraction. The crystal structure has orthorhombic symmetry and consists of double chains of FeSe4 edge connected tetrahedra intercalated by barium. Below 240 K long range block-spin checkerboard antiferromagnetic (AFM) order is developed. The magnetic structure is similar to one observed in A0.8Fe1.6Se2 (A=K, Rb or Cs) superconductors. The crystals exhibit a transition to the diamagnetic state with an onset transition temperature of Tc ~11 K. Though we observe FeSe as an impurity phase (<0.8% mass fraction) the diamagnetism unlikely can be attributed to the FeSe-superconductor which has Tc\approx8.5K.

Abstract:The polycrystals of S = 1/2 spin-dimer compound BaCu(SeO3)2 have been synthesized by using solid-state reaction. Without long-range order, the magnetic susceptibility χ(T) curve presents two anomalies at T1 = 5K and TG = 58K due to antiferromagnetic (AFM) short-range order and short-range ferromagnetic (FM) correlations, respectively, which is further supported by the specific heat and electron spin resonance data. The high-temperature χ(T) curve follows the Curie-Weiss law with θCW = 11.3K, showing the dominant intradimer FM interaction. The magnetization M(H) curve at 2K is characteristic of an AFM-FM transition at 0.4T, suggesting the weak interdimer AFM couplings. The density function theory calculations and quantum Monte Carlo simulations allow an estimation of the intradimer and interdimer exchanges with J1/kB = 39.09K, J2/kB = −1.51K, and J3/kB = −1.68K. Interestingly, the χ−1(T) curve within θCW < T < TG deviates downward from paramagnetic Curie-Weiss behavior, mimicking the Griffiths-like phase. This is further supported by the ac magnetic susceptibility and magnetic relaxation measurements. The competing intradimer FM and interdimer AFM exchanges with a subtle ratio between them are proposed to be responsible for the formation of Griffiths-like phase.
BaFe2Se2O As an Iron-Based Mott Insulator with Antiferromagnetic Order

Abstract:A new compound with a quasi-two-dimensional array of FeSe3O tetrahedra and an orthorombic structure, namely BaFe2Se2O, has been successfully fabricated. Experimental results show that this compound is an insulator and has an antiferromagnetic (AF) transition at 240 K. Band structure calculation reveals the narrowing of Fe 3d bands near the Fermi energy, which leads to the localization of magnetism and the Mott insulating behavior. The large distances between the Fe atoms perhaps are responsible for the characters. Linear response calculation further indicates a strong in-plane AF exchange J, this can account for the enhanced magnetic susceptibility (which has a maximum at about 450 K) above the Neel temperature.

Abstract:Three new F-based chalcohalides, Ba2GeF2Q3 (Q = S, Se) and Ba3GeF2Se4 have been successfully synthesized. From Ba3GeF2Se4 (Δn = 0.063 @1064 nm) to Ba2GeF2Q3 (Q = S, Se) (Δn = 0.109 and 0.103 @1064 nm, respectively), their birefringences achieved doubling. The structure-property relationship study shows the enhanced birefringence originates from the modulation of configuration of their ionic lattices and highly polymerized covalent lattices. These provide not only promising IR birefringent crystals, Ba2GeF2Q3, but also some insights for designing IR birefringent materials.

Itinerant antiferromagnetism in Co3S4-delta

Abstract:We present experimental and theoretical investigations for the cobalt thiospinel Co3S4-8. High-quality samples of Co3S4-8 (8 -0.1) were prepared so as to measure their intrinsic properties. The measurements of magnetic susceptibility, specific heat, and electrical transport consistently indicate an antiferromagnetic transition at -60 K, which is attributed to long-range magnetic ordering in the Co(A) (A-site Co ions) diamond sublattice. In addition, there exists a short-range magnetic ordering at around 120 K associated with the magnetic frustrations. The high-temperature magnetic susceptibility obeys Curie-Weiss law, from which a small effective magnetic moment of 1.0 mu B per formula unit is yielded. The main experimental results can be interpreted by the density-functional-theory calculations with a Hubbard U correction of -0.5 eV. Combining the experimental measurements with the theoretical calculations, we conclude that Co3S4 represents a rare example of itinerant-electron diamond-lattice antiferromagnet with moderate electron correlations.
Observation of Superconductivity in Tetragonal FeS

Abstract:The possibility of superconductivity in tetragonal FeS has attracted considerable interest because of its similarities to the FeSe superconductor. However, all efforts made to pursue superconductivity in tetragonal FeS have failed so far, and it remains controversial whether tetragonal FeS is metallic or semiconducting. Here we report the observation of superconductivity at 5 K in tetragonal FeS that is synthesized by the hydrothermal reaction of iron powder with sulfide solution. The obtained samples are highly crystalline and less air-sensitive, in contrast to those reported in the literature, which are meta-stable and air-sensitive. Magnetic and electrical properties measurements show that the samples behave as a paramagnetic metal in the normal state and exhibit superconductivity below 5 K. The high crystallinity and the stoichiometry of the samples play important roles in the observation of superconductivity. The present results demonstrate that tetragonal FeS is a promising new platform to realize high-temperature superconductors.

Abstract:The compounds with ternary structures of the chalcopyrite family Cu-III-Se2 (III = Al, Ga, In, Cr) form a wide group of semiconductor materials with diverse optical and electrical properties, and the addition of FeSe binary compound produces alloys of the type (Cu-III-Se2)1-x(Fe-Se)x. These types of materials have received increasing attention as promising thermoelectric materials due to their high efficiency, tunable transport properties, high elemental abundance and low toxicity. This work aims to synthesize and characterize structurally a new material belonging to this semiconductor system with x = 1⁄2, the quaternary compound CuFeCrSe3. This material was prepared by the melt and anneal technique and its structure was refined from Xray powder diffraction pattern using the Rietveld method. The X-ray powder pattern was mainly composed of CuFeCrSe3 (79.1%) with CuCr2Se4 (20.9%) appearing as secondary phase. The principal phase crystallizes with tetragonal symmetry in the space group P 4 2c (No 112), Z = 1, with a = 5.5082(2) Å, c = 10.943(1) Å, V = 332.01(1) Å3. The refinement of 18 instrumental and structural parameters led to Rp = 8.8 %, Rwp = 9.1 %, Rexp = 7.8 % and S = 1.2. This material, belonging to the semiconductor system I-II-III-VI3, crystallizes with a CuFeInSe3-type structure in a normal adamantane-structure. CuFeCrSe3 is a new semiconductor compound, related to the superionic phase CuCrSe2, and can be considered as a potential candidate for mediumtemperature thermoelectric applications.

Abstract:We present experimental and theoretical investigations for the cobalt thiospinel Co3S4-8. High-quality samples of Co3S4-8 (8 -0.1) were prepared so as to measure their intrinsic properties. The measurements of magnetic susceptibility, specific heat, and electrical transport consistently indicate an antiferromagnetic transition at -60 K, which is attributed to long-range magnetic ordering in the Co(A) (A-site Co ions) diamond sublattice. In addition, there exists a short-range magnetic ordering at around 120 K associated with the magnetic frustrations. The high-temperature magnetic susceptibility obeys Curie-Weiss law, from which a small effective magnetic moment of 1.0 mu B per formula unit is yielded. The main experimental results can be interpreted by the density-functional-theory calculations with a Hubbard U correction of -0.5 eV. Combining the experimental measurements with the theoretical calculations, we conclude that Co3S4 represents a rare example of itinerant-electron diamond-lattice antiferromagnet with moderate electron correlations.

Abstract:We have investigated the magnetic and electric ground states of a quasi-two-dimensional triangular lattice antiferromagnet (TLAF), Ba3CoNb2O9, in which the effective spin of Co2+ is 1/2. At zero field, the system undergoes a two-step transition upon cooling at T-N2 = 1.36 K and T-N1 = 1.10 K and enters a 120 degrees ordered state. By applying magnetic fields, a series of spin states with fractions of the saturation magnetization M-s are observed. They are spin states with 1/3, 1/2, 2/3 (or root 3/3) M-s. The ferroelectricity emerges in all spin states, either with collinear or noncollinear spin structure, which makes Ba3CoNb2O9 another unique TLAF exhibiting both a series of magnetic phase transitions and multiferroicity. We discuss the role of quantum fluctuations and magnetic anisotropy in contributing more complex phase diagram compared to its sister multiferroic TLAF compound Ba3NiNb2O9 [J. Hwang et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 109, 257205 (2012)].

Abstract:Low-dimensional materials have attracted extensive research interest in recent years owing to their interesting structural chemistry and physical properties, which will greatly deepen our knowledge of these materials and could lead to additional breakthroughs in the future. Herein we have synthesized and characterized Ba2 BiFeSe5 , which adopts a quasi-one-dimensional structure and possesses some fascinating physical properties. The sharp divergences between the field-cooled (FC) and the zero-field-cooled (ZFC) data and the rather small magnetic moment per Fe3+ (0.07 μB ) strongly suggest that the title compound is weakly ferromagnetic with a high magnetic transition temperature above room temperature, which is controlled by competing super-exchange interactions within and between [FeBiSe5 ]∞ anionic ladders. Moreover, with its narrow bandgap of 0.95 eV, Ba2 BiFeSe5 shows photoelectric properties with a photocurrent density of approximately 30 mA cm2 at 5 V. Our study demonstrates that Ba2 FeBiSe5 might be a new type of multifunctional material that deserves further investigation.

Abstract:Layered chalcogenides have attracted much attentions due to their unique physical properties. Herein, two novel layered quaternary chalcogenides K2FeCu3Q4 (Q = S and Se) with the ThCr2Si2-type structure have been synthesized via a facile hydrothermal approach. Their structures were confirmed by XRD, XPS and TEM. The magnetic studies revealed that K2FeCu3S4 nanoparticles show a superparamagnetic behaviour at low temperature while K2FeCu3Se4 microcrystals exhibit a weak ferromagnetic behaviour with a high magnetic transition temperature. The temperature dependence, ρ(T) is semiconducting for all the compounds and explained well by the variable range hopping (VRH) rather than the adiabatic small polaron hopping (SPH). The band gaps of K2FeCu3Q4 are in the range of 0.99–1.28 eV. Their photoelectric responses were also characterized, which demonstrated their potential for application in photovoltaic devices.
