Abstract:Alternative lead-free chalcogenide perovskites have been widely studied in recent years and they are strongly proposed for effective photovoltaic applications because their non-toxic chemical composition, good phase stability, and excellent optoelectronic properties. Herein, the phase stability, optoelectronic properties, and photovoltaic performance of AHfX3 (A = Ca, Sr, Ba; X = S, Se) and their alloys are rigorously explored. The optimized lattice parameters of CaHfS3, SrHfS3, and BaHfS3 agree well with the experimental data. The distorted orthorhombic phase stability is verified to be highly stable for AHfSSe2 and AHfSe3 (A = Ca, Sr, Ba). The exploration from the screened hybrid functional HSE06 reveals that the electronic band gaps of SrHfS3 and BaHfS3 are predicted accurately, and the energy band gap tuning is realized for AHfX3 via alloying Se. The nonlinear bandgap variation trend is presented for the studied compounds. The computed direct band gaps of AHfSe3 (A = Ca, Sr, Ba) are within 1.6–1.8 eV. Moreover, AHfSe3 (A = Ca, Sr, Ba) shows excellent properties such as small electron and hole effective masses (0.5−0.7m 0), low exciton binding energy (∼60 meV), and high visible-light absorption coefficient (>4 × 105 cm−1). Lastly, the theoretical prediction from the spectroscopic limited maximum efficiency shows that the maximum efficiency of BaHfSe3 can reach up to 27.3 %, which serves as the best candidate for photovoltaic applications. This discovery can provide valuable guidance for further experimental exploration of BaHfSe3 as an option for high-efficiency solar absorbing material.
