Abstract:Even though metal oxide nanoparticles have presented huge potentials in enhancing the comprehensive performance of polymer composites, the incompatible interface and weak dispersion state between metal oxide and polymer chains significantly limits the properties improvement. Towards above problem, bio-based compounds are used to regulate the interfacial interaction. Three kind of as-prepared metal oxide nanoparticles (ZnO, Fe2O3 and Co3O4) are decorated by N-octyl triethoxysilane firstly, which possesses a long alkane chain as guest. With hydrophobic inner cavity structure, β-Cyclodextrin as host is successfully knotted onto the surface of metal oxide nanoparticles based on the classical host-guest assembly. Attributed to the hydroxyl groups of β-Cyclodextrin, a strong interfacial interaction between metal oxide nanoparticles and thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) matrix is formed, as SEM images showed. As a result, the mechanical properties have been significantly improved. For example, break strength of ZnO-n oct-βCD@TPU, Fe2O3-n oct-βCD@TPU and Co3O4-n oct-βCD@TPU are increased 14.0%, 24.4% and 36.2%, respectively, compared with pure TPU. Meanwhile, flame retardancy of TPU and its nanocomposites have been evaluated by cone calorimeter test. According results suggest that modified metal oxide nanoparticles can promote the formation of dense char layer, while the catalysis effect of metal oxide nanoparticles is capable of suppressing the smoke releasing. In detail, the peak HRR values of ZnO-n oct-βCD@TPU, Fe2O3-n oct-βCD@TPU and Co3O4-n oct-βCD@TPU have been decreased to 723.6, 633.3 and 714.8 kW/m2 from 819.2 kW/m2 of pure TPU. This easy approach effectively overcomes the weak interaction between metal oxide nanoparticles and TPU resin, thus promoting the fire safety and mechanical performance of polymer nanocomposites.
