Abstract:The oxidation behavior of the zinc-magnesium alloys was investigated with oxidation time in an air atmosphere at a melting temperature of 450°C. The results of thermogravimetric measurements revealed that the oxidation reaction process of the alloy was divided into three distinct stages, the oxidation incubation period of initial oxide film formation is followed by the accelerated oxidation period of non-protective oxidation, and finally by the stable oxidation period. The oxide film has a relatively flat macroscopic surface during the initial oxidation incubation period, and on the microscopic surface, there are folds, swells, and nodules, which are related to the evaporation of magnesium and the internal stresses in the oxide film. Subsequently, the folds of the oxide film increase in the degree of undulation and develop inward deeper into the metal melt, leading to increased oxidation and the appearance of an accelerated oxidation period. As the oxidation proceeds to 180 min, the oxidation products appear as ZnO, and the presence of a large amount of oxide increases the diffusion distance of O. The oxidation rate decreases to a stable oxidation period.
