Abstract:We report an unprecedented assembling performance of amide-containing, homo-structured poly(N-alkylacrylamide)s, through which they can assemble into discrete spherical particles with size ranging from tens of nanometres to several micrometres. For a specific polymer, a facile control over topology and scale of assembled structures can be accomplished via solvent conditions. Assembling using appropriate solvent gives rise to capsule-like assemblies. The molecular structure of polymers, such as the side chain chemistry and topology display striking impact on the size and morphology of resulting assemblies. These polymers might function as novel model systems for investigating complex functions performed by amide moieties in proteins, while this assembling offers a simple, facile but powerful and cost-effective manufacturing route for nano- or microstructured materials that may find great potential in diverse applications varying from cosmetics, drug delivery, nanomedicine, to biotechnology.

Abstract:ABSTRACTThe aggregation behavior and phase separation of nanorod (NR)/nanoparticle (NP) nanoinclusions immersed in semiflexible polymer brushes (PBs) are investigated by using molecular dynamics simulations. A variety of phases are formed by varying the size ratio q = σr/σp, where σr and σp are the diameters of NR and NPs, respectively, and the attractive interactions εM between NR/NP nanoinclusions and PBs. Ordered structures of NRs surrounded by large NPs are observed for the small size ratio q, and a dispersed mixture phase appears for the moderate size ratio q at weak attractive interaction. Meanwhile, the crystallization of NRs occurs at strong attractive interaction for the large size ratio q and a main face‐centered cubic (fcc) structure combined with a small amount of hexagonal‐closed packed (hcp) structure is observed. This investigation can provide some insights into the self‐assembly of complex nanoinclusions and promise a new approach for controlling the self‐assemble behavior of NPs. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Abstract:Here, we prepared monodisperse fluorinated nanospheres with the diameter regulated from 100 to 200 nm and PDI of the diameter lower than 0.05 polymerization-induced self-assembly (PISA). Mono/multilayered 2D and large-scale ordered 3D lattices were formed by solvent evaporation-induced colloidal self-assembly. Abstract:Poly(oligo(ethylene glycol) methacrylate) (POEGMA) block poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) brushes were synthesized on the silicon wafer surfaces by the surface-initiated atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) method. Atomic force microscopy, ellipsometry, and water contact angle methods were employed to study the surface morphology and stimulus-response behavior. It was found that simple solvent treatments could induce phase segregation of the POEGMA and PMMA segments thus introducing nanoscale patterns. The feature size could be less than 10 nm and was tunable on the nanoscale. Various patterns including spherical aggregates, wormlike aggregates, stripe patterns, perforated layers, and complete overlayers were obtained through adjusting the upper block layer thickness. These patterns could switch between the different morphologies reversibly after the treatment with selective solvents.

Abstract:Conventional synthesis of colloidal molecules (CMs) mainly depends on particle-based self-assembly of patchy building blocks. However, direct access to CMs by the self-assembly of isotropic colloidal subunits remains challenging. Here, we report the mass production of AB n -type CMs by polymerization-induced particle-assembly (PIPA), using a linear ABC triblock terpolymer system. Starting from diblock copolymer spheres, the association of spheres takes place in situ during the polymerization of the third block. The third blocks aggregate into attractive domains, which connect spheres into CMs. The stability of CMs is ensured, as long as the conversions are limited to ca. 50%, and the pH is low. The valence of AB n -type CMs (n = 2-6) is determined by the volume ratio of the polymer blocks. By tuning the volume ratio, 78.5% linear AB2-type CMs are yielded. We demonstrate that polymerization-induced particle-assembly is successful for the scalable fabrication of AB n -type CMs (50 g L-1), and can be easily extended to vastly different triblock terpolymers, for a wide range of applications.

Abstract:Synthesizing anisotropic polymeric nanoparticles (NPs) with well-defined shapes, dimensions, and molecular orientations is a very challenging task. Herein, we report the synthesis of surprisingly highly uniform shape-anisotropic polymer NPs with uniaxial internal molecular orientation. Keys to our method are synchronized polymerization and self-assembly (SPSA), which can even be realized by regular dispersion polymerization. This is demonstrated using a monomer containing a rigid 4-nitroazobenzene (NAB) side group. The short nucleation period, the completion of microphase separation before molecular motion is frozen, and sufficient low particle/solvent interfacial tension are shown to be the origins of the highly uniform dimensions, single liquid crystal domains, and well-defined anisotropic shape of particles. The liquid crystallization ability of the polymers, control of molecular weight distribution, and the polymerization kinetics are identified as three key factors controlling the NP formation. The uniformity of these NPs facilitates their SA formation into colloidal crystals. The particles exhibit optically anisotropic properties depending on orientations and, in particular, show intriguing photoswitchable LC-glass (order-disorder) transition, which can be used for the detection of ultraviolet (UV) light and allows the fabrication of photoreversible colloidal films.

Abstract:In this work, we report on a complex dynamic supramolecular assembly pathway for a perylene diimide (PDI) derivative; this pathway involves the sequential formation of three kinetically trapped assemblies (i.e., from smooth nanospheres to microspheres to nanofiber micro spheres) and thermodynamically stable microribbons. Interestingly, the stable nuclei, which are formed via the fusion of densely entangled nanofibers on the microspheres, enabled the direct anchoring of nanospheres at the termini for the growth of microribbons. Furthermore, we demonstrate the living nature of this system by observing the direct terminal growth of nanospheres on added microribbon seeds under identical self-assembly conditions. Our findings represent a significant step toward artificial systems that are capable of resembling biological systems.

Abstract:Self-organization of nanoparticles is an efficient strategy for producing nanostructures with complex, hierarchical architectures. The past decade has witnessed great progress in nanoparticle self-assembly, yet the quantitative prediction of the architecture of nanoparticle ensembles and of the kinetics of their formation remains a challenge. We report on the marked similarity between the self-assembly of metal nanoparticles and reaction-controlled step-growth polymerization. The nanoparticles act as multifunctional monomer units, which form reversible, noncovalent bonds at specific bond angles and organize themselves into a colloidal polymer. We show that the kinetics and statistics of step-growth polymerization enable a quantitative prediction of the architecture of linear, branched, and cyclic self-assembled nanostructures; their aggregation numbers and size distribution; and the formation of structural isomers.

Abstract:Hierarchical polyimides (PIs) not only show outstanding thermal stability and high mechanical strength but also have great advantages in terms of microstructure and surface area, which makes them highly valuable in various fields such as aerospace, microelectronics, adsorption, catalysis, and energy storage. However, great challenges still remain in the synthesis of hierarchical PIs with well-defined microstructure. Herein, polyamide acid salts (PAAS) with tunable ionization degree are synthesized first via the polymerization of dianhydride and diamine monomers in deionized water with 1,2-dimethylimidazole (DMIZ). Then cationic cetyltrimethylammonium chloride (CTAC) is added to the PAAS aqueous solution to induce the formation of polyelectrolyte-surfactant complexes based on electrostatic interaction. After a typical hydrothermal reaction (HTR) procedure, hierarchical PIs with different microstructures such as urchin-like PI microparticles, flower-like PI microparticles, and lamellar PI petals can be fabricated simply by changing the additive amount of DMIZ and CTAC. The nanostructure self-assemblies of PAAS are dominated by the charges on macromolecular chains and the formation of hierarchical structures of polymers is ascribed to a geometrical selection process during crystal growth. This work provides valuable insights into the self-assembly behaviors of polyelectrolyte systems for synthesizing well-defined hierarchical polymers.

Abstract:This article describes a novel supramolecular assembly-mediated strategy for the organization of Au nanoparticles (NPs) with different shapes (e.g., spheres, rods, and cubes) into large-area, free-standing 2D and 3D superlattices. This robust approach involves two major steps: (i) the organization of polymer-tethered NPs within the assemblies of supramolecular comblike block copolymers (CBCPs), and (ii) the disassembly of the assembled CBCP structures to produce free-standing NP superlattices. It is demonstrated that the crystal structures and lattice constants of the superlattices can be readily tailored by varying the molecular weight of tethered polymers, the volume fraction of NPs, and the matrix of CBCPs. This template-free approach may open a new avenue for the assembly of NPs into 2D and 3D structures with a wide range of potential applications.

Abstract:Atomic self-assembly in pure metals and metal alloys can lead into various conventional (cubic, hexagonal closepacked (hcp), and icosahedron) and non-conventional (Frank–Kasper and quasicrystal [1]) structures. The nonconventional crystalline structures often lead to unexpected physical properties. For example, the A15 (A3B type) Frank– Kasper phase of Nb3Sn, Nb3Zr and Nb3Ti are found to be superconducting. Metallic quasicrystals are hard and have low-friction, low-thermal conductivity, and special electronic properties. Beyond the atomic self-assembly, computer simulations have predicted many complex self-assembled structures, such as Frank–Kasper phases and quasicrystals, as a function of shape, size, and interaction for nanoparticles (Fig. 1) [2]. However, it has been challenging to experimentally achieve these structures from both hard (colloidal particles and mixtures) and soft (hierarchically self-assembled surfactants, dendrimers, and micellar block copolymers) nanoparticles. This is because precise shape, size, and interaction for colloidal nanoparticles are still difficult to control. In a recent report by Huang et al. [3], this grand challenge has been conquered by precise synthesis of rigid giant tetrahedra from molecular nanoparticles i.e. polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS), by using two orthogonal ‘click’ chemistry techniques, namely, the azide-alkyne [3 + 2] cycloaddition reaction and the thiol-ene reaction. Abstract:Salt bridges are predominant in protein construction and stabilization, yet largely unexplored for polymer nanoparticle synthesis. We herein report the use of l-histidine salt bridges to drive monomer preassembly and two-dimensional electrostatic self-assembly in aqueous photo-RAFT polymerization. l-histidine salt bridges drive the monomer clustering nucleation, complex coacervation, and Coulombic stabilization, leading to the 2 nm ultrasmall clusters and coacervate droplets. Homopolymerization leads to a precision two-dimensional electrostatic self-assembly via a droplet-monolayer-multilayer transition, i.e., salt-bridged homo-polymerization-induced self-assembly (PISA). Block copolymerization does not disturb the “salt-bridged homo-PISA” mechanism. Enhanced Coulombic repulsion via seeded polymerization of charged monomers using as-achieved multilayer lamellae (seeds) yields supercharged 5 nm ultrathin monolayer lamellae with high colloidal stability upon dilution, salting, and long-term storage, urgently needed for bioapplications. This work opens up a new avenue to use amino acid salt bridges for PISA synthesis of biologically important, yet hitherto inaccessible, salt-resistant ultrathin polyelectrolyte complex nanomaterials.

Abstract:Engineering of hollow particles with tunable internal structures often requires complicated processes and/or invasive cleavage. Halogen-bond driven 3D confined-assembly of block copolymers has shed light on the engineering of polymer organization along with the fabricating of unique nanostructures. Herein, a family of multilevel hollow-structured particles (e.g., fully porous, multi-chamber, multi-shell, and concentric multi-layer architectures) is reported via halogen-bond regulated 3D confined-assembly of amphiphilic polymer networks. To do so, polystyrene-b-poly(2-vinyl pyridine)-b-poly(ethylene oxide) (PS-b-P2VP-b-PEO) amphiphilic triblock copolymer is selected, where P2VP blocks act as halogen acceptor. Meanwhile, poly(3-(2,3,5,6-tetrafluoro-4-iodophenoxy) propyl acrylate) (PTFIPA) is employed as halogen donor. Halogen-bond driven donor-acceptor linking between PTFIPA and P2VP block presented in PS-b-P2VP-b-PEO, can lead to the formation of supramolecular polymeric networks, along with the increased P2VP domain and tunable hydrophobic volume. Therefore, an adjustable packing parameter (p) is thus anticipated, which can enable the morphology transformation sequence until an equilibrium state is reached. Moreover, computer simulations are further utilized as the tool to interpret such morphologies transition and identify the precise distribution of each component. Benefiting from the tunable hollow structure and a substantial surface for transporting purpose, these structurally novel particles open perspectives toward promising applications including encapsulation, nanoreactor, and catalyst support.

Abstract:Patterned surfaces with distinct regularity and structured arrangements have attracted great interest due to their extensive promising applications. Although colloidal patterning has conventionally been used to create such surfaces, herein, we introduce a novel 3D patterned poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) surface, synthesized by using a combination of colloidal templating and surface-initiated photoinduced electron transfer-reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (SI-PET-RAFT) polymerization. In order to investigate the temperature-driven 3D morphological variations at a lower critical solution temperature (LCST) of ∼32 °C, multifaceted characterization techniques were employed. Atomic force microscopy confirmed the morphological transformations at 20 and 40 °C, while water contact angle measurements, upon heating, revealed distinct trends, offering insights into the correlation between surface wettability and topography adaptations. Moreover, quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation monitoring and electrochemical measurements were employed to detect the topographical adjustments of the unique hollow capsule structure within the LCST. Tests using different sizes of PSNPs shed light on the size-selective capture-release potential of the patterned PNIPAM, accentuating its biomimetic open-close behavior. Notably, our approach negates the necessity for expensive proteins, harnessing temperature adjustments to facilitate the noninvasive and efficient reversible capture and release of nanostructures. This advancement hopes to pave the way for future innovative cellular analysis platforms.
Fabrication of polyhedral particles from spherical colloids and their self-assembly into rotator phases

Abstract:Particle shape is a critical parameter that plays an important role in self-assembly, for example, in designing targeted complex structures with desired properties. In the last decades an unprecedented range of monodisperse nanoparticle systems with control over the shape of the particles have become available. In contrast, the choice of micron-sized colloidal building blocks of particles with flat facets, i.e., particles with polygonal shapes, is significantly more limited. This can be attributed to the fact that, contrary to nanoparticles, the larger colloids are significantly harder to synthesize as single crystals. Herein, we demonstrate that the simplest building block, such as the micron-sized polymeric spherical colloidal particle, is already enough to fabricate particles with regularly placed flat facets, including completely polygonal shapes with sharp edges. As an illustration that the yields are high enough for further self-assembly studies we demonstrate the formation of 3D rotator phases of fluorescently labelled, micron-sized and charged rhombic dodecahedron particles. Our method for fabricating polyhedral particles opens a new avenue for designing new materials.

Abstract:The poly(allylamine hydrochloride)-g-pyrene-tetraphenylethylene (PAH-g-Py-g-TPE) copolymers with different ratios of Py and TPE are synthesized by grafting 1-pyrenecarboxaldehyde (Py-CHO) and tetraphenylethylenecarboxaldehyde (TPE-CHO) to PAH via a Schiff base reaction in methanol. The PAH-g-Py-g-TPE forms spherical micelles in water regardless of the ratios of Py and TPE, which can transform into different nanostructures after being incubated in pH 0 and pH 2 solutions, respectively. These nanomaterials including nanoparticles (NPs), nanorods (NRs), nanotubes (NTs) and nanoribbons (NBs) are composed of Py-CHO and TPE-CHO with different ratios, and emit fluorescence with colors different from the pure Py NRs and NTs, and TPE NPs.
