Abstract:The zero offset of the space-borne fluxgate magnetometer (FGM) tends to change slowly with time. Thus, it is critical to improve the accuracy of the in-flight calibration for the FGM. Recently, an in-flight calibration method based on mirror mode structures has been proposed, and we refer to it as the Wang-Pan method II in this paper. Here, we analyze the applicability of the Wang-Pan method II to the regions of the solar wind, the terrestrial magnetosheath and the magnetotail current sheet. We find that the Wang-Pan method II can achieve a higher accuracy of the zero offset when using more mirror mode structures or linear magnetic hole events. In addition, the strength of background magnetic field and the magnetic depression of the events can affect the calculation accuracy of the Wang-Pan Method II. In the solar wind and the magnetotail current sheet, the calculation error of the Wang-Pan method II is as high as 70% within +/- 0. 2 nT, and the calculation error is about 1 order of magnitude in the magnetosheath larger than that in the solar wind or the magnetotail current sheet. To improve the calibration accuracy of the Wang-Pan method II based on mirror mode structures, we have studied the effects of several parameters of linear magnetic hole events on the zero offset calibration error. The results would help to the selection of mirror mode structures or linear magnetic hole events for the application of the WangPan method II.
