Abstract:We have generated 81 independently controllable beams using a spatial light modulator and combined them on a diffractive combiner, to characterize the combiner and develop a fast phase error detection scheme. A key parameter of the diffractive combiner is measured in a new way, enabling an efficient combination when programming calibrated phases of each beam. This testbed provides a platform for development of advanced feedback phase control of high channel-count beam combination.

Abstract:We demonstrate a new method for controlling diffractive, high-power beam combination, sensing phase errors by analyzing the intensity pattern of uncombined side beams at the output. A square array of eight beams is combined with <0.3% stability and 84.6% efficiency. As the channel count is increased, so does the usable information, enabling scaling to large channel counts without significant slowing of control loop response time, an advantage over single-input algorithms.

Abstract:We have developed a scalable, ultrafast laser beam combination scheme, which can combine many beams using two diffractive optics. A feature of this approach is the information contained in the uncombined output beams, which can be used to derive phase error information. We show that a machine-learning algorithm can learn to stabilize beam combination with high efficiency, by finding correlations between uncombined output beam patterns and phase errors.

Abstract:White-light non-diffraction beams such as Airy beam and Bessel beam have potential applications in multispectral imaging and micromanipulation. Generation of white-light Airy beam and Bessel beam with high quality and high efficiency still remains challenging for conventional diffractive or refractive optics which suffers from significant chromatic dispersion. In this paper, both high-quality white-light Airy beam and Bessel beam are generated using a deformable mirror by modulating the incident LED beam with tunable cubic and conical wavefronts. The main lobe of the generated white-light non-diffraction beams does not suffer from chromatic dispersion along the propagation. The results also show that the generation of the white-light Bessel beam has higher requirements for spatial coherence than white-light Airy beams. Our work expands the understanding of the white-light non-diffraction beams and paves the way for the applications.

Abstract:We develop a rapidly converging algorithm for stabilizing a large channel-count diffractive optical coherent beam combination. An 81-beam combiner is controlled by a novel, machine-learning based, iterative method to correct the optical phases, operating on an experimentally calibrated numerical model. A neural-network is trained to detect phase errors based on interference pattern recognition of uncombined beams adjacent to the combined one. Due to the non-uniqueness of solutions in the full space of possible phases, the network is trained within a limited phase perturbation/error range. This also reduces the number of samples needed for training. Simulations have proven that the network can converge in one step for small phase perturbations. When the trained neural-network is applied to a realistic case of 360 degree full range, an iterative scheme exploits random walking at the beginning, with the accuracy of prediction on phase feedback direction, to allow the neural-network to step into the training range for fast convergence. This neural-network-based iterative method of phase detection works tens of times faster than the commonly used stochastic parallel gradient descent approach (SPGD) using a single-detector and random dither when both are tested with random phase perturbations.

Abstract:An 8-beam, diffractive coherent beam combiner is phase controlled by a learning algorithm trained while optical phases drift, using a differential mapping technique. Combined output power is stable to 0.4% with 95% of theoretical maximum efficiency, limited by the diffractive element.

Abstract:<p>We develop a scalable multi-stage beam combining system based on the superposition of four tapered diode laser amplifiers using the coherent polarization beam combining. By employing the combination of master oscillator power amplification and active phase control of each amplifier, a stable output power of 6.9 W is obtained with a nearly diffraction-limited beam quality. The combining efficiency is 72%, and the brightness is improved by a factor of 3.3 compared to that of a single amplifier. Our system provides a new solution to obtain a high-coherence and high-brightness diode laser beam.</p>

Abstract:We present an experimental study on tilt-tip (TT) and phase-locking (PL) control in a coherent beam combination (CBC) system of adaptive fiber laser array. The TT control is performed using the adaptive fiber-optics collimator (AFOC), and the PL control is realized by the phase modulator (PM). Cascaded and simultaneous controls of TT and PL using stochastic parallel gradient descent (SPGD) algorithm are investigated in this paper. Two-fiber-laser-, four-fiber-laser-, and six-fiber-laser-arrays are employed to study the TT and PL control. In the cascaded control system, only one high-speed CMOS camera is used to collect beam data and a computer is used as the controller. In a simultaneous control system one high-speed CMOS camera and one photonic detector (PD) are employed, and a computer and a control circuit based on field programmable gate array (FPGA) are used as the controllers. Experimental results reveal that both cascaded and simultaneous controls of TT using AFOC and PL using PM in fiber laser array are feasible and effective. Cascaded control is more effective in static control situation and simultaneous control can be applied to the dynamic control system directly The control signals of simultaneous PL and TT disturb each other obviously and TT and PL control may compete with each other, so the control effect is limited.

Abstract:Recently, optimization techniques have had a significant impact in a variety of fields, leading to a higher signal-to-noise and more streamlined techniques. We consider the possibility for using programmable phase-only spatial optimization of the pump beam to influence the supercontinuum generation process. Preliminary results show that significant broadening and rough control of the supercontinuum spectrum in the visible region are possible without loss of input energy. This serves as a proof-of-concept demonstration that spatial effects can controllably influence the supercontinuum spectrum, leading to possibilities for utilizing supercontinuum power more efficiently and achieving excellent spectral control.

Abstract:We describe a convenient way to generate arbitrary vector beams by using a spatial light modulator, based on interferometric superposition of two orthogonally polarized beams. In our constructed optical setup, the SLM is used to produce a computer-generated holographic grating that diffracts a linearly polarized incident light into the +1st and -1st diffraction orders with desired wavefronts. After the two diffraction beams pass through two quarter wave-plates, the left- and right-handed circularly polarizations are yielded, respectively. Then a Rochi grating is utilized to recombine the two beams into single one such that any desired polarization configuration is achieved. We demonstrate the versatility of our method through optical experiment, in which a variety of polarization beams are realized. By making use of the incident wave with helical phase, our technique can produce both cylindrically symmetric and asymmetric polarizations. To the best of our knowledge, the experimental realization of cylindrically asymmetric polarization is reported for first time. We also study the focal properties of vector beam through a high numerical aperture lens. Starting from Richards-Wolf vectorial diffraction theory we calculate the focal field distribution and obtain some interesting focal volume structures, such as flat-topped focus, doughnut focus with special dark volume structure.

Abstract:Based on the theory of electromagnetically induced transparency, we study the formation of all-optical blazed transmission gratings in a coherently driven three-level atomic system using intensity-modulated images in coupling fields. Also, we analyze the feasibility of high-speed (megahertz) modulation for the induced gratings by means of image-bearing flat-top pulse trains. Consequently, continuous-wave probe fields can be efficiently and rapidly deflected in free space. When more sophisticated images are adopted, our scheme can provide further possibilities of all-optical beam splitting and fanning.

Abstract:Due to the fantastic properties and diverse applications of specific beams, optical beam shaping has attracted intensive attentions recently. Generally, these beams can be converted from Gaussian beams via particular spatial amplitude or phase control. In this work, we present a liquid crystal photopatterning technique based on dynamic microlithography with a polarisation-sensitive photoalignment agent. This technique enables the accurate, arbitrary and reconfigurable azimuthal angle control of liquid crystals, thus providing a powerful approach for the manipulation of light. By this means, the tailoring of arbitrary fine microstructures with binary or continuously space-variant liquid crystal azimuthal orientations are demonstrated. We briefly review our recent work on some specially designed patterns and corresponding specific optical fields. High-quality vortex beams, vector beams and Airy beams are generated with unprecedented flexibility in the design and control of light wavefront. Besides high efficiency, good electrical switchability and broad wavelength tolerance, the proposed devices also exhibit merits of compact size, low cost, dynamic mode conversion and polarisation controllable energy distribution, and are available for short pulse and intense light modulation. This work may pave a bright way towards beam shaping and bring new possibilities for the design of novel advanced liquid crystal photonic devices.[GRAPHICS].
Ultrafast dynamic beam steering with optical frequency comb arrays

Abstract:Efficient spatiotemporal control of optical beams is of paramount importance in diverse technological domains. Conventional systems focusing on quasi-static beam control demand precise phase or wavelength tuning for steering. This work presents a time-efficient solution for dynamic beam steering, emphasizing high-duty-cycle operation with fast scan rates, and eliminating the need for active tuning of the beam direction. We achieve 100%-duty-cycle scans at a rate of $\sim$9.8 GHz within an angular range of $\sim$1$^\circ$. Furthermore, leveraging the dispersion characteristics of a virtually imaged phased array (VIPA), we devise a broadband source array that seamlessly transitions from continuous-angular steering to pulsed discrete-angular operation, unlocking possibilities for high-sensitivity angle-, range-, and time-resolved imaging. We also elucidate the adaptability of integrated photonic designs incorporating wavelength-selective switches and spectral dispersers, for enabling a versatile on-chip realization of the proposed beam steering schemes.

Abstract:Wavefront control is the fundamental for various optical elements. Spatial light modulator (SLM), most of which consists of numerous discrete electrically driven micro-size liquid crystal (LC) pixels, could modulate the phase of light dynamically and has attracted intensive attentions. However, the complex electrode matrix makes the SLM costly, optical inefficient, and limiting the quality of output beams. Here, I present an optically addressed LC SLM based on the combination of a rewritable photoalignment agent and a dynamic polarization photo exposing system [1]. This technique enables the accurate, arbitrary and reconfigurable azimuthal angle control of LCs, thus supplies a powerful approach for the manipulation of light. By this means, the tailoring of arbitrary fine microstructures with binary or continuously space-variant liquid crystal azimuthal orientations are demonstrated. Active coherent beam combining and beam steering using a spatial mode multiplexer

Abstract:Coherent beam combination is one promising way to overcome the power limit of one single laser. In this paper, we use a Multi-Plane Light Converter to combine 12 fibers at 1.03 micron with a phase locking setup. The overall loss measurement gives a combination efficiency in the fundamental Hermite-Gaussian mode as high as 70%. This setup can generate the fundamental and higher-order Hermite-Gaussian modes and has beam steering capabilities.

Abstract:A framework to focus structured light beams through a multiple scattering medium (MSM) with the full vector transmission matrix (VTM)-based digital optical phase conjugation (DOPC) is proposed. According to the DOPC principle, the required input field composed of two orthogonally linear polarization components can be calculated by the measured full VTM combined with a well-designed target field. Then the input field is encoded into a double-channel computer generated hologram displayed on a vector spatial light modulator to shape and control the polarization, amplitude and phase of the light before and after the MSM respectively. And the desired output field composed of several discrete focal spots can be obtained through the MSM. We demonstrate experimentally the feasibility of our method through several examples: generation of vector beams, array vector beams and vortex beams. We also demonstrate numerically the generation of clear optical vortex ring with high peak to background ratio through the MSM using our method. These results show that our method provides an effective way to control and optimize structured light beams focusing through the MSM.

Abstract:Partially coherent multi-Airy-like beams are investigated by introducing coordinate transformation parameters and combining them with the theory of multi-beam superposition under symmetrical conditions, for the case of dual and quad as examples. The accurate propagation position of the mutual-focusing point is obtained by analyzing the normalized spectral density (SD) curves at different planes. The outcomes show that both the optical frame and the interference pattern can be changed by means of adjusting the coordinate transformation parameters. For a special circumstance, the transverse SD overlapping profile is presented in a rotational four-square grid. In addition, the coordinate transformation parameters periodically affect the distance between the two main lobes, which provides us a new idea with adjusting the width of the optical frame edges. Moreover, both the peak intensity of the SD and the divergence speed can be controlled by tuning the value of the equivalent beam width. These results may provide new inspiration for applications of partially coherent Airy-like beams in optical propagation, capture, and communication.
