Abstract:Since detectors can only record the intensity of the wavefield, it is a long-standing issue to find an effective method to retrieve the phase information. A classic solution to the problem is coherent diffractive imaging (CDI), a lensless phase retrieval technique that reconstructs a complex wavefield from diffraction intensity data recorded by detectors using iterative algorithms. Coherent modulation imaging (CMI), an extended approach to CDI, enhances the process by introducing a known modulation to the wavefield at the sample plane, which removes ambiguities of CDI and reconstructs a complex wavefield from a single diffraction pattern. CMI relaxes dynamic range requirements for detectors and exhibits faster convergence and higher reliability. However, it's important to note that different modulation patterns can impact the results of CMI. Here we propose a co-optimization between optimal phase mask design and phase retrieval based on deep learning. By incorporating an accurate physical layer to simulate forward propagation, training a neural network to retrieve phase information and adding a module to optimize the phase mask, we effectively remove the ambiguities of the phase retrieval problem and improve reconstruction accuracy. Numerical simulations and experiments demonstrate that our method produces high-quality and robust reconstructions. In addition, instead of relying on iterative algorithms, the implementation of deep learning combined with physical layer can effectively accelerate the reconstruction process.

Abstract:Coherent beam combination offers a solution to the challenges associated with the power handling capacity of individual fibres, however, the combined intensity profile strongly depends on the relative phase of each fibre. Optimal combination necessitates precise control over the phase of each fibre channel, however, determining the required phase compensations is challenging because phase information is typically not available. Additionally, the presence of continuously varying phase noise in fibre laser systems means that a single-step and high-speed correction process is required. In this work, we use a spatial light modulator to demonstrate coherent combination in a seven-beam system. Deep learning is used to identify the relative phase offsets for each beam directly from the combined intensity pattern, allowing real-time correction. Furthermore, we demonstrate that the deep learning agent can calculate the phase corrections needed to achieve user-specified target intensity profiles thus simultaneously achieving both beam combination and beam shaping.

Abstract:We demonstrate a new method for controlling diffractive, high-power beam combination, sensing phase errors by analyzing the intensity pattern of uncombined side beams at the output. A square array of eight beams is combined with <0.3% stability and 84.6% efficiency. As the channel count is increased, so does the usable information, enabling scaling to large channel counts without significant slowing of control loop response time, an advantage over single-input algorithms.

Abstract:Coherent beam combination (CBC) with Actively Phase-Controlling is a key method to many applications. The core challenge of achieving a Diffraction-Limited output laser of CBC is to correct and lock the phase errors quickly between the sub-beams. A phase prediction method based on the convolutional neural network with a MSE-NPCD loss function is proposed to solve this problem. By using the proposed method, the phase errors can be predicted by a pair of far-field images in one-step. We also demonstrate the robustness and scalability by adding additional disturbance and expanding the scale of the sub-beams. The result shows that our method can achieve high accuracy and high speed combining effect in a tiled aperture CBC system.

A key parameter of the diffractive combiner is measured in a new way, enabling an efficient combination when programming calibrated phases of each beam. Abstract:We have developed a scalable, ultrafast laser beam combination scheme, which can combine many beams using two diffractive optics. A feature of this approach is the information contained in the uncombined output beams, which can be used to derive phase error information. We show that a machine-learning algorithm can learn to stabilize beam combination with high efficiency, by finding correlations between uncombined output beam patterns and phase errors.

Abstract:We incorporate deep learning (DL) into coherent beam combining (CBC) systems for the first time, to the best of our knowledge. Using a well-trained convolutional neural network DL model, the phase error in CBC systems could be accurately estimated and preliminarily compensated. Then, the residual phase error is further compensated by stochastic parallel gradient descent (SPGD) algorithms. The two-stage phase control strategy combined with DL and SPGD algorithms is validated to be a feasible and promising technique to alleviate the long-standing problem that the phase control bandwidth decreases as the number of array elements expands. Further investigation denotes that the proposed phase control technique could be employed to generate orbital angular momentum (OAM) beams with different orders by distinguishing the OAM beams of conjugated phase distributions.

Abstract:In contemporary times, the utilization of high-power lasers is progressively expanding. However, the potential of a single laser to generate power confronts inherent physical constraints, leading to limitations in its incremental power augmentation. To address this challenge, coherent beam combining technology has been introduced as a means to achieve amplified power output. In this paper, an intelligent phase control method for coherent beam combining is proposed, which introduces reinforcement learning algorithm to provide assistance for the control problem, designs algorithmic variables based on the physical model of coherent beam combining, deploys it in the environment for multiple interactions, and updates the neural network in real time using the feedback from the environment. The efficacy of the proposed algorithm is validated in a 7-channel coherent beam combining simulation system, and the experiment results show that the synthesized beam is strong and stable under the control of the algorithm, and the convergence of the algorithm as well as the control effect is discussed and validated in different environments, and its performance also exceeds that of the existing mainstream phase control algorithm SPGD.

Abstract:We analyze a new kind of machine learning algorithm designed to feedback stabilize coherently combined lasers. This algorithm learns differential, rather than absolute, values of action in phase space, in order to facilitate learning on initially unstable systems. Experiments have shown that this approach can control small-scale spatial beam combination with high stability. In this paper we analyze the algorithm's performance and limitations in depth, showing that it can continuously learn during operation in order to track changes. Using simulation, we extend the application to temporal combination, and show that it scales to more complex instances by combining 81 beams.

Abstract:We incorporate deep learning (DL) into tiled aperture coherent beam combining (CBC) systems for the first time, to the best of our knowledge. By using a well-trained convolutional neural network DL model, which has been constructed at a non-focal-plane to avoid the data collision problem, the relative phase of each beamlet could be accurately estimated, and then the phase error in the CBC system could be compensated directly by a servo phase control system. The feasibility and extensibility of the phase control method have been demonstrated by simulating the coherent combining of different hexagonal arrays. This DL-based phase control method offers a new way of eliminating dynamic phase noise in tiled aperture CBC systems, and it could provide a valuable reference on alleviating the long-standing problem that the phase control bandwidth decreases as the number of array elements increases.

Abstract:In massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems, hybrid analog-digital beamforming is an essential technique for exploiting the potential array gain without using a dedicated radio frequency chain for each antenna. However, due to the large number of antennas, the conventional channel estimation and hybrid beamforming algorithms generally require high computational complexity and signaling overhead. In this work, we propose an end-to-end deep-unfolding neural network (NN) joint channel estimation and hybrid beamforming (JCEHB) algorithm to maximize the system sum rate in time-division duplex (TDD) massive MIMO. Specifically, the recursive least-squares (RLS) algorithm and stochastic successive convex approximation (SSCA) algorithm are unfolded for channel estimation and hybrid beamforming, respectively. In order to reduce the signaling overhead, we consider a mixed-timescale hybrid beamforming scheme, where the analog beamforming matrices are optimized based on the channel state information (CSI) statistics offline, while the digital beamforming matrices are designed at each time slot based on the estimated low-dimensional equivalent CSI matrices. We jointly train the analog beamformers together with the trainable parameters of the RLS and SSCA induced deep-unfolding NNs based on the CSI statistics offline. During data transmission, we estimate the low-dimensional equivalent CSI by the RLS induced deep-unfolding NN and update the digital beamformers. In addition, we propose a mixed-timescale deep-unfolding NN where the analog beamformers are optimized online, and extend the framework to frequency-division duplex (FDD) systems where channel feedback is considered. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm can significantly outperform conventional algorithms with reduced computational complexity and signaling overhead.

Abstract:Optical phased arrays (OPAs) offer promising beam-steering solutions for ultra-small light detection and ranging applications and free-space optical communication systems. The paper presents a new machine learning assisted two-dimensional beam formation and steering technique, which calibrates phase errors via a convolutional neural network architecture to mitigate phase errors emanating from fabrication imperfections, thermal crosstalk and wavelength tuning effects. The technique is experimentally validated on an eight-channel OPA, and the results demonstrate strong control predictive capabilities with a very low mean squared error of 0.0026 and a high correlation coefficient of 0.97 after training. Reconstructed signals derived from a subset of predicted control inputs yielded a maximum lateral peak intensity deviation of a single pixel resolution (0.15°) from the ground truth, and no observable longitudinal displacement error, for a full-width at half-maximum beam-width of approximately 1.5°.

Abstract:We study the impact of phase errors between channels on the beam-combining efficiency in a coherent beam-combining system. A tiled aperture beam-combining system with various output channel numbers ranging from 3 to 37 was experimentally implemented using a spatial light modulator and related optics. We then examined how the beam-combining efficiency changes when applying phase differences between channels for various output beam configurations. A Gaussian random phase was applied to each channel for 500 samples, and the intensity variation of the central part of the combined beam was monitored to examine the beam-combining characteristics in the presence of phase error. The experimental results show that as the standard deviation value of the phase distribution increases, the combined beam efficiency rapidly decreases for a given channel number. Furthermore, the beam-combining efficiency becomes more sensitive to phase errors as the number of combined channels increases. The beam-combining efficiency was maintained at 95% or higher when the phase error between channels was below 0.03 λ . A numerical simulation was also conducted for the same output beam configuration, which agrees well with the results obtained from the experiment.

Abstract:This study explores the performance and channel-scalability of the covariance matrix adaptation evolution strategy (CMA-ES)-based coherent optical phase control algorithm for coherent beam combining (CBC) systems. Leveraging the probabilistic nature of its optimization process, the CMA-ES algorithm emerges as a promising candidate for a next-generation phase control algorithm for CBC systems. To assess its functionality and channel-scalability, we conduct numerical investigations into the CMA-ES-based phase control algorithm applied to both 37- and 61-channel CBC systems with varying its algorithmic parameters. For the 37-channel configuration, consistent results demonstrate an average beam combining efficiency (BCE) exceeding 0.9, with a constrained standard deviation of 0.1 with phase sample numbers surpassing 30. The analysis of the time complexity reveals that the CMA-ES-based algorithm efficiently converges to a BCE value of 0.9 within a 10 MHz bandwidth within a 5 μs atmospheric time scale. In the case of the 61-channel configuration, a majority of phase samples exhibit an average BCE exceeding 0.95, with a small number of trials slightly falling below 0.85 yet still achieving a BCE of approximately 0.8. Similar to the 37-channel case, with the bandwidth < 12 MHz, the CMA-ES-based algorithm can give rise to the BCE level of 0.9 within a 5 μs atmospheric time duration.

Abstract:The coherent combined vortex (CCV) beam generated by coherent beam combining technology is advantageous for remote sensing due to its high output power and large emitting aperture. However, the phase distortion generated by atmospheric turbulence would reduce the accuracy of remote sensing detection, necessitating wavefront phase correction. In this paper, we employ the angular fringe contrast of the CCV beam as a metric function and implement turbulence compensation by constructing the stochastic-parallel-gradient-descent (SPGD) phase correction system. The simulation results show that the SPGD phase correction system employing angular fringe contrast may successfully enhance the mode purity and light intensity distribution of the CCV beam. Furthermore, we apply the phase correction system to the remote sensing of rotation, and a more prominent Doppler shifts peak can be obtained.

Abstract:There exists the phase ambiguity problem in the coherent beam combining (CBC) system with centrosymmetric arrays, which means that multiple different piston aberrations may generate the same far-field image. This will cause that the far-field image can not correctly reflect the phase information, resulting in the performance degradation of image-based intelligent algorithms. In this paper, we make a theoretical analysis on phase ambiguity. To the best of our knowledge, we give the number and descriptions of all solutions of the phase ambiguity problem in above system for the first time. A method to solve phase ambiguity is proposed, which requires no additional optical devices. We designed simulations to verify our conclusions and methods. We believe that our work solves the phase ambiguity problem in theory and is conducive to improving the performance of image-based algorithms. In addition, we designed a two-stage algorithm to generate Bi-beam, which have valuables application in laser propagation.
