Abstract:Degradation in CH3NH3PbI3 (MAPbI(3)), when in contact with commonly used metal oxide transport layer materials in optoelectronic devices, is examined experimentally and theoretically. On the basis of the decomposition temperature, the interfacial stability decreases in the following order: MAPbI(3) + TiO2 similar to MAPbI(3) alone > MAPbI(3) + SnO2 > MAPbI(3) + NiO, consistent with thermodynamic data. When MAPbI(3) contacts NiO or SnO2, experimental results unequivocally show interfacial decomposition occurs at a lower temperature than bulk decomposition and produces different degradation products. Density functional theory calculations reveal an altered reaction pathway on oxide surfaces and elucidate the difference between NiO and TiO2. These findings pinpoint the importance of understanding the interaction between halide perovskite and other materials used in a device to achieve intrinsically stable devices.

Abstract:The methylammonium lead iodide (MAPbI3) perovskite has attracted considerable interest for its high-efficiency, low-cost solar cells, but is currently plagued by its poor environmental and thermal stability. To aid the development of robust devices, we investigate here the microscopic degradation pathways of MAPbI3 microplates. Using in situ transmission electron microscopy to follow the thermal degradation process, we find that under moderate heating at 85°C the crystalline structure shows a gradual evolution from tetragonal MAPbI3 to trigonal lead iodide layered crystals with a fixed crystallographic direction. Our solid-state nudged elastic band calculations confirm that the surface-initiated layer-by-layer degradation path exhibits the lowest energy barrier for crystal transition. We further show experimentally and theoretically that encapsulation of the perovskites with boron nitride flakes suppresses the surface degradation, greatly improving its thermal stability. These studies provide mechanistic insight into the thermal stability of perovskites that suggests new designs for improved stability.

Abstract:The triple-cation mixed halide perovskite Cs-0.05(MA(0.17)FA(0.83))(0.95)Pb(I0.83Br0.17)(3) emerges as one of the most promising candidates for photovoltaics due to superior optoelectronic properties, but the thermal stability is still a major challenge for the viability of perovskite solar cells towards commercialization. Herein, we firstly explore the thermal response of the photovoltaic performances to access device physical changes. It is shown that the efficiency loss originates from decreased charge mobility, increased trap density and generation of PbI2 charge recombination centers near the interface. In-depth analysis of evolutions in morphology, chemical composition, dynamic and electronic structure of the perovskite layer at the nanometer scales indicates that it is initial dangling bonds and vacancies on the imperfect surfaces decrease the activation energy and cause the perovskite decomposition in a layer-by-layer pathway sequentially from the film surface to bulk. Based on the results, a strategy of surface passivation to improve the thermal stability is demonstrated and discussed. This work for the first time provides insights into the physical and chemical change of such triple-cation perovskite and indicates that more effort should be invested in surface treatment for enhancing perovskite device stability.
Oxygen Intercalation Induced by Photocatalysis on the Surface of Hybrid Lead Halide Perovskites

Abstract:Methylammonium lead iodide (MAPbI(3)) perovskite has emerged as a dazzling nova in the solar cell realm. However, the robustness or stability of the material exposed to different ambiences is a key issue. In this paper, resonance Raman spectroscopy is combined with surface and bulk crystal characterizations to interpret the oxygen intercalation phenomenon on the surface of MAPbI(3). We observe that oxygen can intercalate into the frameworks of MAPbI(3) with the assistance of laser excitation. By lowering down the pressure in the experimental chamber, the intercalated oxygen can be readily removed. Xray photoelectron spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction characterizations suggest that Pb-O bonds are mainly formed on the surface of MAPbI(3) but are constrained to avoid the formation of PbO compound. The quantum chemical calculation based on density functional theory supports the above conclusions. The understanding of oxygen intercalation in MAPbI(3) shall benefit the improvement of stability of the important solar cell materials.

Abstract:This paper investigates the impact of microstructure on the degradation rate of methylammonium lead triiodide (MAPbI(3)) perovskite films upon exposure to light and oxygen. By comparing the oxygen induced degradation of perovskite films of different microstructure-fabricated using either a lead acetate trihydrate precursor or a solvent engineering technique-it is demonstrated that films with larger and more uniform grains and better electronic quality show a significantly reduced degradation compared to films with smaller, more irregular grains. The effect of degradation on the optical, compositional, and microstructural properties of the perovskite layers is characterized and it is demonstrated that oxygen induced degradation is initiated at the layer surface and grain boundaries. It is found that under illumination, irreversible degradation can occur at oxygen levels as low as 1%, suggesting that degradation can commence already during the device fabrication stage. Finally, this work establishes that improved thin-film microstructure, with large uniform grains and a low density of defects, is a prerequisite for enhanced stability necessary in order to make MAPbI(3) a promising long lived and low cost alternative for future photovoltaic applications.

Abstract:Photochemical stability of encapsulated films of mixed halide perovskites with a range of MAPb(I1-xBrx)3 compositions (solid solutions) was investigated under accelerated stressing using concentrated sunlight. Evolution of light absorption and the corresponding structural modifications in the films were recorded by UV-vis spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction (XRD), respectively. MAPbBr3 film exhibited no degradation. In MAPbI3 and mixed halide MAPb(I1-xBrx)3 films, decomposition of the perovskite material with crystallization of inorganic PbI2, and the corresponding degradation of light absorption, were recorded. Introduction of bromine into the solid solution was found to stress its structure and accelerate the degradation. The relevance of accelerated testing to standard operational conditions of solar cells was confirmed by comparison to degradation experiments under outdoor sunlight exposure. Reasons for the reduced stability of the mixed halide compositions are discussed.

Abstract:The stability of perovskite solar cells is one of the major challenges for this technology to reach commercialization, with water believed to be the major degradation source. In this work, a range of devices containing different cathode metal contacts in the configuration ITO/PEDOT:PSS/MAPbI(3)/PCBM/Metal are fully electrically characterized before and after degradation caused by steady illumination during 4 h that induces a dramatic reduction in power conversion efficiency from values of 12 to 1.8%. We show that a decrease in performance and generation of the S-shape is associated with chemical degradation of the metal contact. Alternatively, use of Cr2O3/Cr as the contact enhances the stability, but modification of the energetic profile during steady illumination takes place, significantly reducing the performance. Several techniques including capacitance voltage, X-ray diffraction, and optical absorption results suggest that the properties of the bulk perovskite layer are little affected in the device degradation process. Capacitance-voltage and impedance spectroscopy results show that the electrical properties of the cathode contact are being modified by generation of a dipole at the cathode that causes a large shift of the flat-band potential that modifies the interfacial energy barrier and impedes efficient extraction of electrons. Ionic movement in the perovskite layer changes the energy profile close to the contacts, modifying the energy level stabilization at the cathode. These results provide insights into the degradation mechanisms of perovskite solar cells and highlight the importance to further study the use of protecting layers to avoid the chemical reactivity of the perovskite with the external contacts.

Abstract:Perovskite-based solar cells are promising due to their rapidly improving efficiencies, but suffer from instability issues. Recently it has been claimed that one of the key contributors to the instability of perovskite solar cells is ion migration induced electrode degradation, which can be avoided by incorporating inorganic hole blocking layers (HBL) in the device architecture. In this work, we investigate the operational environmental stability of methylammonium lead iodide (MAPbI3) perovskite solar cells that contain either an inorganic or organic HBL, with only the former effectively blocking ions from migrating to the metal electrode. This is confirmed by X-ray photoemission spectroscopy measured on electrodes of degraded devices, where only electrodes of devices with an organic HBL show a significant iodine signal. Despite this, we show that when these devices are degraded under realistic operational conditions (i.e. constant illumination in a variety of atmospheric conditions), both types of devices exhibit nearly identical degradation behavior. These results demonstrate that contrary to prior suggestions, ion-induced electrode degradation is not the dominant factor in perovskite environmental instability under operational conditions.

Abstract:Although the rapid development of organic-inorganic metal halide perovskite solar cells has led to certified power conversion efficiencies of above 20%, their poor stability remains a major challenge, preventing their practical commercialization. In this paper, we investigate the intrinsic origin of the poor stability in perovskite solar cells by using a confocal fluorescence microscope. We find that the degradation of perovskite films starts from grain boundaries and gradually extend to the center of the grains. Firmly based on our findings, we further demonstrate that the device stability can be significantly enhanced by increasing the grain size of perovskite crystals. Our results have important implications to further enhance the stability of optoelectronic devices based on metal halide perovskites.

Abstract:Organic-inorganic hybrid perovskites are promising candidates for the next-generation solar cells. Many efforts have been made to study their structures in the search for a better mechanistic understanding to guide the materials optimization. Here, we investigate the structure instability of the single-crystalline CH3NH3PbI3 (MAPbI3) film by using transmission electron microscopy. We find that MAPbI3 is very sensitive to the electron beam illumination and rapidly decomposes into the hexagonal PbI2. We propose a decomposition pathway, initiated with the loss of iodine ions, resulting in eventual collapse of perovskite structure and its decomposition into PbI2. These findings impose important question on the interpretation of experimental data based on electron diffraction and highlight the need to circumvent material decomposition in future electron microscopy studies. The structural evolution during decomposition process also sheds light on the structure instability of organic-inorganic hybrid perovskites in solar cell applications.

Abstract:To date, the potential exploitation of hybrid organic-inorganic perovskites (HOIPs) in photovoltaic technologies has been significantly hampered by their poor environmental stability. HOIP degradation can be triggered by conventional operational environments, with excessive heating and exposure to oxygen and moisture significantly reducing the performances of HOIP-based solar cells. An imperative need emerges for a thorough investigation on the impact of these factors on the HOIP stability. In this work, the degradation of methylammonium lead bromide (CH 3 NH 3 PbBr 3 ) thin films, deposited via spin-coating on indium tin oxide (ITO) and strontium titanate (STO) substrates, was investigated by combining Raman and ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis) absorption spectroscopy, as well as optical and fluorescence microscopy. We assessed the physical and chemical degradation of the films occurring under diverse preservation conditions, shedding light on the byproducts emerging from different degradation pathways and on the optimal HOIP preservation conditions.

Abstract:A deep understanding of the relationship between the surface termination of organic-inorganic metal halide perovskites and their structural degradation caused by environmental stimuli is critical for increasing the practicability of perovskite-based photovoltaic devices. In this work, the role of different surface termination on the degradation of CH3NH3PbI3 (MAPbI3) perovskite upon simultaneous exposure to water and oxygen in the presence of light is systematically investigated using density functional theory (DFT) and ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) simulations methods. Our results show that photogenerated electrons increase the interaction of H2O and O2 molecules on the MAPbI3 perovskite and the coexistence of H2O and O2 molecules degrade the MAPbI3 perovskite surface faster than the presence of either monomer on the surface. AIMD results indicate that the PbI2-terminated MAPbI3 surface undergoes significant structural degradation upon simultaneous exposure to light, H2O, and O2, whereas the MAI-terminated surface is stable. Furthermore, a series of MAPbI3-based perovskite solar cells (PSCs) with different concentrations of MAI precursor are fabricated, and their photovoltaic performance is studied. Our experimental results show that the PSC treated with 3 mg mL−1 of MAI has achieved a maximum PCE of 16.16% and a larger VOC of 1.02 V, with correspondingly improved stability. The finding presented here provides a strategy for improving the quality of the MAPbI3 perovskite layer and its photovoltaic performance.

Preliminary exploration of the influence of N+/NH+ ions/groups bombardment at TiO2 ETLs on performance of MAPbI3 perovskite solar cells

Abstract:The service stability of organic–inorganic hybrid metal halide perovskite solar cells (PSCs) is one of most important factors, which is seriously influenced by the decomposition of perovskite layer. Especially, the decomposition of perovskite layer could deteriorate the interface between perovskite layer and TiO2 electron transport layer (ETL). In this work, TiO2 ETLs are prepared by the sputtering technique and traditional spin-coating technique. Then, TiO2 ETLs are bombarded by N+/NH x + ions/groups. PSCs with all TiO2 ETLs are prepared and measured. The results show that after bombardment, N+/NH x + ions/groups could chemically react with Ti/O ions at surface of TiO2 ETLs. As a result, the conduction band minimum and transfer resistance of TiO2 ETLs both deteriorate, which decrease the power conversion efficiency of PSCs seriously. While, because anatase TiO2 (001) crystal face consists of saturated O/Ti ions and displays the highest surface free energy, TiO2 ETLs with anatase (001) preferred orientation displays the optimal restraint on deterioration of power conversion efficiency caused by N+/NH x + ions/groups bombardment. Based on above results, TiO2 ETLs with anatase (001) preferred orientation should be the optimal one for PSCs, which could improve the service stability obviously.

Abstract:Organometal halide perovskite materials are presently some of the pacesetters for light harvesting in hybrid photovoltaic devices because of their excellent inherent electrical and optical properties. However, long-term durability of such perovskite materials remains a major bottleneck for their commercialization especially in countries with hot and humid climatic conditions, thus violating the international standards for photovoltaic technology. Albeit, TiO2 as an electron-transport layer has been well investigated for perovskite solar cells; the high-temperature processing makes it unsuitable for low-cost and large-scale roll-to-roll production of flexible photovoltaic devices. Herein, we have chosen low-temperature (<150 °C)-processable nanostructured ZnO as the electron-selective layer and used a two-step method for sensitizing ZnO nanorods with methylammonium lead iodide (MAPbI3) perovskite, which is viable for flexible photovoltaic devices. We have also elaborately addressed the effect of the annealing duration on the conversion of a precursor solution into the required perovskite phase on ZnO nanostructures. The investigations show that the presence of ZnO nanostructures accelerates the rate of degradation of MAPbI3 films under ambient annealing and thus requires proper optimization. The role of ZnO in enhancing the degradation kinetics of the perovskite layer has been investigated by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and a buffer layer passivation technique. The effect of the annealing duration of the MAPbI3 perovskite on the optical, morphological, and compositional behavior has been closely studied and correlated with the photovoltaic efficiency. The study captures the degradation behavior of the commercially interesting MAPbI3 perovskite on a ZnO electron-transport layer and thus can provide insight for developing alternative families of perovskite material with better thermal and environmental stability for application in low-cost flexible photovoltaic technology.

Abstract:The pathway of surface structure evolution plays a vital role in determining the stability of the halide perovskites. Understanding the mechanism of surface instability and how external stimuli interact with the surface is essential for developing strategies to mitigate the degradation of halide perovskites. Here, we directly observed structural evolutions on the surface of CsPbBr3 via an integrated differential phase contrast scanning transmission electron microscope. We find that surface degradation, different from bulk decomposition, follows a layer-by-layer pathway in the CsPbBr3 perovskite. This layer-by-layer decomposition method further facilitated a coating strategy to mitigate the degradation via preserving the integrity of the surface layer, as verified through in situ methods. Thus, we have achieved the improved stability of perovskites and as-fabricated light-emitting diodes. These findings advance the fundamental understanding on the mechanism of surface instability and effectiveness of coating, thus providing guidance for future study of surface protection toward stable optoelectronic devices.

Abstract:The stability of hybrid halide perovskites (HPs) is one of the main factors hindering their potential commercial application. Numerous environmental agents are known to degrade HPs and their devices, including temperature, which can cause chemical modifications even at operational temperatures. Thermal degradation has been the subject of major studies in pure and HP-related compounds that have paved the way for a deep understanding of the phenomenon. However, thermally induced modifications in mixed-cation HPs have not been addressed in detail yet. In the present work, we report a systematic study of thermal degradation over a wide range of compositions of methylammonium lead iodide (MAPbI 3 ) partially substituted by guanidinium (GA + ) and formamidinium (FA + ), using diverse experimental techniques and thermal treatment conditions. The results indicated that mixed-cation HPs were more stable than pure MAPbI 3 . Thermal degradation followed the volatilization of MA + and MA + -related chemical species with PbI 2 consequently appearing; however, GA + -rich compositions could suffer from an additional degradation pathway by the segregation of non-perovskite GAPbI 3 , reducing the material's thermal stability. This process also provoked a change in the degradation kinetic law. Remarkably, the simultaneous substitution with FA + inhibited the formation of GAPbI 3 , even in compositions with high GA + contents. Our work advances the crucial understanding of thermal degradation processes and how to increase the thermal stability of halide perovskites.

Abstract:Organometal halide perovskites are highly promising materials for photovoltaic applications due to the rapid growth of power conversion efficiency in recent years. However, thermal stability is still a major hurdle for perovskite solar cells toward commercialization. Herein, we first explore the slow thermal response of the CH3NH3PbI3 perovskite crystal investigated via Auger electron spectroscopy (AES). AES image mapping directly observes the evolution of morphology and elemental distribution over time. The AES small spot analysis demonstrates the precise initial degradation position of perovskite with both information regarding physical changes in crystals and chemical changes in elemental bonding at the nanometer scale. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) was used to confirm the surface chemical bonding and composition of the perovskite crystals. This work provides the first insights into the physical and chemical changes of perovskites investigated by AES upon long-term exposure to heat under ambient conditions.
