Abstract:The catalytic performance of supported metals can be influenced by impurities on support. In this work, we regulated the surface properties of commercial Pd/Al2O3 by a thermally and chemically stable polymer, graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4), to tune the catalytic semi-hydrogenation performance. According to the studies of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), in situ infrared absorption spectroscopy (IR), and temperature-programmed desorption mass spectrometry (TPD-MS), we found that the modified Al2O3-g-C3N4 can regulate the electronic properties of its neighboring Pd particles, thereby weakening the adsorption strength of mono-olefins. Additionally, the g-C3N4 deposits could store H-spillover species. As a result, the Pd/Al2O3-U7 showed an enhanced isoprene semi-hydrogenation conversion rate and selectivity compared to that of unadorned Pd/Al2O3. More importantly, this phenomenon could also be observed on different types of commercial Al2O3 and g-C3N4 precursors.

Abstract:The reaction/diffusion kinetics are fundamentally determined by the electronic properties of supported Pd catalysts and further govern the catalytic activity and selectivity in the partial hydrogenation of alkynes. However, how the electronic metal-support interactions and the tradeoff between reaction and diffusion affect the catalytic performance still remain elusive. Here, the optimized catalyst Pd supported on carbon decorated with oxygen-deficient TiO2(Pd/TiO2-V-o@C) features a remarkable enhancement in performance for semihydrogenation of 2-methyl-3-butyn-2-ol with a TOF 31-fold higher than that of Lindlar catalyst. The improved performance of Pd/TiO2-V-o@C benefits from the fact that TiO2-V-o@C subtly modulates the electronic properties of Pd, and an appropriate amount of TiO2-V-o allows a decrease in the reaction barrier and C promotes the diffusion ability of the catalyst, achieving the balance between reaction and diffusion. By using microkinetic modeling, the reactivity difference of various catalysts is quantitatively predicted and the calculated turnover frequency volcano curve is rationalized as a function of reaction barrier and diffusion ability, which agrees well with the experimental results. The quantitative regulation of catalytic performance by tuning the support properties is a general strategy, which provides a basis to design robust catalysts for diverse reactions.
Effect of γ-Al2O3 Pore Structure on Activity of Supported Pd Catalysts in C9 Petroleum Resin Hydrogenation

Abstract:Three industrial γ-Al2O3s,namely W203,W217 and W251,were used as supports of Pd/γ-Al2O3 catalysts,in which W203 and W217 were typical mesoporous γ-Al2O3 supports,and W251 was a special macroporous support.Catalytic activity of the Pd/γ-Al2O3 catalysts in hydrogenation of C9 petroleum resin was investigated.The γ-Al2O3 supports and the Pd/γ-Al2O3 catalysts were characterized by means of N2 adsorption-desorption,CO chemisorption,SEM,TEM and XRD.The results indicated that the influence of the pore structure of the supported catalysts on the catalytic hydrogenation of C9 petroleum resin was significant and the catalyst with adequate macroporous structure showed higher activity and stability in catalytic hydrogenation of the macromolecules.Average pore sizes of the three industrial γ-Al2O3s,and activity and stability of the Pd/γ-Al2O3 catalysts followed with the same order: W203<W217<W251.Pd precursor could easily enter into W251 support interior with macropores,so the Pd dispersion was promoted and the catalyst with "egg white" structure formed.

Abstract:S was successfully doped into carbon via calcination and Pd size was modulated by adjusting the S content. Sulfur species were considered to be anchor sites, contributing to the highly dispersion of Pd nanoparticles. In addition, Pd/CS4 achieved 99.9% sel. With complete conversion in hydrogenation of o-chloronitrobenzene compared to Pd/AC (99.9% con., 61.6% sel.). Interestingly, catalysts with smaller metal size exhibited higher selectivity and lower activity, which was contrary to previous studies. It was suggested that electronic effects between S and Pd played an important role in this reaction, contributing to the excellent performance of the catalysts.

Abstract:Selective hydrogenation is a significantly important catalytic process in many industrial manufacture, where Pd based catalysts are the most common used. Here, the surface properties of γ-Al2O3 were modified by layered flower-like architectures of alkaline MgO by a simple hydrothermal method. Then, series of Pd/Al2O3-MgO catalysts for selective hydrogenation of isoprene were prepared by incipient wetness impregnation method. The results showed that the Pd/Al2O3-0.12MgO catalyst exhibited superior catalytic performance with high activity (93%) and high selectivity (99%) of semi-hydrogenation products. Systematic studies demonstrated that the support effect plays an important role in dispersing and stabilizing palladium particles. The reasons for the improved catalytic performance were ascribed to the high dispersion of Pd nanoparticles, the changed electronic structure of Pd and the strong interaction between the Pd nanoparticles and supports. This work opens a simple route to regulate the electronic properties of active metal sites by support modification for selective hydrogenation reaction.

Abstract:Metal catalyst in selective hydrogenation reactions often suffers from low selectivity and especially poor durability due to heavy coke formation. Here we report that precisely controlled porous alumina overcoating on a Pd catalyst using atomic layer deposition (ALD) not only remarkably enhances the selectivity to butenes, especially to 1-butene, but also achieves the best ever durability against deactivation in selective hydrogenation of 1,3-butadiene in the absence (or presence) of propene. Therein no visible activity declines or selectivity changes were observed during a total 124 h of reaction time on stream.

Abstract:Selective hydrogenation is an important industrial catalytic process in chemical upgrading, where Pd-based catalysts are widely used because of their high hydrogenation activities. However, poor selectivity and short catalyst lifetime because of heavy coke formation have been major concerns. In this work, atomically dispersed Pd atoms were successfully synthesized on graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) using atomic layer deposition. Aberration-corrected high-angle annular dark-field scanning transmission electron microscopy (HAADF-STEM) confirmed the dominant presence of isolated Pd atoms without Pd nanoparticle (NP) formation. During selective hydrogenation of acetylene in excess ethylene, the g-C3N4-supported Pd NP catalysts had strikingly higher ethylene selectivities than the conventional Pd/Al2O3 and Pd/SiO2 catalysts. In-situ X-ray photoemission spectroscopy revealed that the considerable charge transfer from the Pd NPs to g-C3N4 likely plays an important role in the catalytic performance enhancement. More impressively, the single-atom Pd1/C3N4 catalyst exhibited both higher ethylene selectivity and higher coking resistance. Our work demonstrates that the single-atom Pd catalyst is a promising candidate for improving both selectivity and coking-resistance in hydrogenation reactions.

Abstract:The product selectivity in catalytic hydrogenation of nitriles is strongly correlated with the structure of the catalyst. In this work, two types of atomically dispersed Pd species stabilized on the defect-rich nanodiamond-graphene (ND@G) hybrid support: single Pd atoms (Pd 1 /ND@G) and fully exposed Pd clusters with average three Pd atoms (Pd n /ND@G), were fabricated. The two catalysts show distinct difference in the catalytic transfer hydrogenation of nitriles. The Pd 1 /ND@G catalyst preferentially generates secondary amines (Turnover frequency (TOF@333 K 709 h −1 , selectivity >98%), while the Pd n /ND@G catalyst exhibits high selectivity towards primary amines (TOF@313 K 543 h −1 , selectivity >98%) under mild reaction conditions. Detailed characterizations and density functional theory (DFT) calculations show that the structure of atomically dispersed Pd catalysts governs the dissociative adsorption pattern of H 2 and also the hydrogenation pathway of the benzylideneimine (BI) intermediate, resulting in different product selectivity over Pd 1 /ND@G and Pd n /ND@G, respectively. The structure-performance relationship established over atomically dispersed Pd catalysts provides valuable insights for designing catalysts with tunable selectivity.
Aupd@Mesoporous Sio2: Synthesis and Selectivity in Catalytic Hydrogenation/Hydrodechlorination of P-Chloronitrobenzene

Abstract:AuPd nanoparticles (NPs) protected by tetradecyl trimethyl ammonium bromide (TTAB) were coated with SiO2 through hydrolysis of tetraethylorthosilicate (TEOS). The as-synthesized AuPd@SiO2 core-shell NPs were calcined in air at 500 degrees C to remove TTAB and open up mesopores within the SiO2 shells. The obtained Au-PdO@m-SiO2 NPs were reduced by H-2 at 300 degrees C to obtain AuPd@m-SiO2 NPs with AuPd NP cores (diameter: similar to 3 nm) and SiO2 shells (thickness: similar to 18 nm). Results from relevant characterization indicated that these SiO2-protected core-shell NPs were highly stable during calcination and subsequent reduction. Au@m-SiO2, Au10Pd@m-SiO2, Au5Pd@m-SiO2, AuPd5@m-SiO2, AuPd10@m-SiO2, and Pd@m-SiO2 NPs with similar core sizes and shell thicknesses were also synthesized. These samples were tested in the catalytic hydrogenation of p-chloronitrobenzene. The activity and selectivity were found to be tunable, depending on the composition of the bimetallic alloys. AuPd@m-SiO2 NPs with a 1/1 molar ratio of Au/Pd showed the highest selectivity for the hydrodechlorination of p-chloronitrobenzene.
Selective Hydrogenation of Acetylene over Pd-In/Al2O3 Catalyst: Promotional Effect of Indium and Composition-Dependent Performance

Abstract:Highly dispersed bimetallic Pd-In catalysts on Al2O3 were prepared by a simple impregnation method. In comparison with the unsupported intermetallic catalyst, the supported Pd-In catalyst exhibited several magnitudes higher activity and similar selectivity for selective acetylene hydrogenation. Moreover, the activity, selectivity, and anticoking performance of the Pd-In catalyst were superior to those of the monometallic Pd catalyst. The electron transferred from indium weakened the adsorption of ethylene on the negatively charged Pd sites and hence improved the selectivity of Pd-In/Al2O3. The inhibited formation of hydride due to the presence of indium also contributed to the higher selectivity. The promoted activation of hydrogen, owing to the weak adsorption of acetylene on Pd-In/Al2O3, and decreased particle size jointly contributed to the enhanced activity of Pd-In/Al2O3. In addition, green oil formation on Pd-In/Al2O3 was retarded by the presence of indium, contributing to the enhanced stability of the catalyst. The bimetallic Pd-In catalysts showed a strongly composition dependent performance, which resulted from the different extent of electronic and/or geometric modification of Pd active sites.
Increased Hydrogenation Rates in Pd/La-Al 2 O 3 Catalysts by Hydrogen Transfer O(-La) Sites Adjacent to Pd Nanoparticles

Abstract:In this study, a simple bottom-up synthesis is presented to introduce atomically dispersed La into Al2O3 followed by the addition of Pd to prepare a microspherical Pd/La-Al2O3 catalyst with potential for hydrogenation applications. The Pd/La-Al2O3 catalyst displays enhanced activity for a number of hydrogenation reactions and functional groups, for example, CO, CC, CN, and aromatic rings. Incorporation of O(-La) sites adjacent to Pd nanoparticles (NPs) is suggested to reversibly transfer and store catalytically active hydrogen at the O(-La) site. A kinetic analysis of 2-ethylanthraquinone (EAQ) hydrogenation shows that the H2 reaction order drops from one for Pd/Al2O3 to zero for Pd/La-Al2O3, while the EAQ order remains unchanged. Incorporation of isolated O(-La) sites adjacent to the Pd NPs provides a feasible strategy for the design of high-efficiency hydrogenation catalysts and has important implications for the development of the commercial hydrogenation process.

Abstract:Low-loading Pd supported on Fe2O3 nanoparticles was synthesized. A common nanocatalyst system with previously reported synergistic enhancement of reactivity that is attributed to the electronic interactions between Pd and the Fe2O3 support. Fe2O3-selective precoalescence overcoating with ZnO atomic layer deposition (ALD), using Zn(CH2CH3)2 and H2O as precursors, dampens competitive hydrogenation reactivity at Fe2O3-based sites. The result is enhanced efficiency at the low-loading but high reactivity Pd sites. While this increases catalyst efficiency toward most aqueous redox reactions tested, it suppresses reactivity toward polyaromatic core substrates. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy (UPS) show minimal electronic impacts for the ZnO overcoat on the Pd particles, implying a predominantly physical site blocking effect as the reason for the modified reactivity. This serves as a proof-of-concept of not only stabilizing supported nanocatalysts but also altering reactivity with ultrathin ALD overcoats. The results point to a facile ALD route for selective enhancement of reactivity for low-loading Pd-based supported nanocatalysts.

Abstract:The highly selective hydrogenation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural to 2,5-dihydroxymethylfuran is an important reaction in the field of biomass hydrogenation, because it is a bridge between biomass resources and chemical industry. Here, we precisely constructed carbon nitride supported Pd-based catalysts by a simple impregnation-reduction method. By changing the reduction temperature, catalysts with different oxidation state could be precisely constructed. Moreover, the important correlation between the ratio of Pd 0 /Pd 2+ and catalytic activity is revealed during the selective hydrogenation of HMF. The Pd/g-C 3 N 4 -300 catalyst with a Pd 0 /Pd 2+ ratio of 3/2 showed the highest catalytic activity, which could get 96.9% 5-hydroxymethylfurfural conversion and 90.3% 2,5-dihydroxymethylfuran selectivity. Further density functional theory calculation revealed that the synergistic effect between Pd 0 and Pd 2+ in Pd/g-C 3 N 4 -300 system could boost the adsorption of the substrate and the dissociation of hydrogen. In this work, we highlight the important correlation between metal oxidation state and catalytic activity, which provides valuable insights for the rational design of precious metal catalysts for hydrogenation reactions. Abstract:CO oxidative esterification is crucial in converting inorganic CO into organic oxygenated compounds within C1 chemistry and technology. However, understanding the structure-activity relationship underlying this reaction remains limited, primarily due to the entanglement of the Pd's geometric and electronic structures, which complicates selectivity control in practical applications. In this work, we design four Pd-based catalysts using the Al(111) motif to investigate their catalytic performance in CO oxidative esterification through density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Firstly, the larger lattice parameter of Al weakens horizontal Pd–Pd interactions while enhancing the vertical stability of Pd. Secondly, the electronic structure of Pd is locally regulated via charge transfer between subsurface and surface Pd, driven by their differences in work function. Our results indicate that the relative activity between CC coupling for dimethyl oxalate (DMO) and CO coupling for dimethyl carbonate (DMC) is primarily influenced by Pd's electronic effects, as revealed by energy barrier decomposition analysis. Thus, focusing on the regulation of Pd's electronic effects may offer a new strategy for controlling the selective oxidation esterification of CO.

Abstract:•Nano-Pd/Al2O3 was prepared for the selective hydrogenation of phenylacetylene (PA).•The Pd particle size was adjusted by varying amounts of reductant and stabilizer.•The selective hydrogenation of PA over nano-Pd/α-Al2O3 was structure-sensitive.•The specific activity increased with increasing Pd particle size from 3.8 to 12.1nm.•A maximum selectivity to styrene was obtained with a Pd particle size of 6.6nm.
