Abstract:This paper investigates the problem of belief update in Bayesian networks (BN) with uncertain evidence. Two types of uncertain evidences are identified: virtual evidence (reflecting the uncertainty one has about a reported observation) and soft evidence (reflecting the uncertainty of an event one observes). Each of the two types of evidence has its own characteristics and obeys a belief update rule that is different from hard evidence, and different from each other. The particular emphasis is on belief update with multiple uncertain evidences. Efficient algorithms for BN reasoning with consistent and inconsistent uncertain evidences are developed, and their convergences analyzed. These algorithms can be seen as combining the techniques of traditional BN reasoning, Pearl's virtual evidence method, Jeffrey's rule, and the iterative proportional fitting procedure.

Abstract:In fuzzy model, the consequent of fuzzy rule is often determined with degrees of belief or credibility because of vague information originating from evidence not strong enough and “lack of specificity” In this paper, we present a fuzzy model incorporated with fuzzy Dempster-Shafer Theory The consequent of fuzzy rule is not fuzzy propositions, but fuzzy Dempster-Shafer granules The salient aspect of the work is that a very simplified analytic output of fuzzy model which is a special case of Sugeno-type fuzzy model is achieved when all fuzzy sets in fuzzy partition of the output space have the same power (the area under the membership function), and the determination of basic probability assignments associated with fuzzy Dempster-Shafer belief structure using fuzzy Naive Bayes The construction method of fuzzy Naive Bayes and an learning strategy generating fuzzy rules from training data are proposed in this paper A well-known example about time series prediction is tested, the prediction results show that our fuzzy modeling is very efficient and has strong expressive power to represent the complex system with uncertain situation.

Abstract:The deterministic method of reliability analysis is difficult to descript the logic gates and events under fuzzy environments.This paper gives a method of reliability analysis based on Bayesian network that is capable of excellent representations and reasoning for fuzzy problem.Meanwhile a key conception named cut set with confidence is proposed and the algorithm for strong cut set is given.The method for reliability analysis based on Bayesian Network can describe the system fuzziness clearly and shows a good capability in modeling.At last,the validity of the algorithm is illustrated by an example.

Abstract:Z-number is an effective model to describe uncertainty in the real world. Under the condition that uncertainty reasoning is an important issue to process information, how to achieve Z-valuation uncertainty reasoning is a problem. As a Z-number involves both fuzzy and probabilistic uncertainty, main difficulty in the problem to be solved is accomplishing both two uncertainties' reasoning. In this paper, a novel Z-network model and its associated reasoning algorithm are proposed to overcome the difficulty. Structure of the proposed Z-network that contains three basic structures is directed acyclic graph, and this is similarly with Bayesian network (BN). Process of reasoning algorithm involves two parts: first, Bayesian reasoning is applied to establish an optimization model for probabilistic uncertainty reasoning in a Z-number; second, the arithmetic approach of discrete Z-number on if-then rule and maximum entropy approach are proposed for fuzzy uncertainty reasoning. Z-network is essentially an extended model on the basis of BN and properties of a Z-number for Z-valuation uncertainty reasoning. In application, a novel framework of dependence assessment in human reliability analysis is proposed based on Z-network, and a case study demonstrates its effectiveness.

Abstract:To overcome the constraint of Fuzzy Bayesian Network on description and reasoning for complex and uncertain time information of battle situation,the conception of Intuitionistic Fuzzy Bayesian Network,which uses the intuitionistic fuzzy property function to express the probability of the Bayesian Network nodes and the causal dependency of the variables,is proposed. And the node’s intuitionistic fuzzy transmissibility in Bayesian Network is proved. Meanwhile,the uncertain time reasoning based on IFTBN is advanced,promoting the accuracy of the Bayesian Network reasoning and enhancing the performance of shaping the proper battle sense in military situation assessment system. The typical example validates the presented approach’s efficiency and its preference.

Abstract:Dynamic Bayesian networks as a tool for intelligent reasoning problems show great vitality in dealing with uncertain reasoning,but there are some difficult to deal with the inference problem of continuous variables.This paper combines fuzzy theory and Dynamic Bayesian networks,puts forward a method of fuzzy classification to make the continuous variable into the evidence of Dynamic Bayesian networks,establishes the threaten grade assessment model of target and uses the directly reasoning algorithm for reasoning.Simulation results show that the classification method combining with Dynamic Bayesian network can well deal with the reasoning of the continuous variables.

Abstract:Bayesian network (BN) has been proven to be an excellent method that can describe relationships between different parameters and consequences to mitigate the likelihood of accidents. Nevertheless, the application of BN is limited due to the subjective probability and the static structure. In reality, available crisp probabilities for BN are generally insufficient, the system under consideration cannot be precisely described since the knowledge of the underlying phenomena is incomplete, which introduces data uncertainties. Furthermore, conventional BN have static structures, which results the model to have structure uncertainties. This paper presents a Dynamic BN-based risk analysis model to characterize the epistemic uncertainty and illustrates it through a case on the offshore kick failure. Linguistic variables are transformed into probabilities to represent data uncertainties by applying fuzzy sets and evidence theory. Structural uncertainties caused by conditional dependencies and static models were addressed by utilizing dynamic BN. Based on the model, a robust probability updating and dynamic risk analysis are conducted, through which critical events with potential risks of causing accidents are identified and a dynamic risk profile is obtained. The case study indicates that it is a comprehensive approach for quantitative risk analysis in offshore industries under uncertainties.

Abstract:Dealing with uncertainty is crucial in ontology engineering tasks such as domain modeling, ontology reasoning, and concept mapping between ontologies. This paper presents our on-going research on modeling uncertainty in ontologies based on Bayesian networks (BN). This includes 1) extending OWL to allow additional probabilistic markups for attaching probability information, 2) directly converting a probabilistic ally annotated OWL ontology into a BN structure by a set of structural translation rules, and 3) constructing the conditio nal probability tables (CPTs) of this BN using a new method based on iterative proportiobal fitting procedure (IPFP). The translat ed BN can support more accurate ontology reasoning under uncertainty as Bayesian inferences.

Abstract:In order to evaluate complex behaviors and interactions between their components of dynamic systems, a new method for modeling and analysing dynamic systems reliability based on BN was presented. By using the advantages of uncertainty reasoning and figurative expression of Bayesian network, system components' behaviors and interactions were captured well-defined. Combining, in a structured way, the various 'basic' Bayesian network constructs enables the user to construct, in a modular and hierarchical fashion, the system model. Experiment results show that the method is feasible and valid. Sensitivity is improved, and uncertainty is lessened.

Abstract:As a dominant method in evidential reasoning, Bayesian network has been proved powerful in discrete fields. Although Bayesian network performs reliable in continuous variables and interval estimations, it relies on discretizing continuous variables or building an approximate model to conduct, which causes information loss and accuracy reduction. In order to bridge this gap, this paper introduces two inference rules combined with four inference rules proposed by other scholars. Then we propose a concept of uncertain inference network that consists of six basic structures matching inference rules to represent relationships and logic connection among the evidence. Evidence is represented by uncertain sets that can apply to continuous variables using membership functions to represent vague concepts. Furthermore, a numeric experiment for a forensic investigation of fire incidents is given to compare the results of uncertain inference network and Bayesian network. We found three merits in the case study. First, an uncertain inference network has simpler data access for each node because Bayesian network depends on conditional probability tables while uncertain inference network only relies on membership function. Second, an uncertain inference network has a more wide application because it can perform continuous variables with certain mathematical formulas without discretizing or approximating. Third, an uncertain inference network has a more accurate result because Bayesian network gives a point estimation with a 0–1 value while uncertain inference network conducts an interval estimation with a range value.

Abstract:Nowadays, credit is becoming more and more important and the progress of artificial intelligence technology brings new opportunities for the development of credit investigation. In this paper, we come up with a novel reasoning model for a credit investigation system based on the fuzzy Bayesian network which is a new convergence of technology and finance. In the model, combined with data learning and expert knowledge systems, a new knowledge representation method is proposed according to fuzzy theory and transfer rule of node value is defined. The problem that continuous value cannot be used in the traditional Bayesian network is well solved and the reasoning process is more suitable for credit characteristics. The most important innovations of our model are a new conditional probability function and two data fusion algorithms, which make fuzzy numbers well transmit and merge. What’s more, the approach makes full use of the advantages of big data and its rationality and stability are verified. In practice, the proposed model has significant meaning for the development of investigation systems and it can provide reference value for the intelligence of other financial fields.

Abstract:Traditional fuzzy reasoning methods have two problems 1) the operators appearing in the fuzzy reasoning methods are fixed; 2) how to select the operations for the reasoning methods. In order to solve the problems, we propose the updating fuzzy reasoning method based on universal logic in this paper. The reasoning rules based on universal logic of five fuzzy reasoning models (i.e. GMP, GMT, multi-dimensional model, multiple model and multi-dimensional and multiple model) are given. We also give the properties of the reasoning rule based on universal logic of GMP model.

Abstract:The "take-them-in-or-leave-them-out" of prior probabilities is a key problem in uncertain reasonings. The EMYCIN uncertain reasoning model is inconsistent with probability theory, due to 'leaving them out', while the PROSPECTOR uncertain reasoning model is substantially consistent with probability theory, due to 'taking them in'. This presents a difficult task for human experts when supplying prior probabilities. In this paper, in order to overcome the difficulty, we propose a hybrid uncertain reasoning model, by combing rule strengths in the PROSPECTOR model with rule strengths in the EMYCIN model. Moreover, different forms of rule strength will enable human experts to supply values for the rule strengths more flexibly in a knowledge base. Finally, an example is given to illustrate the power of our methodology.

Abstract:Bayesian Network (BN) is an efficient model tool for approximate reasoning based on machine learning. It has been widely used for supporting the decision in many engineering applications such as geotechnical engineering. However, the current studies on BN are mostly on uncertainty quantification and decision-making, while the sensitivity analysis on BN, which may provide much more insights for decision-making, has not received much attention. The current research on sensitivity analysis of BN mainly focuses on local method, and there is a need to develop global sensitivity analysis (GSA) for both forward and backward inferences of BN. We present in this paper GSA analysis for BN within two different settings. For the first setting, it is assumed that the BN nodes, as well as their connection are characterized by precise (conditional) probabilities, and we introduce GSA for both forward and backward analysis. It is shown that, by forward analysis, the GSA indices can effectively identify the nodes which make the most contribution to the end nodes directly related to the reliability; by backward analysis, the GSA indices can inform the most important information needs to be collected for BN model updating. The second setting concerns the incomplete knowledge of nodes and their connections, and it is assumed these quantities are characterized by imprecise probability models. In this setting, the GSA is then introduced, and implemented with the newly developed non-intrusive imprecise stochastic simulation (NISS) method, for learning the most important epistemic uncertainty sources, by reducing which the robustness of the BN inference can be enhanced the most. The above theoretical developments are then applied to an infinite slope reliability analysis problem.

Abstract:Cloud model can establish transformation of uncertainty between the qualitative concept and the quantitative description.The rule generator constructed by cloud model can effectively describe qualitative rules expressing by natural language.On the basis of the single condition single rule generator,the double condition single rule generator algorithm is further proposed,and finally the architecture of cloud reasoning system is given.Based on cloud model,the uncertain reasoning approach is used to design the electrical machine running speed controlling system,and compared with fuzzy reasoning method,which demonstrates the validity and practicability of the cloud method.

Abstract:Uncertainty is a major barrier in knowledge discovery from complex problem domains.Knowledge discovery in such domains requires qualitative rather than quantitative analysis.Therefore, the quantitative measures can be used to represent uncertainty with the integration of various models.The Bayesian Network (BN) is a widely applied technique for characterization and analysis of uncertainty in real world domains.Thus, the real application of BN can be observed in a broad range of domains such as image processing, decision making, system reliability estimation and PPDM (Privacy Preserving in Data Mining) in association rule mining and medical domain analysis.BN techniques can be used in these domains for prediction and decision support.In this article, a discussion on general BN representation, draw inferences, learning and prediction is followed by applications of BN in some specific domains.Domain specific BN representation, inferences and learning process are also presented.Building upon the knowledge presented, some future research directions are also highlighted.

Abstract:Bayesian network (BN) inference is an important statistical tool with additive symmetry. However, BN inference cannot deal with the uncertain, fuzzy, random, and conflicting information from experts' knowledge in the process of conducting a risk assessment. To tackle this issue, a new fuzzy BN inference approach for risk assessments was proposed based on cloud model (CM), interval type-2 fuzzy set (IT2 FS), interval type-2 fuzzy logic system (IT2 FLS), modified Dempster–Shafer (D-S) evidence theory (ET), and Latin hypercube sampling (LHS) methods along the following lines. Firstly, CM was integrated into IT2 FS, and CM-based IT2 FS (CM-IT2 FS) was defined in the IT2 FLS. Secondly, modified D-S ET was utilized to determine the CM-IT2 FS-based a priori probabilities, and the CM-IT2 FS-based BN model was established. Thirdly, the CM-IT2 FS-based a priori probabilities were reduced to the CM-IT1 FS-based ones using a type reducer in the IT2 FLS, LHS was applied to propose a new fuzzy BN inference algorithm, and then, the new algorithm was used in a typical case to perform the fuzzy BN positive inference for risk prediction and the fuzzy BN reverse inference for risk sensitivity analysis. Finally, the BN inference results were analyzed using the proposed algorithm and the two common BN inference algorithms, and the effectiveness of the proposed approach was validated. It can be concluded that the proposed approach was both accurate and promising.
