Abstract:Autotoxicity has a significant impact on crop yield and quality. To explore the effects of allelochemicals on the growth of hydroponic lettuce, 100 μM of the simulated autotoxins benzoic acid (BA), salicylic acid (SA), ferulic acid (FA), gallic acid (GA) and tannic acid (TA) were added to a nutrient solution in order to investigate their effects on lettuce yield, morphology, reactive oxygen species (ROS) and antioxidant systems under red and blue light. All five of these treatments resulted in significant effects on the lettuce. TA significantly increased the O2*-, H2O2, malondialdehyde (MDA) and total phenolic content, decreased the activity of superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT) and peroxidase (POD), and reduced the growth and yield of lettuce. FA and GA did not lead to ROS over-accumulation, and the levels of antioxidant enzymes maintained a high level, so the lettuce yield decreased slightly. These results strongly suggest that allelochemicals can inhibit lettuce growth by disturbing the metabolic balance of ROS, with tannic acid having the strongest allelopathic effect.
