Abstract:Recent years have witnessed an increasing proliferation of biomass technologies since it is recognized as a natural carbon-neutral fuel. While the existing literature has focused on the modeling and planning for biomass, it remains a public interest regarding the role and merit of biomass technologies in future smart grid paradigm. Therefore, we propose an optimal planning framework to determine the sizing of biomass-to-gas (biogas) toward 100%-renewable regional energy system. The proposed planning model aims to minimize the annualized investment and operation costs of various forms of distributed energy resources (DERs) with respect to their physical constraints and a self-sufficiency requirement. In this paper, the production performance of biogas is captured by a detailed model considering the characteristics of anaerobic digestion under different temperature conditions. Due to its essential nonlinearity, a piecewise linearization (PWL) method is adopted to reformulate the nonlinear model into a mixed-integer linear programming (MILP), which can be readily optimized by off-the-shelf solvers. Case studies based on realistic datasets demonstrate that the planning strategy can be effectively improved by taking advantage of biogas toward fully renewable-powered distribution grids. In contrast to the case W/O biogas, about 27% of the total costs can be reduced when incorporating biogas.
