Abstract:A high-sensitivity optical sensor based on a Fabry-Perot interferometer (FPI) has been demonstrated. The cavity of the FPI is formed by two parallel half-reflective film-coated glass substrates with a distance of 1 mm and works as the sensing area. The interaction between the propagating wave and the analyte gives the sensing signal. High sensitivity of 1149 nm/RIU has been achieved for the wavelength interrogation. The Fabry-Perot sensor can be made into a large array with multiple microfluidic channels to detect the different types of analytes. It has great potential in biochemical sensing. Abstract:An open-cavity fiber-optic Fabry-Perot interferometer (FPI) is designed and demonstrated, with a particular consideration for microfluidic refractive index (RI) sensing. The FPI is composed of an etched side-hole fiber (SHF) sandwiched between two single-mode-fibers. Chemical etching method is used to open up the cavity in the SHF. Experimental results show that an optimal RI sensitivity of more than 1250 nm/RI can be achieved with an open-cavity length of 38 μm for the microfluidic RI range from 1.3400 to 1.3470. In addition, the temperature sensitivity can reach an ultralow level of 1.1 pm/°C. The ease of fabrication, capability for in situ measurement, and excellent performance results suggest that the proposed FPI is highly promising as an inline refractometer for temperature-insensitive label-free microfluidic detection and sensing.
In-line fiber optic optofluidic sensor based on a fully open Fabry-Perot interferometer

Abstract:We present an all-fiber, fully open Fabry-Perot interferometer (FPI) cavity that is suitable for fluidic measurement applications. Fabrication of the FPI involves the alignment and bonding of three optical fiber sections using either ceramic glue or low-temperature melting glass. The fabrication procedure allows the protection of the cleaved optical fiber end faces, which serve as the two mirrors of the FPI, from damage, thus ensuring the high visibility of the FPI sensor. The FPI's complete openness permits the analyte of interest fluids to flow smoothly into the cavity and interact directly with the light, obviating the need for additional assistance. The fabrication experiment demonstrates that the fabrication procedure can readily achieve a visibility of over 20 dB. Refractive index testing indicates that the sensor exhibits a sensitivity of over 1116 nm/RIU within the range of 1.334-1.375. A comparison of temperature investigations indicates that the fully open cavity FPI fabricated by bonding with low-temperature melting glass exhibits relatively lower temperature immunity than that bonded with ceramic glue. Both have a relatively low temperature fluctuation within the temperature range of 40°C-100°C, with less than 3 nm and 4.5 nm in the over 60°C changes, respectively. Our proposed fully open FPI is an economical, robust, and simple-to-fabricate structure with the potential for mass production. This renders it an appealing option for practical optofluidics applications.

An Open-Cavity Fabry-Perot Interferometer with PVA Coating for Simultaneous Measurement of Relative Humidity and Temperature

Abstract:A fiber-optic open-cavity Fabry-Perot (FP) interferometer (FPI) with polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) coating is proposed and experimentally demonstrated for simultaneous measurement of relative humidity (RH) and temperature. The FPI consists of an etched side-hole fiber (SHF) sandwiched in between two leading single-mode-fibers. The PVA film is plated on the fiber surface functioning as a humidity-to-refractive index (RI) transducer. Theoretical analysis details the RH and temperature influence on the spectral fringes of the FPI. Experimental results confirms and show that, the reflection loss of the FPI nonlinearly decreases more than 15dB when the RH increases from 30%RH to 90%RH with a highest sensitivity of −1.2dB/%RH, while the dip wavelength of the spectral fringe exhibits linear RH and temperature sensitivities of −23.1pm/%RH and −6.14pm/°C, respectively. Thus, by monitoring the reflection and wavelength of the interference dip, the proposed sensor enables accurate simultaneous measurement of RH and temperature. A fast and reversible time response has also been demonstrated. Such excellent sensing performance with compactness, ease of fabrication makes our sensing structure a highly promising candidate for RH and temperature monitoring applications.

Abstract:Developing new Fabry–Perot interferometer (FPI) with high sensitivity has always been a focus in the field of optical fiber sensing. This work proposed and experimentally demonstrated a novel hybrid-structured FPI based on harmonic Vernier effect and traditional Vernier effect, utilizing a polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) microcavity. The reference FPI is formed by the hollow core fiber, which is insensitive to temperature and gas pressure change. The sensing element is formed by two parts including a short single-mode fiber (SMF) and a PDMS microcavity. Due to the similar refractive index between the SMF and PDMS microcavity, there is very weak reflection at the interface. Only reflection at the interface between the PDMS microcavity and the air is observed. Additionally, five hybrid FPIs consisting of PDMS microcavity were fabricated and applied for temperature and gas pressure measurement, which exhibited high temperature and gas pressure sensitivities with maximal values of 5.49 nm/°C, and 22.97 nm/MPa, respectively.

Abstract:A polymer microbubble-based Fabry-Perot fiber interferometer (FPI) for pressure and temperature measurement is proposed and demonstrated. By splicing a small segment of photonic bandgap fiber to a single-mode fiber and immersing such a fiber tip into an optical adhesive, a micro air bubble could be buried into the formed polymer diaphragm. Size of air bubble and polymer diaphragm thickness can be controlled by adjusting arc discharge intensity at the fiber splice point. In order to achieve the wide dynamic range and high-resolution measurement, a demodulation algorithm based on absolute phase analysis is adopted and present high sensitivity for simultaneous pressure and temperature sensing. This simple and reproducible fabrication method of such a sensor gives an alternative way to construct FPI-based biomedical and microfluidic sensors.

Abstract:We have proposed an ultra-compact double polymer-capped Fabry-Perot interferometer (FPI), which could be used for simultaneously measuring refractive index (RI) and temperature with low cross sensitivity. The designed and fabricated FPIs have double polymer layers which were fabricated by step-curing ultraviolet photoresist (SU-8) and polydimethylsiloxane on the end face of a traditional single-mode fibre. Three samples were fabricated with different Fabry-Perot cavity lengths. Experimental results show that the double polymer structure has higher temperature and RI sensitivities than single-layer structure. About 689.68pm/degrees C (based on the wavelength shift) in the temperature range of 20-75 degrees C and -147.04dB/RIU (based on peak intensity measurement) in the RI range of 1.335-1.355 were measured, respectively. Moreover, the compact structure, high temperature sensitivity and low cross-sensitivity of the FPI make it suitable for integration such as biomedical and microfluidic sensor probe.

Abstract:An optical fiber Fabry-Perot interferometer (FPI) based on an air cavity with a microchannel is proposed and demonstrated for gas pressure measurement. The inner air cavity is fabricated by fusion splicing a single-mode fiber (SMF) with a microhole at the end facet to another section of SMF, then creating a microchannel to vertically cross the air cavity to allow gas to flow in. As the air cavity is cascaded to a short section of SMF, a three-beam interference pattern is produced, which shifts with the gas pressure variation in the inner air cavity due to the refractive index change of the gas. In order to compensate the temperature effect, the multiple-dip tracing technique and the Fourier band pass filtering (FBPF) method are used simultaneously for gas pressure and temperature measurement. It is also found that by using the FBPF method, the gas pressure sensitivity does not depend on the resonant peaks/dips selected in the filtered spectrum of the device. The proposed device has a robust tip structure, miniature size, and high sensitivity (similar to 4.028 nm/MPa) and is easy to fabricate, which makes it attractive for highly sensitive and precise gas pressure measurement.

Abstract:A novel high sensitivity all-fiber Fabry-Perot interferometer (FPI) gas refractive index (RI) sensor based on hole-assisted one-core fiber (HAOCF) and Vernier effect was proposed and demonstrated. The sensor is fabricated by splicing a section of HAOCF to a section of silica tube (ST) fused with the lead-in single-mode fiber (SMF), ensuring that the sensor is composed of an air-cavity FPI and a silica-cavity FPI. The cascaded dual-cavities generate the Vernier effect due to a similar free spectrum range (FSR), which significantly improve the sensitivity of the sensor. Owing to the air hole in the cladding of the HAOCF, gases with different RI can enter or leave the in-fiber air cavity, which makes the device usable as a gas RI sensor. The sensor was used to monitor the RI changes of air with different pressures and provided a high sensitivity of −9462.4 nm/RIU. The proposed sensor has a potential to find further applications in the fields of gas composition detection, medical diagnostics and environmental monitoring.

Abstract:A novel hybrid-cavity Fabry-Perot interferometer (HFPI) is theoretically proposed and experimentally demonstrated. The hybrid micro-cavity structure is consisted of a short segment of four-hole suspended-core fiber (SCF) and attaching moderate optical adhesive as the hygroscopic material. Due to the different sensitivities of the hybrid Fabry-Perot (F-P) cavities to the relative humidity (RH) and temperature, both information can be simultaneously demodulated by utilizing the phase-shift tracking scheme in the Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) spectra. The precise micromanipulation of each cavity length ensures the separation of each amplitude peak in the FFT spectra, which renders this HFPI multi-point sensing capability. Experimental tests were carried out, and the results indicate that the proposed HFPI with excellent sensing performance is a promising platform for multi-point RH and temperature sensing applications. Abstract:This study explores the development of an innovative Fabry-Perot Interferometer (FPI) designed for temperature sensing and environmental monitoring. The device is constructed by embedding optical fibers within a 3D-printed resin scaffold, forming a structure with an open Fabry-Perot cavity. Intended as an integral component of Cyber-Physical-Social Systems (CPSS), this FPI structure aims to enhance the system's capacity to sense changes in external environmental conditions. Within the CPSS context, the FPI offers several advantages, including simple manufacturing processes, low production costs, and high sensitivity. These benefits contribute to providing precise environmental feedback to the system, which is essential in implementing effective security and privacy protection strategies. Experimental evaluations have shown that the FPI exhibits a high linear sensitivity of 14.330 nm/°C within a temperature range of 34.9°C–38.5°C, confirming its potential for application in CPSS for temperature monitoring and environmental sensing.

Abstract:A compact and high sensitivity sensor with a fiber-tip structure is proposed and demonstrated for simultaneously liquid refractive index (RI) and temperature sensing. The device is fabricated by inserting a tiny segment of capillary tube between single-mode fibers (SMFs) to form two cascaded Fabry-Perot interferometers (FPIs). The theoretical and experimental results demonstrate that the ambient liquid RI and temperature can be simultaneously determined by the intensity and shift of the resonant wavelength in the reflection spectrum. Our proposed device has the highest RI sensitivity of ~216.37 dB/RIU at the RI value of 1.30; a high spatial resolution owing to its compact size (with dimension <400 μm) makes it promising for high precision bio/chemical sensing applications.

Abstract:In this article, a tellurite fiber (TF) was fabricated into a microsphere structure via discharge and sequentially coupled with a multimode fiber and a single-mode fiber (SMF) to form a Fabry-Perot interferometer (FPI) sensor. Changes in temperature and hydraulic pressure cause the microsphere to deform, altering the interference length of reflected lights and establishing their dependency relationship. Experimental results showed that the proposed FPI sensor had temperature sensitivity of 157 pm/°C and hydraulic pressure sensitivity of 11.4 pm/MPa. In addition, repetitive experiments and stability tests were conducted, and the maximum relative standard deviation (RSD) was calculated to be for temperature and for hydra- ulic pressure. This FPI sensor is characterized by small size, compact structure, high sensitivity, long-term accuracy, and good stability and repeatability. All these features render it suitable for real-time temperature and hydraulic pressure monitoring in complex environments. In addition, the tellurite compositions can be adjusted to help adapt the FPI sensor to specific external environmental conditions, which provides valuable theoretical and technical insights for the development of high-performance sensing devices.

Abstract:An opto-microfluidic static pressure sensor based on a fiber Fabry-Perot Interferometer (FPI) with extended air cavity for enhancing the measuring sensitivity is proposed. The FPI is constructed in a microfluidic channel by the combination of the fixed fiber-end reflection and floating liquid surface reflection faces. A change of the aquatic pressure will cause a drift of the liquid surface and the pressure can be measured by detecting the shift of the FPI spectrum. Sensitivity of the sensor structure can be enhanced significantly by extending the air region of the FPI. The structure is manufactured by using a common single-mode optical fiber, and a silica capillary with the inner wall coated with a hydrophobic film. A sample with 3500 μm air cavity length has demonstrated the pressure sensitivity of about 32.4 μm/kPa, and the temperature cross-sensitivity of about 0.33 kPa/K.

Abstract:In this work, we propose a novel sensor based on two parallel Fabry-Pérot interferometers (FPIs) and the Vernier effect, achieving temperature and pressure sensing. Both FPIs utilize the end face of a single-mode fiber as the reflective surface. FPI 1 is composed of a single-mode fiber and a thin-core fiber fusion spliced together, with the cavity filled with polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS); FPI 2 is made of two segments of single-mode fiber with the cavity filled with ultraviolet (UV) glue. Within the temperature range of 28–40 °C, the temperature sensitivities of FPI 1 and FPI 2 are −0.40 nm/°C and 0.49 nm/°C, respectively, indicating that the reflection spectra of the two sensors shift in opposite directions as the temperature increases. When the two sensors are connected using a 3 dB coupler and both are employed for temperature sensing, enhanced Vernier effect is achieved, resulting in a sensitivity of −3.38 nm/°C. This represents an 8.45-fold and 6.89-fold increase in sensitivity compared to FPI 1 and FPI 2 , respectively. Additionally, FPI 2 exhibits sensitivity to pressure; in the range of 0.1–0.7 MPa, the sensitivity of FPI 2 reaches 2.73 nm/MPa. When using FPI 1 as a reference device and FPI 2 as a sensing device, the sensitivity within the same range reaches 20.91 nm/MPa, a 7.65-fold increase compared to FPI 2 alone.

Abstract:All-optical-fiber Fabry-Perot interferometers (FPIs) with microcavities of different shapes were investigated. It was found that the size and shape of the cavity plays an important role on the performance of these interferometers. To corroborate the analysis, FPIs with spheroidal cavities were fabricated by splicing a photonic crystal fiber (PCF) with large voids and a conventional single mode fiber (SMF), using an ad hoc splicing program. It was found that the strain sensitivity of FPIs with spheroidal cavities can be controlled through the dimensions of the spheroid. For example, a FPI whose cavity had a size of ~10x60 μm exhibited strain sensitivity of ~10.3 pm/με and fringe contrast of ~38 dB. Such strain sensitivity is ~10 times larger than that of the popular fiber Bragg gratings (~1.2 pm/με) and higher than that of most low-finesse FPIs. The thermal sensitivity of our FPIs is extremely low (~1pm/°C) due to the air cavities. Thus, a number of temperature-independent ultra-sensitive microscopic sensors can be devised with the interferometers here proposed since many parameters can be converted to strain. To this end, simple vibration sensors are demonstrated.

Abstract:We report on multiplexing several Fabry-Pérot (FP) cavities in single-mode optical fibers for highprecision spatially resolved sensing of refractive indices (RI) of liquids. Resonators are fabricated by cutting small slots into fibers using a diamond-blade dicing saw and additional coating with thin Ta 2 O 5 layers to increase cavity reflectance. Temperature compensation of RI measurements is achieved either by evaluating the reflection signals resulting from the solid core parts between different open-cavity sensor elements, or by using a thin Si inlay glued into one of the open cavities. The multiplexing performance and accuracy of the fabricated sensors with up to four open cavities were tested on sucrose solutions over a range of temperatures.
Hot-wire Sandwiched Fabry-Perot Interferometer for Microfluidic Flow Rate Sensing

Abstract:We present a Fabry-Perot interferometer for microfluidic flow rate sensing. The FPI was composed by a pair of fiber Bragg grating reflectors and a micro Co2+-doped optical fiber cavity, acting as a "hot-wire" sensor. A microfluidic channel made from commercial silica capillary was integrated with the FPIs on a chip to realize flow-rate sensing system. By utilizing a tunable pump laser with wavelength of 1480 nm, the proposed flowmeter was experimentally demonstrated. The flow rate of the liquid sample is determined by the induced resonance wavelength shift of the FPI. The effect of the pump power on the performance of our flowmeter was investigated. The dynamic response was also measured under different flow-rate conditions. The experimental results achieve a sensitivity of 70 pm/(mu L/s), a dynamic range up to 1.1 mu L/s and response time in the level of seconds. Such good performance renders the sensor a promising supplementary component in microfluidic biochemical sensing system.

Abstract:A fiber-optic Fabry-Perot interferometer was constructed by splicing a short length of photonic crystal fiber to a standard single-mode fiber. The photonic crystal fiber functions as a Fabry-Perot cavity and serves as a direct sensing probe without any additional components. Its pressure and temperature responses in the range of 0-40 MPa and 25°C-700°C were experimentally studied. The proposed sensor is easy to fabricate, potentially low-cost, and compact in size, which makes it very attractive for high-pressure and high-temperature sensing applications.
