Abstract:The control of the emission properties of synthetic organic molecules through molecular design has led to the development of high-performance optoelectronic devices with tunable emission colours, high quantum efficiencies and efficient energy/charge transfer processes. However, the task of generating excited states with long lifetimes has been met with limited success, owing to the ultrafast deactivation of the highly active excited states. Here, we present a design rule that can be used to tune the emission lifetime of a wide range of luminescent organic molecules, based on effective stabilization of triplet excited states through strong coupling in H-aggregated molecules. Our experimental data revealed that luminescence lifetimes up to 1.35 s, which are several orders of magnitude longer than those of conventional organic fluorophores, can be realized under ambient conditions. These results outline a fundamental principle to design organic molecules with extended lifetimes of excited states, providing a major step forward in expanding the scope of organic phosphorescence applications.

Abstract:AbstractPure organic materials with intrinsic room‐temperature phosphorescence typically rely on heavy atoms or heteroatoms. Two different strategies towards constructing organic room‐temperature phosphorescence (RTP) species based upon the through‐space charge transfer (TSCT) unit of [2.2]paracyclophane (PCP) were demonstrated. Materials with bromine atoms, PCP‐BrCz and PPCP‐BrCz, exhibit RTP lifetime of around 100 ms. Modulating the PCP core with non‐halogen‐containing electron‐withdrawing units, PCP‐TNTCz and PCP‐PyCNCz, successfully elongate the RTP lifetime to 313.59 and 528.00 ms, respectively, the afterglow of which is visible for several seconds under ambient conditions. The PCP‐TNTCz and PCP‐PyCNCz enantiomers display excellent circular polarized luminescence with dissymmetry factors as high as −1.2×10−2 in toluene solutions, and decent RTP lifetime of around 300 ms for PCP‐TNTCz enantiomers in crystalline state.

Abstract:Manipulation of the emission properties of pure organic room-temperature phosphors through molecular design is attractive but challenging. Tremendous efforts have been made to modulate their aggregation behaviors to suppress nonradiative decay in order to achieve efficient light emission and long lifetimes. However, success has been limited. To attain such a goal, here we present a rational design principle based on intrinsic molecular-structure engineering. Comprehensive investigations on the molecular orbitals revealed that an excited state with hybrid (n,π*) and (π,π*) configurations in appreciable proportion is desired. Tailoring the aromatic subunits in arylphenones can effectively tune the energy level and the orbital feature of the triplet exciton. Our experimental data reveal that a series of full-color pure organic phosphors with a balanced lifetime (up to 0.23 s) and efficiency (up to 36.0%) can be realized under ambient conditions, demonstrating the validity of our instructive design principle.

Abstract:In this work, we used density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) methods to study the mechanism of pure organic room temperature phosphorescence emission. The effects on the electronic structure and photochemical properties of thiophene and diketone derivatives with different cyclic and oxidized structures. The result suggests that varying ring configurations and oxidation products significantly influence the photochemical characteristics of thiophene and diketone derivatives. The complex experiences conformational distortion along with the oxidation product, which causes notable alterations in the energy gap and charge density of its frontier molecular orbitals. An oxidation process significantly distorts the molecular structure of the compound, leading to excited singlet and excited triplet states structural similarities. With energy gaps dropping from 0.22 eV to 0.05 eV and spin–orbit coupling constants rising from 0.42 cm −1 to 57.48 cm −1 , the excited singlet and excited triplet states share structures and charge distributions that increase the energy level channels appropriate for intersystem crossing. Therefore, this work can provide theoretical support for the design and structural optimization of highly efficient pure organic phosphorescent materials.

Abstract:Solution-processed organic-inorganic hybrid perovskites are promising emitters for next-generation optoelectronic devices. Multiple-colored, bright light emission is achieved by tuning their composition and structures. However, there is very little research on exploring optically active organic cations for hybrid perovskites. Here, unique room-temperature phosphorescence from hybrid perovskites is reported by employing novel organic cations. Efficient room-temperature phosphorescence is activated by designing a mixed-cation perovskite system to suppress nonradiative recombination. Multiple-colored phosphorescence is achieved by molecular design. Moreover, the emission lifetime can be tuned by varying the perovskite composition to achieve persistent luminescence. Efficient room-temperature phosphorescence is demonstrated in hybrid perovskites that originates from the triplet states of the organic cations, opening a new dimension to the further development of perovskite emitters with novel functional organic cations for versatile display applications.

Abstract:Two novel heavy atom-free pure organic pyrimidine-based asymmetric donor-acceptor type emitters were designed and synthesized. The twisted D-A conformation was favored to produce small ΔEst and effective ISC. Excitingly, PMBT and CzPMBT showed precious fluorescence-RTP-TADF triple emission. Furthermore, PMBT responded to external stimuli of volatile solvents fumigation and different intensity grinding to generate a multicolor switching system, which included charming white light due to the dual emission of fluorescence and phosphorescence. Crystallographic analysis was conducted to explain the reasons for the differences in photophysical properties produced by the two compounds. This research provides insight into the mechanism of action of RTP, TADF and multicolor MCL through intermolecular interactions and conformational modulation.

Abstract:Polymer-based pure organic room-temperature phosphorescent materials have tremendous advantages in applications owing to their low cost, vast resources, and easy processability. However, designing polymer-based room-temperature phosphorescent materials with large Stokes shifts as key requirements in biocompatibility and environmental-friendly performance is still challenging. By generating charge transfer states as the gangplank from singlet excited states to triplet states in doped organic molecules, we find a host molecule (pyrrolidone) that affords charge transfer with doped guest molecules, and excellent polymer-based organic room-temperature phosphorescent materials can be easily fabricated when polymerizing the host molecule. By adding polyaromatic hydrocarbon molecules as electron-donor in polyvinylpyrrolidone, efficient intersystem crossing and tunable phosphorescent from green to near-infrared can be achieved, with maximum phosphorescence wavelength and lifetime up to 757 nm and 3850 ms, respectively. These doped polyvinylpyrrolidone materials have good photoactivation properties, recyclability, advanced data encryption, and anti-counterfeiting. This reported design strategy paves the way for the design of polyvinylpyrrolidone-based room-temperature phosphorescent materials.

Abstract:Research on materials with pure organic room temperature phosphorescence (RTP) and their application as organic single-molecule white light emitters is a hot area and relies on the design of highly efficient pure organic RTP luminogens. Herein, a facile strategy of heavy-atom-participated anion-π+ interactions is proposed to construct RTP-active organic salt compounds (1,2,3,4-tetraphenyloxazoliums with different counterions). Those compounds with heavy-atom counterions (bromide and iodide ions) exhibit outstanding RTP due to the external heavy atom effect via anion-π+ interactions, evidently supported by the single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis and theoretical calculation. Their single-molecule white light emission is realized by tuning the degree of crystallization. Such white light emission also performs well in polymer matrices and their use in 3D printing is demonstrated by white light lampshades.

Abstract:A simple bromine and cyanogen substituents positional isomeric 9-phenyl-9H-carbazole (PhCz) donor–acceptor system (namely p-NN-Br and m-NN-Br) displays ultralong organic phosphorescence, and exhibits unique dual emission properties (fluorescence and phosphorescence). These molecules are found to display distinct responses toward multiple external stimuli including temperature (T), excitation light intensity (I) and pressure (P), and show multicolor tunable behaviors (including the white light, the Commission Internationale d'Eclairage (CIE) = 0.33, 0.34). The unique stimuli-triggered proportion between singlet and triplet excitons for p-NN-Br and m-NN-Br is demonstrated systematically by investigating the photophysical spectrum, scanning electron microscope (SEM) imaging and X-ray analysis, coupled with theoretical calculations. They reveal that the simultaneous introduction of halogens (Br) and pseudohalogens (CN) to the PhCz skeleton can improve the intermolecular interaction and thermal stability. Single crystal analysis shows that there are many more types of dimers and J-aggregates, thereby stabilizing the excitation of triplet states. Moreover, these isomers have "latent" fingerprint recognition and anti-background interference performance, which is expected to provide a new method for fingerprint identification. All in all, this strategy paves the way to a multifunctional platform for the development of multi-stimuli responsive, multicolor regulation and smart luminescent materials with long-lived emission at room temperature.

Abstract:The development of organic-inorganic hybrid materials with long-lived room temperature phosphorescence (RTP) has been paid tremendous attention owing to their promising applications in the optoelectronic and anti-counterfeiting field. In this work, by the selection of lead halide and electron-poor heteroaromatic molecule 1,10-phenanthroline (phen), one coordination polymer [Pb(phen)Cl2] has been synthesized under hydrothermal conditions. This complex exhibits alternating arrangement of long-range order of phen π-conjugated systems and lead halide inorganic chains as revealed by X-ray single-crystal structural analysis. This structure character and special chemical components endows this hybrid material rare example of red room temperature phosphorescence. Its electronic structure and electronic transition behavior were further conducted by theoretical calculations. Meanwhile, film of the complex features remarkable angle-dependent polarized emission and photoelectric performance.

Abstract:Organic luminogens with persistent room temperature phosphorescence (RTP) have attracted great attention for their wide applications in optoelectronic devices and bioimaging. However, these materials are still very scarce, partially due to the unclear mechanism and lack of designing guidelines. Herein we develop seven 10-phenyl-10H-phenothiazine-5,5-dioxide-based derivatives, reveal their different RTP properties and underlying mechanism, and exploit their potential imaging applications. Coupled with the preliminary theoretical calculations, it is found that strong π–π interactions in solid state can promote the persistent RTP. Particularly, CS-CF 3 shows the unique photo-induced phosphorescence in response to the changes in molecular packing, further confirming the key influence of the molecular packing on the RTP property. Furthermore, CS-F with its long RTP lifetime could be utilized for real-time excitation-free phosphorescent imaging in living mice. Thus, our study paves the way for the development of persistent RTP materials, in both the practical applications and the inherent mechanism.

Abstract:AbstractPurely organic materials with room‐temperature phosphorescence (RTP) are currently under intense investigation because of their potential applications in sensing, imaging, and displaying. Inspired by certain organometallic systems, where ligand‐localized phosphorescence (3π‐π*) is mediated by ligand‐to‐metal or metal‐to‐ligand charge transfer (CT) states, we now show that donor‐to‐acceptor CT states from the same organic molecule can also mediate π‐localized RTP. In the model system of N‐substituted naphthalimides (NNIs), the relatively large energy gap between the NNI‐localized 1π‐π* and 3π‐π* states of the aromatic ring can be bridged by intramolecular CT states when the NNI is chemically modified with an electron donor. These NNI‐based RTP materials can be easily conjugated to both synthetic and natural macromolecules, which can be used for RTP microscopy.
