Abstract:Color-tunable and ultralong organic room temperature phosphorescence (URTP) materials have drawn extensive attention due to their various applications in many fields. Herein, a series of poly(acrylic acid) (PAA)-based RTP materials are facilely constructed through hydrogen bond engineering by binary doping of PAA with phenylboric acid and benzoic acid derivatives. PAA-based RTP materials all exhibit long lifetimes, and PAA-4-carboxyphenylboronic acid (PAA-CPBA) shows durable afterglow (more than 12 s) with an ultralong phosphorescence lifetime (up to 536 ms) under ambient conditions. PAA-1,4-benzendiboronic acid (PAA-BDA) displays multicolor tunable phosphorescence by changing the excitation wavelengths or BDA doping concentrations. Most impressively, the phosphorescence color of PAA-CPBA can change from blue to green by water vapor fumigation, and return to blue again through heating treatment. After sequential water vapor and heating treatment, the phosphorescence peak of PAA-CPBA is red-shifted from 425 nm to 525 nm with the excitation wavelength increasing from 230 to 300 nm. PAA-based RTP materials are further applied in information encryption and rewritable paper on the basis of the properties of ultralong luminescence lifetime and color-tunability. This work provides inspiration for the design and preparation of color-tunable polymer-based URTP materials.

Abstract:Polymer-based room temperature phosphorescence has attracted great attentions for the potential applications in organic light-emitting diodes, sensors, data encryption, and anti-counterfeiting. One of the most applied strategies to realize efficient room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) is to suppress the non-radiative transition by introducing secondary interactions (hydrogen bonding, ionic bonding etc.) between phosphors and polymer matrix. However, water and moisture will turn off the phosphorescence emission by damaging the hydrogen bonding network. Besides, the role of the polymer matrix on the photophysical process is still under developing. Herein, we successfully achieved robust long-lived room temperature phosphorescence materials based on purely polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) by in-situ doping with rigid polymer network during polymerization. The materials exhibited ultralong phosphorescence lifetime up to 1.27 s, large Stokes shift of 233 nm and a remarkable duration of afterglow over 12 s, which are extremely stable even under aqueous surrounding. Photophysical analysis and transient absorption spectroscopy reveal that the phosphorescence is facilitated by accelerating the intersystem crossing (ISC) from singlet to triplet states and suppressing the non-radiative transition of the triplet excitons within the rigid polymer matrix. Furthermore, 3D phosphorescent structures and 2D large-scale, transparent display with re-writable encoded information are fabricated with the facilely processing PAHs@polymer RTP materials.

Abstract:Abstract Room temperature phosphorescence (RTP) has drawn extensive attention in recent years. Efficient stimulus-responsive phosphorescent organic materials are attractive, but are extremely rare because of unclear design principles and intrinsically spin-forbidden intersystem crossing. Herein, we present a feasible and facile strategy to achieve ultraviolet irradiation-responsive ultralong RTP (IRRTP) of some simple organic phosphors by doping into amorphous poly(vinyl alcohol) matrix. In addition to the observed green and yellow afterglow emission with distinct irradiation-enhanced phosphorescence, the phosphorescence lifetime can be tuned by varying the irradiation period of 254 nm light. Significantly, the dynamic phosphorescence lifetime could be increased 14.3 folds from 58.03 ms to 828.81 ms in one of the obtained hybrid films after irradiation for 45 min under ambient conditions. As such, the application in polychromatic screen printing and multilevel information encryption is demonstrated. The extraordinary IRRTP in the amorphous state endows these systems with a highly promising potential for smart flexible luminescent materials and sensors with dynamically controlled phosphorescence.

Abstract:Amorphous polymers with ultralong room‐temperature phosphorescence (RTP) are highly promising for various applications. Particularly, polymer‐based RTP materials with multiple functions such as color‐tunability or stimulus‐responsiveness are highly desirable for multilevel anti‐counterfeiting but are rarely reported. Herein, we present a facile strategy to achieve a series of polymer‐based RTP materials with ultralong lifetime, multicolor afterglow, and reversible response to UV irradiation by simply embedding pyridine‐substituted triphenylamine derivatives into the polymer matrix poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) and poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA), respectively. Notably, the pyridine group with the capabilities of promoting intersystem crossing and forming hydrogen‐bonding interactions is essential for triggering ultralong RTP from the doping PVA system, among which the doping film TPA‐2Py@PVA exhibits excellent RTP property with an ultralong lifetime of 798.4 ms and a high quantum yield of 15.2%. By further co‐doping with the commercially available fluorescent dye, multicolor afterglow is obtained via phosphorescence energy transfer. While the doping PMMA system exhibits reversible photo‐activated ultralong RTP properties under continuous UV irradiation. Finally, we demonstrate potential applications of these doping PVA and PMMA systems with ultralong lifetime, multicolor afterglow, and photo‐activated ultralong RTP in multi‐dimensional anti‐counterfeiting. Abstract:AbstractPure organic materials with intrinsic room‐temperature phosphorescence typically rely on heavy atoms or heteroatoms. Two different strategies towards constructing organic room‐temperature phosphorescence (RTP) species based upon the through‐space charge transfer (TSCT) unit of [2.2]paracyclophane (PCP) were demonstrated. Materials with bromine atoms, PCP‐BrCz and PPCP‐BrCz, exhibit RTP lifetime of around 100 ms. Modulating the PCP core with non‐halogen‐containing electron‐withdrawing units, PCP‐TNTCz and PCP‐PyCNCz, successfully elongate the RTP lifetime to 313.59 and 528.00 ms, respectively, the afterglow of which is visible for several seconds under ambient conditions. The PCP‐TNTCz and PCP‐PyCNCz enantiomers display excellent circular polarized luminescence with dissymmetry factors as high as −1.2×10−2 in toluene solutions, and decent RTP lifetime of around 300 ms for PCP‐TNTCz enantiomers in crystalline state.

Abstract:Manipulation of the emission properties of pure organic room-temperature phosphors through molecular design is attractive but challenging. Tremendous efforts have been made to modulate their aggregation behaviors to suppress nonradiative decay in order to achieve efficient light emission and long lifetimes. However, success has been limited. To attain such a goal, here we present a rational design principle based on intrinsic molecular-structure engineering. Comprehensive investigations on the molecular orbitals revealed that an excited state with hybrid (n,π*) and (π,π*) configurations in appreciable proportion is desired. Tailoring the aromatic subunits in arylphenones can effectively tune the energy level and the orbital feature of the triplet exciton. Our experimental data reveal that a series of full-color pure organic phosphors with a balanced lifetime (up to 0.23 s) and efficiency (up to 36.0%) can be realized under ambient conditions, demonstrating the validity of our instructive design principle.

Abstract:<p>Room temperature phosphorescence (RTP) has attracted broad attention due to their long lifetimes, large Stokes shift, and widespread applications. Achieving RTP emission has long been a challenging task under common conditions, for the necessary requirements of promoting intersystem crossing processes and suppressing nonradiative transitions are always tough to meet. Over the past decade, RTP has been obtained through several specific strategies, among which an important method lies in immobilizing phosphors into polymer matrices. Via the effect of steric overcrowding exerted by the polymeric structures, the phosphorescence of the initial phosphors can be promoted significantly. Hence, polymer‐based pure organic materials have proved to be one newly emerging subject in the field of RTP materials. In this review article, the progresses of polymer‐based pure organic room temperature phosphorescent materials are elaborated from four main approaches, including doped polymer systems, copolymer systems, homopolymer systems, and host–guest complexation systems, whereby the design principles, synthesis methods, possible mechanisms, and applications are summarized and discussed in detail.</p>

Abstract:Room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) from organic materials have been widely studied especially in the recent decades, however, the majority can only release a single-color phosphorescence after removal of the excitation. Achieving color-tunable RTP from pure organic materials is attractive but still challenging. Herein, we report a family of color-tunable RTP materials by doping isophthalonitriles into polymers. The doped polymers not only possess adjustable phosphorescence from blue to green by controlling the excitation wavelength and the doping concentration, but also exhibit ultralong lifetimes (1048 ms for green-phosphorescence and 872 ms for blue-phosphorescence) and afterglow times (>10 s). Multi-level encryption was demonstrated by utilizing the multicolored phosphorescence realized through alternation of the excitation wavelength and adoption of different concentration doped polymers. Considering all the involved components are commercially available with low-cost, such a color-tunable and long afterglow system should be potential toward a broad field of advanced anti-counterfeiting applications.

Abstract:Ultra-long room temperature phosphorescence (URTP) has been increasingly recognized in pure organic luminophor in recent years. Through a simpler molecular design and charge separation-recombination pathway, organic luminophor can achieve even better URTP properties. In this work, we achieved URTP in a system of host-guest doped benzophenone derivatives whose phosphorescence is visible to the naked eye. The differences in the wavelength lifetimes of luminescent emission correspond to different photophysical mechanisms. Through a combination of theoretical calculations and experiments, the host acts as a powerful substrate that restricts the motion of the guest and inhibits the non-radiative transitions of the guest, accompanied by a charge transfer separation-recombination process between the host and the guest, resulting in an URTP phenomenon. Transient absorption results demonstrate the existence of a charge-separated state. The design strategy via charge separation is generic and easy to implement, providing a direction for the future design of doped URTP.

Abstract:Although room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) organic materials are a widely-studied topic especially popular in recent decades, long-lived RTP able to fulfil broad time-resolved application requirements reliably, are still rare. Polymeric materials doped with phosphorescent chromophores generally feature high productivity and diverse applications, compared with their crystalline counterparts. This study proves that pure polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) may even outperform chromophores containing hetero- or heavy-atoms. Full-color (blue, green, orange and red) polymer–PAHs with lifetimes >5000 ms under ambient conditions are constructed, which provide impressive values compared to the widely reported polymer-based RTP materials in the respective color regions. The polymer–PAHs could be fabricated on a large-scale using various methods (solution, melt and in situ polymerization), be processed into diverse forms (writing ink, fibers, films, and complex 3D architectures), and be used in a range of applications (anti-counterfeiting, information storage, and oxygen sensors). Plus their environmental (aqueous) stability makes the polymer–PAHs a promising option to expand the portfolio of organic RTPs.

Abstract:Long-lived room temperature phosphorescence (LRTP) is an attractive optical phenomenon in organic electronics and photonics. Despite the rapid advance, it is still a formidable challenge to explore a universal approach to obtain LRTP in amorphous polymers. Based on the traditional polyethylene derivatives, we herein present a facile and concise chemical strategy to achieve ultralong phosphorescence in polymers by ionic bonding cross-linking. Impressively, a record LRTP lifetime of up to 2.1 s in amorphous polymers under ambient conditions is set up. Moreover, multicolor long-lived phosphorescent emission can be procured by tuning the excitation wavelength in single-component polymer materials. These results outline a fundamental principle for the construction of polymer materials with LRTP, endowing traditional polymers with fresh features for potential applications.

Abstract:Polymeric materials exhibiting room temperature phosphorescence (RTP) show a promising application potential. However, the conventional ways of preparing such materials are mainly focused on doping, which may suffer from phase separation, poor compatibility, and lack of effective methods to promote intersystem crossing and suppress the nonradiative deactivation rates. Herein, we present an intrinsically polymeric RTP system producing long-lived phosphorescence, high quantum yields and multiple colors by stepwise structural confinement to tame triplet excitons. In this strategy, the performance of the materials is improved in two aspects simultaneously: the phosphorescence lifetime of one polymer (9VA-B) increased more than 4 orders of magnitude, and the maximum phosphorescence quantum yield reached 16.04% in halogen-free polymers. Moreover, crack detection is realized by penetrating steam through the materials exposed to humid surroundings as a special quenching effect, and the information storage is carried out by employing the Morse code and the variations in lifetimes. This study provides a different strategy for constructing intrinsically polymeric RTP materials toward targeted applications.

Abstract:Supramolecular polymers with different functionalities have been continuously developed in the past decade because of their indispensable role in soft materials. However, pure organic supramolecular polymers with stable room temperature phosphorescence (RTP) emission were very rarely reported for the difficulties of synthesis and achieving RTP in solution. Herein, soluble helical supramolecular polymers with circularly polarized room-temperature phosphorescence were developed via a facile host-guest strategy. Through assembly, a transition from pure fluorescence to almost pure RTP emission was achieved. Adjusting the asymmetry of guest could easily control the chiroptical property of supramolecular polymers. This work provides new opportunities for the design and development of intelligent soft functional soft materials.

Abstract:Solution-processed organic-inorganic hybrid perovskites are promising emitters for next-generation optoelectronic devices. Multiple-colored, bright light emission is achieved by tuning their composition and structures. However, there is very little research on exploring optically active organic cations for hybrid perovskites. Here, unique room-temperature phosphorescence from hybrid perovskites is reported by employing novel organic cations. Efficient room-temperature phosphorescence is activated by designing a mixed-cation perovskite system to suppress nonradiative recombination. Multiple-colored phosphorescence is achieved by molecular design. Moreover, the emission lifetime can be tuned by varying the perovskite composition to achieve persistent luminescence. Efficient room-temperature phosphorescence is demonstrated in hybrid perovskites that originates from the triplet states of the organic cations, opening a new dimension to the further development of perovskite emitters with novel functional organic cations for versatile display applications.

Abstract:A series of poly(1,4-dihydropyridine)s (PDHPs) were successfully synthesized via one-pot metal-free multicomponent polymerization of diacetylenic esters, benzaldehyde, and aniline derivatives. These PDHPs without traditional luminescent units were endowed with tunable triplet energy levels by through-space conjugation from the formation of different cluster sizes. The large and compact clusters can effectively extend the phosphorescence wavelength. The triplet excitons can be stabilized by using benzophenone as a rigid matrix to achieve room-temperature phosphorescence. The nonconjugated polymeric clusters can show a phosphorescence emission up to 645 nm. A combination of static and dynamic laser light scattering was conducted for insight into the structural information on formed clusters in the host matrix melt. Moreover, both the fluorescence and phosphorescence emission can be easily tuned by the variation of the excitation wavelength, the concentration, and the molecular weight of the guest polymers. This work provides a unique insight for designing polymeric host-guest systems and a new strategy for the development of long wavelength phosphorescence materials.

Abstract:Room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) polymers have important applications for biological imaging, oxygen sensing, data encryption, and photodynamic therapy. Despite the many advantages polymeric materials offer such as great control over gas permeability and processing flexibility, disorder is traditionally considered as an intrinsic negative impact on the efficiency for embedded RTP luminophores, as various allowed thermal motions could quench the emitting states. However, we propose that such disorder-enabled freedoms of microscopic motions can be beneficial for charge-transfer-mediated RTP, which is facilitated by molecular conformational changes among different electronic transition states. Using the "classic" pyrene-aniline exciplex as an example, we demonstrate the mutual enhancement of red/near-infrared and green RTP emissions from the pyrene and aniline moieties, respectively, upon doping the aniline polymer with trace pyrene derivatives. In comparison, a pyrene-doped crystal formed with the same aniline structure exhibits only charge-transfer fluorescence with no red or green RTP observed, suggesting that order suppresses the RTP channels. The proposed polymerization strategy may be used as a unified method to generate multi-emissive polymeric RTP materials from a vast pool of known and unknown exciplexes and charge-transfer complexes.

Abstract:Abstract Long‐lived room temperature phosphorescence (RTP) systems have become a research focus in the field of functional materials due to their fascinating luminescence properties. However, it is still an enormous challenge to realize RTP under ambient conditions, since RTP can be quenched easily by molecular oxygen. Herein, two polymer acceptors containing triphenyl phosphonium bromide salt are designed and synthesized successfully. They are then doped into a poly(methyl methacrylate) matrix with donor molecules to form flexible films with long‐lived RTP. Interestingly, the long‐lived RTP performance is highly dependent on the grafting rate of the polymers. Upon increasing the grafting rate, the aggregation degree of polymer acceptors increases, further inhibiting the molecular movement in the aggregates and reducing nonradiative vibration deactivation of triplet excitons for achieving green long‐lived RTP. Meanwhile, the visualization of real information and complete pattern after 365 nm UV irradiation is demonstrated based on these long‐lived RTP systems, presenting application potential toward dynamic multilevel information encryption and display devices. This work provides an innovative principle for the activation of long‐lived RTP in the polymeric systems under ambient conditions.

Time-dependent Color-Tunable Room Temperature Phosphorescence from Unusual Conformational Transitions in Phenothiazine Polymers under UV Irradiation

Abstract:Achieving color-tunable room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP), especially including blue RTP from a single-component polymer still faces a formidable challenge. Herein, we wisely choose conformation-dependent phenothiazine with trifluoromethyl substituent as the side group of the phosphor monomer (CzPT) and then copolymerize it with N-isopropylacrylamide (NIPAM) through photopolymerization to obtain polymers PPCzPTs. Time-dependent color-tunable phosphorescence from unusual quasi-equatorial (eq) to quasi-axial (ax) conformers are obtained, and the RTP color changes from orange (550 nm) to blue (470 nm) with phosphorescence lifetime up to 0.96 s. The theoretical calculations confirm that the quasi-axial conformer is the preferred structure that facilitates the formation of intramolecular hydrogen bonds on the trifluoromethyl group. The EPR spectra illustrate that the persistent UV irradiation generates radical cations to induce the conformational transitions first, followed by photopolymerization immobilizing the ax conformation in PPCzPTs. Applications of data encryption and anti-counterfeiting are fabricated to show prompt and delayed multicolor information. This work affords a simple and feasible avenue for two-dimensional color tunable room temperature phosphorescence from a single-component polymer.
