Abstract:The authors consider the short time existence for Ricci-Bourguignon flow on manifolds with boundary. If the initial metric has constant mean curvature and satisfies some compatibility conditions, they show the short time existence of the Ricci-Bourguignon flow with constant mean curvature on the boundary.

Abstract:We consider the problem of conformally deforming a metric by a fully nonlinear flow on a compact manifold with totally geodesic boundary. We prove that the k-curvature defined by the modified Schouten tensor always can be deformed in a natural way to a constant at exponential rate and the boundary preserves totally geodesic.

Abstract:We study the long-time behavior of the solution to the connection Ricci flow on closed three-manifolds. The connection Ricci flow is a generalization of the Ricci flow to connection with torsion. We compare the evolving metrics under the connection Ricci flow and Ricci flow for some special cases. We obtain the blow-up rate of the Ricci tensor under the connection Ricci flow. Based on the result, we give the classification of the maximal solutions to the flow.

Abstract:Under the hypothesis of mean curvature flows of hypersurfaces, we prove that the limit of the smooth rescaling of the singularity is weakly convex. It is a generalization of the result due to G. Huisken and C. Sinestrari in [5]. These a-priori bounds are satisfied for mean convex hypersurfaces in locally symmetric Riemannian manifolds with nonnegative sectional curvature.

Abstract:Let M n be a smooth, compact manifold without boundary, and F 0: M n → R n+1 a smooth immersion which is convex. The one-parameter families F(·, t): M n × [0, T) → R n+1 of hypersurfaces M t n = F(·, t)(M n ) satisfy an initial value problem dt/dF(·, t) = −H k (·, t)ν(·, t), F(·, 0) = F 0(·), where H is the mean curvature and ν(·, t) is the outer unit normal at F(·, t), such that −H ν = $\overrightarrow H $ is the mean curvature vector, and k > 0 is a constant. This problem is called H k -flow. Such flow will develop singularities after finite time. According to the blow-up rate of the square norm of the second fundamental forms, the authors analyze the structure of the rescaled limit by classifying the singularities as two types, i.e., Type I and Type II. It is proved that for Type I singularity, the limiting hypersurface satisfies an elliptic equation; for Type II singularity, the limiting hypersurface must be a translating soliton.
Long-time Ricci flow existence and topological rigidity from manifolds with pinched scale-invariant integral curvature

Abstract:We prove long-time existence of the Ricci flow starting from complete manifolds with bounded curvature and scale-invariant integral curvature sufficiently pinched with respect to the inverse of its Sobolev constant. Moreover, if the curvature is sub-critical $L^p$ integrable, this flow converges locally smoothly to a limiting metric $g(\infty)$ on $M$ with $(M,g(\infty))$ isometric to the standard flat $\mathbb{R}^n$, which implies topological rigidity of $M$. This generalizes work of Chen, who proved analogous results for asymptotically flat manifolds. We also prove a long-time Ricci flow existence (and likewise topological rigidity) result for unbounded curvature initial data, assuming the initial data is a locally smooth limit of bounded curvature manifolds as described above.

Abstract:We show that in dimension 4 and above, the lifespan of Ricci flows depends on the relative smallness of the Ricci curvature compared to the Riemann curvature on the initial manifold. We can generalize this lifespan estimate to the local Ricci flow, using which we prove the short-time existence of Ricci flow solutions on noncompact Riemannian manifolds with at most quadratic curvature growth, whose Ricci curvature and its first two derivatives are sufficiently small in regions where the Riemann curvature is large. Those Ricci flow solutions may have unbounded curvature. Moreover, our method implies that, under some appropriate assumptions, the spatial transfer rate (the rate at which high curvature regions affect low curvature regions) of the Ricci flow resembles that of the heat equation.

Abstract:Let (M-n, g) be a compact n-dimensional (n >= 2) manifold with nonnegative Ricci curvature, and if n >= 3, then we assume that (M-n, g) x R has nonnegative isotropic curvature. The lower bound of the Ricci flow's existence time on (M-n, g) is proved. This provides an alternative proof for the uniform lower bound of a family of closed Ricci flows' maximal existence times, which was first proved by E. Cabezas-Rivas and B. Wilking. We also get an interior curvature estimate for n = 3 under Rc >= 0 assumption among others. Combining these results, we proved the short-time existence of the Ricci flow on a large class of three-dimensional open manifolds, which admit some suitable exhaustion covering and have nonnegative Ricci curvature.

Abstract:In this work, we study the short-time existence theory of Ricci-DeTurck flow starting from rough metrics which satisfy a Morrey-type integrability condition. Using the rough existence theory, we show the preservation and improvement of distributional scalar curvature lower bounds provided the singular set for such metrics is not too large. As an application, we use the Ricci flow smoothing to study the removable singularity for scalar curvature rigidity in the compact case under Morrey regularity conditions. Our result supplements those of Jiang-Sheng-Zhang.

Abstract:In this paper, we give the first detailed proof of the short-time existence of Deane Yang’s local Ricci flow. Then, using the local Ricci flow, we prove the short-time existence of the Ricci flow on noncompact manifolds, whose Ricci curvature has global lower bound and sectional curvature has only local average integral bound. The short-time existence of the Ricci flow on noncompact manifolds with bounded curvature was studied by Wan-Xiong Shi in the 1990s. As a corollary of our main theorem, we obtain the short-time existence part of Shi’s theorem in this more general context.

Abstract:In this article we show that generally almost regular flows, introduced by Bamler and Kleiner, in closed 3-manifolds will either go extinct in finite time or flow to a collection of smooth embedded minimal surfaces, possibly with multiplicity. Using a perturbative argument then we construct piecewise almost regular flows which either go extinct in finite time or flow to a stable minimal surface, possibly with multiplicity. We apply these results to construct minimal surfaces in 3-manifolds in a variety of circumstances, mainly novel from the point of the view that the arguments are via parabolic methods.

Abstract:On a compact Riemannian manifold with boundary, we study how Ricci curvature of the interior affects the geometry of the boundary. First, we establish integral inequalities for functions defined solely on the boundary and apply them to obtain geometric inequalities involving the total mean curvature. Then, we discuss related rigidity questions and prove Ricci curvature rigidity results for manifolds with boundary.

Abstract:A question about Ricci flow is when the diameters of the manifold under the evolving metrics stay finite and bounded away from 0. Topping \cite{T:1} addresses the question with an upper bound that depends on the $L^{(n-1)/2}$ bound of the scalar curvature, volume and a local version of Perelman's $\nu$ invariant. Here $n$ is the dimension. His result is sharp when Perelman's F entropy is positive. In this note, we give a direct proof that for all compact manifolds, the diameter bound depends just on the $L^{(n-1)/2}$ bound of the scalar curvature, volume and the Sobolev constants (or positive Yamabe constant). This bound seems directly computable in large time for some Ricci flows. In addition, since the result in its most general form is independent of Ricci flow, further applications may be possible. A generally sharp lower bound for the diameters is also given, which depends only on the initial metric, time and $L^\infty$ bound of the scalar curvature. These results imply that, in finite time, the Ricci flow can neither turn the diameter to infinity nor zero, unless the scalar curvature blows up.

Novel Boundary Conditions for the Ricci Flow

Abstract:If we want to deform a compact Riemannian manifold with boundary using Ricci flow, we first need to decide on appropriate boundary conditions. We would like these conditions to reflect the geometric nature of the flow and allow for a variety of initial data. Importantly, the conditions should be compatible with the expected evolution of Einstein metrics. We propose it is natural to choose those conditions, for which the first variation of certain functionals, such as the Einstein-Hilbert action and Perelmans lambda-functional, does not admit a boundary term. We provide a proof of the short term existence of solutions of the initial boundary value problem, under these conditions.

Abstract:In this paper, we continue to study the generalized Ricci flow. We give a criterion on steady gradient Ricci soliton on complete and noncompact Riemannian manifolds that is Ricci-flat, and then introduce a natural flow whose stable points are Ricci-flat metrics. Modifying the argument used by Shi and List, we prove the short time existence and higher order derivatives estimates.

Abstract:We prove the short-time existence of Ricci flows on complete manifolds with scalar curvature bounded below uniformly, Ricci curvature bounded below by a negative quadratic function, and with almost Euclidean isoperimetric inequality holds locally. In particular, this result applies to manifolds with both Ricci curvature and injectivity radius bounded from below. We also study the short-time behaviour of these solutions which may have unbounded curvature at the initial time, and provide some applications. A key tool is Perelman's pseudolocality theorem.

Abstract:In this paper, we study Ricci flow on compact manifolds with a continuous initial metric. It was known from Simon (2002) that the Ricci flow exists for a short time. We prove that the scalar curvature lower bound is preserved along the Ricci flow if the initial metric has a scalar curvature lower bound in the distributional sense provided that the initial metric is W 1, p for some n < p ⩽ ∞. As an application, we use this result to study the relation between the Yamabe invariant and Ricci flat metrics. We prove that if the Yamabe invariant is nonpositive and the scalar curvature is nonnegative in the distributional sense, then the manifold is isometric to a Ricci flat manifold.

Abstract:Consider a Riemannian manifold $(M^{m}, g)$ whose volume is the same as the standard sphere $(S^{m}, g_{round})$. If $p>\frac{m}{2}$ and $\int_{M} \left\{ Rc-(m-1)g\right\}_{-}^{p} dv$ is sufficiently small, we show that the normalized Ricci flow initiated from $(M^{m}, g)$ will exist immortally and converge to the standard sphere.
