Abstract:One of the leading figures of post-war palynology, Basil Eric Balme, passed away on 10 July 2023 in his 100 th year. He was born on 13 June 1923 in Perth, Western Australia. His grandfather hailed from Yorkshire and his father had been involved in the Battle of Passchendaele in WWI as a member of the Australian forces. After the war, his father worked in Collie and farmed at Meckering before becoming a shopkeeper in Victoria Park and then South Perth. Consequently, Basil attended a variety of primary schools before gaining entry to Scotch College as a Coombe Scholar with a Council Scholarship. There he made his mark playing Australian Rules football and cricket, and was Head Boy in his final year. Basil commenced studies at the University of Western Australia (UWA) in 1941, initially in engineering before switching to science, majoring in geology, where the lecturer in palaeontology was the internationally renowned Curt Teichert (1905–1996). However, in 1942 he suspended his studies to enlist in the Royal Australian Navy. Initially, he received intensive training in the then-new radar technology and went on to serve as a radar operator and eventually Petty Officer on ships in the Mediterranean and Pacific. He recalled serving for several months on a ship and had several discussions with Philip Mountbatten (subsequently Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh).

Abstract:On Saturday 26 September, around 4am, John Barrow died aged 67, with his wife Elizabeth and son Roger at his side. From a scientific perspective, it is hard to conceive a more premature end. During lockdown alone, whilst undergoing chemotherapy and in the full knowledge that his cancer was inoperable, John managed to co-author 11 scientific papers and write a new book ("One Plus One"). Even by his own standards of productivity, this is staggeringly impressive, an achievement he was openly proud of. From a broader perspective, with a wife, 3 children and 5 young grandchildren, many strong friendships, and so much more to offer the world, he departed far too soon.

Abstract:Alan Baker, Fields Medallist, died on 4th February 2018 in Cambridge England after a severe stroke a few days earlier. In 1970 he was awarded the Fields Medal at the International Congress in Nice on the basis of his outstanding work on linear forms in logarithms and its consequences. Since then he received many honours including the prestigious Adams Prize of Cambridge University, the election to the Royal Society (1973) and the Academia Europaea; and he was made an honorary fellow of University College London, a foreign fellow of the Indian Academy of Science, a foreign fellow of the National Academy of Sciences India, an honorary member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, and a fellow of the American Mathematical Society. In this article we survey Alan Baker's achievements.

Abstract:Robert 'Bob' Travis Clarke, palynologist and one of AASP-TPS's most influential members and officers (), died on 4 October 2024, in Arlington, Texas, USA, at the age of 86. His health had been failing throughout the summer and included five hospital stays, and many tests and courses of antibiotics. Bob was born on 17 November 1937, in Brooklyn, New York. He grew up in East Meadow, Long Island, with his parents Tresper and Mary Louise Clarke, and brother Bill, all of whom predeceased him. Bob attended Muskingum University, a liberal arts college in New Concord, Ohio. Following a rather hair-raising spring break road trip to Norman, Oklahoma in 1957, in his dad's 1935 Plymouth in the company of his friend Brian, he transferred to the University of Oklahoma (UO) as a junior. It was there that Virgil Dale Wiggins introduced him to his master's supervisor, the recently arrived Leonard R. 'Doc' Wilson, in the spring of 1958. He remained at UO for the remainder of his academic career, completing a Bachelor of Science in Geology in 1959, a Master's of Science (Clarke 1961), and a Doctor of Philosophy (Clarke 1963). For the latter two qualifications Bob studied palynology under the tutelage of Doc Wilson.

Abstract:In early 1978, the American Museum of Natural History appointed Dr. John Van Couvering as Editor-in-Chief of Micropaleontology Press, a program that began as a Works Progress Administration (WPA) project in 1935 and had been housed at the Museum since 1942. For John, this was the beginning of a 38 year-commitment to the dissemination of knowledge on the microscopic shells of protists, through cataloguing and editing scientific journals. While John officially retired in 2016, he continued to volunteer his time and expertise until shortly before his passing on May 22, 2023.

Abstract:In this obituary, the life and work of Professor James Albert Lock is summarized (if it is possible to summarize a life spanning more than seven decades and work presented in about 200 communications, including 160 refereed papers). The charming, peaceful and friendly personality of "Jim" (as he wished/liked to be called by his relatives, family and friends) is best described by personal recollections from the authors of this obituary. Personalities like Jim's make us still go on believing in the chances of the human species, whatever would be the foolish agitation of the world.

Abstract:David Lewis (), who died last year at the age of 85, regularly attended paper-reading meetings of the BBS, and its annual general meetings, from the 1960s to the 1980s. He was a frequent speaker on bryophyte biochemistry. His studies of soluble carbohydrates and lignin in bryophytes were groundbreaking, drawing on his considerable chemical and technical expertise, although he happily admitted his reliance on BBS members for the identification and collection of source materials.

Abstract:Richard A. Litherland was born in 1953 in England. He received his PhD at Trinity College in Cambridge in 1979 and moved to the USA in 1983. He had a lengthy and distinguished career as a professor of mathematics and researcher of low-dimensional topology, based primarily at Louisiana State University (LSU) in Baton Rouge until his untimely passing in November 2022. In this paper we (Rick's family and students) recount some memories of Rick, his life and his mathematics.

SBP’s Editor-in-Chief, Dr Robert A. C. Stewart was privileged to have Dr. Rosenthal as one of his professors while a graduate student at Harvard University in 1964–1965. He well remembers Dr. Rosenthal’s easy, inviting manner as a person. Having chosen to join our Board in the early years of the journal, Dr. Rosenthal was to remain, over the decades, a valued member of our advisory team until his death early this year.

Abstract:Larry Young, the self-described "guy who spends his days thinking about love and bonding in terms of biochemical reactions in localized circuits of the brain" (The Chemistry Between Us1), passed away, too early, in March 2024. He was a brilliant scientist who used prairie voles (Microtus ochrogaster) and other rodents to pioneer a deeper understanding of the mechanisms by which the neuropeptides oxytocin and vasopressin act in the mammalian brain to mediate affiliative behaviors. He was also so much more—to his family, his field, his trainees and colleagues, and the larger world with whom he so skillfully communicated his complex studies that have illuminated how the social brain works.

Abstract:Alan Parkes was one of the most influential figures in the field of reproductive biology in the twentieth century. He had a huge impact on its growth and development during that time, and the legacy of his work still remains.His research was highly innovative and original because of his imaginative and inquiring mind, which, coupled with an entrepreneurial bent, led him into several very different fields and into unchartered waters. He played a leading role in the spectacular rise of reproductive endocrinology in Britain in the 1920s and 1930s when the nature and activity of many of the reproductive processes in animals and humans and was an essential factor in the development of methods for their control. Even more pioneering was his research in low-temperature biology in the years after World War II. This was sparked off by the discovery that glycerol had a remarkable property of protecting spermatozoa against damage during freezing and storage at very low temperatures. Far-reaching applications arose from this discovery, especially in the preservation of bull semen, which led to a worldwide revolution in artificial insemination in cattle. Later, many other cells and tissues were also successfully frozen, including red blood cells, ovarian tissue and bone marrow, and a new branch of biological science, which became known as 'cryobiology', was born, Effects of deep hypothermia, including freezing, on whole animals were also investigated at that time. Having successfully launched a new area of science, it was characteristic of Alan Parkes to switch to new fields. First he became interested in the influence of pheromones on mammalian reproduction. Then, resuming a long-standing interest in comparative aspects of reproductive physiology in British wild mammals, he became involved in the work of the Nuffield Unit of Tropical Animal Ecology in Uganda, where similar studies were carried out on African animals. Even after retirement from the academic field, he was for some years a consultant to an enterprise in the conservation and captive breeding of green sea turtles in the Cayman Islands. In addition to his research, Alan Parkes was just as influential through the huge amount of work that he did for committees and other activities. Over the years he was on 35 different committees, study groups or advisory groups, and these were concerned with a wide variety of interests. He often served as chairman or secretary and had a great ability to take on a large amount of work and responsibility. He threw himself wholeheartedly into promoting the interests of reproductive biology and was a founding member of both the Society of Endocrinology and the Society for the Study of Fertility. He also played a leading role in the establishment and running of the Journal of Endocrinology and the Journal of Reproduction and Fertility. Getting these journals established often required a considerable amount of financial acumen. One of his special concerns was a long-standing interest in demographic and population issues, which led to his working closely with the International Planned Parenthood Federation and the Family Planning Association. He saw the 'population explosion' as a growing threat to the environment and to human welfare, and he was an outstanding proponent of measures to effect population control. Sometimes this led him into controversial areas. He spoke strongly in support of women's right to abortion and questioned the morality of expensive measures to overcome infertility. Throughout his life he was a prolific and lucid writer and his many publications remain a lasting monument to his contribution to science. He entitled the first volume of his autobiography Off-beat biologist, which is perhaps a very apt description of this remarkable man.

Abstract:ABSTRACT A memorial tribute detailing the life and scientific accomplishments of Frank A. L. Anet, a pioneer of nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy who discovered bedrock principles in organic chemistry and magnetic resonance. He was the first to show that nuclear Overhauser effects could provide structural information, significantly impacting future NMR applications. In the 1960s and 1970s, he built entire multinuclear NMR spectrometers operating as high as 396 MHz for protons, detecting nuclei inaccessible to commercial instruments, and operating at very low temperatures for studying molecular structure and dynamics. A titan of physical organic chemistry, Frank made important contributions in the areas of conformational analysis, stereochemistry, isotope effects, NMR relaxation theory, and chemical origins of life.

Abstract:George James Allman (1812-1898), acclaimed for pioneering studies of Hydrozoa and Bryozoa, was born in Cork, Ireland. He earned B.A. (1839) and M.B. (1843) degrees at Trinity College, Dublin, and an M.D. (1847) from Trinity College and Oxford University. Choosing academia over medicine, he served as Professor of Botany, University of Dublin (1844-1855), and as Regius Professor of Natural History, University of Edinburgh (1855-1870). Allman initially undertook research on freshwater bryozoans, but his interests later turned to marine hydroids. His bibliography, with publication dates retraced herein, comprises more than 200 titles. Most important of these were monographs on limnic Bryozoa (1857) and "gymnoblastic" or anthoathecate Hydrozoa (1871, 1872). Other prime works were on hydroids from the Straits of Florida (1877) and from the Challenger Expedition (1883, 1888). He named 22 families, 64 genera and 283 species of Hydrozoa, along with three families and nine species of Bryozoa. Of these, names of some five families, 19 genera, and 146 species of hydrozoans, along with three families and three species of bryozoans, are currently recognized as valid. For distinguished academic service, Allman was awarded the Royal Medal (Royal Society of London, 1873), the Brisbane Prize (Royal Society of Edinburgh, 1873), the Cunningham Medal (Royal Irish Academy, 1878), the Gold Medal (Linnean Society of London, 1896), and an LL.D. from the University of Edinburgh (1873). He died 24 November 1898 in Parkstone, Dorset, England. Two genera and 22 species have been named in his honour.
