Abstract:Nitrogen-functionalized microporous carbon nanoparticles (N-MCNs) are prepared by direct carbonization of a novel polymer obtained from the Schiff base reaction of terephthalaldehyde and m-phenylenediamine. The carbonization temperature plays a crucial role in the porosity, surface chemistry and capacitive performance for the carbons. N-MCN850 sample shows a much larger specific surface area of 1938m2g−1, a higher specific capacitance of 397Fg−1 and 145Fg−1 at the current density of 0.1 and 100Ag−1 in 6M KOH aqueous electrolyte, respectively. The results indicate its outstanding capacitive behavior and ultrahigh-rate performance. In addition, the electrode shows excellent cycling stability along with 98% of the initial specific capacitance after 5000 charge/discharge cycles.
Highly Active N, O-doped Hierarchical Porous Carbons for High-Energy Supercapacitors

Abstract:Highly active N, O-doped hierarchical porous carbons (NOCs) are fabricated through the in-situ polymerization and pyrolysis of o-tolidine and p-benzoquinone. As-prepared NOCs have a variety of faradaic-active species (N-6, N-5 and O-I), high ion-accessible platform (1799 m2/g) and hierarchically micro–meso–macro porous architecture. Consequently, the resultant NOC electrode delivers an advantageous specific capacitance (311 F/g), with a pseudocapacitive contribution of 37％ in a three-electrode configuration, and an enhanced energy output of 18.0 Wh/kg@350 W/kg owing to the enlarged faradaic effect in an aqueous redox-active cell. Besides, a competitive energy density (74.9 Wh/kg) and high-potential durability (87.8％) are achieved in an ionic liquid (EMIMBF4)-assembled device. This study sheds light on a straightforward avenue to optimize the faradaic activity and nanoarchitecture for advanced supercapacitors.

Abstract:The high power density and long cyclic stability of N-doped carbon make it an attractive material for supercapacitor electrodes. Nevertheless, its low energy density limits its practical application. To solve the above issues, Fe2O3 embedded in N-doped porous carbon (Fe2O3/N-PC) was designed by pyrolyzing Hemin/activated carbon (Hemin/AC) composites. A porous structure allows rapid diffusion of electrons and ions during charge–discharge due to its large surface area and conductive channels. The redox reactions of Fe2O3 particles and N heteroatoms contribute to pseudocapacitance, which greatly enhances the supercapacitive performance. Fe2O3/N-PC showed a superior capacitance of 290.3 F g−1 at 1 A g−1 with 93.1% capacity retention after 10,000 charge–discharge cycles. Eventually, a high energy density of 37.6 Wh kg−1 at a power density of 1.6 kW kg−1 could be delivered with a solid symmetric device.

Abstract:A series of nitrogen-doped (N-doped) polymeric resin-derived porous carbons (NPCs) have been fabricated by a direct carbonization of the mixture of polymeric resin and potassium acetate. The polymeric resin serves as carbon and nitrogen precursor and potassium acetate as activation agent. The prepared carbons have a high specific surface area of 1946 m(2) g(-1) and high N content of approximately 6.37 at%. The NPC-700 sample exhibits a highest specific capacitance of 312 F g(-1) at 0.5 A g(-1) in a three-electrode system in 7 M KOH. When tested with a two-electrode system, the optimal sample NPC-800 shows a good rate performance (capacitance retention of 73% in the range of 0.05 A g(-1) to 20 A g(-1)) and high cycling stability (96.5% retention after 5000 cycles at 2 A g(-1)). The easy preparation and superior electrochemical performances render the NPCs a promising alternative electrode material for supercapacitor.

Abstract:A novel activated nitrogen‐doped hierarchically porous carbon (ANPC) material, which has been synthesized using polyurethane foam as the supporting template, phenolic resin with high carbonization ratio and low‐cost ammonium polyphosphate as the carbon and nitrogen sources, respectively. The preparation process comprises of curing and carbonization combined with KOH activation. Despite the simplicity of the process, the obtained ANPC‐4 exhibit a high specific surface area (1452 m2/g), a well‐developed specific pore volume (0.799 cm3/g), moderate mesoporous content (32.7%), good electrolyte ions transport property, and appropriate nitrogen dopant content. When used as a material for fabricating supercapacitor electrodes, the ANPC‐4 exhibited significantly high capacitance value of 356 F/g at 0.2 A/g in a 6 M KOH electrolyte with outstanding rate performance. In addition, the symmetrical capacitors assembled by ANPC‐4 have good specific capacitance (a specific capacitance of 175 F/g at 0.2 A/g), high energy density up to 24.3 Wh/kg, and good cycling stability (94.5% capacitance retention after 10,000 cycles of testing). Abstract:N-doped carbons with high surface areas were prepared through one-step chemical activation by using polyurethane foam as carbon and nitrogen source and KOH as activation agent. The morphology, elemental content, surface area and the pore structure of the resulting carbon-based products were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), nitrogen adsorption-desorption, X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The carbon-based product obtained at 700 degrees C (FC700) possesses the largest surface area and pore volume, contributing by the interaction between KOH and the polyurethane foam. In three-electrode system, the capacitance can reach up to 452 F.g(-1) at a current density of 0.5 A.g(-1) in 6.0 mol.L-1 KOH solution. In a symmetric supercapacitor, the capacitance can reach 344 F.g(-1) and the energy density is 11.9 Wh.kg(-1) at the power density of 247 W.kg(-1). And the capacitance can maintain 98.03% of the initial capacitance, demonstrating the excellent stability. The excellent electrochemical performance of FC700 can be ascribed to the high surface area, large pore volume and nitrogen doping.

Abstract:Nitrogen-doped porous graphene/carbon (NPGC) framework electrode materials have been synthesized via chemical activation of graphene oxide/polypyrrole (GOP) composites with KOH. The effects of the mass ratio of KOH/GOP and activation temperature on the electrochemical performance of NPGC have been discussed. It is found that the NPGC prepared by activating GOP (GO : Py = 1 : 40) with 3.5 times mass of KOH at 650 degrees C (NPGC650) exhibits the highest specific capacitance of 405 F g(-1) at a current density of 0.2 A g(-1). Particularly, the specific capacitance still remains at 249 F g(-1) even at a current density as high as 10 A g(-1). Moreover, 96% of the capacitance can be retained after 1000 cycles even under a high operation current of 10 A g(-1). The present work provides a novel strategy to synthesize NGPC electrode material for supercapacitors.

Abstract:As one of the most promising fast energy storage devices, supercapacitor has been attracting intense attention for many emerging applications. However, how to enhance the electrochemical performance of electrode materials is still the main issue among various researches. In this paper, hierarchical porous carbons derived from <i>Eleocharis dulcis</i> has been prepared by chemical activation process with the aid of KOH at elevated temperature. Results show that the N, P co-doped porous carbon exhibits excellent electrochemical performance, it owns a specific capacitance of 340.2 F/g at 1 A/g, and obtains outstanding cycling stability of 96.9% of capacitance retention at 10 A/g after 5,000 cycles in a three-electrode system. Moreover, in the two-electrode system, the product still maintains a high specific capacitance of 227.2 F/g at 1 A/g, and achieves good electrochemical cycle stability (94.2% of capacitance retention at 10 A/g after 10,000 cycles); besides, its power/energy density are 3694.084 and 26.289 Wh/kg, respectively. Therefore, the combination of facile synthesis strategy and excellent electrochemical performance makes <i>Eleocharis dulcis</i>-based porous carbon as a promising electrode material for supercapacitor.

Abstract:A series of N-doped carbons with hierarchically micro-and mesoporous structure were prepared by using silica nanoparticles as the template, ethylenediamine (EDA) and CCl4 as carbon and nitrogen sources, and potassium hydroxide (KOH) as the activation agent. The obtained carbons were characterized with N-2 adsorption, transmission electronic microscope (TEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), elemental analysis as well as electrochemical methods. It was found that the nitrogen-doped carbon (NC) without being activated shows lower capacitive performance due to the low surface area (287m(2) g(-1)) while the carbon activated at 800 degrees C (NC800) shows the best capacitive performance and the capacitance can reach up to 417 F g(-1) at a current density of 0.5 A g(-1) due to the ultra-high surface area (3056m(2) g(-1)), large mesopores (similar to 3 nm) and the proper nitrogen content. The large surface area is beneficial to the double-layer capacitance while the nitrogen content attributes to the pseudocapacitance. The larger mesopores and micropores are in favor of the decrease of mass transfer resistance. After 5000 cycles at a current density of 3 A g(-1), the capacitance of NC800 can still maintain 97.6% of original capacitance. Abstract:Supercapacitors (also known as ultracapacitors) are considered to be the most promising approach to meet the pressing requirements of energy storage. Supercapacitive electrode materials, which are closely related to the high-efficiency storage of energy, have provoked more interest. Herein, we present a high-capacity supercapacitor material based on the nitrogen-doped porous carbon nanofibers synthesized by carbonization of macroscopic-scale carbonaceous nanofibers (CNFs) coated with polypyrrole (CNFs@polypyrrole) at an appropriate temperature. The composite nanofibers exhibit a reversible specific capacitance of 202.0 F g(-1) at the current density of 1.0 A g(-1) in 6.0 mol L(-1) aqueous KOH electrolyte, meanwhile maintaining a high-class capacitance retention capability and a maximum power density of 89.57 kW kg(-1). This kind of nitrogen-doped carbon nanofiber represents an alternative promising candidate for an efficient electrode material for supercapacitors.
Organic Crosslinked Polymer-Derived N/O-Doped Porous Carbons for High-Performance Supercapacitor

Abstract:Supercapacitors, as a new type of green electrical energy storage device, are a potential solution to environmental problems created by economic development and the excessive use of fossil energy resources. In this work, nitrogen/oxygen (N/O)-doped porous carbon materials for high-performance supercapacitors are fabricated by calcining and activating an organic crosslinked polymer prepared using polyethylene glycol, hydroxypropyl methylcellulose, and 4,4-diphenylmethane diisocyanate. The porous carbon exhibits a large specific surface area (1589 m2·g−1) and high electrochemical performance, thanks to the network structure and rich N/O content in the organic crosslinked polymer. The optimized porous carbon material (COCLP-4.5), obtained by adjusting the raw material ratio of the organic crosslinked polymer, exhibits a high specific capacitance (522 F·g−1 at 0.5 A·g−1), good rate capability (319 F·g−1 at 20 A·g−1), and outstanding stability (83% retention after 5000 cycles) in a three-electrode system. Furthermore, an energy density of 18.04 Wh·kg−1 is obtained at a power density of 200.0 W·kg−1 in a two-electrode system. This study demonstrates that organic crosslinked polymer-derived porous carbon electrode materials have good energy storage potential.

Abstract:Poplar powder was used as a raw material to prepare an electrode material in supercapacitors by doping modification, carbonization, and activation. The lignin-removed poplar powder was mixed with graphene oxide, melamine, and diammonium hydrogen phosphate and then compounded with nickel sulfate. Upon carbonization and activation with KOH, the composite becomes a hierarchical porous carbon material with a pore volume of 0.93 cm3 g–1 and a surface area of 1214.1 m2 g–1. At 0.5 A g–1 current per square meter, the specific capacitance was 407.5 F g–1. In addition, 92.6% of the capacitance remained even after 3000 charging and discharging cycles. There was an outstanding power and energy density of 12.32 W h kg–1 at 499.99 W kg–1 for a symmetric supercapacitor in 6 M KOH. Co-doped porous carbon with nitrogen, phosphorous, and nickel could be a good electrode material for energy storage devices.

Abstract:We demonstrated a novel strategy to prepare nitrogen-doped interpenetrating porous carbon/graphene (NIPCG) networks based on interpenetrating poly(o-phenylenediamine)/N-doped graphene networks. The as-prepared NIPCG shows both high nitrogen content of 13.1 at.% and density of 1.13 g cm−3, and displays ultrahigh specific gravimetric and volumetric capacitances of 673 F g−1 and 760 F cm−3, respectively. Furthermore, the interpenetrating networks structure can afford rapid electron transport, and thus exhibiting excellent conductivity and good cycling stability. In addition, NIPCG assembled symmetric supercapacitor shows ultrahigh energy density of 27.6 Wh kg−1 at a power density of 600 W kg−1. Based on the above advantages, the present work holds a good potential to develop high performance energy storage and conversion devices.

One-step synthesis of polymer based N-doped porous carbon with enriched nitrogen content and its enhanced electrochemical properties in supercapacitors

Abstract:N-doped porous carbon (N-PC) is considered as a promising candidate for electrochemical energy storage. However, the complicated multistep process is the biggest bottleneck. Here, a facile one-step strategy was employed to fabricate the N-doped porous carbon via the co-pyrolysis of urea and poly(acrylic acid- co -maleic acid) sodium salt (PAMS) without the protection of inert gas at 550 °C. When the mass ratio of urea to PAMS is 4:1, the microstructure and electrochemical properties of the as-prepared sample (N-4PC) are obviously improved compared with that of the direct carbonization of PAMS (PC). N-4PC presents salient peculiarities with much more mesopores, higher specific surface area of 181.5 m 2 g −1 far more than PC (23.6 m 2 g −1 ), and its nitrogen content is up to 10.61 at. %. In a three-electrode configuration using 6 M KOH, owing to the synergistic effect of pyridinic N, pyrrolic N and graphitic N atoms, N-4PC shows an outstanding specific capacity of 210 F g −1 far more than that of PC (93 F g −1 ) at 1 A g −1 , and a significant capacity retention rate of 79 % much higher than PC (47 %) at 20 A g −1 . Furthermore, the symmetric supercapacitor fabricated by N-4PC delivers an attractive specific capacitance of 140 F g −1 at 1 A g −1 , and 4.9 Wh kg −1 energy density when the power density is 265 W kg −1 in 6 M KOH. The equipment achieves superior cycle stability with capacity retention of 97 % after 7000 cycles at 1 A g −1 . Additionally, N-4PC also achieves great energy densities of 6.7 Wh kg −1 at the power density of 372.3 W kg −1 in 1 M H 2 SO 4 and 12.5 Wh kg −1 at the power density of 521.5 W kg −1 in 1 M Li 2 SO 4 . The fabricated nitrogen-doped porous carbon material has a great potential application prospect in energy storage equipment.

Abstract:A series of nitrogen-doped carbons were prepared by using biomass waste sawdust as carbon source for supercapacitors. A new nitrogen-doping strategy was proposed to introduce nitrogen element into carbons by using ethylenediamine and carbon as nitrogen source through the polymerization reaction on sawdust under moderate conditions. The raw carbons were further activated with KOH to improve the surface area to increase the electric double layer capacitance while the heteroatoms can improve the pseudocapacitance. The prepared carbons were characterized with different techniques and the electrochemical performances were tested. It was found that the nitrogen-doped carbons activated with a KOH to carbon mass ratio of 5 (NC600-800-5) has the largest specific surface area (1674 m(2)g(-1)) and moderate nitrogen content (2.88 wt%). Compared with the carbon without introduction of nitrogen element (C600-800-5), the capacitive performances of nitrogen-doped carbons were greatly improved, which may be due to the increase of pseudocapacitance and the improvement of wettability introduced by nitrogen element. The largest specific capacitance, 367 F g(-1), was reached at 0.5 A g(-1 )in 6 M KOH solution while the specific capacitance of C600-800-5 is only 279 F g(-1). After 10,000 cycles at 3 A g(-1), the specific capacitance can keep 96.7% of the initial value, suggesting the excellent cycling performance. The energy density can reach 8.7 Wh Kg(-1) at a power density of 251.6 W kg(-1). Thus, it is proved that the nitrogendoping strategy is effective and the introduction of nitrogen element to carbons is particularly important to the improvement of the electrochemical performances.
Tuning Nitrogen Species in Two‐Dimensional Carbon through Pore Structure Change for High Supercapacitor Performance

Abstract:Carbonaceous materials have long been a key component of supercapacitor energy storage systems, and exploring nitrogen atom doping and its role is currently the focus of carbon‐based electrode development. However, achieving a high proportion of pyridinic‐N (active N) in N doped carbon is still a big challenge. Here, by introducing a triblock copolymer F127 into the phenolic resin, the pore structure of the two‐dimensional carbon material is successfully adjusted, thereby increasing the probability of generation of active nitrogen. We found that this two‐dimensional porous structure is beneficial to the formation of pyridine‐N. Through the change of pore structure, the ratio of pyridine‐N to the total N was further increased by 13.9%. Therefore, it provides a large specific capacitance (220 F g−1), excellent cycle stability (93.6%) and high rate performance (71.2%) in the alkaline KOH electrolyte. To further increase the energy density, we constructed an symmetrical supercapacitor device using an ionic liquid electrolyte (equal amount of 1‐ethyl‐3‐methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate and acetonitrile). As a result, since the electrolyte has a voltage window of up to 3V, the energy density is as high as 37.5 Wh kg‒1. This superior performance indicates that adjusting the ratio of pyridine‐N provides a promising method for preparing excellent N‐doped carbon materials for energy storage systems.

Because of the high affinity between Cu(OH)(2) and GG, gel fibers with high yield and good size distribution can be obtained; after carbonization and pickling, the N-doping porous carbon@Cu composite fiber (NPCF@Cu), with high specific surface area, rich porous structure, and uniform distributed Cu nanoparticles, has been successfully prepared. Results show that the NPCF@Cu-10 exhibits high specific capacitance (334.6 F g(-1) at 2 A g(-1)) and excellent rate capability (62.7% capacity retention at 50 A g(-1) versus that of 2 A g(-1)). Furthermore, its superior electrochemical performance in two-electrode configuration demonstrates that the NPCF@Cu can be utilized as a promising electrode material for supercapacitor. Abstract:Supercapacitors are widely concerned because of their fast charging and discharging speed, low cost and long operation time. N-doped porous hollow carbon nanotubes (N-PHCN) are widely used as electrode materials for supercapacitors because of their proper length–diameter ratio, high specific surface area from porous structures, good conductivity and high chemical stability. Herein, an in situ activation method for preparing N-PHCN with manganese dioxide nanorods as the core and resorcinol–formaldehyde resin as the carbon precursor was proposed by using the adsorption of KNO 3 in resin and its activation on carbon skeleton. Different from the previous activation strategies of porous carbon, this KNO 3 in situ activation method can provide regular morphology for carbon materials. In addition, an appropriate amount of activator can lead to a high specific surface area, which ensures its high performance as a supercapacitor for energy storage. The optimized N-PHCN shows a maximum specific surface area of 1312.9 m 2 g −1 with a high specific capacitance of 283 F g −1 at a current density of 0.5 A g −1 , an energy density of 12.5 Wh kg −1 at a power density of 247.9 W kg −1 and excellent cycle ability with capacitance retention rate of 94.7% after 10,000 cycles.

Abstract:Conducting polymers with conjugated structure and heteroatoms are attractive precursors to produce porous carbons. Whereas the capacitive performance of conducting polymer derived carbons is yet to be improved due to its undesirable structure and relatively low graphitization level. Herein, FeCl 3 is employed as both oxidant and catalyst, while small molecule biomass peach gum derivatives are utilized as structure directing agent to manipulate the structure of poly( o -phenylenediamine) derived N-doped porous carbon. The as-prepared NPC PG/P o PD exhibits a large specific surface area of 887.9 m 2 g −1 with unique directional oriented channel structure and a high N-doping level of 10.3 at.%. The NPC PG/P o PD possesses large specific capacitance of 442.1 F g −1 at 0.5 A g −1 and excellent rate capability of 76 % in a current density range of 0.5–20 A g −1 . The NPC PG/P o PD assembled symmetric supercapacitor shows superior energy density of 24.5 Wh kg −1 at a power density of 325 W kg −1 . The strategy of utilizing small molecule biomass as structure directing agent and FeCl 3 as catalyst to manipulate the structure of conducting polymer-derived porous carbons paves new avenue for carbon engineering.

Abstract:We demonstrate a facile and effective approach to prepare nitrogen/phosphorus co-doped porous carbon materials by means of carbonizing cyclomatrix polyphosphazene, which is synthesized by a polycondensation reaction of p-phenylenediamine and hexachlorocyclotriphosphazene. The samples prepared at different carbonization temperatures have a hierarchical porous structure, which provides channels for the transport and storage of electrons and ions. In addition, the specific surface area and the degree of graphitization increase with increasing carbonization temperature, while the content of nitrogen and phosphorus atoms decreases with the increasing carbonization temperature. The sample prepared at 1000 degrees C has the largest specific surface area of 1785 m(2) g(-1). The cyclic voltammetry and galvanostatic charge-discharge tests show that the sample prepared at 900 degrees C (NP-MCP-900) has the highest capacitance, 323 F g(-1), at a current density of 1 A g(-1), together with excellent rate performance and cycle stability.
