Abstract:For the catalytic reaction, rate-determining step (RDS) would not permanently locate at one elementary step. It might be modified by different reaction parameters, e.g. temperature, pressure, local environment of the active species etc. However, there is few such example presented. Here, we show a systematic mechanistic study on the CO2 hydrogenation over Cu/ZnO catalyst and find that the change of H-2 pressure triggers the RDS variation, in which with H-2 partial pressure increasing, the active sites might change from surface sites of Cu to the perimeter sites, and directly lead to the variation of the RDS from CO2 adsorption ([H-2]: 0.15 MPa-0.7 MPa) to HCOO# (the active site over ZnO was represented as "#" while the active site over Cu was represented as "*") hydrogenation elementary step ([H-2]: >0.7 MPa). That was further supported by a linear correlation between hydrogenation pressure and apparent activation energy of CO2 hydrogenation. Besides, the influence of water was further investigated based the Langmuir-Hinshelwood model established. (C) 2022 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.
