Abstract:Epoxy resin (ER) is widely used as insulation and support mat erial in the field of high-voltage energy transmission and pulse d power system. To enhance the surface electric withstanding s trength of ER, TiN is coated by plasma-enhanced magnetron sputtering in a coating system. A highly purified (99.99%) TiN compound target is chosen as a sputtering source; N2 (purity: 99.999%) is introduced as reactive gas. Sputtering times are set as 228s and 22s. The flashover characteristics, secondary e lectron emission (SEE) characteristics and surface charge accu mulation behaviors of coated ER samples are investigated. TiN coating can significantly improve the flashover withstanding strengths of ER samples. When the sputtering time is 22s, the first breakdown voltage $U_{fb}$, conditioned voltage $U_{co}$ and hold-off voltage $U_{ho}$ increase by 19.14%, 39.43% and 46.26%; when the sputtering time increases to 228s, the $U_{fb},\ U_{co}$ and $U_{ho}$ furtherly increase by 61.75%, 49.82% and 70.07% compared with virgin samples. TiN coatings also suppress secondary electron emission and lower the surface secondary electron yield (SEY). After 22s and 228s sputtering, the maximum SEY decreases by 16.97% and 20.21% compared with that of the virgin sample. Furthermore, the surface charge accumulation on coating ER samples is remarkably prohibited and the maximum surface charge density decreases from 77.84 pC/mm2 to 4.27 pC/mm2. In summary, SEE is suppressed, both the amplitude and the range of surface charge accumulation are reduced and thus the surface flashover strength is promoted. In conclusion, plasma-enhanced magnetron sputtering is an effective method to enha nce the flashover strength of insulating materials like ER. It can promote the overall performance of the insulation system and the development of high-voltage electrical equipment.
