Abstract:The pulsating inflow, as well as corrugated channel, enhances heat transfer due to the periodical destruction of flow and thermal boundary layers. Thus, the coupled effects of inflow pulsating parameters and design parameters of corrugated channel on heat transfer enhancement are needed to be revealed to obtain the favorable augmented performance. In this work, the turbulent flow and heat transfer characteristics in the arc-shaped corrugated channel, with protrusion height of corrugated structure h = 0.94-1.66 mm, amplitude of sinusoidal inlet velocity oscillation A = 0.1-0.9, and frequency of sinusoidal inlet velocity f =1-50 Hz were studied. Through independent study of the above variables, their respective effects on flow resistance, heat transfer, and thermal performance were revealed. Furthermore, the coupling effect caused by the simultaneous variations of the above variables and the parameter combination corresponding to the best thermal performance were still unclear. Therefore, the thermal performance (TP) was further optimized by means of the intelligent algorithm-based fast optimization method. The results demonstrate that the optimized arc-shaped corrugated channel with pulsating flow can obtained a significant enhancement in heat transfer within an acceptable pressure loss increase compared with the flat channel. The maximum thermal performance increment is 31.7% at Re = 10,000. The dimensionless frequency (Strouhal number) corresponding to the best thermal performance is always between 0.4-0.5 at studied Reynolds numbers. Furthermore, the optimal protrusion height and oscillation frequency gradually increase with the Reynolds number, and the optimal oscillation amplitude always takes the maximum value of the given range.
