Abstract:The application of a layered K0.5MnO2 cathode in potassium-ion batteries is limited by its poor cycling performance when charged above 4.0 V (vs K+/K), and the underlying mechanism for this electrochemical instability is still unclear. Here, it is discovered that ethylene carbonate (EC) will intercalate into the depotassiated K0.5MnO2, causing the exfoliation of the layered compound and the capacity decay under high charge cutoff voltage. When the carbonates are replaced with a nonflammable phosphate, the electrochemical performance of K0.5MnO2 above 4.0 V (vs K+/K) is significantly enhanced with a large reversible capacity (120 mAh g(-1)) and high capacity retention of 84% after 400 cycles. This phosphate-based electrolyte also demonstrates good compatibility with the commercial graphite anode, enabling the encouraging electrochemical performance of the K0.5MnO2 vertical bar graphite fullcell. The present study provides new insights on further exploration of other electrolytes to advance the emerging low-cost and high-performance potassium-ion batteries.

Abstract:Localized high-concentration electrolyte is widely acknowledged as a cutting-edge electrolyte for the lithium metal anode. However, the high fluorine content, either from high-concentration salts or from highly fluorinated diluents, results in significantly higher production costs and an increased environmental burden. Here, we have developed a novel electrolyte termed "Localized Medium-Concentration Electrolyte" (LMCE) to effectively address these issues. This LMCE is designed and produced by diluting a medium concentration (0.5 M – 1.5 M) electrolyte which is incompatible with lithium metal anode before diluting. It has ultralow concentration (0.1 M) and demonstrates remarkable compatibility with lithium metal anode. Surprisingly, our LMCE, despite having an ultralow concentration (0.1 M), exhibits excellent kinetics in Li/Cu, Li/Li, LiFePO4/Li, and NCM811/Li batteries. Additionally, LMCE effectively inhibits the corrosion of the Al current collector caused by LiTFSI salt under high voltage (> 4 V) conditions. This groundbreaking LMCE design transforms the seemingly "incompatible" into the "compatible", opening up new avenues for exploring various electrolyte formulations, including all liquid electrolyte-based batteries.

Abstract:Localized high-concentration electrolytes (LHCEs) have unique solvation structures that do not affect the original salt–solvent coordination from highly concentrated electrolytes. LHCEs enable a wide electrochemical voltage window and mitigate the extensive dendritic growth of metallic anodes. However, in K metal batteries, LHCE undergoes undesirable side reactions because of potasside (K – ), triggering aggressive chemistry with a diluent, represented as hydrofluoroethers (HFEs), eventually resulting in poor cycle life. In this study, 1, 3, 5-trifluorobenzene (TFB) was introduced as a functional additive to prevent the parasitic K – reaction. The three symmetrically substituted fluorines prevented TFB from disrupting the as-formed solvation structure of LHCE located in the outer sphere. This characteristic increases the reaction energy barrier between K – and HFE, suppressing the deterioration of the metal anode by adding only 3 wt.% of TFB in LHCE. Moreover, TFB preferentially decomposes at each electrode because of its molecular energy level and increases the reversibility of the cell, reducing unnecessary consumption of electrolytes with a stable interface. This study discusses a novel method to prevent the K – reaction at the electrolyte level and the utilization of LHCE in K batteries to pursue higher energy densities, sustaining the advantage of using a metal anode.

Abstract:Although metallic potassium or graphite anode with low redox potentials are desirable for potassium-ion batteries (PIBs), the severe capacity decay caused by consecutive reduction reactions on the aggressively reactive anode surface is inevitable because of the scarcity of an effective passivation layer. Additionally, the development of PIBs faces potential safety hazards due to the usage of reactive anodes with flammable electrolytes. Herein, a fire-retardant localized high-concentration electrolyte (LHCE) is formulated by adding a low-polarity co-solvent of highly fluorinated ether into the concentrated potassium bis(fluorosulfonyl)imide/trimethyl phosphate. A unique electrolyte solvation environment with the enhanced anion-cation interaction in an LHCE facilitates a durable anion-derived solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) with self-accelerated interfacial kinetics and minimizes the SEI dissolution compared to the conventional carbonate-based electrolyte. Consequently, the unmodified Al substrate could sustain stable potassium metal cycling above 3400 h (over 800 cycles) with high reversibility (98%), and the graphite anode retains prolonged cyclic stability (over 300 cycles) with a high reversible capacity (257.6 mAh g −1 ) and capacity retention (92.6 % at 0.2 C). Meanwhile, Al corrosion at high voltage is significantly suppressed, and the electrochemical window is extended due to less free solvents in an LHCE, enabling good electrolyte compatibility with high-voltage cathodes. Coupling non-flammable solvents and the concept of LHCE could facilitate a better understanding of electrolyte chemistry and offer more opportunities to use K or graphite anode for all Al substrate-based PIBs highlighted with high performance and superb safety.

Abstract:The resourceful and inexpensive red phosphorus has emerged as a promising anode material of potassium-ion batteries(PIBs)for its large theoretical capacities and low redox potentials in the multi-electron alloying/dealloying reactions,yet chronically suffering from the huge volume expansion/shrink-age with a sluggish reaction kinetics and an unsatisfactory interfacial stability against volatile elec-trolytes.Herein,we systematically developed a series of localized high-concentration electrolytes(LHCE)through diluting high-concentration ether electrolytes with a non-solvating fluorinated ether to regulate the formation/evolution of solid electrolyte interphases(SEI)on phosphorus/carbon(P/C)anodes for PIBs.Benefitting from the improved mechanical strength and structural stability of a robust/uniform SEI thin layer derived from a composition-optimized LHCE featured with a unique solvation structure and a superior K+migration capability,the P/C anode with noticeable pseudocapacitive behaviors could achieve a large reversible capacity of 760 mA h g-1 at 100 mA g-1,a remarkable capacity retention rate of 92.6％over 200 cycles at 800 mA g-1,and an exceptional rate capability of 334 mA h g-1 at 8000 mA g-1.Critically,a suppressed reduction of ether solvents with a preferential decomposition of potassium salts in anion-derived interfacial reactions on P/C anode for LHCE could enable a rational con-struction of an outer organic-rich and inner inorganic-dominant SEI thin film with remarkable mechan-ical strength/flexibility to buffer huge volume variations and abundant K+diffusion channels to accelerate reaction kinetics.Additionally,the highly reversible/durable full PIBs coupling P/C anodes with annealed organic cathodes further verified an excellent practical applicability of LHCE.This encouraging work on electrolytes regulating SEI formation/evolution would advance the development of P/C anodes for high-performance PIBs.

Abstract:Potassium metal battery is a promising alternative to Li-ion battery for large-scale energy storage due to the abundant potassium resources and high energy density. However, it suffers from rapid capacity fading and safety issues due to the uncontrolled dendrite growth. Herein, we design a fluorine-free ultra-low concentration electrolyte (ULCE) with the super bulky [BPh 4 ] − anions for stable potassium metal battery. In this special electrolyte, the migration rate of K + in the electrolyte is about six times faster than that of the [BPh 4 ] − anions because of the super bulky structure of the [BPh 4 ] − anions, thus resulting in a high K + transference number of 0.76. This high transference number can effectively make up for the deficiency of K + in ULCE for ensuring the normal operation of the potassium metal battery. In addition, the improved transference number can also promote the uniform distribution of K + flux on the surface of the K metal anode, resulting in uniform K deposition. As a result, this electrolyte achieves a high K plating/stripping Coulombic efficiency of 92.6% over 200 cycles and a stable discharging/charging for 100 cycles under the full battery configuration (K used as the anode and perylene-3,4,9,10-tetracarboxylic dianhydride used as the cathode).

Abstract:An emerging quasi‐localized high‐concentration electrolyte is proposed to construct stable interphase layers on both the cathode and anode. The assembled high‐voltage lithium metal batteries stably operate under the whole climate range with limited Li consumption, revealing a promising strategy to achieve practical high‐energy secondary battery systems. The poor compatibility with Li metal and electrolyte oxidation stability preclude the utilization of commercial ester‐based electrolytes for high‐voltage lithium metal batteries. This work proposes a quasi‐localized high‐concentration electrolyte (q‐LHCE) by partially replacing solvents in conventional LiPF6 based carbonated electrolyte with fluorinated analogs (fluoroethylene carbonate (FEC), 2,2,2‐trifluoroethyl methyl carbonate (FEMC)) with weakly‐solvating ability. The q‐LHCE enables the formation of an anion‐rich solvation sheath, which functions like LHCE but differs in the partial participation of weakly‐solvating cosolvent in the solvation structure. With this optimized electrolyte, inorganic‐dominated solid electrolyte interphases are achieved on both the cathode and anode, leading to uniform Li deposition, suppressed electrolyte decomposition and cathode deterioration. Consequently, q‐LHCE supports stable cycling of Li | LiCoO2 (≈3.5 mAh cm−2) cells at 4.5 V under the whole climate range (from −20 to 45 °C) with limited Li consumption. A practical ampere‐hour level graphite | LiCoO2 pouch cell at 4.5 V and aggressive Li | LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4 cell at 5.0 V with excellent capacity retention further reveals the effectiveness of q‐LHCE. The refinement of old‐fashioned carbonate electrolytes provides new perspectives toward practical high‐voltage battery systems.

Abstract:Abstract Potassium metal batteries coupling with high‐voltage manganese hexacyanoferrate (MnHCF) cathodes are promising candidates for energy storage devices. Ethers are the primary electrolyte solvent candidates for reversible potassium metal anodes, but their poor oxidative stability at high voltage restricts the application. Taking advantage of the steric hindrance, a dilute (1 m ) non‐fluorinated ether with extended alkyl groups is designed to reduce the solvation capability to K ions, thus suppressing the solvent decomposition and tailoring the interphase composition on both cathode and anode sides. The accompanying high viscosity associated with the long alkyl groups can be readily resolved by incorporating an S‐containing additive, which further boosts the oxidative stability to 4.6 V. Furthermore, the additive contributes to the S‐rich organic species among the interphases that inhibit the metal dissolution of the cathode and induce the homogenous K deposition through promoted kinetics. Benefiting from the stable interphases and restricted side reactions, the dilute non‐fluorinated ether‐based electrolyte enables the stable cycling of MnHCF||K cell for over 200 cycles with a high Coulombic efficiency of over 99.4% under a negative/positive capacity ratio of 4.

Abstract:Electrolyte design is essential for stabilizing lithium metal anodes and localized high-concentration electrolyte (LHCE) is a promising one. However, the state-of-the-art LHCE remains insufficient to ensure long-cycling lithium metal anodes. Herein, regulating the solvation structure of lithium ions in LHCE by weakening the solvating power of diluents is proposed for improving LHCE performance. A diluent, 1,1,2,2,3,3,4,4-octafluoro-5-(1,1,2,2-tetrafluoroethoxy) pentane (OFE), with weaker solvating power is introduced to increase the proportion of aggregates (an anion interacts with more than two lithium ions, AGG-n) in electrolyte compared with the commonly used 1,1,2,2-tetrafluoroethyl-2,2,3,3-tetrafluoropropyl ether (TTE). The decomposition of AGG-n in OFE-based LHCE intensifies the formation of anion-derived solid electrolyte interphase and improves the uniformity of lithium deposition. Lithium metal batteries with OFE-based LHCE deliver a superior lifespan of 190 cycles compared with 90 cycles of TTE-based LHCE under demanding conditions. Furthermore, a pouch cell with OFE-based LHCE delivers a specific energy of 417 Wh/kg and undergoes 49 cycles. This work provides guidance for designing high-performance electrolytes for lithium metal batteries.

Abstract:The key to realize long life high energy density lithium batteries is to exploit functional electrolytes capable of stabilizing both high voltage cathode and lithium anode. The emergence of localized high-concentration electrolytes (LHCEs) shows great promise for ameliorating the above-mentioned interfacial issues. In this work, a lithium difluoro(oxalate)borate (LiDFOB) based nonflammable dual-anion LHCE is designed and prepared. Dissolving in the mixture of trimethyl phosphate (TMP) /1,1,2,2-tetrafluoroethyl-2,2,3,3-tetrafluoropropylether (D2), the continuously consumption of LiDFOB is suppressed by simply introducing lithium nitrate (LiNO3). Meantime, as most of the TMP molecular are coordinate with Li+, the electrolyte does not show incompatibility issue between neither metal lithium nor graphite anode. Therefore, it demonstrates excellent capability in stabilizing the interface of Ni rich cathode and regulating lithium deposition morphology. The Li||LiNi0.87Co0.08Mn0.05O2 (NCM87) batteries exhibit high capacity retention of more than 90% after 200 cycles even under the high cut-off voltage of 4.5 V, 1 C rate. This study offers a prospective method to develop safe electrolytes suitable for high voltage applications, thus providing higher energy densities.

Abstract:To enable next-generation high-energy-density lithium (Li)-metal batteries (LMBs), an electrolyte that has simultaneous high Li-metal Coulombic efficiency (CE) and high anodic stability on cathodes is of significant importance. Sulfones are known for strong resistance against oxidation, yet their application in LMBs is restricted because of their poor compatibility with Li-metal anodes, high viscosity, and poor wettability. Here, we demonstrate that a high Li CE over 98% can be achieved in concentrated sulfone-based electrolytes. Furthermore, the viscosity and wettability issues of sulfones are resolved by the addition of a fluorinated ether, 1,1,2,2-tetrafluoroethyl-2,2,3,3-tetrafluoropropyl ether, to form a localized high-concentration electrolyte (LHCE), which not only provides further improvement in Li CE (98.8%) but also remains anodically stable with high-voltage cathodes, suppresses Al corrosion, and enables LMBs to operate in a wide temperature range. As a result, significantly improved cycling performance of LMBs has been realized with sulfone-based LHCE.

Abstract:We report a carbonate-based localized high-concentration electrolyte (LHCE) with a fluorinated ether as a diluent for 4-V class lithium metal batteries (LMBs), which enables dendrite-free Li deposition with a high Li Coulombic efficiency (∼98.5%) and much better cycling stability for Li metal anodes than previously reported dimethyl carbonate-based LHCEs at lean electrolyte conditions. This electrolyte consists of 1.2 M lithium bis(fluorosulfonyl)imide (LiFSI) in a cosolvent mixture of ethylene carbonate (EC)/ethyl methyl carbonate (EMC) with bis(2,2,2-trifluoroethyl) ether (BTFE) as the diluent and 0.15 M lithium difluoro(oxalate)borate (LiDFOB) as an additive. A Li||LiNi1/3Mn1/3Co1/3O2 battery with a high areal loading of 3.8 mAh cm–2 maintains 84% of its initial capacity after 100 cycles. The enhanced stability can be attributed to the robust solid–electrolyte interface (SEI) layer formed on the Li metal anode, arising from the preferential decomposition of LiDFOB salt and EC solvent molecules.

Abstract:Localized high concentrations electrolyte (LHCE) has garnered significant attention as an emerging electrolyte candidate for Li-metal batteries. LHCE is formed by diluting a high concentration electrolyte (usually close to saturation) with a non-solvating solvent that has a low donor number. We propose a modified concept of LHCE, called "localized electrolyte (LE)," optimized for Li-ion batteries with a graphite anode and Ni-rich cathode. In LE, the Li salt concentration is optimized to be only 1-2 M in solvating solvents, resulting in an overall concentration of 0.5-1 M, which reduces cost and supports fast ion transport. The non-flammable LE also has excellent wettability, which facilitates fasting charging. We also demonstrated that with the addition of 2 wt.% vinylene carbonate into 0.7 M LE, the Li-ion cell retains 80.3% of its initial capacity after 700 cycles of testing in about 4 months. Overall, LE represents a promising and cost-effective solution for improving the performance and safety of Li-ion batteries.

Abstract:Rechargeable potassium (K) metal batteries (PMBs) remain deeply challenged by the lack of suitable electrolytes that are stable against both highly reactive K anodes and 4 V-class cathodes. Despite their good reductive stability with K metal, classic potassium bis(fluorosulfonyl)amide (KFSI)-based ether electrolytes are typically used only in <4.0 V PMBs due to their limited oxidation stability. Herein, a potassium nitrate (KNO3)-containing ether electrolyte, at a moderate KFSI concentration (2.3 M) rather than a high concentration (normally, >3 M), is reported for the first time to be used in 4 V-class PMBs. A stable N/F-rich solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) is formed, enabling dense and uniform K deposition, especially under high current density. Remarkably, the PMBs with Prussian blue cathode exhibits an unprecedented cycle life (1000 cycles, 122 days). This work provides new perspectives of electrolyte design for 4 V-class PMBs.
