Abstract:Catalytic activity is affected by surface morphology, and specific surfaces display greater activity than others. A key challenge is to define synthetic strategies to enhance the expression of more active surfaces and to maintain their stability during the lifespan of the catalyst. In this work, we outline an ab initio approach, based on density functional theory, to predict surface composition and particle morphology as a function of environmental conditions, and we apply this to CeO 2 nanoparticles in the presence of co-adsorbed H 2 O and CO 2 as an industrially relevant test case. We find that dissociative adsorption of both molecules is generally the most favourable, and that the presence of H 2 O can stabilise co-adsorbed CO 2 . We show that changes in adsorption strength with temperature and adsorbate partial pressure lead to significant changes in surface stability, and in particular that co-adsorption of H 2 O and CO 2 stabilizes the {100} and {110} surfaces over the {111}. Based on the changes in surface free energy induced by the adsorbed species, we predict that cuboidal nanoparticles are favoured in the presence of co-adsorbed H 2 O and CO 2 , suggesting that cuboidal particles should experience a lower thermodynamic driving force to reconstruct and thus be more stable as catalysts for process involving these species.

Abstract:Despite extensive studies of deposited carbon in Fischer–Tropsch synthesis (FTS), an atomic-level comprehension of the effect of carbon on the morphology of cobalt-based FTS catalysts remains elusive. The adsorption configurations of carbon atoms on different crystal facets of hexagonal close-packed (hcp) Co nanoparticles were studied using density functional theory (DFT) calculations to explore the interaction mechanism between C and Co surfaces. The weaker adsorption strength of C atoms on Co(0001), Co(10-10), and Co(11-20) surfaces accounted for lower diffusion energy, leading to the facile formation of C dimers. Electronic property analysis shows that more electrons are transferred from Co surfaces to C atoms on corrugated facets than on flat facets. The deposition of carbon atoms on Co nanoparticles affects surface energy by forming strong Co-C bonds, which causes the system to reach a more energetically favorable morphology with an increased proportion of exposed Co(10-12) and Co(11-20) areas as the carbon content increases slightly. This transformation in morphology implies that C deposition plays a crucial role in determining the facet proportion and stability of exposed Co surfaces, contributing to the optimization of cobalt-based catalysts with improved performance.

Abstract:Nonmetal heteroatom incorporation into the lattice of host materials is a common way to regulate the surface electronic structure of electrocatalysts to boost their electrocatalytic performance. However, the heteroatom incorporation will inevitably trigger lattice strain and vacancy, which may lead to large changes in the structure of host materials. In this situation, the reconstruction of doped catalysts easily occurs during the catalytic process under harsh alkaline media, which hinders understanding the structure–activity correlation between catalysts and catalytic performance. Herein, taking cobalt nitride as an example, it is promulgated that a low‐temperature selenium sublimation strategy can effectively optimize the surface electronic structure in Co4N nanowire arrays with no significant change of bulk phase structure. Benefiting from surface selenium modification, the optimized SeCo4N nanowire arrays exhibit a 6.5 times enhancement of catalytic activity with structural phase stability for hydrogen evolution reaction in basic media. These findings may provide a new concept to design stable structured catalysts for energy‐related applications.

Abstract:Small gas molecules acting as good capping agents play important roles in controlling the morphologies and surface structures of metal nanocrystals.In the present work,the thermodynamic and kinetic roles of H2 molecules in the morphology of Co nanocrystals were systematically studied by density functional theory (DFT).The Gibbs surface free energies of Co(100),Co(110),and Co(111) at different hydrogen surface coverages were determined by ab initio thermodynamics.The phase diagram of stable H coverage on each plane was obtained and morphology evolution of the Co nanocrystals with various surface hydrogen coverages was predicted by the Wulff construction.Addition of H2 changes the facet stability,generating diverse morphological Co nuclei.The kinetic role of H2 in adatom Co surface diffusion at different H coverages was investigated by DFT.The results suggest that surface H hinders Co surface diffusions,except for Co(100) at 0.56 monolayer coverage.The projected density of states gives deeper insight into the electronic structures of Co adatoms with addition of the surface H atoms,which affect its surface diffusion ability.

Abstract:A dramatic morphology evolution from cobalt nanoparticles to one-dimensional cobalt nanochains have been found by the introduction of CO in the synthesis process. The competitive adsorption between oleylamine (OAm) and CO molecules on cobalt surface was analyzed by DFT calculations. The competitive adsorption provides an effective way to regulate the surface properties of cobalt nanoaparticles, thus adjusting the interactions between cobalt nanoparticles and leading the self-assembly formation of cobalt nanochains. The novel one-dimensional cobalt nanochains show superior activity for CO hydrogenation, thus providing a powerful strategy for the surface and morphology controlled synthesis of catalyst nanomaterials assisted by small molecules.

Abstract:The morphology of nanoparticles (NPs) is crucial for determining their catalytic performance. The dramatic changes in the morphology of metal NPs during reactions observed in many in situ experiments pose great challenges for the identification of the geometry for optimal catalytic activities, which arouses the controversial understanding of the reaction mechanism. In this work, taking CO oxidation as a model reaction, we coupled a multiscale structure reconstruction model with kinetic Monte Carlo simulations to study the catalytic performance of the Pt NPs with changing morphology and reaction conditions. Through the quantitative analysis of contour plots for turnover frequencies, we show that the NPs with more well-coordinated sites exhibit optimal activity under CO-rich conditions at higher temperatures, while the reactivity of NPs with more low-coordination sites is optimal under O2-rich conditions at lower temperatures. Further analysis indicates that the competitive adsorption of CO and O2 plays the key role, in which the structure with optimal activity has a closer CO and O coverage. This work not only reconciles the controversy of the active geometry in the experiments, but offers an efficient method to guide the rational design of high-performance catalysts.

Abstract:AbstractNanocrystal (NC) morphology, which decides the number of active sites and catalytic efficiency, is strongly determined by the gases involved in synthesis, treatment, and reaction. Myriad investigations have been performed to understand the morphological response to the involved gases. However, most prior work is limited to low pressures, which is far beyond realistic conditions. A dynamic morphological evolution of palladium–copper (PdCu) NC within a nanoreactor is reported, with atmospheric pressure hydrogen at the atomic scale. In situ transmission electron microscopy (TEM) videos reveal that spherical PdCu particles transform into truncated cubes at high hydrogen pressure. First principles calculations demonstrate that the surface energies decline with hydrogen pressure, with a new order of γH‐001<γH‐110<γH‐111 at 1 bar. A comprehensive Wulff construction based on the corrected surface energies is perfectly consistent with the experiments. The work provides a microscopic insight into NC behaviors at realistic gas pressure and is promising for the shaping of nanocatalysts by gas‐assisted treatments.
Theoretical Insights into the Structure and Activity of Cobalt Modulated by Surface and Subsurface Carbon in Operando Conditions

Abstract:To understand the effect of the in situ carbon deposition and permeation process on cobalt-catalyzed heterogeneous reactions, the thermodynamics and kinetics of the carburization process of ten different surfaces of hexagonal close-packed (hcp) and face-centered cubic (fcc) Co and the resulting evolution of crystalline morphology, electronic structure, and barriers of typical surface reactions are explored theoretically using density functional theory (DFT) and atomistic thermodynamics methods. The exposed facets of hcp-Co and fcc-Co crystallites showed distinct thermodynamic and kinetic sensitivity to the permeation of carbon into subsurface positions. The formation of surface carbides depends on both the working condition and the type of crystalline facets. Two types of carbon permeation mechanisms were discovered with distinct diffusion paths and barriers. The morphology of cobalt catalysts was found to be greatly modulated by carbon deposition under operando conditions, favoring (0001) of the hcp phase and (111) of the fcc phase at high carbon chemical potentials. As the carbon coverage increases, the d-band centers of the carburized Co surface approach the values of bulk cobalt carbides. Evaluation of a representative Fischer-Tropsch side reaction (CH3 -H coupling in methane formation) shows that the barrier is highly influenced by the degree of carbide formation on the cobalt surfaces. Our study indicates that it is crucial to consider the chemical potential of gas-phase carbon to understand the surface carbon adsorption and permeation phenomenon on the skin layer of the catalyst, the overall cobalt morphology, and the observed catalytic performance of cobalt catalysts in syngas conversion.

Abstract:Typically, varying pretreatment conditions probably results in the different catalytic performances for the bimetallic catalysts, and this originates from the surface evolution of catalysts during catalytic process. Hence, it is crucial to correlate surface chemistry (e.g., composition, chemical valence, etc.) of bimetallic nanocatalysts with their corresponding performances upon different pretreatments for the fundamental understanding of catalysis. Herein, compositionvaried (100) facet terminated Pd-Rh nanocubes (NCs) with the similar shape and sizes were prepared by a facile one-pot hydrothermal method to exclude the possible size and shape effect. Surface composition and valence state of these Pd 0.8 Rh 0.2 , Pd 0.6 Rh 0.4 , and Pd 0.2 Rh 0.8 NCs were tracked under different reaction conditions and during catalysis using a homebuilt ambient pressure X-ray photoelectron spectrometer (APXPS). The correlation of active surface of Pd-Rh NCs and their corresponding catalytic performance was established.
Phase- and morphology-controlled synthesis of cobalt sulfide nanocrystals and comparison of their catalytic activities for hydrogen evolution

Abstract:Colalt sulfide nanocrystals (NCs), including dandelion-like Co9S8 and sphere-like Co3S4, have been synthesized via a thermal decomposition approach using cobalt acetylacetonate as the cobalt source, 1-dodecanethiol as the sulfur source and oleic acid or oleylamine as the high boiling organic solvent. It is found that the molar ratio of the Co:S precursor and the species of solvent play an important role in the control of phase and morphology of cobalt sulfide nanostructures. The phase structure and morphology of the as-synthesized nickel sulfide NCs are characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning electron microscope (SEM), energy dispersive spectrum (EDS) mapping, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and N-2 adsorption-desorption. Then we further compare the electrocatalytic activity and stability of as-synthesized cobalt sulfide NCs for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). The results show that sphere-like Co3S4 exhibits better electrocatalytic activity than the dandelion-like Co9S8 NCs for HER, which can be attributed to the difference of phase structure and morphology. The sphere-like Co3S4 NCs have large surface area and high electrical conductivity, both are beneficial to enhance the catalytic activity. This study indicates that the crystalline phase structure and morphology of cobalt sulfide NCs are important for designing HER electrocatalysts with high efficiency and good stability. Abstract:As a prerequisite elementary step, the reduction of cobalt (Co) oxides to form metallic Co is essential to display activity in heterogeneous catalysis. Nevertheless, the intrinsic principle of phase and morphology evolution for Co oxides and formation mechanism of the active Co site remains unclear. Here, we resolve this decades-long question by using a state-of-the-art in situ transmission electron microscopy (TEM) to elucidate the multi-role of initial crystalline phase and size of Co oxide in modulation of reduction rate, phase and morphology evolution under H 2 atmosphere, by excluding the possible interference from promoter and support. We anticipate that this study enriches current understanding on the surface structure and morphology evolution of Co oxides, and provide reference for rational design of Co-based catalytic material as well as its pretreatment protocol.

Abstract:When carbon-containing species are involved in reactions catalyzed by transition metals at high temperature, the diffusion of carbon on or in catalysts dramatically influences the catalytic performance. Acquiring information on the carbon-diffusioninvolved evolution of catalysts at the atomic level is crucial for understanding the reaction mechanism yet also challenging. For the chemical vapor deposition process of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs), we recorded in situ the catalyst state (solid and molten) composition as well as near-surface structural and chemical evolution at the cobalt catalyst-tube interface with carbon permeation using aberration-corrected environmental transmission electron microscopy and synchrotron X-ray absorption spectroscopy. The nucleation of SWCNTs was linked with an alternating dissolving and precipitating cycle of carbon in catalysts close to the nucleation site. Understanding the dynamics of carbon atoms in catalysts brings deeper insight into the growth mechanism of SWCNTs and facilitates inferring mechanisms of other reactions. The methodologies developed here will find broad applications in studying catalytic and other processes. [GRAPHICS] .

Abstract:Since catalytic performance of platinum-metal (Pt-M) nanoparticles is primarily determined by the chemical and structural configurations of the outermost atomic layers, detailed knowledge of the distribution of Pt and M surface atoms is crucial for the design of Pt-M electrocatalysts with optimum activity. Further, an understanding of how the surface composition and structure of electrocatalysts may be controlled by external means is useful for their efficient production. Here, we report our study of surface composition and the dynamics involved in facet-dependent oxidation of equilibrium-shaped Pt3Co nanoparticles in an initially disordered state via in situ transmission electron microscopy and density functional calculations. In brief, using our advanced in situ gas cell technique, evolution of the surface of the Pt3Co nanoparticles was monitored at the atomic scale during their exposure to an oxygen atmosphere at elevated temperature, and it was found that Co segregation and oxidation take place on {111} surfaces but not on {100} surfaces.
Hydrothermal Hydrolyzation-Driven Topological Transformation of Ni-Co Bimetallic Compounds with Hollow Nanoflower Structure for Optimizing Hydrogen Evolution Catalysis

Abstract:Composition screening and structure optimization are two critical factors in improving the electrocatalytic performance of hybrid materials. Herein, we present a straightforward hydrothermal hydrolyzation-topological transformation strategy for the synthesis of a range of Ni-Co bimetallic compounds with a hollow nanoflower structure. Among these Ni-Co compounds, Ni2P/Co2P hollow nanoflowers (HNFs) exhibit the most impressive electrocatalytic activity for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), necessitating only an 153 mV overpotential to achieve a current density of 10 mA cm-2 under alkaline conditions. Importantly, this performance remains stable for over 48 h, indicating exceptional durability. The exceptional catalytic performance of Ni2P/Co2P HNFs arises from the synergy between the hybrid Ni2P/Co2P components and the hollow nanoflower structure. The former provides abundant catalytic sites, while electron rearrangement at the heterointerfaces enhances the adsorption/desorption of active species and facilitates electron transfer. The latter contributes to the exposure of catalytic sites, shortening mass and charge transfer routes, and bolstering structural stability during prolonged electrocatalysis. This research offers valuable insights into the screening and optimization of advanced hybrid electrocatalysts, holding significant promise for applications in the emerging field of new energy technologies.
Revealing the Surface Structure and Morphology Evolution of Co Nanoparticle Supported on Zro 2 Surfaces

Abstract:The optimization of structure-dependent activity of supported metal catalysts has driven the dynamic determination of the morphology of Co nanoparticles on ZrO2 using atomic-level simulations. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations combined with ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) simulations were used to investigate the surface structure, nucleation mechanism and morphology evolution of Co-n clusters supported on different ZrO2 facets. As the size of the Co-n (n = 1-5) cluster increases, the competition between Co-Co bonding and the interaction of Co-n clusters with the ZrO2 surface further promotes the nucleation of larger clusters. Co atoms prefer to nucleate into large clusters on both c-ZrO2(111) and t-ZrO2(101) surfaces, but this behavior is unfavorable on the m-ZrO2(-111) surface. The analysis of electric properties suggests that the types of hybrid orbitals and the number of electron transfer accounts for the difference in energies of Co-n clusters on ZrO2 surfaces. Further, the AIMD simulations verified the stable structure of small Co-5 cluster obtained by DFT, and predicted the morphology of large Co-13 clusters on ZrO2 surfaces under realistic reaction conditions, consistent with the experimental SAM images. Our work provides an intuitive understanding of structure and morphology evolution of catalysts for the targeted design of catalysts to achieve the desired activity and explore more reaction possibilities.

Abstract:The morphology change is crucial to the catalysis performance of catalyst nanoparticles in heterogeneous catalysis. Iron and iron carbide nanoparticles are used as high temperature heterogeneous catalyst, such as Fischer-Tropsch synthesis and carbon nanotube growth. Here we have investigated the effect of temperature and entropy on the surface free energy and morphology of the iron and iron carbide (θ-Fe3C, χ-Fe5C2, and o-Fe7C3) nanoparticles using molecular dynamics. The free energies of all the bulk and most of the surface systems drop following a parabolic curve with elevating temperature due to entropic effect. The nanoparticles are covered by low index surfaces at low temperature. At low temperature, the surface free energies of all surfaces usually decrease with a similar slope with increasing temperature. However, a critical temperature exists at which the high-index surfaces starts to dominate the catalyst particles. Fe7C3 shows an unusual minimum surface free energy at 400 K in all the surfaces. This study provides fundamental insights into the modulation of iron-based nanocatalysts morphologies with desired catalytic performance.

Abstract:The controllable and safe hydrogen storage technologies are widely recognized as the main bottleneck for the accomplishment of sustainable hydrogen energy. Ammonia borane (AB) has regarded as a competitive candidate for chemical hydrogen storage. However, developing efficient yet high-performance catalysts towards hydrogen evolution from AB hydrolysis remains an enormous challenge. Herein, cobalt phosphide nanosheets are synthesized by a facile salt-assisted along with low-temperature phosphidation strategy for simultaneously modulating its morphology and electronic structure, and function as hydrogen evolution photocatalysts. Impressively, the Co2P nanosheets display extraordinary performance with a record high turnover frequency of 44.9 min−1, outperforming most of the noble-metal-free catalysts reported to date. This remarkable performance is attributed to its desired nanosheets structure, featuring with high specific surface area, abundant exposed active sites, and short charge diffusion paths. Our findings provide a novel strategy for regulating metal phosphides with desired phase structure and morphology for energy-related applications and beyond.
Morphology Evolution of FCC and HCP Cobalt Induced by a CO Atmosphere from <i>Ab Initio</i> Thermodynamics

Abstract:Fischer-Tropsch synthesis, the conversion of CO and H-2 to long-chain hydrocarbons, is performed at relatively low temperatures and high pressures over the most commonly encountered iron-, ruthenium-, or cobalt-based catalysts. Identification of the morphologies and structure evolution of FTS catalysts under reaction conditions are essential for understanding the structure-reactivity relationship. In this work, we performed a comprehensive ab initio thermodynamics study to provide an understanding of the morphology evolution of cobalt (Co) catalyst with hexagonal close-packed (HCP) and face-centered cubic (FCC) crystal structures under a CO atmosphere. CO adsorption on numerous surfaces of HCP Co and FCC Co at different coverages were investigated. On both HCP Co and FCC Co, lateral interaction is attractive at lower coverage and becomes repulsive at higher coverage. Compared to FCC Co, though in average CO adsorption on HCP Co is stronger at lower coverage, they become similar at higher coverage due to the overwhelming lateral repulsion. We established the phase diagrams and the morphology evolution of FCC Co and HCP Co as a function of CO chemical potentials. The most probable exposed facets in FCC Co and HCP Co Wulff shapes were revealed under different CO atmospheres. At a relatively low CO chemical potential, many open facets could be exposed in Co equilibrium morphology, including {10 (1) over bar2}, {10 (1) over bar1}, {10 (1) over bar0}, and {11 (2) over bar0} facets for HCP Co and {311}, {110}, and {100} facets for FCC Co. In contrast, at a relatively high CO chemical potential, FCC Co has an octahedron shape composed entirely by close-packed {111} facets, while HCP Co is hexagonal prism shaped composed mainly by close-packed {0001} and {10 (1) over bar0} facets. The morphology evolution of HCP and FCC phases would have great impact on the inherited catalytic performance of Co nanoparticles, thus will selectively regulate their chemical reactivity.
