Language Differences and the Market for Patents: Evidence from China's Inter-City Patent License Data

Abstract:This study constructs a new patent license database based on the changes in the patent legal status published by the State Intellectual Property Office of China. We study the technology transfer cost across China's cities. We estimate the influence of language differences, measured as the dialect distance, on patent license. The main findings are as follows. First, the number of licenses between cities still decreases significantly with dialect distance after controlling for variables such as the geographical distance. Second, the dialect distance does not affect patent licenses between related parties. Third, the dialect distance affects patent licenses by affecting trust rather than information exchange between cities. Fourth, the dialect distance has a greater impact on the licensing of invention patents than on the licensing of utility patents. This is further evidence that trust is the main mechanism through which the dialect distance influences patent licensing.
