Abstract:In this study, rice straw was used as a raw material to prepare biochar, and it was returned to the field to explore how straw biochar can promote crop growth. The results showed the following: (1) compared with the CK group, the germination rate and dry weight of wheat increased by 11%–22% and 16.45%–43.86%, respectively; soil microbial biomass carbon and microbial biomass nitrogen contents increased by 53.8%–84.4% and 16.57%–59.41%, respectively; soil NH 4 + -N and NO 3 - -N contents increased by 11.37%–269.33% and 67.68%–161.89%, respectively; and soil available phosphorus and potassium increased by 4.20%–29.41% and 374.71%–588.63%, respectively, in the biochar-treated group. (2) The total NH 4 + -N and NO 3 — N contents in the original soil and biochar before biochar returned to the field were less than that of the soil after biochar returned to the field; in contrast, the total available phosphorus and available potassium contents before biochar returned to the field were considerably greater than that of the soil after biochar returned to the field. (3) The activities of urease, nitrate reductase, nitrite reductase, and hydroxylamine reductase associated with the conversion of soil available nitrogen increased to varying degrees after biochar returned to the field, and phosphatase activities associated with the conversion of soil available phosphorus were reduced. Through preliminary analysis, it was concluded that straw biochar promotes crop growth because it increases soil available nitrogen by promoting soil enzyme activity and increases soil available phosphorus and potassium through its own supply to be absorbed and utilised by crops.
