Abstract:A serious acidification trend currently affects paddy soil and soil phosphorus (P) availability has declined in rice production. This study investigated the effect of rice-straw biochar on P availability and the adaptability of rice roots in acidified soil. Rice was grown in rhizoboxes, allowing for the precise sampling of rhizosphere and bulk soil for the sequential extraction of P fractions. Biochar may provide a liming effect and strong nutrient adsorption, leading to soil improvement. The results confirmed that biochar application significantly improved plant growth and P accumulation in shoots by 29% and 75%, respectively. However, the application of washed biochar and equivalent lime only increased shoot biomass and P accumulation by 13.4% and 11.2%, and by 42% and 38%, respectively. Compared with the control, applying biochar increased the plant-available P component contents in rhizosphere and bulk soil. Biochar affected the chemical balance among the different P fractions, increased aluminum-bound phosphate (Al-P) pool, calcium-bound phosphate (Ca-P) pool and decreased the occluded phosphate pool in acidic paddy soil. Biochar amendment significantly improved root growth of and increased the citrate exudation from roots under low P supply, accompanied by the enhanced expression of the anion-transporter-related OsFRDL4 gene and the OsPT1 phosphate transporter. The results showed that biochar application in degraded acidic soils could improve rice potential for P acquisition to increase available P component and maintain high citrate exudation.

Abstract:A sustainable biochar strategies on increasing crop yield and mitigating CH 4 emissions over successive years is unknown. Thus, on-site equivalent rice straw biochar-returning (ERSC, biochar at 2.8 t ha(-1) annual) were compared with on-site equivalent rice straw- returning (RS, rice straw at 8 t ha(-1) annual) and high application rate biochar-returning (RSCH, biochar at 22.5 t ha(-1) only in the first year). The RS and RSCH treatments increased rice production by 10.1% and 11.8% on average, respectively. The ERSC treatment continually increased rice production by 8.0%, 1.6% and 7.3% in three successive years. The ERSC treatment had a cumulative effect on the soil nutrients phosphorus (P), potassium (K), and magnesium (Mg), as well as increasing total carbon (TC) and total nitrogen (TN) and continuously reducing the effect of soil available aluminum (Al). The RS treatment significantly promoted CH4 emissions while the ERSC treatment reduced methane emissions by 43%, 31% and 30% and the RSCH treatment reduced methane emissions by 52%, 22% and14% in three successive years. Compared with RSCH, ERSC showed the best long-term stable effect on methane emission mitigation in three successive years. This might result from the fact that fresh biochar promoted anaerobic oxidation of methane. This research gives us scientific evidence that an on-site equivalent rice straw biochar-returning strategy may be a promising method for sustaining rice production and mitigating methane emissions. Straw and Biochar Application Alters the Structure of Rhizosphere Microbial Communities in Direct-Seeded Rice (Oryza sativa L.) Paddies

Abstract:A comprehensive understanding of rice straw (RS) and biochar (BC) addition affecting soil quality, enzyme activities, bacterial community structure and grain yield is crucial. The objective of this study was to examine the dynamics of the soil microbial community impacted by the application of rice straw and biochar, and to understand the relationship between the microbial communities, soil enzymes, nutrients and grain yield of paddies. We conducted a field experiment with organic amendments under the direct seeding of paddies. The bacterial community structure in the rhizosphere was characterized using high-throughput 16S rRNA sequencing. The results showed that RS amendment increased grain yields by 8.5 and 9.9% more than with BC and the control without organic amendment (CK), respectively (p < 0.05). The abundance of bacteria associated with nitrate reduction in RS was higher than that in BC and CK, which further showed the significance of the RS-treated soil bacteria in rice nutrient utilization. A cladogram plotted using linear discriminant analysis effect size showed that Proteobacteria (Alphaproteobacteria), Acidobacteria, Firmicutes, Verrucomicrobia and Epsilonbacteraeota in the RS-treated soil increased in comparison with CK. Pearson’s correlation analysis showed that enzymes activities (cellulase activity and protease activity), soil nutrition content (soil hydrolyzable nitrogen), and bacterial phyla (Nitrospinae) were positively correlated with grain yield, suggesting that the RS-treated soil improved enzyme activities, soil nutrition content, and bacterial abundance, which in turn increased grain yield. The results indicated that RS-treated bacterial communities combined with soil enzymatic activities strengthen the transformation of nutrients, suggesting that the interactions play an important role in enhancing the grain yield of paddy rice. These results provide new insights and a theoretical basis for studying the changes in soil microbial communities with the application of RS and BC in Northeastern China.

Abstract:Biochar amendment can benefit rice growth, but the long-term effects of rice straw carbonized utilization (RSCU, biochar, and biochar-based fertilizer) on rice production in cold areas are still unclear. Herein, we conducted a field experiment over 6 years with four treatments: F (conventional fertilization) as the control, RB1 (biochar, 3 t·ha−1), RB2 (biochar, 6 t·ha−1), and RBF (biochar-based fertilizer, 0.75 t·ha−1). We found that rice straw biochar significantly improved soil physical properties by reducing soil bulk density, increasing soil porosity and liquid and gas phases ratio, and enhancing soil aggregate stability. RSCU also increased soil fertility by improving soil organic carbon (SOC), active organic carbon, and soil nutrients (N, P, K) and their availability, as indicated by an increase in soil C:N and a decrease in soil N:P. Moreover, biochar increased soil microbial biomass carbon (MBC), microbial biomass nitrogen (MBN), and enzyme activities. As a result, RSCU increased rice yield, which was positively correlated with soil total porosity, total phosphorus, available potassium, dissolved organic carbon (DOC), easily oxidizable carbon (EOC), labile fraction of organic carbon (LFOC), and urease activity. Abstract:The effects of biochar application on soil microbial communities and functional characteristics and their correlations with soil fertility properties were explored in a double rice cropping system three to four years after a single biochar amendment. Three treatments including a control, a low (24 t ha(-1)), and a high (48 t ha(-1)) application rate of straw-derived biochar were constructed. Biochar amendment significantly increased the abundance of bacteria and fungi by up to 102 % and 178 %, respectively, which might be probably caused by the increases in soil total organic carbon (TOC), total nitrogen, and rice biomass as compared with the control. However, the abundance of archaea was only slightly elevated after biochar amendments. Bacteria/fungi ratios were significantly decreased by up to 61.4 % in the biochar treatments, probably because fungi were the dominant decomposers of increased recalcitrant carbon from biochar and rice biomass. Biochar stimulated the relative abundance of Acidobacteria, which favours soil organic carbon accumulation. Biochar increased the relative abundances of Mortierella and Westerdykella, which are more beneficial to plant growth and TOC degradation. Furthermore, potential phytopathogens of Athelia and Penicillium were decreased with biochar amendment. The results demonstrate that biochar application should be sustained as an effective measure for improving the microbial characteristics of paddy field by ameliorating its soil properties.
Effects of biochar amendment on soil quality, crop yield and greenhouse gas emission in a Chinese rice paddy: A field study of 2 consecutive rice growing cycles

Abstract:Biochar production and application from crop straw had been proposed as one effective countermeasure to mitigate climate change. We conducted a 2-year consecutive field experiment in 2009 and 2010 in rice paddy to gain insight into the consistency over years of biochar effects on rice production and greenhouse gases emissions. Biochar was amended in 2009 before rice transplanting at rates of 0, 10, 20 and 40tha−1, soil emissions of carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4) and nitrous oxide (N2O) were monitored with closed chamber method at 7 days interval throughout the whole rice growing season (WRGS) both in 2009 and 2010. The results showed that biochar amendment increased rice productivity, soil pH, soil organic carbon, total nitrogen but decreased soil bulk density in both cycles of rice growth. Soil respiration observed no significant difference between biochar amendment and the corresponding control both in the first and second cycle, respectively. However, biochar amendment decreased nitrous oxide emission but increased methane emission in both cycles. No significant difference in carbon intensity of rice production (GHGI) and global warming potential (GWP) were observed between the biochar amendment at the rate of 10tha−1 and 40tha−1 and control though the GWP and GHGI was increased by 39% and 26% at the rate of 20tha−1 respectively, in the first cycle. However, in the second cycle, both of overall GWP and GHGI were observed significantly decreased under biochar amendment as compared to control, ranging from 7.1% to 18.7% and from 12.4% to 34.8%, respectively. The biochar effect intensity on global warming potential were observed from −2.5% to 39.2% in the first cycle, and from −18.7% to −7.1% in the second cycle. However, the biochar effect intensity on C intensity of rice production was observed from −10.2% to 25.8% in the first cycle, and from −36.9% to −18.6% in the second cycle. Therefore, biochar effect on reducing the overall C intensity of rice production could become stronger in the subsequent cycles than that in the first cycle though a consistently strong effect on reducing N2O emission in a single crop cycle after biochar amendment. Nevertheless, these effects were not found in proportional to biochar amendment rates and a high rice yield but lowest C intensity was achieved under biochar amendment at 10tha−1 in both cycles of the rice paddy in the present study.

Abstract:The specific effect of long-term successive biochar application on soil fertility, α-diversity, and composition of bacterial community and their correlations remain unclear. A field experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of straw biochar application on soil physical and chemical properties and the diversity and composition of the bacterial communities in 12 consecutive crop seasons. Four treatments: BC1 (2.25 Mgha −1 biochar), BC5 (11.25 Mgha −1 biochar), RS (2.25 Mgha −1 rice straw), and blank control (CK, without biochar or rice straw) were set up. The results indicated that biochar and rice straw reduced the richness indexes of the soil bacterial community (Chao1 and ACE by 10.3%–27.4% and 12.2%–26.4%, respectively). High-throughput sequencing results showed that the relative abundance of Cyanobacteria , Bacteroidetes, and Actinobacteria increased as the amount of biochar increased, while those of norank_c__Acidobacteria and norank_f__Anaerolineaceae Proteobacteria , Acidobacteria and Nitrospirae decreased. Long-term successive biochar application significantly increased soil pH, available potassium, total organic carbon, total nitrogen, and cation exchange capacity by 5.7%–25.9%, 40.0%–680.0%, 48.0%–217.1%, 51.0%–109.5%, and 5.4%–24.0%, respectively. Soil dissolved organic carbon was slightly decreased by 1.4%–4.0%. Soil pH and C/N were the two major environmental factors affecting the composition of the soil bacterial community according to redundancy analysis. Furthermore, the phylogenetic investigation of communities by reconstruction of unobserved states showed that biochar significantly increased the relative abundance of information on the functions of the metabolism of other amino acids, metabolism of terpenoids and polyketides, and biosynthesis of other secondary metabolites ( p < 0.05). Therefore, long-term successive biochar amendment in rice-wheat rotation systems improved soil fertility, altered the structure of the soil bacterial community, and increased the functions of soil bacteria, but decreased the α-diversity of the bacterial community. This study will provide technical and theoretical support for rice-straw carbonization and long-term soil remediation from the perspective of microorganisms.

Abstract:Biochar has received attention due to its potential for mitigating climate change through carbon sequestration in soil and improving soil quality and crop productivity. This study evaluated the effects of rice straw biochar (RSB) and rice husk ash (RHA) each applied at 5 Mg ha −1 and four N levels (0, 40, 80, and 120 kg ha −1 ) on soil fertility, growth, and yield of rice and wheat for three consecutive rice–wheat rotations. RSB significantly increased electrical conductivity, dehydrogenase activity, and P and K contents when compared to control (no amendment) up to 7.5 cm soil depth. Both RSB and RHA did not influence shoot N concentration in wheat plant but significantly increased P and K concentrations at 60 days after sowing. Grain yields of both rice and wheat were significantly higher in RSB as compared to control (no amendment) and RHA treatments. While the highest grain yields of rice and wheat were observed at 120 kg N ha −1 in RHA and no biochar-treated plots, a significant increase in grain yields was observed at 80 kg N ha −1 in RSB treatment, thereby saving 40 kg N ha −1 in each crop. Both agronomic and recovery N efficiencies in rice and wheat were significantly higher in RSB-amended soil compared to control. Significant positive correlations were observed between soil N, P, and K concentrations and total N, P, and K concentrations in aboveground biomass of wheat at 60 days after sowing. This study showed the potential benefits of applying RSB for improving soil fertility and yields of rice and wheat in a rice–wheat system.

Abstract:To clarify the effects of co-application of rice-straw biochar and different chemical fertilizer doses on paddy soil properties and japonica rice production in Northeast China, a located-field experiment was adopted for 5 years. The treatments included fertilization (F, no biochar, control) and rice-straw biochar (7.5 t ha −1 ) combined with different chemical fertilizer doses (100, 80, and 60% that of F) set as CF, CF1, and CF2, respectively. The results showed that the co-application of biochar and chemical fertilizers after 5 years reduced soil bulk density, increased soil total and capillary porosity, changed the soil solid–liquid–gas ratio (increased the liquid and air ratios and decreased the solid ratio), and increased soil macroaggregates (>0.25 mm) and aggregate stability, which enhanced the soil's physical properties. Furthermore, the co-application improved soil pH and soil enzyme activity (urease, sucrase, and catalase) and had a significant effect on promoting SOM. The soil total N, P, and K of CF and CF1, were 23.48, %, 47.28%, and 26.59% and 9.47%, 43.98%, and 27.87% higher than those of the control, respectively. The soil available nutrients (N, P, and K) increased in the co-application treatment, shown as the nitrogen was promoted higher in the early growth of rice, while phosphorus and potassium were exhibited greater in the late growth. With the soil amendment, the co-application increased the rice plant height and dry matter accumulation, and the CF and CF1 increased yields by 5.78 and 2.41%, respectively, by increasing the rice effective panicles, grains per panicle, and seed-setting rate. The co-application of biochar and chemical fertilizers could significantly amend soil properties and reduce chemical fertilizer use to ensure rice–grain output, which has an important significance for enhancing sustainable soil and crop productivity.

Abstract:Agricultural organic matter is a major component of organic waste on earth that significantly contributes in environmental pollution. The conversion of organic waste into biochar and addition to soil is the recommended strategy to reduce the negative environmental effects of organic waste and to increase the soil fertility. Therefore, in this study, we evaluated the changes in nutrient concentrations, rice yield and microbial community structure in a Psammaquent and Plinthudult at harvest following incorporation of biochar derived from wheat straw. Wheat straw biochar generated at 300-500 degrees C under oxygen limited conditions was applied, in a greenhouse experiment to a Psammaquent and Plinthudult at a rate of 3% weight/weight (w/w). The biochar addition to both types of soil significantly increased the soil pH from 4.2 to 6.2 and 4.7 to 6.7, total nitrogen by 135 and 37%, and organic carbon by 90 and 80%, in the Psammaquent and Plinthudult, respectively as compared to the respective controls. The dissolved organic nitrogen (DON) was decreased by 24 and 15% and dissolved organic carbon (DOC) by 40 and 44% in Psammaquent and Plinthudult, respectively. The biochar decreased the concentrations of K leached by 24%, B by 25%, Cu by 80%, Mn by 37% and Zn by 33% in the Psammaquent and B by 50%, Cu by 60%, Fe by 43%, Mn by 69% and Zn by 83% in the Plinthudult as compared to the controls. The wheat straw biochar addition to two soils increased the accumulation of Mn, Mo, Na and Zn in both rice straw and grain and decreased the leaching of nutrients, organic carbon and nitrogen at rice harvest and increased the leaching of Ca, Na, and Mg in both Psammaquent and Plinthudult. The biochar increased the pH, TOC and nitrogen in both soils. The biochar significantly changed the PLFA concentration indicating different microbial community pattern in soils growing rice compared to their controls. Thus, the results indicated that wheat straw biochar increased the productivity of rice in the Plinthudult and Psammaquent.
Biochar Amendments to Tropical Paddy Soil Increase Rice Yields and Decrease N2O Emissions by Modifying the Genes Involved in Nitrogen Cycling

Abstract:Water management strategies are critical in regulating nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions from paddy soils under rice cultivation. Biochar is widely used as an amendment to decrease soil N2O emissions. However, the impacts of biochar amendment on N2O emissions under different water management strategies in paddy soils have not been investigated thoroughly, and the underlying mechanisms remain poorly understood. In particular, the effects of mid-season water drainage, a strategy used for water conservation, need to be better understood. In this study, a pot experiment was conducted including six treatments: alternating dry-wet conditions during the mid-season period without and with 2% (w/w) biochar (AWD1 and AWD2, respectively), continuous flooding during the mid-season period without (CF1) and with 2% (CF2) biochar, and regular mid-season drainage during the mid-season period without (CON1) and with 2% (CON2) biochar. All treatments received inorganic nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium fertilizers (NPK) administered in a split application. We found that fluxes of N2O emission peaked after the two fertilizers’ additions. No significant difference in the first N2O flux peak was found among different treatments. There also was no difference in the second N2O flux peak in both CF treatments, whereas biochar addition significantly decreased the second N2O flux peak in AWD2 and CON2 treatments. This was mainly due to increased nosZ gene copies and decreased ratios of denitrification and amoA genes to nosZ gene copies. Biochar amendments resulted in significant stimulation of nifH gene copies in the AWD2 treatment. Lastly, biochar increased rice yields in all treatments. Our study suggested that AWD2 was the optimal management strategy for mitigating N2O emissions and improving rice production in this tropical paddy soil.
Legacy of soil health improvement with carbon increase following one time amendment of biochar in a paddy soil – A rice farm trial

Abstract:<p>"4 per 1000 Initiative" launched at COP21 has strongly recommended that increasing soil organic carbon (SOC) is a global imperative. However, the strategies to improve agricultural soil functioning and health by an increase in soil C have been poorly addressed. In a rice farm trail, topsoil samples were collected in 2015 respectively in a field amended with biochar (BA) (equivalent to 10 t ha<sup>−1</sup>) in 2009 and an adjacent field with no biochar (NB). Soil aggregation, biochemical activities and microbial communities of the samples were analyzed with microscopic, micro-biochemical and molecular assays respectively. Compared to NB field, SOC storage increased by 45%, total and available nitrogen pool enhanced by approximately 30% while the bulk density decreased and soil pH unchanged in BA field. A 25% increase in mean weight diameter of water stable aggregates was observed in the BA compared to NB field. Correspondingly, microbial biomass nitrogen and enzyme activities in BA field was enhanced both by approximately 30% compared to NB field. Furthermore, with community structure altered, a moderate (32%) increase in total bacterial abundance and a significant decrease in microbial abundance of amino acid metabolism and fungal pathotrophs were observed in BA field compared to NB field. This could link to the higher (10%) grain yield with lower yield inter-annual variability in BA field compared to NB field, reported previously. All these changes clearly demonstrated a legacy of paddy soil health improvement over years following one time biochar amendment. Overall, addition of biochar to the clayey nutrient rich paddy soil could sustain an increase in SOC, soil aggregation and soil health functioning, with positive changes in microbial community over years. Thus, carbon increase as per required by the "4 per 1000 Initiative" could be a mechanistic driver to enhance soil fertility and improve soil-(plant) health for ensuring food production in world rice agriculture facing land degradation and climate change impacts, which could be assisted by biochar from crop residue in an approach of circular economy.</p>

Abstract:Biochar can significantly change soil properties and improve soil quality. However, the effects of long‐term combined application of biochar (B) and nitrogen (N) fertilizer on relationships between soil enzyme activity, microbial community structure and crop yield are still obscure. We characterized these relationships in a long‐term (8 years) field experiment with rice, two biochar rates of 0 and 13.5 t ha‐1 year‐1 (B0 and B) and two N fertilizer rates of 0 and 300 kg N ha‐1 year‐1 (N0 and N). The repeated, long‐term combined applications of biochar and N fertilizer significantly increased microbial biomass carbon and nitrogen (MBC and MBN), but biochar decreased the abundance of total bacteria, fungi, actinomycetes, Gram‐positive and Gram‐negative bacteria as well as the amount of total phospholipid fatty acids. The activity of leucine aminopeptidase (LAP) decreased significantly in the biochar‐amended and N fertilized treatment, but the LAP activity either remained unchanged or increased with biochar amendment at N0. The relative abundance of bacterial phylum Chloroflexi was increased in the combined biochar and N fertilizer treatment. The changes in soil organic matter and the activity of α‐1,4‐xylosidase were the major properties influencing soil bacterial community composition, whereas the structure of fungal community was governed by MBC, MBN and LAP activity. In addition, long‐term biochar and N fertilizer applied together significantly increased rice yield (more than biochar and nitrogen fertilizer applied alone). Yield was significantly positively correlated with LAP activity, but significantly negatively correlated with the relative abundance of Chloroflexi. In conclusion, long‐term biochar and nitrogen fertilizer applications increased rice yield, which was associated with altered soil microbial community and enhanced activity of some enzymes.

Abstract:Abstract The application of straw and biochar can effectively improve soil quality, but whether such application impacts paddy soil bacterial community development remains to be clarified. Herein, the impacts of three different field amendment strategies were assessed including control (CK) treatment, rice straw (RS) application (9000 kg ha −1 ), and biochar (BC) application (3150 kg ha −1 ). Soil samples were collected at five different stages of rice growth, and the bacterial communities therein were characterized via high-throughput 16S rDNA sequencing. The results of these analyses revealed that soil bacterial communities were dominated by three microbial groups ( Chloroflexi, Proteobacteria and Acidobacteria ). Compared with the CK samples, Chloroflexi, Actinobacteria, Nitrospirae and Gemmatimonadetes levels were dominated phyla in the RS treatment, and Acidobacteria, Actinobacteria, Nitrospirae and Patescibacteria were dominated phyla in the BC treatment. Compared with the RS samples, Chloroflexi , Acidobacteria , Actinobacteria , and Verrucomicrobia levels were increased, however, Proteobacteria , Gemmatimonadetes , Nitrospirae , and Firmicute levels were decreased in the BC samples. Rhizosphere soil bacterial diversity rose significantly following RS and BC amendment, and principal component analyses confirmed that there were significant differences in soil bacterial community composition among treatment groups when comparing all stages of rice growth other than the ripening stage. Relative to the CK treatment, Gemmatimonadaceae, Sphingomonadaceae, Thiovulaceae, Burkholderiaceae, and Clostridiaceae-1 families were dominant following the RS application, while Thiovulaceae and uncultured-bacterium-o-C0119 were dominant following the BC application. These findings suggest that RS and BC application can improve microbial diversity and richness in paddy rice soil in Northeast China.

Abstract:PurposeOveruse of chemical fertilizer in agriculture has caused serious nitrogen (N) loss and water pollution problems in China. Biochar has the potential ability to reduce N loss and increase crop yield. However, there is still limited knowledge of the impacts of different biochars on N loss and crop yield over agriculturally relevant time frames. In this study, we compared the effects of amendment with bamboo biochar and rice straw biochar on the N retention and rice productivity in paddy fields, over an agriculturally relevant time span of 2 years.Materials and methodsA 2-year field study was conducted to investigate the effects of bamboo biochar and rice straw biochar amendment at a rate of 22.5 t ha−1 (with or without urea) on N retention and rice growth. Total nitrogen (TN), ammonia (NH4+-N), and nitrate (NO3−-N) in soil and surface water were determined after biochar application. Stem lengths and rice yield were monitored during the experiment.Results and discussionAmendment with rice straw biochar resulted in higher rice yields than in paddy soils that had bamboo biochar amendments. Incorporating rice straw biochar into a paddy field increased the rice yield by 19.8 % in 2009 and 21.6 % in 2010 without urea (P < 0.05) and by 11.3 % in 2009 (P < 0.05) and 14.4 % in 2010 with urea, compared with their corresponding control treatments. Although there were no significant impacts on the surface water N runoff potential, biochar amendment did result in a significant increase in the NO3−-N content of rhizosphere soil—121.2–135.7 % with urea and 89.7–102.2 % without urea, respectively, at the tillering stage in the first year (P < 0.05).ConclusionsThese results show that carbonizing rice straw residue into biochar and incorporating it into soil has the potential to enhance rice productivity and N retention in a paddy field.

Effects of Biochar Amendment on Net Greenhouse Gas Emissions and Soil Fertility in a Double Rice Cropping System: A 4-Year Field Experiment

Abstract:A 4-year field experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of biochar amendment on the net greenhouse gas emission (NGHGE), greenhouse gas intensity (GHGI), soil fertility and crop yield in a typical double rice cropping system in the central subtropics of China, from April 2012 to April 2016. Three biochar treatments were studied in this experiment, with application rates of 0, 24 and 48 t ha(-1) (named CK, LB and HB, respectively) using straw-derived biochar applied once at the beginning of the experiment. In each treatment, the fluxes of methane (CH4), nitrous oxide (N2O) and soil heterotrophic respiration (Rh) were measured using a static chamber/gas chromatography method. Major soil fertility properties were also determined throughout the experimental period. Biochar amendment was found to persistently decrease annual total CH4 emissions by 20 to 51% in the four years, but increased the annual total N2O emissions and Rh by 150 to 190% and 2 to 19% in the first year and the following three years, respectively. On a 4-year average, biochar addition significantly reduced annual NGHGE and GHGI by 156 to 264% and 159 to 278%, respectively (p < 0.05), with much higher reduction in the first year than those in the following three years (916 to 1911% vs 24 to 51%) due to soil carbon sequestration from biochar addition in the first year. The reduction of NGHGE and GHGI was mainly caused by the decrease of CH4 emissions (71 to 74% contribution), and the increase of soil carbon sequestration (25 to 29% contribution) in biochar treatments. Biochar amendment also significantly and persistently increased soil pH, total organic carbon (TOC), total nitrogen (TSN), and total phosphorus (TSP) by 6 to 14%, 33 to 61%, 11 to 15%, and 9 to 12%, respectively (p < 0.05), in the four years. Significant increases (p < 0.05) of microbial biomass carbon and nitrogen contents were found only in the first year after biochar amendment. Soil pH was also increased significantly (p < 0.05) with biochar amendment, but showed a declining trend in the four years. Annual grain yields for the biochar treatments were enhanced by 1 to 13%, with an average of 4 to 7% in the four years, compared to CK (p = 0.07-0.26). Compared to the LB treatment, the HB treatment significantly decreased average NGHGE and GHGI, and significantly increased average soil pH value and TOC content, but there was no significantly difference in average TSN, TSP, and yield between LB and HB treatments (p < 0.05). The gross margin analysis by considering the profit from rice grain, gain for NGHGE, and cost for biochar indicated that the economical profit for the LB treatment might be higher than that for the CK and HB treatments. Our results suggest that addition of biochar at 24 t ha(-1) can be regarded as a consistently effective and economic measure for greenhouse gas emission mitigation, and soil fertility improvement, in the double rice cropping system.
Biochar Amendment and Nitrogen Fertilizer Contribute to the Changes in Soil Properties and Microbial Communities in a Paddy Field

Abstract:Biochar amendment can influence the abundance, activity, and community structure of soil microbes. However, scare information is present about the effect of the combined application of biochar with synthetic nitrogen (N) fertilizer under paddy field condition. We aimed to resolve this research gap in rice field conditions through different biochar in combination with N fertilizers on soil nutrients, soil microbial communities, and rice grain yield. The present study involves eight treatments in the form of biochar (0, 10, 20, and 30 t ha –1 ) and N (135 and 180 kg ha –1 ) fertilizer amendments. The soil microbial communities were characterized using high-throughput sequencing of 16S and Internal transcribed spacer (ITS) ribosomal RNA gene amplicons. Experiential findings showed that the treatments had biochar amendments along with N fertilizer significantly advanced soil pH, soil organic carbon (SOC), total nitrogen (TN), soil microbial carbon (SMBC), soil microbial nitrogen (SMBN), and rice grain yield in comparison to sole N application. Furthermore, in comparison with control in the first year (2019), biochar amendment mixed with N fertilizer had more desirable relative abundance of microorganism, phyla Acidobacteria, Actinobacteria, Proteobacteria, and Verrucomicrobia with better relative abundance ranging from 8.49, 4.60, 46.30, and 1.51% in T7, respectively. Similarly, during 2020, bacteria phyla Acidobacteria, Actinobacteria, Bacteroidetes, Gemmatimonadetes, Planctomycetes, and Verrucomicrobia were resulted in higher and ranging from 8.69, 5.18, 3.5, 1.9, 4.0, and 1.6%, in biochar applied treatments, respectively, as compared to control (T1). Among the treatments, Sphingopyxis and Thiobacillus bacterial genus were in higher proportion in T7 and T3, respectively, as compared to other treatments and Bacillus was higher in T6. Interestingly, biochar addition significantly decreased the soil fungi phyla Ascomycota, Basidiomycota, Chytridiomycota, and Rozellomycota, in 2020 as compared to 2019. Whereas biochar addition to soil decreased Echria , Kohlmeyeriopsis , and Westerdykella fungal genus as compared to non-biochar treatments. The redundancy analysis showed that soil biochemical traits were positively correlated with soil bacteria. In addition, correlation analysis showed that soil bacteria including Acidobacteria, Actinobacteria, Bacteroidetes, Planctomycetes, and Proteobacteria strongly correlated with rice grain yield. This study demonstrated that soil nutrients and bacteria contribute to an increase in rice yield in combined biochar amendment with lower N treatments.

Abstract:The application of biochar and arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) is of great significance in improving soil properties and plant growth. In this study, a pot experiment of rice (Oryza sativa L) was conducted to evaluate the effects of biochar derived from rice husk (HBC) and wood (WBC) combined with AMF (Rhizophagus irregularis) on soil nutrient availability and rice root traits. The results showed that the presence of AMF significantly increased soil pH and microbial biomass carbon content, and also significantly increased nutrient accumulation in plants (except shoot N content) in the absence of biochar. Both biochar significantly increased mycorrhizal colonization, with greater effects from HBC than WBC. The correlation analysis showed that mycorrhizal colonization rate had a significant positive correlation with soil nutrient availability (P and K) and microbial biomass carbon and nitrogen. Compared with the application of biochar and AMF alone, the combination of biochar and AMF led to significant increases in soil NO3−-N content, available K content, and total P content, while significantly decreased in NH4+-N content. The positive effects of biochar and AMF together on plant nutrient uptake and root growth were more than when either biochar or AMF was present. The increase of plant nutrient accumulation was driven by the increase of mycorrhizal colonization and the improvement of root structure guided by the change of soil nutrient availability by biochar and AMF. Overall, this study indicated that the biochar combined with AMF improved the soil nutrient availability and root growth strategy, and then promoted the nutrient absorption capacity of rice.

Abstract:New technology of dry distillation under hypoxia condition was used for made biochar (biomass-derived black carbon).The effects of biochar application on rice were studied by pot experiment. Before rice transplant, soil were treated with three different weight levels of biochar and no biochar as control(CK).The results show that biochar amendments in rice soil could boost height of rice, and also increased the dry matter accumulation of leaf, stem and root at various growth stage. The rice net photosynthetic rates of biochar treatments were higher than control. Transpiration rate of biochar treatment was increased at the tillering stage and filling stage, declined at the jointing stage and heading stage as well. Rice yield per hill of biochar treatments were higher than control for the main reason of the panicles per hill and spikelets per panicle increased. The rice yield of C2 (20g·kg-1 biochar amendment) was the highest which significant difference compared with other treatments. Rice milling and appearance quality of biochar treatments were better than control with brown rice rate, milled rice rate and head rice rate were increased while the chalky grain rate and chalkiness were decreased. Rice protein and fatty acid content of biochar treatments were decreased, but the rice cooking quality was significantly increased.
