Abstract:In this paper we obtain three undecidable results for exponential diophantine equations over the field Q of rational numbers. For example, we prove that there is no algorithm to decide the solvability of a general exponential diophantine equation F (x1, . . . , x8) = 0 over Q with eight unknowns.

Abstract:Let Z be the ring of integers. Hilbert’s Tenth Problem (HTP), the tenth one of his 23 famous mathematical problems presented in the 1900 ICM, asks for an algorithm to determine for any given polynomial P (x1, . . . , xn) ∈ Z[x1, . . . , xn] whether the diophantine equation P (x1, . . . , xn) = 0 has solutions x1, . . . , xn ∈ Z. This was solved negatively by Yu. Matiyasevich [10] in 1970, on the basis of the important work of M. Davis, H. Putnam and J. Robinson [6]; see also Davis [5] for a nice introduction. Z.-W. Sun [15] proved his 11 unknowns theorem which states that there is no algorithm to determine for any P (x1, . . . , x11) ∈ Z[x1, . . . , x11] whether the equation P (x1, . . . , x11) = 0 has solutions over Z. Let Q be the field of rational numbers. It remains open whether HTP over Q is undecidable. However, J. Abstract:Let $f\in {\mathbb {Q}}[X]$ be a polynomial without multiple roots and $deg(f)\ge 2$. We consider the Diophantine equation $f(x)f(y)=f(z^2)$. For two classes of irreducible quadratic polynomials, this equation has infinitely many nontrivial integer solutions, if the corresponding Pell’s equations satisfy a condition. For a special cubic polynomial, it has a one-parameter family of rational solutions. For $f(X)=X(X^2+X+k)$ and $X(X^2+kX+1)$ there are infinitely many $k \in {\mathbb {Q}}$ such that the title equation has rational solutions.
Mixed quantifier prefixes over Diophantine equations with integer variables

Abstract:In this paper we first review the history of Hilbert's Tenth Problem, and then study mixed quantifier prefixes over Diophantine equations with integer variables. For example, we prove that $\forall^2\exists^4$ over $\mathbb Z$ is undecidable, that is, there is no algorithm to determine for any $P(x_1,\ldots,x_6)\in\mathbb Z[x_1,\ldots,x_6]$ whether $$\forall x_1\forall x_2\exists x_3\exists x_4\exists x_5\exists x_6(P(x_1,\ldots,x_6)=0),$$ where $x_1,\ldots,x_6$ are integer variables. We also have some similar undecidable results with universal quantifies bounded, for example, $\exists^2\forall^2\exists^2$ over $\mathbb Z$ with $\forall$ bounded is undecidable. We conjecture that $\forall^2\exists^2$ over $\mathbb Z$ is undecidable.

Abstract:We consider a variety of Euler's conjecture, i.e., whether the Diophantine system n=a_1+a_2+⋯+a_s-1, a_1a_2⋯ a_s-1(a_1+a_2+⋯+a_s-1)=b^s has solutions n,b,a_i∈ℤ^+,i=1,2,…,s-1,s≥ 3. By using the theory of elliptic curves, we prove that it has no solutions n,b,a_i∈ℤ^+ for s=3, but for s=4 it has infinitely many solutions n,b,a_i∈ℤ^+ and for s≥ 5 there are infinitely many polynomial solutions n,b,a_i∈ℤ[t_1,t_2,…,t_s-3] with positive value satisfying this Diophantine system.

Abstract:We consider a variety of Euler’s sum of powers conjecture, i.e., whether the Diophantine system $$\left\{{\matrix{{n = {a_1} + {a_2} + \ldots + {a_{s - 1}},} \hfill \cr {{a_1}{a_2} \ldots {a_{s - 1}}({a_1} + {a_2} + \ldots + {a_{s - 1}}) = {b^s}} \hfill \cr}} \right.$$ has positive integer or rational solutions n, b, aj, i = 1, 2, …, s − 1, s ⩾ 3. Using the theory of elliptic curves, we prove that it has no positive integer solution for s = 3, but there are infinitely many positive integers n such that it has a positive integer solution for s ⩾ 4. As a corollary, for s ⩾ 4 and any positive integer n, the above Diophantine system has a positive rational solution. Meanwhile, we give conditions such that it has infinitely many positive rational solutions for s ⩾ 4 and a fixed positive integer n.
Diophantine equations with three monomials

Abstract:We present a general algorithm for solving all two-variable polynomial Diophantine equations consisting of three monomials. Before this work, even the existence of an algorithm for solving the one-parameter family of equations $x^4+axy+y^3=0$ has been an open question. We also present an elementary method that reduces the task of finding all integer solutions to a general three-monomial equation to the task of finding primitive solutions to equations with three monomials in disjoint variables. We identify a large class of three-monomial equations for which this method leads to a complete solution. Empirical data suggests that this class contains $100\%$ of three-monomial equations as the number of variables goes to infinity.

In particular, we provide an integer-coefficient polynomial $p(x, y, z)$ whose only integer roots are consecutive triples of Tribonacci numbers.

Solving Polynomial Equations Over Finite Fields

Abstract:We present a randomized algorithm for solving low-degree polynomial equation systems over finite fields faster than exhaustive search. In order to do so, we follow a line of work by Lokshtanov, Paturi, Tamaki, Williams, and Yu (SODA 2017), Björklund, Kaski, and Williams (ICALP 2019), and Dinur (SODA 2021). In particular, we generalize Dinur's algorithm for $\mathbb{F}_2$ to all finite fields, in particular the "symbolic interpolation" of Björklund, Kaski, and Williams, and we use an efficient trimmed multipoint evaluation and interpolation procedure for multivariate polynomials over finite fields by Van der Hoeven and Schost (AAECC 2013). The running time of our algorithm matches that of Dinur's algorithm for $\mathbb{F}_2$ and is significantly faster than the one of Lokshtanov et al. for $q>2$. We complement our results with tight conditional lower bounds that, surprisingly, we were not able to find in the literature. In particular, under the strong exponential time hypothesis, we prove that it is impossible to solve $n$-variate low-degree polynomial equation systems over $\mathbb{F}_q$ in time $O((q-\varepsilon)^{n})$. As a bonus, we show that under the counting version of the strong exponential time hypothesis, it is impossible to compute the number of roots of a single $n$-variate low-degree polynomial over $\mathbb{F}_q$ in time ${O((q-\varepsilon)^{n})}$; this generalizes a result of Williams (SOSA 2018) from $\mathbb{F}_2$ to all finite fields.

Abstract:In this paper we find non-negative integer solutions for exponential Diophantine equations of the type $p \cdot 3^x+ p^y=z^2,$ where $p$ is a prime number. We prove that such equation has a unique solution $\displaystyle{(x,y,z)=\left(\log_3(p-2), 0, p-1\right)}$ if $2 \neq p \equiv 2 \pmod 3$ and $(x,y,z)=(0,1,2)$ if $p=2$. We also display the infinite solution set of that equation in the case $p=3$. Finally, a brief discussion of the case $p \equiv 1 \pmod 3$ is made, where we display an equation that does not have a non-negative integer solution and leave some open questions. The proofs are based on the use of the properties of the modular arithmetic.

Reverse engineered Diophantine equations

Abstract:We answer a question of Samir Siksek, asked at the open problems session of the conference ``Rational Points 2022'', which, in a broader sense, can be viewed as a reverse engineering of Diophantine equations. For any finite set $S$ of perfect integer powers, using Mihăilescu's theorem, we construct a polynomial $f_S\in \Z[x]$ such that the set $f_S(\Z)$ contains a perfect integer power if and only if it belongs to $S$. We first discuss the easier case where we restrict to all powers with the same exponent. In this case, the constructed polynomials are inspired by Runge's method and Fermat's Last Theorem. Therefore we can construct a polynomial-exponential Diophantine equation whose solutions are described in advance.

Abstract: In this paper, we consider some hybrid Diophantine equations of addition and multiplication. We first improve a result on new Hilbert-Waring problem. Then we consider the equation \begin{equation} \begin{cases} A+B=C ABC=D^n \end{cases} \end{equation} where $A,B,C,D,n \in\ZZ_{+}$ and $n\geq3$, which may be regarded as a generalization of Fermat's equation $x^n+y^n=z^n$. When $\gcd(A,B,C)=1$, $(1)$ is equivalent to Fermat's equation, which means it has no positive integer solutions. We discuss several cases for $\gcd(A,B,C)=p^k$ where $p$ is an odd prime. In particular, for $k=1$ we prove that $(1)$ has no nonzero integer solutions when $n=3$ and we conjecture that it is also true for any prime $n>3$. Finally, we consider equation $(1)$ in quadratic fields $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{t})$ for $n=3$.

Abstract:In this article, we show that the quartic Diophantine equations $x^4 \pm pqy^4=\pm z^2$ and $ x^4 \pm pq y^4= \pm iz^2$ have only trivial solutions for some primes $p$ and $q$ satisfying conditions $ p \equiv 3 \pmod 8, ~ q \equiv 1 \pmod 8 ~\text{and}~ \displaystyle\legendre{p}{q} = -1$. Here we have found the torsion of the two families of elliptic curves to find the solutions of given Diophantine equations. Moreover, we also calculate the rank of these two families of elliptic curves over the Gaussian field $\mathbb{Q}(i)$.

Abstract:In this paper, we develop a method of evaluating general exponential sums with rational amplitude functions for multiple variables which complements works by T. Cochrane and Z. Zheng on the single variable case. As an application, for $n\geq 2$, a fixed natural number, we obtain an asymptotic formula for the (weighted) number of solutions of quadratic congruences of the form $x_1^2+x_2^2+...+x_n^2\equiv x_{n+1}^2\bmod{p^m}$ in small boxes, thus establishing an equidistribution result for these solutions.

Abstract:Let $ n $ be a positive integer with $ n > 1 $ and let $ a, b $ be fixed coprime positive integers with $ \min\{a, b\} > 2 $. In this paper, using the Baker method, we proved that, for any $ n $, if $ a > \max\{15064b, b^{3/2}\} $, then the equation $ (an)^x+(bn)^y = ((a+b)n)^z $ has no positive integer solutions $ (x, y, z) $ with $ x > z > y $. Further, let $ A, B $ be coprime positive integers with $ \min\{A, B\} > 1 $ and $ 2|B $. Combining the above conclusion with some existing results, we deduced that, for any $ n $, if $ (a, b) = (A^2, B^2), A > \max\{123B, B^{3/2}\} $ and $ B\equiv 2\pmod 4 $, then this equation has only the positive integer solution $ (x, y, z) = (1, 1, 1). $ Thus, we proved that the conjecture proposed by Yuan and Han is true for this case.

Generalized Fruit Diophantine equation over number fields

Abstract:Let $K$ be a number field, and $\mathcal{O}_K$ be the ring of integers of $K$. In this article, we study the solutions of the generalized Fruit Diophantine equation $ax^d-y^2-z^2 +xyz-b=0$ over $K$, where $a\in \mathcal{O}_K\setminus \{0\}$, $b \in \mathcal{O}_K \setminus \{0\}$ with $b=2^da-3^r$ for positive odd integers $r,d$ with $3 |d$. As an application of this, we construct infinitely many elliptic curves over $K$ having no integral point $(x,y) \in \mathcal{O}_K^2$ with $2|x$. In particular, we study the solutions of $ax^d-y^2-z^2 +xyz-b=0$ over quadratic fields $K=\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{d})$, for square-free integers $d$. Further, we find explicit values of $d$ for the above result and calculate the density of such square-free integers $d$ with $d \geq 2$.
