Abstract:Au supported on TiO2 (Au/TiO2) catalysts have shown excellent activity in low-temperature water-gas-shift (LT-WGS) reaction; however, the effects of different crystalline phases of the support, the oxygen vacancies (O-v) on the support, and the metal-support synergy on the catalytic performance still remain indistinct. In this work, a combination of density functional theory (DFT) calculation, microkinetic modeling, and experimental investigation for the LT-WGS reaction mechanism over the Au-8 cluster supported on TiO2 with three crystalline phases (Au/ana-O-v, Au/rut-O-v, and Au/bro-O-v) is systematically performed. Notably, Au/ana-O-v gives the lowest energy barrier at each step of the WGS reaction, indicating a superior catalytic activity, and a redox pathway is confirmed: H2O undergoes the dissociation adsorption on O-v while interface Au serves as an active site for CO activation. The microkinetic modeling results confirm the favorable operating condition (p(H2O)/p(CO) <= 4) for this reaction. Furthermore, experimental researches verify that the Au/ana-Ov sample exhibits the optimum catalytic activity, which accords well with the prediction conclusions of theoretical calculation. This work provides the detailed information on the metal-support synergistic catalysis as well as the in-depth understanding of the reaction mechanism of LT-WGS over the Au/TiO2-x system, which would pave a way for the development of heterogeneous catalysts toward interface sensitive reactions.

Abstract:Support effects always attract extensive interesting in heterogenous catalysis. However, the same supports might not show same effects on different catalytic reactions, even the opposite. Here, we quantitatively analyzed the role of the percentage of {001} facets toward the water–gas shift (WGS) catalytic performances over Au-TiO2 catalysts. With increasing HF, the percentage of {001} gradually increase, while their catalytic activities gradually decrease following the sequence: Au-TiO2-HF0 > Au-TiO2-HF3 > Au-TiO2-HF9. For cyclic stability, Au-TiO2-HF0 showing somewhat low stability is due to increase in percentage of {001}, while Au-TiO2-HF3 and Au-TiO2-HF9 having high stability is because of decrease in the percentage of {001} albeit Au particle sintering. Accordingly, WGS activities of both fresh and used catalysts have good linear correlation with the percentage of {001} (negative correlation), the percentage of oxidized gold species (positive correlation) and the hydrogen consumption (positive correlation).

Abstract:The mechanism of a low-temperature water-gas shift reaction (LT-WGSR) over supported gold catalysts has long been disputed, with the two prevailing ones being redox and associative mechanisms, due to the rather limited direct and reliable evidence for the actual reaction route. Herein, a typical supported gold-based catalyst (Au@TiO2-x/ZnO) was obtained via a structural topotactic transformation from hydrotalcite precursors, exhibiting an extremely high catalytic performance towards LT-WGSR. A series of experimental measurements involving in situ/operando DRIFTS, in situ Pulse-MASS and in situ/operando EXAFS as well as density functional theory (DFT) calculations were carried out to monitor the dynamic evolution of active sites, detect reaction intermediates and identify the reaction route. A new redox reaction route derived from the interfacial synergistic catalysis was verified: one H2O molecule undergoes dissociation at an Au delta--O-v-Ti3+ (O-v: oxygen vacancy) interfacial active site, accompanied with the production of one H-2 molecule and the oxidation of the interfacial structure to Au-0-O-r-Ti4+ (O-r: the interfacial reactive oxygen species). Subsequently, one chemisorbed CO molecule captures O-r to produce CO2 with the recovery of Au delta--O-v-Ti3+. The present understanding and identification of the reaction mechanism of LT-WGSR would offer inspiration for further material exploration and catalyst design in gold-based heterogeneous catalysis.
Reactive Pt-TiN interfacial sites for H 2 O activation and the low-temperature water gas shift

Abstract:The reactive interfacial sites upon supported catalysts provide an alternative pathway to enable the reactants activation in an energetically favorable mode, thus decreasing the energy barrier and promoting the catalytic efficiency. By virtue of structural characterization, in-situ spectroscopic analysis, kinetic assessments and density functional theory (DFT) calculations, supported Pt/TiN catalysts are systematically studied to interrogate H 2 O activation on the Pt-TiN interfacial sites and its catalytic function during the low-temperature water gas shift (WGS). It is found that the partially oxygen-covered TiN surface is highly efficient for H 2 O activation by oxygen-assisted dissociation with an energy barrier of 0.41 eV, much less than that on metallic Pt surface. The formed hydroxyls binding on Ti sites, observed by in-situ X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and temperature programmed desorption (TPD), could readily react with the adjacent CO adsorbed on Pt clusters with the reaction energy barrier of 0.43 eV to attain the individual catalytic cycle. Benefiting from the enhanced H 2 O activation, the catalytic turnover rate of CO-H 2 O reaction on Pt/TiN is 3.8 and 20.3 times higher than that on traditional Pt/TiO 2 and Pt/SiO 2 at 403 K, respectively. The interfacial reactive sites are the origin of low-temperature WGS on Pt/TiN catalysts.

Abstract:The electronic metal-support interaction (EMSI) plays a crucial role in promoting catalytic performance toward interface electronic structure sensitive reactions, such as the low temperature water gas shift reaction (LT-WGSR). Herein, a mixed metal oxide support (ZnTi-MMO) was obtained via structural topological transformation from a zinc-titanium layered double hydroxides (ZnTi-LDHs) precursor, which was used for the immobilization of Au nanoparticles (NPs). Following a reduction pretreatment at 300 degrees C in a H-2 atmosphere, the resulting optimal catalyst Au@TiO2-x/ZnO(H300) exhibits a WGSR rate up to 0.15 mol(co) mol(Au)(-1) s(-1) which is at a high level compared with previously reported gold-based catalyst systems. Ac-HAADF-STEM combined with CO pulse chemisorption measurements verifies a TiO2-x overlayer on the surface of Au NPs. Quasi in situ XPS, EPR, in situ EXAFS, and in situ DRIFTS demonstrate the formation of interface dual-active-site (Au delta--O-v-Ti3+; O-v: oxygen vacancy) based on electron transfer from the TiO2-x overlayer to Au atoms, in which the electron-enriched Au delta- species enhance CO chemisorption while O-v-Ti3+ accelerates the dissociation of the H2O molecule, accounting for the largely enhanced catalytic activity and stability of Au@TiO2-x/ZnO(H300) compared with the traditional Au/TiO2 system. In situ/operando EXAFS further confirms that Au delta--O-v-Ti3+ interfacial site serves as the optimal active site toward WGSR: both Au delta- species and O-v directly participate in the rate-determining step of LT-WGSR (water dissociation). The discovery and identification of the interfacial active site in this system can be extended to other metal catalysts with largely promoted performance in heterogeneous catalysis.

Abstract:The mechanism on interfacial synergistic catalysis for supported metal catalysts has long been explored and investigated in several important heterogeneous catalytic processes (e.g., water-gas shift (WGS) reaction). The modulation of metal-support interactions imposes a substantial influence on activity and selectivity of catalytic reaction, as a result of the geometric/electronic structure of interfacial sites. Although great efforts have validated the key role of interfacial sites in WGS over metal catalysts supported on reducible oxides, direct evidence at the atomic level is lacking and the mechanism of interfacial synergistic catalysis is still ambiguous. Herein, Ni nanoparticles supported on TiO2-x (denoted as Ni@TiO2-x) were fabricated via a structure topotactic transformation of NiTi-layered double hydroxide (NiTi-LDHs) precursor, which showed excellent catalytic performance for WGS reaction. In situ microscopy was carried out to reveal the partially encapsulated structure of Ni@TiO2, catalyst. A combination study including in situ and operando EXAFS, in situ DRIFTS spectra combined with TPSR measurements substantiates a new redox mechanism based on interfacial synergistic catalysis. Notably, interfacial Ni species (electron -enriched Ni delta- site) participates in the dissociation of H2O molecule to generate H-2, accompanied by the oxidation of Ni delta--O-v-Ti3+ (O-v: oxygen vacancy) to Ni delta+-O-Ti4+ structure. Density functional theory calculations further verify that the interfacial sites of Ni@ TiO2-x catalyst serve as the optimal active site with the lowest activation energy barrier (similar to 0.35 eV) for water dissociation. This work provides a fundamental understanding on interfacial synergistic catalysis toward WGS reaction, which is constructive for the rational design and fabrication of high activity heterogeneous catalysts.
Titania-Morphology-Dependent Pt–TiO2 Interfacial Catalysis in Water-Gas Shift Reaction

Abstract:The bifunctional role of the noble-metal-oxide interface in activating reactants is important for efficient heterogeneous catalysis of the water-gas shift (WGS) reaction. Herein, we report that the morphology of the TiO2 support strongly affects the Pt-TiO2 interfacial catalysis for the WGS reaction using Pt nanoparticles of similar sizes supported on anatase TiO2 nanocrystals with various morphologies predominantly exposing {001} facets (denoted TiO2{001}), {100} facets (denoted TiO2{100}), and {101} facets (denoted TiO2{101}). CO conversions follow the order Pt/TiO2{100} approximate to Pt/TiO2{101} > Pt/ TiO2{001}, but the apparent activation energies are similar for Pt/TiO2{100}, Pt/TiO2{101}, and Pt/TiO2{001} catalysts. Characterization results show that the Pt/TiO2{001} catalyst exhibits fewer surface oxygen vacancies and consequently active Pt-Ov,TiO2 interfacial ensemble sites than Pt/TiO2{100} and Pt/TiO2{101} catalysts. This can be attributed to the fact that oxygen vacancies are more stable in the bulk of TiO2{001} than on the surface but are more stable on the surface of TiO2{100} and TiO2{101} than in the bulk and to the fact that carbonate and bicarbonate spectators accumulate at the Pt-TiO2 interface at the Pt/TiO2{001} catalyst but barely accumulate the at Pt/TiO2{100} and Pt/TiO2{101} catalysts. Both lead to the poorer catalytic activity of Pt/TiO2{001} catalyst for catalyzing the WGS reaction. These results provide insights into a fundamental understanding of the activity-structure relation of Pt/TiO2 catalysts for the WGS reaction.

Abstract:Our group recently developed a series of Au/M x O y /TiO 2 catalysts for CO oxidation, and demonstrated that some of these catalysts are still active after high-temperature treatment whereas Au/TiO 2 deactivates significantly due to the sintering of gold nanoparticles at elevated temperatures (Ma Z, Overbury SH, Dai S (2007) J Mol Catal A 273:97). In the current work, the performance of Au/M x O y /TiO 2 (M = Al, Ca, Fe, Zn, Ga, Y, Zr, La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm, Eu, Gd, Dy, Ho, Er, Yb) catalysts in water-gas shift (WGS) reaction was evaluated. The influences of different metal oxide (M x O y ) additives and pretreatment temperatures were investigated, and the catalyst stability as a function of reaction time on stream was tested. Some of these novel gold catalysts, with high activity and stability in water-gas shift, furnish new possibilities for further fundamental research and industrial development.
TiO2–x-Modified Ni Nanocatalyst with Tunable Metal–Support Interaction for Water–Gas Shift Reaction

Abstract:The modulation of strong metal-support interaction (SMSI) plays a key role and remains a challenge in achieving the desired catalytic performance in many important chemical reactions. Herein, we report a TiO2-x-modified Ni nanocatalyst with tunable Ni-TiO2-x interaction via a two-step procedure: preparation of Ni/Ti mixed metal oxide (NiTi-MMO) from NiTi-layered double hydroxide (NiTi-LDH) precursor, followed by a further reduction treatment at different temperatures. A combination study (XRD, TEM, H2-TPR, XPS, and in situ EXAFS) verifies that a high reduction temperature enhances the Ni-TiO2-x interaction, which results in an increased coverage degree of Ni nanoparticles by TiO2-x as well as electron density of interfacial Ni (Nis-). Moreover, the creation of a Ni delta-,-O-v-Ti3+ interface site (O-nu denotes oxygen vacancy) induced by strong Ni-TiO2-x interaction serves as dual-active site to efficiently catalyze the water-gas shift reaction (WGSR). The optimized catalyst (Ni@TiO2-x(450)) via tuning Ni-TiO2-x interaction gives a TOF value of 3.8 s(-1) which is similar to 7 times larger than the conventional 15%Ni/TiO2(450) catalyst. Such a high catalytic efficiency is attributed to the interfacial site (Ni delta-,O-nu-Ti3+) with medium strength of metal-support interaction, as revealed by in situ diffuse reflectance Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (in situ DRIFTS), which promotes the synergic catalysis between Ni delta- and oxygen vacancy toward WGSR.

Herein, we experimentally demon-strated that the coordination environment of PtAu dual atoms could be facilely regulated by engineering the exposed facets of TiO2 supports. Due to the metal-support interactions originated from coordinatively unsaturated sites, atomic cocatalysts were anchored onto {001}-TiO2 through Pt-O and Au-O bonds, while {101}-TiO2 was preferential for Pt-O and Au nanoparticles. The dual-atom cocatalyzed PtAu/{001}-TiO2 presented a 1000-fold increase in the H-2 evolution rate compared to blank {001}-TiO2, which was even 4 times higher than PtAu/{101}-TiO2. The enhancement mechanism relies on the synergy of PtAu dual-atom cocatalysts, which can mutually optimize the electronic states of both Pt and Au sites to decrease the Gibbs free energies of hydrogen adsorption. Particularly, the Pt atom is activated by the Au atom and the activity of catalysts is further enhanced through the dimer interaction. The strategy of neighboring interactive bimetallic sites provides emerging opportunities for the rational design of high-performance catalysts with atomically engineered electronic states.

Abstract:The water-gas shift (WGS) reaction (where carbon monoxide plus water yields dihydrogen and carbon dioxide) is an essential process for hydrogen generation and carbon monoxide removal in various energy-related chemical operations. This equilibrium-limited reaction is favored at a low working temperature. Potential application in fuel cells also requires a WGS catalyst to be highly active, stable, and energy-efficient and to match the working temperature of on-site hydrogen generation and consumption units. We synthesized layered gold (Au) clusters on a molybdenum carbide (α-MoC) substrate to create an interfacial catalyst system for the ultralow-temperature WGS reaction. Water was activated over α-MoC at 303 kelvin, whereas carbon monoxide adsorbed on adjacent Au sites was apt to react with surface hydroxyl groups formed from water splitting, leading to a high WGS activity at low temperatures.

Abstract:Since the pioneering finding by Haruta et al. that small gold nanoparticles on reducible supports can be highly active for low-temperature CO oxidation, the synthesis, characterization, and application of supported gold catalysts have attracted much attention. The water-gas shift reaction (WGSR: CO + H2O = CO2 + H2) is important for removing CO and upgrading the purity of H2 for fuel cell applications, ammonia synthesis, and selective hydrogenation processes. In recent years, much attention has been paid to exploration the possibility of using supported gold nanocatalysts for WGSR and understanding the fundamental aspects related to catalyst deactivation mechanisms, nature of active sites, and reaction mechanisms. Here we summarize recent advances in the development of supported gold catalysts for this reaction and fundamental insights that can be gained, and furnish our assessment on the status of research progress.

Abstract:Au catalysts have shown outstanding low temperature catalytic activity toward water-gas shift (WGS) reaction, but they are struggling with the durability concerns. Herein, Pt clusters are selectively located on Au/CeO2 through atomic layer deposition method to activate the interfacial active sites poisoned by intermediate species. The selective method effectively avoids the coverage of Au surface sites by Pt atoms and maintains the low temperature catalytic activity of Au/CeO2 catalyst. Durability test indicates that the Pt-activated Au/CeO2 catalyst shows superior durability in WGS atmosphere (200 ºC), which only attenuates 7.9% (from 78.0% to 70.1%) after 150hours. The analysis of surface intermediates and density functional theory calculations reveal that the introduction of Pt ensures the regenerative capacity of Au/CeO2 active sites by facilitating the decomposition of intermediate species and the desorption of CO2.

Abstract:Ultra-small platinum nanoparticles loaded over titania is a promising catalyst for the low-temperature water-gas shift (WGS) reaction and shows the potential to work in a mobile hydrogen fuel cell system. Their precise size engineering (<3 nm) and reliable stabilization remain challenging. To address these issues, we report a reverse-micelle synthesis approach, which affords uniform ultra-small platinum nanoparticles (tunable in ∼1.0-2.6 nm) encapsulated in hollow titania nanospheres with a shell thickness of only ∼3-5 nm and an overall diameter of only ∼32 nm. The Pt@TiO2 yolk/shell nanostructured catalysts display extraordinary stability and monotonically increasing activity with the decreasing size of the Pt nanoparticles in the WGS. The size-dependent variation in the electronic property of the Pt nanoparticles and the reducible oxide encapsulation that prevents the Pt nanoparticles from sintering are ascribed as the main reasons for the excellent catalytic performance.

Abstract:A synergistic effect between individual components is crucial for increasing the activity of metal/metal oxide catalysts. The greatest challenge is how to control the synergistic effect to obtain enhanced catalytic performance. Through density functional theory calculations of model Au/TiO2 catalysts, it is suggested that there is strong interaction between Au nanoparticles and Ti species at the edge/corner sites of anatase, which is favorable for the formation of stable oxygen vacancies. Motivated by this theoretical analysis, we have rationally prepared Au nanoparticles attached to edge/corner sites of anatase support (Au/TiO2-EC), confirmed by their HR-TEM images. As expected, this strong interaction is well characterized by Raman, UV-visible, and XPS techniques. Very interestingly, compared with conventional Au catalysts, Au/TiO2-EC exhibits superior catalytic activity in the oxidations using O2. Our approach to controlling Au nanoparticle positioning on anatase to obtain enhanced catalytic activity offers an efficient strategy for developing more novel supported metal catalysts.
How Do Structurally Distinct Au/α‐Fe2O3 Interfaces Determine Surface OH/H2O Reactivity, Intermediate Evolution, and Product Formation in Low‐temperature Water‐gas Shift Reaction?

Abstract:Three structurally distinct interfaces, i. e. Au/alpha-Fe2O3-THB-Air, Au/alpha-Fe2O3-HS-Air, and Au/alpha-Fe2O3-QC-Air, with the major substrate facet being {113}, {001}, and {012} respectively, were controllably prepared. The low temperature water gas shift (WGS) reaction (100-260 degrees C) was applied to these unique systems to reveal how these structurally distinct interfaces can impact on the reaction behavior. With the detailed performance evaluation plus the characterizations of CO-TPSR, XPS, and in situ-FTIR in particular, the correlations between the evolution of different intermediates and the distinct catalytic behaviors have been established. The substrate facet structure and the Au entity largely determine the form and reactivity of surface OH/H2O species which in turn determine the formation of different intermediates and eventually the product formation. The Au/alpha-Fe2O3-THB-Air is enriched with oxygen vacant sites, favorable for dissociative adsorption of H2O, carboxyl intermediate formation and H-2 production. The Au/alpha-Fe2O3-HS-Air is enriched with surface lattice oxygen, favorable for molecular adsorption of H2O, formate intermediate formation, and CO2 production. The Au/alpha-Fe2O3-QC-Air interface is enriched with surface Fe sites, favorable for dissociative adsorption of H2O and evolution of stable carboxyl intermediate as well as isolated OH species at low reaction temperatures. The findings are informative to control the interfacial structure for the WGS and other reactions.

Abstract:Abstract Oxide-supported noble metal catalysts have been extensively studied for decades for the water gas shift (WGS) reaction, a catalytic transformation central to a host of large volume processes that variously utilize or produce hydrogen. There remains considerable uncertainty as to how the specific features of the active metal-support interfacial bonding—perhaps most importantly the temporal dynamic changes occurring therein—serve to enable high activity and selectivity. Here we report the dynamic characteristics of a Pt/CeO 2 system at the atomic level for the WGS reaction and specifically reveal the synergistic effects of metal-support bonding at the perimeter region. We find that the perimeter Pt 0 − O vacancy−Ce 3+ sites are formed in the active structure, transformed at working temperatures and their appearance regulates the adsorbate behaviors. We find that the dynamic nature of this site is a key mechanistic step for the WGS reaction.
