Abstract:Computational thinking (CT) is valued as a thinking process that is required to adapt to the development of curriculum in primary education. In the context of modern information technology, English as a language subject emphasizes the necessity for changes in both learning and teaching modes. However, there is a lack of up-to-date synthesis research and a comprehensive overview surrounding CT integrated into English language curriculum learning and teaching in primary education. To address this research gap, this study conducted a systematic literature review on CT in the primary English curriculum, based on papers published from 2011 to 2021. The purpose of this review is to systematically examine and present empirical evidence on how CT can be integrated into the teaching and learning of the primary English language curriculum in educational contexts. The review was conducted based on the PRISMA 2020 statement and presents a synthesis of 32 articles. The CT-TPACK model was adopted as a lens and framework to analyze these articles. The results indicate that the relationship among CT, content knowledge of English language curriculum, pedagogy and learning knowledge, technology and resources is highlighted. Research on the integration of CT into English courses using unplugged activities is still insufficient. The research about how teachers and students use CT to support content knowledge of the English language curriculum in various educational contexts is still in its infancy.

Abstract:The current single teaching and assessing modes of English as a foreign language (EFL) grammar in China have caused the disconnect between grammar knowledge and competency with numerous errors in essay writing, somehow ignoring the analysis of learners thinking patterns. To solve the problem, computational thinking (CT), a higher-order thinking in solving problems and optimizing the way to acquire knowledge, was employed in the study. As needed, the experimental group was taught using the CT teaching model following CT principal elements (data analysis, pattern recognition, abstraction, decomposition, and parallelization), while the control group followed the traditional teaching mode. Quantitative and qualitative data were obtained based on the pre-test-post-test, classroom observation, and questionnaire survey. The results show that the grammar application in short essay writing of all the members of the experimental group significantly improved and that higher grammar learning agency and engagement were unfolded to show the changes of thinking patterns. However, not all the members from the control group showed similar results. CT serves as an important social mediation tool in EFL teaching. This study further enriches the teaching modes of grammar and is an effective attempt at introducing CT into learners’ thinking patterns.

Abstract:Our study documents how a Spanish-English bilingual elementary teacher learned computational thinking while working to incorporate it into mathematics and language arts lessons in a bilingual classroom. We classified the elements of the teacher's process into two practices: intentional and unintentional use of computational thinking. Intentional use of computational thinking included the teacher's explicit incorporation of any of the four computational thinking elements (abstraction, algorithms, decomposition, and patterns) into her teaching practice. The unintentional use of computational thinking included those instances where the teacher used computational thinking as a means for teaching content not specifically oriented toward computational thinking. In addition, our work identifies how this bilingual teacher's instructional dynamics integrated computational thinking and Spanish in a nearly inseparable manner. With this work we intend to contribute to the emergent scholarship committed to understanding the promotion of learning computing in K-5 settings.

Abstract:Computational thinking is the key to cultivating students' core literacy in the information age, and it is also an important entry point to promote the reform of information technology curriculum. In order to understand the development trend of computational thinking cultivation of primary school students in China in the past 13 years, this paper took CNKI as the data source to statistically analyze the published literature in China. From the perspectives of the number of literatures, publishing institutions, authors, etc., this paper reviews the research on the cultivation of computational thinking among primary school students in China in the past 13 years. This paper puts forward the problems and thoughts existing in the research on the cultivation of computational thinking of primary school students from the aspects of research theme, research content and research methods.

Abstract:Computational thinking (CT) is an essential component of critical skills for university students, representing the ability to analyze and solve problems. In accordance with constructivist learning theory and the core elements of cultivating CT, this research has developed a Project-Based Teaching approach with computational thinking as its focal point. The focus of this study centered on the effectiveness of this approach in enhancing students' CT abilities, particularly within the context of the "Computer Assembly and Maintenance" course, during a 16-week teaching experiment. Additionally, the study investigated the influence of gender on CT abilities. Using a pre-test/post-test design, the research has revealed significant differences in the development of CT under the two treatment conditions. The results indicated that project-based teaching significantly contributes to the development of students' CT abilities. The experimental group outperformed the traditional teaching group significantly in the areas of collaboration, problem-solving, and critical thinking. Furthermore, project-based teaching had a positive impact on the CT of university students of different genders. This research provided valuable insights for educational reform and practice, offering important guidance for enhancing students' CT abilities and educational quality.

Abstract:With the prevalence1 of the computational thinking, Chinese colleges and universities adopt this concept into their elementary computer teaching for cultivating students' thinking and application ability, which strongly support the students' development. Therefore, it is very important to evaluate the effectiveness of computational thinking in the elementary computer courses. Through such an evaluation, we can obtain the objective data which reflects the teaching effect of elementary computer courses, establish scientific teaching evaluation matrices, and emphasize the importance of those courses. In this paper, we investigate the teaching effectiveness for achieve accurate data and decision support on the computational-thinking-oriented computer curriculum reform. Our research is based on recent evaluations and data acquisition. We analyze the test database, categories of questions, and scores of students. We find several problems, such as the over-emphasizing the programming, incomplete knowledge components, limited background, large deviation of evaluation results among universities. Finally, we give several improvement recommendations.

Abstract:This paper examines a method which can be used by instructors pursuing innovative methods for language teaching, which expands learners’ motivation in second language learning. Computational thinking (CT) is a problem-solving skill which can motivate students’ English language learning. Designing a learning activity which integrates CT into English language learning has been considered in only a few academic studies. This study aimed to explore whether integrating CT into English language learning can be useful for improving learners’ motivation and performance. The method of “present, practice, and produce” was applied as a method of presenting computational thinking in the English language learning classroom. Fifty-two elementary school students (52) participated in the experimental study. Following an experimental design, data were collected and analyzed from a combination of knowledge test scores, storytelling, motivation, and anxiety surveys. The experimental results indicate that the CT strategy improves students’ language learning and raises their motivation in the two dimensions of extrinsic and intrinsic goal orientation. These results imply the positive effect of CT strategy on strengthening problem-solving skills of students participating in digital storytelling and increases their motivation and performance in English language learning.

Abstract:The lack of teachers and equipment is a major obstacle to the implementation of Computational Thinking (CT) in education, particularly for rural schools. Although CT education has been investigated for many years, less attention has been paid to lower primary schools in rural areas. This study contributes to filling this gap by investigating the impact of three different learning approaches on the CT of grade-two primary school students in a rural area in China. Seventy-seven students were randomly assigned to three learning approaches, namely traditional lectures, Game-Based Learning (GBL) using a newly designed board game in classrooms, and GBL with parental involvement. The findings showed that both GBL approaches (i.e., with and without parents) significantly enhanced the students' CT skills compared to the traditional approach. The findings also showed that the GBL approach with parental involvement significantly enhanced students' attitudes toward learning CT compared with the other two approaches.

Abstract:Promoting the integration innovation of intelligent technology and classroom teaching is an inevitable choice for current primary and secondary schools to implement precise burden reduction and efficiency improvement. In view of the practical needs of classroom reform under the background of “Double Reduction” policy, this study explores the design method and implementation steps of intelligent technology empowering primary school English project-based learning. Firstly, this study clears the intelligent technology empowering primary school English project-based learning is: collaborate with digital intelligence determine project themes, immersive environment realizes the reality of language situation, exploration tools facilitate visualization of project activities and intelligent evaluation drives project evaluation diversification; Then, the “theme-implementation-evaluation” design framework and method are constructed. The teaching practice is carried out with the help of intelligent tools such as “Baidu Translation” and “Fun Dubbing”, and the implementation steps and operating procedures are summarized. Finally, results show that it can improve students' comprehensive application ability and the core literacy of English, and cultivate students' collaborative problem-solving ability.

Computational thinking for teachers: Development of a localised E-learning system

Abstract:Malaysia has introduced computational thinking skills as part of a curriculum integration update to meet the global trends in 21st-century education, focusing on empowering digital literacy. Nevertheless, a preliminary investigation revealed an apparent lack of understanding of computational thinking skills in general among teachers. The study explores the feasibility of developing a localized E-learning system to train computational thinking skills among teachers. An E-learning system, termed as myCTGWBL, was developed on the basis of a newly proposed conceptual framework to present computational thinking teaching–learning repertoire to the teachers. The hypothesis is that myCTGWBL would develop teachers' computational thinking and its position in teaching–learning understanding. myCTGWBL relevance was tested through DeLone and McLean's information system and Urbach's collaboration quality construct. To determine the success factors, partial least squares structural equation modeling was used. A total of 369 teachers participated in a two-stage survey. Participants' understanding of computational thinking and perceptions were recorded at the pre- and post-intervention phases. Open-ended questions of the surveys were analyzed using a simple text analysis technique. The closed-ended questions surveys were analyzed using SPSS Statistics 22.0. A significant improvement in teachers' computational thinking teaching–learning repertoire in a relatively short period has been recorded. Teachers also demonstrated increased confidence in the future delivering computational thinking-based lessons. The E-learning conceptual framework has illustrated the predictive power between user intent, user satisfaction, and Computational thinking (CT) knowledge benefits. Results demonstrate that myCTGWBL could be used to guide future planning when establishing CT knowledge acquisition initiatives, particularly among teachers.

Abstract:Computational Thinking(CT)has become one of the basic abilities that everyone should possess in 21 Century. With the importance of computing and its reforming force intensifying in social life, K-12 is beginning to become a new front for the cultivation of CT. Based on the analysis of related literatures and practices in CT cultivation at K-12 phase, the cognitions and un-derstandings of CT in practice are sorted out and summarized, and related concepts such as programming thinking are distinguished. From the perspectives of curriculum/project,standards,research institutions,implementation tools and teacher training,the develop-ments of CT in various countries are summarized, also with the interdisciplinary application of CT. The emphasis is put on the devel-opment of standard systems and evaluation methods used in CT practice. Some suggestions are put forward for the implementation of CT cultivation in K-12 in China from three aspects of core tasks,important goals and key tasks of CT cultivation.

Abstract:With the vigorous development of social economy in China, various advanced technologies and equipment have emerged, among which artificial intelligence (AI) has rapidly developed and achieved remarkable results when applied to many fields. Therefore, leaders and teachers in primary and secondary schools should pay more attention to AI education and explore effective measures to optimize the effectiveness of this education. Among them, carrying out artificial intelligence education and teaching from the perspective of thinking quality, with an aim to improve students’ technical ability and effectively cultivate their thinking skills, may improve students’ learning efficiency and teachers’ teaching efficiency. How to carry out AI education from the perspective of thinking quality is an important issue that teachers need to address urgently. Through in-depth research, we focus on this issue, in hope to benefit primary and secondary school teachers.

Abstract:As computer science has become a vital power in facilitating the rapid and sustainable development of various fields, equipping everyone with computational thinking (CT) has been recognized as one of the core pillars supporting the sustainable development of individuals and our digital world. However, it remains challenging for secondary school students to assimilate CT. Recently, critical reflection has been proposed as a useful metacognitive strategy for regulating students’ thinking to solve current and future problems. In this study, a quasi-experiment was conducted to investigate the role of critical reflection in advancing eighth-grade students’ CT. The participants were 95 eighth-grade students, comprising an experimental group (n = 49) and a control group (n = 46). The students’ CT was evaluated based on their learning performance in computational concepts, computational practices, and computational perspectives. The results showed that critical reflection, compared with traditional instruction from teachers, could significantly advance eighth-grade students’ CT. Interestingly, the two groups showed significantly different learning performance in computational practices during the learning process. Furthermore, interaction with peers and instructors played an essential role in helping students engage as active agents in critical reflection. The results of this study emphasize the need to develop students’ CT by practicing critical reflection in eighth-grade education.

Abstract:It is widely accepted that computer foundation course will benefit from the research and application of Computational Thinking in China. It is in fact that most research work in Computation Thinking have served for students but much less for teachers. College teachers in China took less systematic training in order to adequately prepare them for increasingly higher teaching requirements. To address this issue, this paper first proposes an outcomes-based teacher education program distinguished from CT principles under teaching and learning perspective, decomposed an abstract computational thinking idea into a definite coursework content. This paper then describe an outcomes-based evaluative frame which supports teachers to ensure a successful application of CT theories and concepts into practical skill development. Results from practice showed that the current research work is effective and widely accepted for which evidence is also provided.

Abstract:INTRODUCTION: There is no consensus of what skills can be developed from the learning of Computation Thinking (CT). However, teachers and researchers agreed that by the learning of CT individuals can acquire and expand many abilities. Courses have been carried out in Brazil and in other countries with the aim of motivating teachers on adding CT to classroom practices. OBJECTIVE: This article to present a case study that investigated the feasibility of introducing activities of CT for primary school children. Such activities were created and mediated by the teachers of Primary School. METHOD: First, a continuing education course about Computational Thinking was conducted with the participation of 14 teachers. The participants could understand the fundamentals of CT, and consequently, became able to planning and conducting CT activities by themselves in their classrooms. After, we analyzed the data gathered during the course under the quantitative and qualitative lenses. RESULTS: The results showed that the participants had a degree of agreement between 56% and 71% regarding the understanding and applicability of CT to developing skills in Primary School. The qualitative findings revealed that the participants could prepare activities that linked CT to topics presented in the subjects of Primary School. Besides, we could identify three patterns of shaping the activities in which this "computational think" were incorporated. CONCLUSION: Practices to stimulate the CT in students are mediated by using different teaching strategies as such Gamification and Culture Maker. These activities also enable the development of skills related to the National Curricular Common Base
