Abstract:Frustrated Lewis Pairs (FLPs) were widely used as metal-free catalysts in current chemistry. More and more researches began to focus on heterogeneous FLPs to meet industrial production needs. Nevertheless, these reported heterogeneous FLPs were mostly constructed based on solid-state Lewis bases (LB) combined with small molecule Lewis acids (LA), such as B(C6F5)3 , 6 F 5 ) 3 , which led to incomplete recovery of more expensive LA. In order to construct heterogeneous FLPs with stability and cyclicity based on solid LA, herein, we propose the strategy of first preparing heterogeneous COFs-B(C6F5)2 6 F 5 ) 2 (solid LA) by reducing part of the C=N =N bonds on COFs through H-B (C6F5)2 , 6 F 5 ) 2 , followed by introducing 1,8-diazabicycloundecano-7-ene (DBU) to construct semi-solid heterogeneous FLPs COFs-B(C6F5)2/DBU. 6 F 5 ) 2 /DBU. Simultaneously, these FLPs catalysts showed excellent catalytic performance in the field of terminal alkyne hydrogenation to olefins and could be cycled 8 times without loss of catalytic activity.

Abstract:Frustrated Lewis Pairs (FLPs) catalysts have been widely designed and synthesized in current chemistry, with the key being the selection of boron-based Lewis acids. Among novel boron-based Lewis acids, boron cations with higher Lewis acidity caused by cationic charge have been proven to have special reactivity. However, the current boron cations have only been used to construct homogeneous FLPs, which would be difficult to meet the industrial process demand for FLPs catalysts, possibly due to the lack of suitable stabilizers. In this paper, we propose a strategy to construct heterogeneous FLPs using covalent organic frameworks (COFs) stabilized boron cations as Lewis acid. Firstly, heterogeneous Lewis acid COFs@[B(C6F5)2]+[Al2Cl7]- was prepared by stabilizing boron cations with C=N bonds in COFs, followed by introducing tBu3P to construct heterogeneous FLPs COFs@[B(C6F5)2]+[Al2Cl7]-/tBu3P. Meanwhile, these FLPs catalysts exhibited excellent catalytic and cyclic performance in the preparation of cyclic carbonates by CO2 addition from epoxy compounds.
Locking Covalent Organic Frameworks with Hydrogen Bonds: General and Remarkable Effects on Crystalline Structure, Physical Properties, and Photochemical Activity.

Abstract:A series of two-dimensional covalent organic frameworks (2D COFs) locked with intralayer hydrogen-bonding (H-bonding) interactions were synthesized. The H-bonding interaction sites were located on the edge units of the imine-linked tetragonal porphyrin COFs, and the contents of the H-bonding sites in the COFs were synthetically tuned using a three-component condensation system. The intralayer H-bonding interactions suppress the torsion of the edge units and lock the tetragonal sheets in a planar conformation. This planarization enhances the interlayer interactions and triggers extended π-cloud delocalization over the 2D sheets. Upon AA stacking, the resulting COFs with layered 2D sheets amplify these effects and strongly affect the physical properties of the material, including improving their crystallinity, enhancing their porosity, increasing their light-harvesting capability, reducing their band gap, and enhancing their photocatalytic activity toward the generation of singlet oxygen. These remarkable effects on the structure and properties of the material were observed for both freebase and metalloporphyin COFs. These results imply that exploration of supramolecular ensembles would open a new approach to the structural and functional design of COFs.

Abstract:The synthesis of crystalline polyphenylene covalent organic frameworks (COFs) was accomplished by linking fluorinated tris(4-acetylphenyl)benzene building units using aldol cyclotrimerization. The structures of two COFs, reported here, were confirmed by powder X-ray diffraction techniques, Fourier-transform infrared, and solid-state 13C CP/MAS NMR spectroscopy. The results showed that the COFs were porous and chemically stable in corrosive, harsh environments for at least 1 week. Accordingly, post-synthetically modified derivatives of these COFs using primary amines showed CO2 uptake from air and flue gas.

Abstract:Homoallylamine COFs are synthesized via a Hosomi–Sakurai reaction in a one‐pot multicomponent reaction creating a C‐N linkage in a single step using scandium triflate as catalyst. The TAPB‐COF series demonstrates high chemical and thermal stability and shows efficient adsorption toward per‐ and polyfluoroalkyl substances in water. One‐pot multicomponent reactions (MCRs) are a valuable strategy to synthesize functional covalent organic frameworks (COFs) in a single step. Most reported COF syntheses involve solvothermal processes, and because of the harsh reaction conditions, such as high temperature or high pressure, large‐scale production of COFs has been limited. The synthesis of homoallylamine substituted COFs via a one‐pot Hosomi–Sakurai reaction is reported. At room temperature the reaction of allyltriethylgermane with either terephthalaldehyde or [1,1′‐biphenyl]‐4,4′‐dicarbaldehyde, and 1,3,5‐tris(4‐aminophenyl)benzene (TAPB) is catalyzed by Sc(OTf)3 to produce two COFs: TAPB‐1P‐Allyl COF and TAPB‐BP‐Allyl COF. The allyl functionalized COFs shows high crystallinity, with micropores ranging from 3.2 to 3.9 nm, for TAPB‐1P‐Allyl COF and TAPB‐BP‐Allyl COF respectively, and both COFs are hydrolytically stable at different pH levels. Post‐synthetic modification of these COFs with iodomethane produces methylated cationic COFs that demonstrates >98% adsorption efficiencies below the detection limit of perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and perfluorodecanoic acid (PFDA) from aqueous solutions. After four cycles adsorption efficiency remains high with concentrations of PFOA below the detection limit.

Abstract:The synthesis of phosphine‐based functional covalent organic frameworks (COFs) has attracted great attention recently. Here, we present two examples of triphenylphosphine‐based COFs (termed as P‐COFs) with well‐defined crystalline structures, high specific surface areas and good thermal stability. Furthermore, the rhodium catalysts using the obtained P‐COFs as support materials show high turnover frequency (TOF) for the hydroformylation of olefins, as well as the excellent recycling performance. This work not only extended phosphine‐based COFs family, but also demonstrated their application in immobilizing homogeneous metal‐based (e.g., Rh‐phosphine) catalysts for heterogeneous catalysis application.

Abstract:The concept of "Frustrated Lewis pairs" (FLPs), which emerged from the discovery that H2 can be reversibly activated by combinations of sterically encumbered Lewis acids and bases. Since then, the field of FLP chemistry has expanded enormously. One of the most remarkable achievements is the development of FLP catalysts for hydrogenation, which are environmentally friendly and have potential industrial application prospects. In recent years, this unique catalysis concept has pushed the study of FLP chemistry to a new direction: heterogeneous FLP catalysts. This review outlines the recent research progress of new strategies to design and synthesize heterogeneous FLPs for hydrogenation reaction, and prospects the development of novel heterogeneous FLP catalysts.

Abstract:Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are a type of crystalline porous polymers and possess ordered structures and eternal pores. Because of the unique structural characters and diverse functional groups, COFs have been used in various application fields, such as adsorption, catalysis, separation, ion conduction, and energy storage. Among COFs, the fluorine‐containing COFs (fCOFs) have been developed for special applications by virtue of special physical and chemical properties resulted by fluorine element, which is a nonmetallic halogen element and possesses strong electronegativity. In organic chemistry field, introducing fluorine into chemicals enables chemicals to exhibit many interesting properties, and fluorine chemistry increasingly plays an important role in the history of chemical development. The introduction of fluorine in COFs can enhance the crystallinity, porosity, and stability of COFs, making COFs show superior performances and some new applications. In this review, the synthesis and application of fCOFs are systematically summarized. The application involves photocatalytic production of hydrogen peroxide, photocatalytic water splitting, electrocatalytic CO2 reduction, adsorption for different substances (H2, pesticides, per‐/polyfluoroalkyl substances, polybrominated diphenyl ethers, bisphenols, and positively charged organic dye molecules), oil−water separation, energy storage (e.g., zinc‐ion batteries, lithium−sulfur batteries), and proton conduction. Abstract:Catalysis plays a crucial role in advancing sustainability. The unique reactivity of frustrated Lewis pairs (FLPs) is driving an ever-growing interest in the transition metal-free transformation of small molecules like CO2 into valuable products. In this area, there is a recent growing incentive to heterogenize molecular FLPs into porous solids, merging the benefits of homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysis - high activity, selectivity, and recyclability. Despite the progress, challenges remain in preventing deactivation, poisoning, and simplifying catalyst-product separation. This review explores the expanding field of FLPs in catalysis, covering existing molecular FLPs for CO2 hydrogenation and recent efforts to design heterogeneous porous systems from both experimental and theoretical perspectives. Section 2 discusses experimental examples of CO2 hydrogenation by molecular FLPs, starting with stoichiometric reactions and advancing to catalytic ones. It then examines attempts to immobilize FLPs in porous matrices, including siliceous solids, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), covalent organic frameworks, and disordered polymers, highlighting current limitations and challenges. Section 3 then reviews computational studies on the mechanistic details of CO2 hydrogenation, focusing on H2 splitting and hydride/proton transfer steps, summarizing efforts to establish structure-activity relationships. It also covers the computational aspects on grafting FLPs inside MOFs. Finally, Section 4 summarizes the main design principles established so far, while addressing the complexities of translating computational approaches into the experimental realm, particularly in heterogeneous systems. This section underscores the need to strengthen the dialogue between theoretical and experimental approaches in this field.

Abstract:Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) incorporating oligo(phenylenevinylene) units have shown promise in enhancing photocatalytic hydrogen evolution. This study presents a series of linear oligo(phenylenevinylene)-based COFs with various ratios of β-ketoenamine to imine linkages. The COFs-950-OMe are crystalline, exhibiting higher surface area compared to amorphous COFs-950, due to the introduction of methoxy side groups.
Palladium Single Atom‐supported Covalent Organic Frameworks for Aqueous‐phase Hydrogenative Hydrogenolysis of Aromatic Aldehydes via Hydrogen Heterolysis

Abstract:Developing a method for the tandem hydrogenative hydrogenolysis of bio-based furfuryl aldehydes to methylfurans is crucial for synthesizing sustainable biofuels and chemicals; however, it poses a challenge due to the easy hydrogenation of the C=C bond and difficult cleavage of the C–O bond. Herein, a palladium (Pd) single-atom-supported covalent organic framework was fabricated and showed a unique 2,5-dimethylfuran yield of up to 98.2% when reacted with 5-methyl furfuryl aldehyde in an unprecedented water solvent at 30°C. Furthermore, it exhibited excellent catalytic universality while converting various furfuryl-, benzyl-, and heterocyclic aldehydes at room temperature. The analysis of the catalytic mechanism confirmed that H2 was heterolytically activated on the Pd–N pair and triggered the keto-enol tautomerism of the covalent organic frameworks (COFs) host, resulting in H––Pd∙∙∙O–H+ sites. These sites served as novel asymmetric hydrogenation sites for the C=O group and hydrogenolysis sites for the C–OH group through a scarce SN2 mechanism. This study demonstrated remarkable bifunctional catalysis through the H2-induced keto-enol tautomerism of COF catalysts for the atypical preparation of methyl aromatics in a water solvent at room temperature.

Abstract:Abstract Designing heterogeneous solid surface frustrated Lewis pair (ssFLP) catalyst for hydrogenation is a new challenge in catalysis and no research has been reported on the construction of ssFLP on boehmite (AlOOH) surfaces up to now as far as we know. Herein, AlOOH with a layer structure is prepared and it is found that the Lewis basic O Hv site (one H removed from OH) and an adjacent Lewis acidic unsaturated Al site (Al 3+ unsatur .) proximal to a surface OH v (OH vacancy) on AlOOH layers could form the ssFLP. The layered structure of AlOOH and its abundant OH defects over the surface result in a high concentration of O Hv /Al 3+ unsatur . FLPs, which are conducive to highly efficient hydrogen activation for hydrogenation of olefins and alkynes with low H-H bond dissociates activation energy of 0.16 eV under mild conditions (T = 80°C and P(H 2 ) = 2.0 MPa). This work develops a new kind of hydrogenation catalyst and provides a new perspective for creating solid surface FLP.

Fabrication of Hydrazone-Linked Covalent Organic Frameworks Using Alkyl Amine as Building Block for High Adsorption Capacity of Metal Ions

Abstract:There are several researches on the preparation and application of hydrazone-linked covalent organic frameworks (COFs), and all of them generally necessitate rigid aromatic amines. Herein, we report a strategy for design and synthesis of COF with flexible alkyl amine as a building block and intramolecular hydrogen bonding as a knot in the network. The proof-of-concept design was demonstrated by exploring 1,3,5-triformylphloroglucinol and oxalyldihydrazide (ODH) as precursors to synthesize a novel COF material (TpODH), in which different organic building units are combined through hydrazone bonds to form two-dimensional porous frameworks. It should be pointed that irreversible enol-to-keto tautomerism and intramolecular N-H···O═C hydrogen bonding of TpODH would enhance the crystallinity and chemical stability, leading to large specific surface area of 835 m2 g-1. However, another COF synthesized with 1,3,5-triformylbenzene and ODH exhibited less crystallinity and low special surface area (94 m2 g-1). Representatively, the resulting TpODH afforded Cu(II) and Hg(II) capacities of 324 and 1692 mg g-1, respectively, which exceeded that of most COFs previously reported. Moreover, the Fourier-transform infrared and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy spectra analyses were taken to demonstrate the adsorption mechanism. These results suggested that the materials could be applied to the removal of metallic ions in the future.
