Abstract:The separation of C2H2/CO2 is an important process in industry but challenged by the trade-off of capacity and selectivity owning to their close physical properties and identical kinetic molecular size. Herein, we reported a new metal organic framework ZNU-3 (ZNU = Zhejiang Normal University) with flexibility controlled by abundant hydrogen-bonds for highly selective molecular sieving of C2H2 from CO2, CH4, C2H4 and C2H6 using commercially available cost-effective ligands. At 1.0 bar and 298 K, the uptake capacity of C2H2 is 81.0 cm(3) (STP) g(-1), while the CO2, C2H4, C2H6, CH4, N-2 uptake capacities are only 5.4, 5.3, 1.0, 1.1, 1.1 cm(3) (STP) respectively. Such high uptake ratios of C2H2 over other C2 and C1 gases have rarely been achieved. Particularly, the C2H2/CO2 uptake ratio of 14.9 is only secondary to that of the benchmark UTSA-300a and much higher than those of all other porous materials. Dynamic breakthrough experiments with equimolar C2H2/CO2 mixtures showed that the retaining time of C2H2 is nearly 2 fold of that of CO2, indicating the excellent practical separation performance of ZNU-3 for C2H2/CO2 mixtures. Modeling studies indicated that C2H2 is mainly trapped by two opposite carboxylic groups with additional small contribution from pi center dot center dot center dot pi packing between pyridine ring and planar C C moiety.

Abstract:In search of novel semiconductor photocatalysts is one of the important topics in photocatalytic solar fuel production. Here, we report a novel highly fluorinated covalent organic framework (denoted as TFA-COF) constructed via Schiff-base condensation of 2,3,5,6-tetrafluoroterephthaldehyde and 2,4,6-tris(4-aminophenyl)-1,3,5-triazine for photocatalytic H-2 production from water. Introducing fluorine atoms with electron-withdrawing ability into the framework of COF can not only significantly increase its specific surface area to 2490.3 m(2)/g, but also reduce its band gap, and bring about the efficient separation of photogenerated electrons and holes. As a result, the TFA-COF exhibits a continuous and stable photocatalytic H-2 production rate of 80 mol.g(-1).h(-1) under full wavelength irradiation, which is much higher than that of the similar one without fluorine (TA-COF, 10 mol.g(-1)-h(-1)). Our results illustrate that the introduction of fluorine atoms can effectively increase the photocatalytic performance of COFs.

Abstract:Effective C2H2/CO2 separation is regarded as a crucial procedure in the C2H2 industry yet extremely challenging because of their similar physical and chemical properties. Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) have become a promising platform for gas adsorption separation, but they still suffer from unsatisfactory C2H2 adsorption capacity and selectivity. Herein, we report a nanoporous fluorine-functioned COF (TpPa-F) for C2H2/CO2 separation, which was synthesized by a mechanochemical approach with a F-containing precursor (2-fluoro-1,4-benzenediamine). A superior C2H2 adsorption capacity of 117 cm3/g (4.78 mmol/g) and a C2H2/CO2 selectivity of 3.3 at 298 K and 1 bar were achieved, which surpass most of the reported COF adsorbents in the literature. Notably, TpPa-F exhibited an extraordinary thermal stability of up to around 673 K and showed chemical robustness in organic or acidic/basic solutions. Theoretical calculations reveal the hydrogen bond interaction of CC–H···F, which contributes to the high C2H2 uptake and separation selectivity. This work provides a promising strategy of fluorine functionalization for enhancing the ability to recognize and separate small gas molecules in a large channel.

Abstract:Emerging covalent organic frameworks (COFs) have received great attention for their unique features, but the limited building blocks restrict their structural diversity and performance exploration. Reticular chemistry provides guidance for the structural expansion and performance regulation of COFs. Herein, we constructed two novel two-dimensional (2D) COFs functionalized with cyclopentadienyl cobalt, denoted as UPC-COF-1 and UPC-COF-2, via [4+2] imine condensation with diamine building blocks of different length. Theoretical simulations combined with experimental results reveal that UPC-COF-1 with shorter building blocks, narrower pore sizes, and stronger host-guest interactions has better C2H2/CO2 separation performance. In addition, UPC-COF-1 can maintain separation stability in the presence of water vapor and methane impurities. This work provides a new evidence for the performance regulation of isoreticular COFs with modular and tunable building blocks.

Abstract:Constructing three dimensional (3D) covalent organic frameworks (COFs) through the entanglement of two dimensional (2D) nets is a promising but underdeveloped strategy. Herein, we report the design and synthesis of a fluorine functionalized 3D COF (3D-An-COF-F) formed by entangled 2D sql nets. The structure of 3D-An-COF-F was determined by the combination of continuous rotation electron diffraction technique and modelling based on the chemical information from real space. Interestingly, compared to the isostructural 3D-An-COF without F atoms, 3D-An-COF-F showed an improved CO2 sorption ability and higher CO2/N2 selectivity. Our study not only demonstrated the generality of constructing 3D COFs with entangled 2D nets by introducing bulky groups vertically in planar building blocks, but also will expand the diversity of 3D COFs for various applications.

Abstract:Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are a type of crystalline porous polymers and possess ordered structures and eternal pores. Because of the unique structural characters and diverse functional groups, COFs have been used in various application fields, such as adsorption, catalysis, separation, ion conduction, and energy storage. Among COFs, the fluorine‐containing COFs (fCOFs) have been developed for special applications by virtue of special physical and chemical properties resulted by fluorine element, which is a nonmetallic halogen element and possesses strong electronegativity. In organic chemistry field, introducing fluorine into chemicals enables chemicals to exhibit many interesting properties, and fluorine chemistry increasingly plays an important role in the history of chemical development. The introduction of fluorine in COFs can enhance the crystallinity, porosity, and stability of COFs, making COFs show superior performances and some new applications. In this review, the synthesis and application of fCOFs are systematically summarized. The application involves photocatalytic production of hydrogen peroxide, photocatalytic water splitting, electrocatalytic CO2 reduction, adsorption for different substances (H2, pesticides, per‐/polyfluoroalkyl substances, polybrominated diphenyl ethers, bisphenols, and positively charged organic dye molecules), oil−water separation, energy storage (e.g., zinc‐ion batteries, lithium−sulfur batteries), and proton conduction. Abstract:Ordered open channels found in two-dimensional covalent organic frameworks (2D COFs) could enable them to adsorb carbon dioxide. However, the frameworks' dense layer architecture results in low porosity that has thus far restricted their potential for carbon dioxide adsorption. Here we report a strategy for converting a conventional 2D COF into an outstanding platform for carbon dioxide capture through channel-wall functionalization. The dense layer structure enables the dense integration of functional groups on the channel walls, creating a new version of COFs with high capacity, reusability, selectivity, and separation productivity for flue gas. These results suggest that channel-wall functional engineering could be a facile and powerful strategy to develop 2D COFs for high-performance gas storage and separation.

Abstract:The synthesis of crystalline polyphenylene covalent organic frameworks (COFs) was accomplished by linking fluorinated tris(4-acetylphenyl)benzene building units using aldol cyclotrimerization. The structures of two COFs, reported here, were confirmed by powder X-ray diffraction techniques, Fourier-transform infrared, and solid-state 13C CP/MAS NMR spectroscopy. The results showed that the COFs were porous and chemically stable in corrosive, harsh environments for at least 1 week. Accordingly, post-synthetically modified derivatives of these COFs using primary amines showed CO2 uptake from air and flue gas.

Abstract:Functionalized 3D COF‐300s (COF‐300‐X, X = –SO3H, –NO2, –OH, and –NH2) possess excellent CO2 adsorption and separation performances over N2. In‐depth analyses on pore physical characteristics, gas–framework interaction, and gas distribution elucidate the promotion essence from the introduction of functionalized groups. Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are emerging adsorbent materials for CO2 capture and separation due to their tunable pore size, periodic permutation, and chemical thermal stability. Herein, four functionalized 3D COF‐300s (COF‐300‐X, X = –SO3H, –NO2, –OH, and –NH2) for CO2 adsorption and separation are studied by using density functional theory and grand canonical Monte Carlo simulation. The results show that four functionalized COF‐300s could create a feasible environment for CO2 adsorption with high accessible surface area, suitable pore size, and high porosity. The CO2 adsorption capacity in COF‐300s could be significantly improved by functionalization. In comparison, the best performing COF‐300‐SO3H shows a superior CO2 adsorption capacity of 6.23 mmol g−1 and a high CO2/N2 selectivity of 393 at 298 K and 100 kPa. The adsorption heat and interaction analyses demonstrate that the CO2 affinity in COF‐300s is enhanced by the introduction of polar functional groups, which renders great CO2 adsorption and separation performances. The gas distribution shows that the adsorption sites are concentrated near the functional groups and the distribution of CO2 in COF‐300‐SO3H has a characteristic of multilayer adsorptions. This work highlights COF‐300‐SO3H as an outperforming adsorbent candidate for CO2 capture and separation.

Abstract:The efficient separation of C2H2/CO2 possesses great commercial and research value and remains challenging due to their similar molecular sizes and physical properties. Functionalization is a powerful strategy for precisely regulating the pore environment of porous adsorbents, notably metal–organic frameworks (MOFs), for recognizing target molecules. Here, we construct three interpenetrated MOFs using a stepwise fluorinated pillar-ligand strategy. Interestingly, the degree of interpenetration can be managed by introducing different pillars. The unique interpenetrating structure cooperates with fluorine-rich pore environment significantly improves the C2H2 uptake and the C2H2/CO2 separation selectivity. The optimized difluorine-functionalized UPC-193 exhibits the highest C2H2 adsorption capacity (80.45 cm3/g) and separation efficiency (C2H2/CO2 uptake ratio of 1.9) among UPC-190 systems at ambient conditions. Ideal adsorbed solution theory (IAST) calculations, molecular modeling studies, and breakthrough experiments comprehensively demonstrate that UPC-193 is an effective MOF adsorbent for equimolar C2H2/CO2 separation. The stepwise pillar-ligand fluorination strategy proves to be an effective approach to extend the functionality of MOFs for challenging gas separations.

Abstract:Environmental issues have always been a concern, and designing a material that can effectively combat both gaseous and liquid pollutants is a goal we are working toward. Herein, two examples of N-rich covalent organic frameworks (COFs), named YCOF1 and YCOF2, were synthesized using the solvothermal method. Their structure, stability and morphology were characterized using PXRD, FT-IR, XPS, TGA and SEM. According to the Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) method, the specific surface areas of YCOF1 and YCOF2 were 559.096 and 741.261 m2 g-1, respectively. Under the volume percentage of simulated flue gases, YCOF1 exhibits excellent CO2 IAST selectivities of 70.97 at 273 K and 30.05 at 298 K, while YCOF2 also exhibits excellent CO2 IAST selectivity of 51.90 at 273 K. Moreover, their high specific surface area and abundant active sites provide excellent adsorption capacity for malachite green (MG), with maximum adsorption amounts of 650.14 mg g-1 (YCOF1) and 572.95 mg g-1 (YCOF2). Furthermore, the adsorption of the COFs for dyes followed the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and the Langmuir isothermal adsorption model. The dye removal efficiency of YCOF1 and YCOF2 showed less than 5% change after 5 adsorption cycles.

Abstract:Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) hold great potentials for addressing the challenge of highly efficient oil-water separation, but they are restricted by the poor wettability and processability as crystalline membranes. Here we report the design and synthesis of two-dimensional (2D) robust COFs with controllable hydrophobicity and processability, allowing the COF layers to be directly grown on the support surfaces. Three 2D COFs with AA or ABC stacking are prepared by condensation of triamines with fluorine and/or isopropyl groups and perfluorodialdehyde. They all show excellent tolerance to water, acid, and base, with water contact angles (CA) of 111.5-145.8°. The two COFs with isopropyl and fluorine mixtures can grow as a coating on a stainless-steel net (SSN) substrate, whereas the one with only fluorine substituents cannot. The superhydrophobic COF@SSN coating with water CA of up to 150.1° displays high water-resistance and self-cleaning properties, enabling high oil-water separation performances with an efficiency of over 99.5 % and a permeation flux of 2.84×105 L m-2 h-1 , which are among the highest values reported for state-of-the-art membranes.

Abstract:A azine-linked covalent organic framework, COF-JLU2, was designed and synthesized by condensation of hydrazine hydrate and 1,3,5-triformylphloroglucinol under solvothermal conditions for the first time. The new covalent organic framework material combines permanent micropores, high crystallinity, good thermal and chemical stability, and abundant heteroatom activated sites in the skeleton. COF-JLU2 possesses a moderate BET surface area of over 410m(2)g(-1) with a pore volume of 0.56cm(3)g(-1). Specifically, COF-JLU2 displays remarkable carbon dioxide uptake (up to 217mgg(-1)) and methane uptake (38mgg(-1)) at 273K and 1bar, as well as high CO2/N-2 (77) selectivity. Furthermore, we further highlight that it exhibits a higher hydrogen storage capacity (16mgg(-1)) than those of reported COFs at 77K and 1bar.

Abstract:A 3D microporous metal-organic framework with open Cu2+ sites and suitable pore space, [Cu2(L)(H2O)2]·(H2O)4(DMF)8 (ZJU-15, H4L = 5,5′-(9H-carbazole-2,7-diyl)diisophthalic acid; DMF = N,N-dimethylformamide; ZJU = Zhejiang University), has been constructed and characterized. Abstract:CO2 emission has emerged as a critical environment issue inducing greenhouse effects. How to capture CO2 and convert it into valuable chemicals is still a great challenge. Herein, we report a single atomic Cu-anchored covalent organic framework with Kagome lattice configuration (denoted as hex-Cu kgm-COF) and further investigate its properties in CO2 capture and conversion. Results indicate that hex-Cu kgm-COF shows not only a large CO2 adsorption capacity and high selectivity for CO2 over N2, but excellent hydrogenation activity of CO2 to form CH3OH and CH4, which are ascribed to the special configuration of kgm-COF with sufficient space and single atomic Cu active sites. In short, this work theoretically reports a novel adsorption and in situ conversion “2 in 1” nanoreactor to achieve the CO2 capture and resource utilization.

Abstract:Removal of the CO2 impurities from C2H2/CO2 mixtures is an essential process to produce high-purity C2H2. Fabricating an adsorbent capable of discriminating these species, which have close kinetic diameters, is critical for developing advanced adsorption processes. Herein, we demonstrate a strategy to exploit the tunability of interlayer and intralayer spaces of two-dimensional (2D) layered metal-organic frameworks to achieve high performance for C2H2/CO2 separation. This indicates that interlayer symmetrical control can achieve more efficient packing of C2H2 into Ni(4-DPDS)(2)CrO4, with a high C2H2 capacity of 45.7 cm(3).g(-1) at 0.01 bar and a selectivity of 67.7 (298 K, 1 bar), which strikes a good balance between working capacity and separation selectivity compared to other isostructural Ni(4-DPDS)(2)MO4 (M = Mo, W). Crystallographic studies and DFT-D calculations reveal that such a C2H2-selective adsorbent possesses strong binding interactions due to the tailored pore confinement provided by the angular anions and rich electronic environment. Experimental breakthrough results comprehensively demonstrate the efficient C2H2/CO2 separation performance of this unique material.
Metal–Organic Frameworks Featuring 18-Connected Nonanuclear Rare-Earth Oxygen Clusters and Cavities for Efficient C 2 H 2 /CO 2 Separation

Abstract:Two rare-earth (RE) metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) formulated as {(Me2NH2)2[RE9(μ3-OH)8(μ2-OH)3(DCPB)6(H2O)3]}n (RE = Y3+ and Tb3+; termed JXNU-10) built from a triangular 3,5-di(4′-carboxylphenyl)benzoic acid (DCPB3–) ligand are presented. JXNU-10 features the rarely observed 18-connected nonanuclear [RE9(μ3-OH)8(μ2-OH)3] clusters, one-dimensional-nanosized tubular channels, and trigonal-bipyramidal cavities. The presence of the high-nuclear RE-oxo clusters and the robust coordination bonds between the highly charged RE ions and the hard base of the carboxylate/hydroxyl oxygen atoms yielded the water-resistant JXNU-10 materials. JXNU-10 exhibits highly selective sorption of C2H2 over CO2 and highly efficient separation of a C2H2 and CO2 mixture. The carboxylate oxygen atoms and the rich π systems of the organic ligands on the pore walls are the desirable binding sites for a C2H2 molecule with acidic hydrogen atoms and an alkyne group, facilitating the excellent efficiency of JXNU-10 for C2H2/CO2 separation demonstrated by breakthrough experiments.The Supporting Information is available free of charge at https://pubs.acs.org/doi/10.1021/acs.inorgchem.1c01827.Crystal structures, PXRD patterns, TGA curves, gas sorption plots, and bond length table (PDF)This article has not yet been cited by other publications.
