Abstract:A 2D metastable carbon allotrope, penta-graphene, composed entirely of carbon pentagons and resembling the Cairo pentagonal tiling, is proposed.State-of-the-art theoretical calculations confirm that the new carbon polymorph is not only dynamically and mechanically stable, but also can withstand temperatures as high as 1000 K. Due to its unique atomic configuration, penta-graphene has an unusual negative Poisson's ratio and ultrahigh ideal strength that can even outperform graphene.Furthermore, unlike graphene that needs to be functionalized for opening a band gap, penta-graphene possesses an intrinsic quasi-direct band gap as large as 3.25 eV, close to that of ZnO and GaN.Equally important, penta-graphene can be exfoliated from T12-carbon.When rolled up, it can form pentagon-based nanotubes which are semiconducting, regardless of their chirality.When stacked in different patterns, stable 3D twin structures of T12-carbon are generated with band gaps even larger than that of T12-carbon.The versatility of penta-graphene and its derivatives are expected to have broad applications in nanoelectronics and nanomechanics.

Abstract:Carbon has an amazing number of different atomic configurations. Apart from the crystalline forms of diamond and graphite, we are now familiar with the cage structures of the fullerenes [1], the elongated carbon nanotubes [2], and the two-dimensional sheets of graphene [3], and each of these forms has led to a wealth of scientific discoveries and a range of applications. In a paper in Physical Review Letters, Chuanhong Jin, Kazu Suenaga and Sumio Iijima at NIAIST in Tsukuba, Japan, and Haiping Lan and Lianmao Peng at Peking University in China show that with a high-energy electron beam, they can transform graphite into graphene, and further into separate strings of carbon atoms [4]. There have been only scarce reports on carbon atom chains, and their new approach adds an avenue to produce new all-carbon electronic nanostructures.
Penta-graphene: the Extension of Carbon Sheets and Material Realization of Mathematical Models

Abstract:In traditional Chinese culture,the most representative number with mystery is five as witnessed in the "theory of five elements" in ancient time.Pentagon is well-known to mathematicians for the golden ratio (0.618) and the fifth Platonic solid,the dodecahedron composed of 12 pentagonal faces.On August 17th 2015,a group of mathematicians at the University of Washington Bothell discovered the 15th type of pentagon that can file in a plane with no overlaps or gaps.These findings are inspiring.However,how to realize these mathematical models in materials is intriguing and challenging.Recently,penta-graphene,a two-dimensional (2D) carbon allotrope composed entirely of pentagons was proposed,which can be regarded as the material realization of the mathematical models proposed for 2D packing of pentagons.State-of-the-art theoretical calculations and extensive analyses reveal that penta-graphene is not only dynamically and mechanically stable,but also can withstand temperatures as high as 1000 K.Due to its unique atomic configuration,this sheet exhibits an unusual negative Poisson's ratio and an ultrahigh mechanical strength that can even outperform graphene.Penta-graphene is semiconducting with a quasi-direct band gap of 3.25 eV,close to that of ZnO and GaN.More interestingly,penta-graphene can be rolled up to form a one-dimensional (1D)pentagon-based nanotube that is also semiconducting regardless of its chirality.In addition,penta-graphene can also be stacked to form three dimensional (3D) stable structures displaying different properties from those of the mother-phase T12-carbon.The versatility of pentagraphene and its derivatives are expected to have broad applications in nanoelectronics and nanomechanics.Inspired by the prediction of penta-graphene,pure pentagon-based 2D structures of SiC2,CB2,BN2,CN2 and penta-silieene have been recently reported.These progresses make the holy pentagon more glorified.Pentagon-based nanostructures and materials have attracted increasing attention in mathematics,chemistry and material science.Especially the 15 pentagonal titling patterns proposed in mathematics and the newly designed pentagon-based 2D materials will stimulate new progress in synthesis of new materials with novel properties.With the rapid advances in controllable nano-synthesis,it can be expected that the claim of successfully synthesizing penta-graphene will be made in the near future.
Mechanically Ductile 3D Sp – Sp 2 Microporous Carbon

Abstract:A new sp–sp 2-hybridized tetragonal carbon allotrope, namely Tetra-carbon, is predicted through the evolutionary particle swarm structural search. Tetra-carbon has a 3D framework composed of sp 2 carbon helixes connected by linear sp carbon chains, similar to the interconnected network of propadienyl groups, which forms the well-proportioned microporous structure. Tetra-carbon is thermodynamically more stable than known graphdiyne and carbyne carbon and also shows mechanical and dynamic stabilities at ambient pressure. Tetra-carbon is a semiconductor with an indirect band gap of 3.27 eV and has anisotropic tensile strengths with an unexpected large tensile strain of 0.64 along the [001] direction. Base on the analysis of Poisson’s ratios as well as the tensile strains, it is significantly revealed that Tetra-carbon is a mechanically ductile microporous carbon allotrope in contrast with the known brittle carbons such as diamond, potentially applied in the fields where the ductile metals are available.
Penta-Pt2N4: an Ideal Two-Dimensional Material for Nanoelectronics.

Abstract:Since the discovery of graphene, two-dimensional (2D) materials have paved a new routine for designing high-performance nanoelectronic devices. To facilitate the device applications, there are three key requirements for a material: sizeable band gap, high carrier mobility and robust environmental stability. However, for the hottest 2D materials studied in recent years, graphene is gapless, transition metal dichalcogenides have low carrier mobility, and black phosphorene is environmentally sensitive. So far, these three characteristics can seldom be satisfied in one single material. Therefore, it becomes a great challenge for finding an ideal 2D material to overcome such a limitation. In this work, we theoretically predict a novel planar 2D material: Penta-Pt2N4, which are designed by the fantastic Cario pentagonal tiling as well as the rare nitrogen double bond. Most significantly, the 2D Penta-Pt2N4 exhibits excellent intrinsic properties, including large direct band gap up to 1.51 eV, high carrier mobility up to 105 cm2V-1s-1, giant Young's module up to 0.70 TPa, and robust dynamic, thermal and chemical stability. Moreover, Penta-Pt2N4 is a global minimal with PtN2 stoichiometry in 2D, so we also propose a CVD/MBE scheme to enable its experimental synthesis. We envision that the 2D Penta-Pt2N4 may find a wide application for future nanoelectronics.
Mechanical Properties of Penta-Graphene Nanotubes

Abstract:Penta-graphene is the name given to a novel puckered monolayer of carbon atoms tightly packed into an inerratic pentagonal network, theoretically, which exhibits excellent thermal and mechanical stability and can be rolled into penta-graphene nanotubes (PGNTs). Herein, we perform the first simulation study of mechanical properties of PGNTs under uniaxial tension. In addition to comparable mechanical properties with that of carbon nanotubes (CNT), it is found that PGNTs possess promising extensibility with typical plastic behavior due to the irreversible pentagon-to-polygon structural transformation and the hexagon carbon ring becomes the dominating structural motif after the transformation. The plastic characteristic of PGNTs is inherent with strain-rate and tube-diameter independences. Moreover, within ultimate temperature (T<1100 K), tensile deformed PGNTs manifest similar phase transition with an approximate transition ratio from pentagon to hexagon. The intrinsic insight provides a fundamental understanding of mechanic properties of PGNTs, which should open up a novel perspective for the design of plastic carbon-based nanomaterials.

Abstract:The quest for planar sp 2 -hybridized carbon allotropes other than graphene has stimulated substantial research efforts because of their predicted unique mechanical, electronic, and transport properties. However, the syntheses of these nonbenzenoid networks remain challenging due to the lack of reliable protocols for generating nonhexagonal rings. We have developed various on-surface synthesis strategies by which straight polymer chains are linked to form the nonbenzenoid carbon networks. In this way, we synthesized biphenylene network, a new carbon allotrope with 4-6-8-membered rings, which is metallic already at very small dimensions. Similarly, we generated phagraphene nanoribbons, which are based on 5-6-7-membered rings. Acenes are another interesting class of carbon materials that have fascinated chemists and physicists due to their potential for use in organic electronic applications. We show the synthesis of tridecacene (13ac) and pentadecacene (15ac), the longest acenes known to date, via multistep single-molecule manipulation of suitable precursor molecules on Au(111). We find antiferromagnetic open-shell ground state electron configurations for both acenes. 15ac shows a low-bias spin-excitation feature, indicating a singlet-triplet gap of around 124 meV. Investigation of 15ac complexes with up to 6 gold atoms suggest considerable multiradical contributions to the electronic ground state of 15ac. Altering the electronic and magnetic properties of carbon-based nanomaterials can also be achieved by doping with heteroatoms. We present an access to a variety of nitrogen-containing 0D and 1D carbon nanostructures including planar and curved cycloarenes with different cavities as well as N-doped graphene nanoribbons.

Abstract:The most direct and efficient strategy in designing and synthesizing new materials is to change the structural building units, which could lead to a new paradigm shift. Penta-graphene (PG) is such an example where the structural unit is pentagon rather than hexagon as in graphene. Since we proposed the unique structure of penta-graphene, a two-dimensional (2D) carbon allotrope entirely composed of carbon pentacyclic rings [Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. U. S. A. 112, 2372 (2015)], tremendous efforts have been made to explore the novel properties of PG and its derivatives such as penta-nanotubes, penta-nanoribbons, multilayer PG, functionalized PG, and polycrystalline PG. These materials exhibit novel physical and chemical properties, including nano-auxeticity, intrinsic piezoelectricity, ferroelectricity, spontaneous polarization, and catalysis, showing great potential for the applications in battery anode, spin-splitting/filtering, gas separation, biodetection, and heterojunctions. More importantly, PG has inspired a lot of efforts in the design and synthesis of other pentagon-based 2D materials with exceptional properties and promising applications (http://www. pubsd.com/). In this paper, we provide a comprehensive review on the progress made in this new field by focusing on the structure-property relationship. We discuss the main achievements that have provided an in-depth understanding of the novel properties and applications of pentagon-based materials, ranging from PG to PG derived materials, and PG's cousins (penta-silicene and penta-germanene). This review can not only help to better understand the property evolution of the elemental penta-sheets in the same group, but also provides a bird's eye view on how the structural unit changes the functionalities of materials. Penta-CN2 revisited: Superior stability, synthesis condition exploration, negative Poisson's ratio and quasi-flat bands

Abstract:Pentagon-based two-dimensional (2D) materials have received tremendous attention owing to their unique atomic configurations, extraordinary physical and chemical properties, and their potential for broad applications. As one member of 2D penta-based materials, penta-CN2 has been proposed to be a high energy density material. Here, based on an in-depth thermodynamic and ab initio molecular dynamics analysis, we reveal that penta-CN2 has superior stability with an ultrahigh melting point up to 2500 K. Moreover, it remains an amorphous C-N network under the melting state, which makes penta-CN2 suitable for coating material in aviation area. Encouraged by the prospect of excellent applications, we further propose an experimental condition for synthesizing the penta-CN2. Specifically, the Nb(100) surface would be a potential substrate, the CH4 and N2H4 could be used as carbon and nitrogen sources under T = 1600 K with pressure p(H-2) = p(N2H4) = 4 x 10(-4) bar, p(CH4) = (10 & SIM; 100)p(H-2). Further calculation of electro-mechanical properties shows that penta-CN2 has intriguing properties, which includes large-range negative Poisson's ratio and paramagnetic insulator to ferromagnetic half-metal transition induced by hole doping. Our work is expected to give a profound view of penta-CN2 and guide the future experiment works.
Tuning the Electronic and Mechanical Properties of Penta-Graphene Via Hydrogenation and Fluorination

Abstract:Penta-graphene has recently been proposed as a new allotrope of carbon composed of pure pentagons, and displays many novel properties going beyond graphene [Zhang et al., Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. U. S. A., 2015, 112, 2372]. To further explore the property modulations, we have carried out a theoretical investigation of the hydrogenated and fluorinated penta-graphene sheets. Our first-principles calculations reveal that hydrogenation and fluorination can effectively tune the electronic and mechanical properties of penta-graphene: turning the sheet from semiconducting to insulating; changing the Poisson's ratio from negative to positive, and reducing the Young's modulus. Moreover, the band gaps of the hydrogenated and fluorinated penta-graphene sheets are larger than those of fully hydrogenated and fluorinated graphene by 0.37 and 0.04 eV, respectively. The phonon dispersions and ab initio molecular dynamics simulations confirm that the surface modified penta-graphene sheets are dynamically and thermally stable, and show that the hydrogenated penta-graphene has more Raman-active modes with higher frequencies as compared to the fluorinated penta-graphene.
Three Dimensional Graphdiyne Polymers with Tunable Band Gaps

Abstract:Four three-dimensional graphdiyne polymers, namely Tri-C18, Hex-C36, Tri-C54, and Orth-C72, are predicted with first principles calculations. These carbon allotropes are constituted with interlinked sp3-hybridized carbon pillars and sp2-hybridized graphene-like nanoribbons. Graphdiyne polymers are energetically more stable than C60 and graphdiyne, and show lower phase transition energy barriers from AA-graphdiyne than that of graphite–diamond transition. Except for the semimetallic Tri-C18, these polymers show narrow direct (or quasi-direct) band gap of 1.55–1.74eV. The porous structure and the high in-plane Young’s modulus of graphdiyne sheet are inherited by these polymers. Meanwhile, a greatly enhanced Young’s modulus as high as ca. 1TPa along the direction perpendicular to graphdiyne sheet and high hardness are developed in these systems.
A Geometrically Flexible Three-Dimensional Nanocarbon.

Abstract:The development of architecturally unique molecular nanocarbons by bottom-up organic synthesis is essential for accessing functional organic materials awaiting technological developments in fields such as energy, electronics, and biomedicine. Herein, we describe the design and synthesis of a triptycene-based three-dimensional (3D) nanocarbon, GFN-1, with geometrical flexibility on account of its three peripheral pi-panels being capable of interconverting between two curved conformations. An effective through-space electronic communication among the three pi-panels of GFN-1 has been observed in its monocationic radical form, which exhibits an extensively delocalized spin density over the entire 3D pi-system as revealed by electron paramagnetic resonance and UV-vis-NIR spectroscopies. The flexible 3D molecular architecture of GFN-1, along with its densely packed superstructures in the presence of fullerenes, is revealed by microcrystal electron diffraction and single-crystal X-ray diffraction, which establish the coexistence of both propeller and tweezer conformations in the solid state. GFN-1 exhibits strong binding affinities for fullerenes, leading to host-guest complexes that display rapid photoinduced electron transfer within a picosecond. The outcomes of this research could pave the way for the utilization of shape and electronically complementary nanocarbons in the construction of functional coassemblies.
Beyond Graphitic Carbon Nitride: Nitrogen-Rich Penta-Cn2 Sheet

Abstract:Using first-principles calculations combined with ab initio molecular dynamics and tight binding model, we predict the existence of a kinetically stable two-dimensional (2D) penta-CN2 sheet, which is isostructural to the recently discovered pentagraphene. The concentration of N in this new carbon nitride sheet exceeds the maximum N content, namely 21.66%, that has been achieved experimentally in honeycomb geometry. It even exceeds the N content found recently in hole-doped carbon nitride C0.5N0.5, as well as in porous graphitic C3N4. The penta-CN2 sheet contains N-N single bonds with an energy density of 4.41 kJ/g, higher than that predicted recently in nitrogen rich B-N compound. Remarkably, penta-CN2 has an in-plane axial Young's modulus of 319 N/m, even stiffer than the h-BN monolayer. The electronic band structure of penta-CN2 exhibits an interesting double degeneracy at the first Brillouin zone edges which is protected by the nonsymmorphic symmetry and can be found in other isostructural chemical analogues. The band gap of penta-CN, calculated using HSEO6 functional is 6.53 eV, suggesting its insulating nature. The prediction of a stable penta-CN2 implies that puckering might be more effective than porosity in holding nitrogen in 2D carbon nitrides. This sheds new light on how to design nitrogen-rich C-N compounds beyond N-doped graphene.

Abstract:Using systematic evolutionary structure searching we propose a new carbon allotrope, phagraphene, standing for penta-hexa-hepta-graphene, because the structure is composed of 5-6-7 carbon rings. This two-dimensional (2D) carbon structure is lower in energy than most of the predicted 2D carbon allotropes due to its sp2-hybridization and density of atomic packing comparable to graphene. More interestingly, the electronic structure of phagraphene has distorted Dirac cones. The direction-dependent cones are further proved to be robust against external strain with tunable Fermi velocities.

Octagraphene as a Versatile Carbon Atomic Sheet for Novel Nanotubes, Unconventional Fullerenes and Hydrogen Storage

Abstract:We study a versatile structurally favorable periodic $sp^2$-bonded carbon atomic planar sheet with $C_{4v}$ symmetry by means of the first-principles calculations. This carbon allotrope is composed of carbon octagons and squares with two bond lengths and is thus dubbed as octagraphene. It is a semimetal with the Fermi surface consisting of one hole and one electron pocket, whose low-energy physics can be well described by a tight-binding model of $\pi$-electrons. Its Young's modulus, breaking strength and Poisson's ratio are obtained to be 306 $N/m$, 34.4 $N/m$ and 0.13, respectively, which are close to those of graphene. The novel sawtooth and armchair carbon nanotubes as well as unconventional fullerenes can also be constructed from octagraphene. It is found that the Ti-absorbed octagraphene can be allowed for hydrogen storage with capacity around 7.76 wt%.

Abstract:The vibrational properties, electronic structures and optical properties of novel carbon allotropes, such as monolayer penta-graphene (PG), double-layer PG and T12-carbon, were studied by first-principles calculations. Results of phonon calculations demonstrate that these exotic carbon allotropes are dynamically stable. The bulk T12 phase is an indirect-gap semiconductor having a quasiparticle (QP) bandgap of ∼5.19 eV. When the bulk material transforms to a two-dimensional (2D) phase, the monolayer and double-layer PG become quasi-direct gap semiconductors with smaller QP bandgaps of ∼4.48 eV and ∼3.67 eV, respectively. Furthermore, the partial charge density analysis indicates that the 2D phases retain part of the electronic characteristics of the T12 phase. The linear photon energy-dependent dielectric functions and related optical properties including refractive index, extinction coefficient, absorption spectrum, reflectivity, and energy-loss spectrum were also computed and discussed. Additionally, the chemical stability of monolayer PG and the electronic and optical properties of double-side hydrogenated monolayer PG were also investigated. The results obtained from our calculations are beneficial to practical applications of these exotic carbon allotropes in optoelectronics and electronics.

Abstract:Graphene is a fascinating new nanocarbon possessing, single-, bi- or few- (≤ ten) layers of carbon atoms forming six-membered rings. Different types of graphene have been investigated by X-ray diffraction, atomic force microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, scanning tunneling microscopy and Raman spectroscopy. The extraordinary electronic properties of single-and bi-layer graphenes are indeed most unique and unexpected. Other properties of graphene such as gas adsorption characteristics, magnetic and electrochemical properties and the effects of doping by electrons and holes are equally noteworthy. Interestingly, molecular charge-transfer also markedly affects the electronic structure and properties of graphene. Many aspects of graphene are yet to be explored, including synthetic strategies which can yield sufficient quantities of graphene with the desired number of layers.
