Abstract:In traditional Chinese culture,the most representative number with mystery is five as witnessed in the "theory of five elements" in ancient time.Pentagon is well-known to mathematicians for the golden ratio (0.618) and the fifth Platonic solid,the dodecahedron composed of 12 pentagonal faces.On August 17th 2015,a group of mathematicians at the University of Washington Bothell discovered the 15th type of pentagon that can file in a plane with no overlaps or gaps.These findings are inspiring.However,how to realize these mathematical models in materials is intriguing and challenging.Recently,penta-graphene,a two-dimensional (2D) carbon allotrope composed entirely of pentagons was proposed,which can be regarded as the material realization of the mathematical models proposed for 2D packing of pentagons.State-of-the-art theoretical calculations and extensive analyses reveal that penta-graphene is not only dynamically and mechanically stable,but also can withstand temperatures as high as 1000 K.Due to its unique atomic configuration,this sheet exhibits an unusual negative Poisson's ratio and an ultrahigh mechanical strength that can even outperform graphene.Penta-graphene is semiconducting with a quasi-direct band gap of 3.25 eV,close to that of ZnO and GaN.More interestingly,penta-graphene can be rolled up to form a one-dimensional (1D)pentagon-based nanotube that is also semiconducting regardless of its chirality.In addition,penta-graphene can also be stacked to form three dimensional (3D) stable structures displaying different properties from those of the mother-phase T12-carbon.The versatility of pentagraphene and its derivatives are expected to have broad applications in nanoelectronics and nanomechanics.Inspired by the prediction of penta-graphene,pure pentagon-based 2D structures of SiC2,CB2,BN2,CN2 and penta-silieene have been recently reported.These progresses make the holy pentagon more glorified.Pentagon-based nanostructures and materials have attracted increasing attention in mathematics,chemistry and material science.Especially the 15 pentagonal titling patterns proposed in mathematics and the newly designed pentagon-based 2D materials will stimulate new progress in synthesis of new materials with novel properties.With the rapid advances in controllable nano-synthesis,it can be expected that the claim of successfully synthesizing penta-graphene will be made in the near future.
