Abstract:Cerium oxide thin films were fabricated onto 316 L stainless steel via a potentiostatically anodic electrodeposition approach in the solutions containing cerium(III) nitrate (0.05 M), ammonia acetate (0.1 M) and ethanol (10% V/V). The electrochemical behaviors and deposition parameters (applied potential, bath temperature, dissolving 02 and bath pH) have been investigated. Results show that, the electrochemical oxidation of Ce3+ goes through one electrochemical step, which is under charge transfer control. The optimum applied potential for film deposition is 0.8 V. Bath temperature plays a significant effect on the deposition rate, composition (different colors of the film) and surface morphology of the deposits. Due to the hydrolysis of Ce3+, cerous hydroxide is facility to form when the bath temperature is higher than 60 C. The electroplating bath pH is another key role for the anodic deposition of cerium oxide thin films, and the best bath pH is around 6.20. N-2 or O-2 purged into the bath will result in film porosities and O-2 favors cerium oxide particles and film generation. (c) 2014 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:In this study, cerium oxide (CeO2) was deposited on TiO2 nanorods (TiO2-NRs) through the one-step deposition by using dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) plasma treatment, where this was a simple and efficient means of synthesizing a CeO2/TiO2-NR electrode. The results of X-ray diffraction indicated that CeO2 (1 1 1) was successfully loaded on the TiO2-NRs, and the peak shifted in the positive direction after DBD discharge-induced modification, indicating that a bond between CeO2 and TiO2 had been formed in the CeO2/TiO2-NR electrode. Based on X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, the ratio of Ce3+/Ce4+ increased due to plasma modification to enhance the oxygen vacancy of the CeO2/TiO2-NRs in the lattice structure. The CeO2/TiO2-NR composite electrode delivered the best photoelectrochemical (PEC) performance at a modified input voltage of 45 V and a deposition time of 10 min due to DBD discharge. The efficiency of removal of phenol from simulated seawater with a high salt system yielded the highest value of 97.1% for the CeO2/TiO2-NR electrodes through the PEC process at 3 V and UV-visible irradiation. A mechanism of the PEC performance of the CeO2/TiO2-NRs electrode was proposed, whereby a heterojunction was formed between TiO2 and CeO2 to increase the effect of oxygen storage, and active chlorine ions were produced in the high chloride salt system to enhance the degradation of pollutants.

Abstract:Comparing with conventional physical vapor deposition methods, electrochemistry deposition technique shows a crack suppression effect by which the thickness of CeO2 films on Ni–5at.%W substrate can reach a high value up to 200nm without any cracks, make it a potential single buffer layer for coated conductor. In the present work, the processes of CeO2 film deposited by electrochemistry method are detailed investigated. A hydroxide reactive mechanism and an oxide reactive mechanism are distinguished for dimethyl sulfoxide and aqueous solution, respectively. Before heat treatment to achieve the required bi-axial texture performance of buffer layers, the precursor CeO2 films are identified in nanometer scales. The crack suppression for electrochemistry deposited CeO2 films is believed to be attributed to the nano-effects of the precursors.

Abstract:Ceria thin films have been anodically deposited onto 316L stainless steel in bath solutions containing different volume ratios of ethanol (0, 10, 40, 70 and 100% v/v). The influence of ethanol content on the electroplating behavior, and the structural and corrosion properties of the cerium oxide films were studied with electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, ellipsometry, X-ray diffraction, and Raman and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Results show that ethanol content plays a significant role on the properties of the deposited ceria films but negligible effect on their electroplating behavior. The as-deposited films are mostly in the Ce(IV) oxidation state and the stoichiometry is around CeO1.90 for all samples. With the increase of ethanol content from 0 to 100% v/v, the average grain diameter and film thickness of the obtained ceria film decrease from 16.8nm to 11.1nm and from 32.9nm to 15.8nm, respectively. Using a deposition bath solution containing 10% v/v ethanol, a layer of compacted yellowish gold ceria film with the minimum porosity of 19.9%, mean crystalline diameter of 15.4nm, and maximum corrosion resistance of 3.31×10−5Ω has been obtained.

Abstract:Cyclic voltammetry, chronoamperometry in conjunction with scanning electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy techniques have been performed to study the anodic electrodeposition behavior of ceria films onto 316L stainless steel substrate. Results show that the deposition process of ceria is controlled by diffusion under our experimental conditions. The dominated nucleation and growth mechanism for CeO2 deposition transforms from two-dimensional (2D) to three-dimensional (3D) with increasing the deposition time, and 3D process starts prior to the completion of 2D layers. The poor conductivity of the preformed CeO2 film causes the high deposition overpotential and therefore refines the grain size of CeO2 particles.

Abstract:Cerium oxide nanoparticles (CeNPs) are recognized as functional materials with suitability in diverse applications. Conventional synthesis of CeNPs involves direct addition of alkaline solutions and/or precipitating agents to cerium solutions. Rapid changes in solution concentrations and ligand introduction result in less control over particle size and dispersity. Here, we report a simple hydrothermal synthesis of cubic shaped CeNPs through homogenous precipitation, achieved by introduction of acetate molecules. A distinct trend in CeNPs transitioning from octahedral to cubic morphologies was observed through a series of experiments. Results from experimental and computational studies have demonstrated that acetate plays an important role in directing the morphological transition of CeNPs and providing a pH-buffered environment. The formation of Ce(IV)-acetate complexes not only stabilizes aqueous Ce(IV) but also inhibits its hydrolysis in conditions of lower pH. The stabilization of Ce(IV) ions is also favorably weakened during the hydrothermal treatment, leading to successful homogeneous precipitation and the formation of mono-dispersed cubic-shaped CeNPs.

This article presents the results of a study of the conditions for the deposition of cerium(IV) oxide nanoparticles, a detailed variation of the parameters of the syntheses, and assessment of their effectiveness from the point of view of the morphology of the resulting structures. The conditions for obtaining nanoparticles with optimal physicochemical properties, high stability, and reproducibility of synthesis have been selected.

Abstract:This study contributed to a better understanding of the behavior of nanoparticles (NPs) in dynamic water. First, the aggregation behavior of CeO2 NPs at different pH values in various salt solutions was examined to determine the appropriate hydrochemical conditions for hydrodynamics study. Second, the aggregation behavior of CeO2 NPs under different shear forces was investigated at pH 4 and ionic strength 0 in various salt solutions to find out whether shear forces could influence the stability of the nanoparticles and if yes, how. Also, five-stage sedimentation tests were conducted to understand the influence of shear stress on the vertical distribution of CeO2 NPs in natural waters. The aggregation test showed that the shear force could increase the collision efficiency between NPs during aggregation and cause a relatively large mass of NPs to remain in suspension. Consequently, the nanoparticles had a greater possibility of continued aggregation. The sedimentation test under static conditions indicated that a large mass of NPs (>1000 nm) sink to the bottom layer, leaving only small aggregates dispersed in the upper or middle layer of the solution. However, later sedimentation studies under stirring conditions demonstrated that shear forces can disrupt this stratification phenomenon. These results suggest that shear forces can influence the spatial distribution of NPs in natural waters, which might lead to different toxicities of CeO2 NPs to aquatic organisms distributed in the different water layers. This study contributes to a better understanding of nanomaterial toxicology and provides a way for further research.Graphical Abstract

Abstract:In this paper, nanocrystalline cerium dioxide (CeO2) thin films with thicknesses of 41–334nm were grown on glass substrates at 450°C by pulsed spray-evaporation chemical vapor deposition (PSE-CVD). Through changing the film thickness, the texture and the band gap energy of CeO2 were altered in a wide range, which implies promising applications in microelectronics, optoelectronics and photocatalysis. X-ray diffraction (XRD) shows that all films grown by this process crystallize in the cubic structure, however, evident changes in the preferred orientation were found when increasing the film thickness. Atomic force micrographs of a 334-nm-thick film indicate a very uniform surface morphology composed of a sub-micrometer sized taper-like structure. Optical measurements show high transparency for all films and reveal a systematic change in the band gap energy with the film thickness.

Abstract:We exploit a precipitation-redispersion mechanism for complexation of short chain polyelectrolytes with cerium oxide nanoparticles to extend their stability ranges. As synthesized, cerium oxide sols at pH 1.4 consist of monodisperse cationic nanocrystalline particles having a hydrodynamic diameter of 10 nm and a molecular weight 400000 gmol-1. We show that short chain uncharged poly(acrylic acid) at low pH when added to a cerium oxide sols leads to macroscopic precipitation. As the pH is increased, the solution spontaneously redisperses into a clear solution of single particles with an anionic poly(acrylic acid) corona. The structure and dynamics of cerium oxide nanosols and their hybrid polymer-inorganic complexes in solution are investigated by static and dynamic light scattering, X-ray scattering, and by chemical analysis. Quantitative analysis of the redispersed sol gives rise to an estimate of 40 - 50 polymer chains per particle for stable suspension. This amount represents 20 % of the mass of the polymer-nanoparticle complexes. This complexation adds utility to the otherwise unstable cerium oxide dispersions by extending the range of stability of the sols in terms of pH, ionic strength and concentration.

Results show that both the film thickness and particle size of ceria layers increase whereas both the film porosity and Ce(III) content decrease with the augment of ethanol content from 0 to 70%; The important role of ethanol content in enhancing the anodic deposition rate of ceria film may be mostly achieved by the simultaneously photo generated electrons (e(cb)(-)). Abstract:This study investigates the colloid systems and interfaces stability of cerium oxide nanoparticles in aqueous environments as a function of pH, monovalent cations (Na+) and divalent cations (Ca2+), and humic substances (humic acid (HA) and fulvic acid (FA)). Results show that the solution chemistry affected the colloidal stability and aggregation kinetics of CeO2 NPs. The pH point of zero charge (pHPZC) of CeO2 NPs was measured at pH 10.2 with diameter of CeO2 NPs aggregates of ∼1,700 nm. The effects of Na+ and Ca2+ and HA and FA on the magnitudes and rates of aggregation were pH-dependent. In addition, when salts were present in the aqueous systems, although the CeO2 NPs were stable at pH pHPZC (except for 0.5 mM CaCl2), the aggregation was enhanced at pH = pHPZC, with the diameter of CeO2 NPs in the ∼1,300–3,600 nm range. HA also stabilized CeO2 NPs under pH > pHPZC with an enhanced aggregation of pH = pHPZC with the diameter of CeO2 NPs in the ∼1,500–1,900 nm range, and in the presence of 0 and 1 mM of NaCl/CaCl2 at pH < pHPZC. At three pH levels (8.2, 10.2, and 12.2) and under all different electrolyte concentrations (0–1 mM of NaCl or CaCl2), FA (0.14 mg/L) exhibited a greater degree of efficiency in stabilizing CeO2 NPs than HA (5 mg/L), with CeO2 NPs aggregates growing at low rates and resulting in diameter of ∼95–115 nm.

Abstract:2024 aluminum alloy was used as the substrate to prepare an anodic oxide film from sulfuric acid electrolyte containing CeO2 nanoparticles with different concentrations. The influence of concentration of CeO2 nanoparticles on the morphology, component, phase composition, microhardness, surface wettability and corrosion resistance of anodic oxide film was studied. The results show that adding proper amount of CeO2 nanoparticles can play the role of shielding and filling, which is beneficial to improve the surface smoothness and compactness of anodic oxide film, and thus improve its properties. When the concentration of CeO2 nanoparticles is 2.5 g/L, the porosity of the anodic oxide film is only 16.4%, showing compact surface. The anodic oxide film is composed of Al, O, S and Ce elements with α-Al2O3 and γ-Al2O3 phases, and exhibits superhydrophobic state with better corrosion resistance and higher microhardness.

Abstract:The sodium laurate was used to modificate the nanometer CeO2 which was prepared in this work.At first all the effect factors were investigated respectively and each optimum range of factors was obtained.Because of cross action between the four factors,the orthogonal tests were done in order to obtain the optimum condition of modification.The modifier concentration was 2.1 g/L,the modification temperature was 45 ℃,the modification pH was 6 and modification time was 18 min.The lipophilicity of the nanometer CeO2 which was modified under optimum condition was 0.48.The powders were well dispersed in alcohol.

Abstract:CeO2 thin films were deposited on stainless steel (SS) and indium tin oxide (ITO)-coated glass by simultaneous anodic and cathodic electrodeposition, and the influence of negative potential on the formation of ceria films was studied with scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, van der Pauw measurements, UV-visible spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The results show that CeO2 films on the anode are slightly affected by the potential, but the particle size, crystal orientation, strain, film thickness, resistivity and Ce(III) content of the films on the cathode increases with increasing potential on the SS substrate. Contradictory to the results of the SS cathode, redshift (E-d changed from 3.95 eV to 3.56 eV and E-i changed from 3.42 eV to 3.04 eV) occurring in the absorption spectrum of CeO2 deposited on the ITO-coated glass cathode indicates that the content of Ce3+ in the cathodic films is dependent on the adopted substrates and decreases as the applied potential is increased. Synthesis of stable cerium oxide nanoparticles coated with phosphonic acid-based functional polymers

Abstract:Functional polymers, such as poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) terminated with a single phosphonic acid, hereafter PEGik-Ph are often applied to coat metal oxide surfaces during post synthesis steps, but are not sufficient to stabilize sub-10 nm particles in protein-rich biofluids. The instability is attributed to the weak binding affinity of post-grafted phosphonic acid groups, resulting in a gradual detachment of the polymers the surface. Here, we assess these polymers as coating agents using an alternative route, namely the one-step wet-chemical synthesis, where PEGik-Ph is introduced with cerium precursors during the synthesis. Characterization of the coated cerium oxide nanoparticles indicates a core-shell structure, where the cores are 3 nm cerium oxide and the shell consists of functionalized PEG polymers in a brush configuration. Results show that cerium oxide nanoparticles coated with PEG1k-Ph and PEG2k-Ph are of potential interest for applications as nanomedicine due to their high Ce(III) content and increased colloidal stability in cell culture media. We further demonstrate that the cerium oxide nanoparticles in the presence of hydrogen peroxide show an additional absorbance band in the UV-vis spectrum, which is attributed to Ce-O22- peroxo-complexes and could be used in the evaluation of their catalytic activity for scavenging reactive oxygen species.

Abstract:Nano-dispersed cerium dioxide is promising for use in medicine due to its unique physicochemical properties, including low toxicity, the safety of in vivo usage, active participation in different redox processes occurring in living cells, and its regenerative potential, manifested in the ability of CeO2 to participate repeatedly in redox reactions. In this work, we examined the biological activity of cerium dioxide nanoparticles (CeO2 NPs) synthesized by precipitation in mixed water/alcohol solutions at constant pH=9. This synthesis method allowed controlling the size and Ce3+/Ce4+ proportion on the surface of NPs, changing the synthesis conditions and obtaining highly stable suspensions of "naked" CeO2 NPs. Changes in the surface properties upon contact of CeO2 NPs with protein-rich media, e.g., bovine serum albumin and DMEM cell culture medium supplemented with 10% fetal bovine serum, the characteristics of nanoparticle uptake by mouse aortic endothelial cells and the antioxidant activity of the nanoparticles of different size were investigated by various state-of-the-art analytical methods.

Abstract:In a recent publication, we have highlighted the potential of phosphonic acid terminated PEG oligomers to functionalize strong UV absorption cerium oxide nanoparticles[1], which yield suspensions that are stable in aqueous or organic solvents and are redispersible in different solvent after freeze-drying. In the present work, we highlight the interfacial activity of the functional ceria nanoparticles and their potential to modify hydrophobic surfaces. We first investigated Phosphonated-PEG amphiphilic oligomers behavior as strong surface active species forming irreversibly adsorbed layers. We then show that the oligomers interfacial properties translate to the functional nanoparticles. In particular, the addition of a small fraction of phosphonated-PEG oligomers with an extra C16 aliphatic chain (stickers) into the formulation enabled the tuning of i) the nanoparticles adsorption at the air/water, polystyrene/water, oil/water interfaces and ii) the particle/particle interaction in aqueous solutions. We also found that dense and closely packed two dimensional monolayers of nanoceria can be formed by spontaneous adsorption or surface compression using a Langmuir trough. A hexagonal organization controlled by reversible and repulsive repulsion has been characterized by GISAXS. Mono- or multilayers can also be stably formed or transferred on solid surfaces. Our results are key features in the field of polymer surface modification, solid stabilized emulsions (Pickering) or supracolloidal assemblies.

Abstract:Nanocrystalline ceria thin films have been prepared by photo-assisted anodic deposition in two kinds of solutions (water and 70% v/v ethanol-water) containing different sodium nitrate concentrations (0, 0.15, 0.20, 0.25 and 0.30moll−1) onto 316L surface. The synergistic effect of nitrate content and ethanol on the formation of ceria films was studied with scanning electron microscopy, ellipsometry, X-ray diffraction, and Raman, UV–visible, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Results show that the current density, film thickness, particle size and Ce(IV) content increase with increasing nitrate concentration in water solution whereas decrease in 70% v/v ethanol-water solution. When the nitrate concentration is higher than 0.25moll−1, the positive function of nitrate on the growth of ceria films is more prominent than ethanol. The action mechanism of nitrate on the photoelectrochemical deposition of CeO2 in two different solutions has been discussed in details.
Effect of CeO2-coating on the electrochemical performances of LiFePO4/C cathode material

Abstract:The effect of CeO 2 coating on LiFePO 4 /C cathode material has been investigated. The crystalline structure and morphology of the synthesized powders have been characterized by XRD, SEM, TEM and their electrochemical performances both at room temperature and low temperature are evaluated by CV, EIS and galvanostatic charge/discharge tests. It is found that, nano-CeO 2 particles distribute on the surface of LiFePO 4 without destroying the crystal structure of the bulk material. The CeO 2 -coated LiFePO 4 /C cathode material shows improved lithium insertion/extraction capacity and electrode kinetics, especially at high rates and low temperature. At −20 °C, the CeO 2 -coated material delivers discharge capacity of 99.7 mAh/g at 0.1 C rate and the capacity retention of 98.6% is obtained after 30 cycles at various charge/discharge rates. The results indicate that the surface treatment should be an effective way to improve the comprehensive properties of the cathode materials for lithium ion batteries.
