Abstract:Microcavity lasers based on erbium-doped lithium niobate on insulator (LNOI), which are key devices for LNOI integrated photonics, have attracted significant attention recently. In this study, we report the realization of a C-band single-mode laser using the Vernier effect in two coupled erbium-doped LNOI microrings with different radii under the pump of a 980-nm continuous laser. The laser, operating stably over a large range of pumping power, has a pump threshold of about 200 µW and a side-mode suppression ratio exceeding 26 dB. The high-performance LNOI single-mode laser will promote the development of lithium niobate integrated photonics.

Abstract: Integrated single-mode microlasers with ultra-narrow linewidths play a game-changing role in a broad spectrum of applications ranging from coherent communication and LIDAR to metrology and sensing. Generation of such light sources in a controllable and cost-effective manner remains an outstanding challenge due to the difficulties in the realization of ultra-high Q active micro-resonators with suppressed mode numbers. Here, we report a microlaser generated in an ultra-high Q Erbium doped lithium niobate (LN) micro-disk. Through the formation of coherently combined polygon modes at both pump and laser wavelengths, the microlaser exhibits single mode operation with an ultra-narrow-linewidth of 98 Hz. In combination with the superior electro-optic and nonlinear optical properties of LN crystal, the mass-producible on-chip single-mode microlaser will provide an essential building block for the photonic integrated circuits demanding high precision frequency control and reconfigurability.

Abstract:Single-frequency ultranarrow linewidth on-chip microlasers with a fast wavelength tunability play a game-changing role in a broad spectrum of applications ranging from coherent communication, light detection and ranging, to metrology and sensing. Design and fabrication of such light sources remain a challenge due to the difficulties in making a laser cavity that has an ultrahigh optical quality (Q) factor and supports only a single lasing frequency simultaneously. Here, we demonstrate a unique single-frequency ultranarrow linewidth lasing mechanism on an erbium ion-doped lithium niobate (LN) microdisk through simultaneous excitation of high-Q polygon modes at both pump and laser wavelengths. As the polygon modes are sparse within the optical gain bandwidth compared with the whispering gallery mode counterpart, while their Q factors (above 10 million) are even higher due to the significantly reduced scattering on their propagation paths, single-frequency lasing with a linewidth as narrow as 322 Hz is observed. The measured linewidth is three orders of magnitude narrower than the previous record in on-chip LN microlasers. Finally, enabled by the strong linear electro-optic effect of LN, real-time electro-optical tuning of the microlaser with a high tuning efficiency of similar to 50 pm/100 V is demonstrated.

Abstract:Erbium-doped lithium niobate on insulator (Er:LNOI) is a promising platform for photonic integrated circuits as it adds gain to the LNOI system and enables on-chip lasers and amplifiers. A challenge for the Er:LNOI laser is to increase its output power while maintaining single-frequency and single (-transverse)-mode operation. In this work, we demonstrate that single-frequency and single-mode operation can be achieved even in a single multi-mode Er:LNOI microring by introducing mode-dependent loss and gain competition. In a single microring with a free spectral range of 192 GHz, we have achieved single-mode lasing with an output power of 2.1 µW, a side-mode suppression of 35.5 dB, and a linewidth of 0.9 MHz.

Abstract:Integrated narrow-linewidth lasers are the key devices in compact coherent optical systems of metrology, sensing, and optical microwave generation. Here, we demonstrate a hybrid integrated laser based on an optical negative feedback scheme. The laser is composed of a commercial distributed feedback (DFB) laser diode and an on-chip micro-resonator with a Q-factor of 0.815 million. The feedback optical field is coupled back to the laser cavity through the back facet. Therefore, the laser can maintain the lasing efficiency of the DFB laser diode. The linewidth of the DFB laser diode is compressed from 2 MHz to 6 kHz, corresponding to the linewidth reduction factor of 25.2 dB. The theoretical result shows that the laser performance still has a huge improvement margin through precise control of the detuning between laser frequency and the micro-resonator, as well as the phase delay of the feedback optical field. The hybrid narrow-linewidth laser diode has wide application prospects in coherent optical systems benefitting from the low cost and volume productivity.

Abstract:The erbium-doped lithium niobate on insulator (Er:LNOI) platform has great promise in the application of telecommunication, microwave photonics, and quantum photonics, due to its excellent electro-optic, piezo-electric, nonlinear nature, as well as the gain characteristics in the telecommunication C-band. Here, we report a single-frequency Er:LNOI integrated laser based on a dual-cavity structure. Facilitated by the Vernier effect and gain competition, the single-frequency laser can operate stably at 1531 nm wavelength with a 1484 nm pump laser. The output laser has a power of 0.31 µW, a linewidth of 1.2 MHz, and a side mode suppression ratio of 31 dB. Our work allows the direct integration of this laser source with existing LNOI components and paves the way for a fully integrated LNOI system.

Abstract:Lithium niobate on insulator (LNOI), regarded as an important candidate platform for optical integration due to its excellent nonlinear, electro-optic, and other physical properties, has become a research hotspot. A light source, as an essential component for an integrated optical system, is urgently needed. In this Letter, we reported the realization of 1550 nm band on-chip LNOI microlasers based on erbium-doped LNOI ring cavities with loaded quality factors higher than 1 million at ∼970nm, which were fabricated by using electron beam lithography and inductively coupled plasma reactive ion etching processes. These microlasers demonstrated a low pump threshold of ∼20µW and stable performance under the pump of a 980 nm band continuous laser. Comb-like laser spectra spanning from 1510 to 1580 nm were observed in a high pump power regime, which lays the foundation of the realization of pulsed laser and frequency combs on a rare-earth ion-doped LNOI platform. This Letter effectively promotes the development of on-chip integrated active LNOI devices.

Abstract:Lithium niobate on insulator (LNOI) provides a platform for the fundamental physics investigations and practical applications of integrated photonics. However, as an indispensable building block of integrated photonics, lasers are in short supply. In this paper, erbium-doped LNOI laser in the 1550-nm band was demonstrated in microdisk cavities with high quality factors fabricated in batches by UV exposure, inductively coupled plasma reactive ion etching, and chemomechanical polishing. The threshold and conversion efficiency of the erbium-doped LNOI microdisk laser were measured to be lower than 1 mW and 6.5×10−5%, respectively. This work will benefit the development of integrated photonics based on LNOI.

Abstract:The erbium-doped lithium niobate on insulator (LNOI) laser plays an important role in the complete photonic integrated circuits (PICs). Here, we demonstrate an integrated tunable whispering gallery single-mode laser (WGSML) by making use of a coupled microdisk and microring on LNOI. A 974 nm single-mode pump light can have an excellent resonance in the designed microdisk, which is beneficial to the whispering gallery mode (WGM) laser generation. The WGSML at 1560.40 nm with a maximum 31.4 dB side mode suppression ratio (SMSR) has been achieved. By regulating the temperature, the output power of the WGSML increases, and the central wavelength can be changed from 1560.30 to 1560.40 nm. Furthermore, 1560.60 and 1565.00 nm WGSMLs have been achieved by changing the coupling gap width between the microdisk and microring. We can also use the electro-optic effect of LNOI to obtain more accurate adjustable WGSMLs in further research. (C) 2021 Optical Society of America

Abstract:Novel design concepts, simulations and experimental results on semiconductor lasers and integrated photonic devices are presented, for both telecom and biomedical applications. It is shown that the Vernier effect can be used to increase the tuning range of a digitally wavelength-switchable semiconductor laser, and to increase the sensitivity of passive and active waveguide sensors. The wavelength switchable laser based on V-coupled cavity has a large tolerance on the accuracy of the setting current. For the middle 50% of the current range corresponding to a wavelength channel, the wavelength varies by only ±0.01nm from the set value for 0.8nm channel spacing and the SMSR is maintained above 38dB. Wavelength switching over 8 consecutive channels is experimentally demonstrated using a single electrode control. The wavelength shift sensitivity of a waveguide sensor based on two cascaded microring resonators with Vernier effect can reach 1300nm/RIU, over an order of magnitude higher than a single ring sensor. A monolithic integrated intracavity biosensor based on V-coupled cavity laser is also proposed and analyzed. By simply detecting the power ratio of two output ports, a refractive index sensitivity in the order of 10-8 RIU can be achieved thanks to the intracavity sensing mechanism and the Vernier effect.

Abstract:Recently, on-chip single-mode laser emission has attracted considerable research attention due to its wide applications. While most of single-mode lasers in coupled microdisks or microrings have been qualitatively explained by either Vernier effect or inversed Vernier effect, none of them have been experimentally confirmed. Here, we studied the mechanism for single-mode operation in coupled microdisks. We found that the mode numbers had been significantly reduced to nearly single-mode within a large pumping power range from threshold to gain saturation. The detail laser spectra showed that the largest gain and the first lasing peak were mainly generated by one disk and the laser intensity was proportional to the frequency detuning. The corresponding theoretical analysis showed that the experimental observations were dominated by internal coupling within one cavity, which was similar to the recently explored inversed Vernier effect in two coupled microrings. We believe our finding will be important for understanding the previous experimental findings and the development of on-chip single-mode laser.

Abstract:We demonstrate single-mode laser emission in single nanowires. By folding a 200 nm diameter CdSe nanowire to form loop mirrors, single-mode laser emission around 738 nm wavelength is obtained with line width of 0.12 nm and low threshold. The mode selection is realized by the vernier effect of coupled cavities in the folded nanowire. In addition, the loop structure makes it possible to tune the nanowire cavity, opening an opportunity to realize a tunable single-mode nanowire laser.

Abstract:Integrated optical systems based on lithium niobate on insulator (LNOI) have attracted the interest of researchers. Recently, erbium-doped LNOI lasers have been realized. However, the reported lasers have a relatively lower conversion efficiency and only operate in the 1550 nm band. In this paper, we demonstrate an LNOI laser operating in the 1060 nm band based on a high Q factor ytterbium-doped LNOI microdisk cavity. The threshold and the conversion efficiency of the laser are 21.19 mu W and 1.36%, respectively. To our knowledge, the conversion efficiency is the highest among the reported rare-earth-doped LNOI lasers. This research extends the operating band of LNOI lasers and shows the potential in realizing high-power LNOI lasers. (C) 2022 Optica Publishing Group

Abstract:The wide direct bandgap and strong exciton binding energy of ZnO have inspired examinations of ultraviolet lasing over the previous decades. However, regulation of the lasing mode, especially the realization of single mode lasing, is still a challenge. In this study, a ZnO comb-like structure with an array of microrods was selected to design coupled whispering-gallery-mode cavities, wherein the naturally varied air-gap between the adjacent microrods created a flexible condition for optical field coupling without any complicated micromanipulation. Spectral behaviour of lasing and coupling interaction between coupled ZnO microrods were systematically investigated. By regulating the nano-scale inter-space of dual coupled microrods, stable single-mode lasing with a higher Q factor and lower threshold was obtained successfully based on the Vernier effect. The formation conditions and the mechanism of single-mode lasing derived from the coupled ZnO microrods were discussed in detail. It also demonstrated an approach to construct high quality single-mode lasing by tuning the diameters of the coupled ZnO microrods.

Abstract:It is essential to develop a single mode operation and improve the performance of lasing in order to ensure practical applicability of microlasers and nanolasers. In this paper, two hexagonal microteeth with varied nanoscaled air-gaps of a ZnO microcomb are used to construct coupled whispering-gallery cavities. This is done to achieve a stable single mode lasing based on Vernier effect without requiring any complicated or sophisticated manipulation to achieve positioning with nanoscale precision. Optical gain and the corresponding ultraviolet lasing performance were improved greatly through coupling with localized surface plasmons of Pt nanoparticles. The ZnO/Pt hybrid microcavities achieved a seven-fold enhancement of intensity of single mode lasing with higher side-mode suppression ratio and lower threshold. The mechanism that led to this enhancement has been described in detail.

Abstract:Integrated optical amplifiers and light sources are of great significance for photonic integrated circuits (PICs) and have attracted many research interests. Doping rare-earth ions in materials as a solution to realize efficient optical amplifiers and lasing has been investigated a lot. We investigated the erbium-doped lithium niobate on insulator (LNOI). Here, we fabricated a 1-mol% erbium-doped LNOI microdisk with a high-quality factor. C-band laser emission at ∼1530 and ∼1560 nm (linewidth 0.12 nm) from the high-Q erbium-doped LNOI microdisk was demonstrated with 974- and 1460-nm pumping. What’s more, spiral waveguide amplifiers were also fabricated by the CMOS-compatible technique. A maximum internal net gain of 8.3 dB at 1530 nm indicating a net gain per unit length of 15.6 dB/cm with a compact spiral waveguide of 5.3 mm length and ~0.06 mm2 footprint was demonstrated.

Abstract:The commercialization of lithium niobate on insulator (LNOI) wafer has resulted in significant on-chip photonic integration application owing to its remarkable photonic, acousto-optic, electro-optic, and piezoelectric nature. In recent years, a variety of high-performance on-chip LNOI-based photonic devices have been realized. In this study, we developed a 1-mol% erbium-doped lithium niobate crystal and its LNOI on a silicon substrate and fabricated an erbium-doped LNOI microdisk with high quality factor (∼ 1.05×105). C-band laser emission at ∼1530 and ∼1560 nm (linewidth 0.12 nm) from the high-Q erbium-doped LNOI microdisk was demonstrated with 974- and 1460-nm pumping, with the latter having better thermal stability. This microlaser would play an important role in the photonic integrated circuits of the lithium niobate platform.

Abstract:We demonstrate monolithic integration of an electro-optically (EO) tunable microring laser on lithium niobate on insulator (LNOI) platform. The device is fabricated by photolithography assisted chemo-mechanical etching, and the pump laser is evanescently coupled into the erbium (${\rm{E}}{{\rm{r}}^{3 +}}$)-doped lithium niobate (LN) microring laser using an undoped LN waveguide mounted above the microring. The quality factor of the LN microring resonator is measured as high as ${1.54} \times {{1}}{{{0}}^5}$ at the wavelength of 1542 nm. Lasing action can be observed at a pump power threshold below 3.5 mW using a 980 nm continuous-wave pump laser. Finally, tuning of the laser wavelength is achieved by varying the electric voltage on the microelectrodes fabricated in the vicinity of a microring waveguide, showing an EO coefficient of 0.33 pm/V.
