Abstract:Reverse atom transfer radical polymerization of methyl acrylate in the presence of a conventional radical initiator (2,2'-azoisobutyronitrile, AIBN) in bulk was successfully implemented via a new polymerization procedure. The system first reacts at 65-70 degrees C for ten hours, then polymerizes at 100 degrees C. Various mole ratios of AIBN to (CuCl2)-Cl-II were used in this work, all of which result in a well-controlled radical polymerization with high initiation efficiency and narrow molecular weight distribution, i.e., the polydispersity is as low as (M) over bar(w)/(M) over bar(n) = 1.36.

Abstract:The reverse ATRP of MMA using AIBN/FeCl3/ isophthalic acid as the initiating system was successfully performed. The new initiating system can be used to synthesize PMMA with high molecular weight and narrow polydispersity index. The polymerization shows ‘living’/controlled characteristics. Compared with other initiating system used in reverse ATRP, the easy availability and non-toxicity of isophthalic acid make it very attractive.

Abstract:The reverse atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) of methyl acrylate can be realized with the initiating system, AIBN/CuCl2/bpy, in bulk by means of a new polymerization procedure. The reverse ATRP of styrene is also accessible using BPO/CuCl2/bpy as the initiating system. The initiation mechanism in reverse ATRP with BPO is different from that with AIBN due to the redox reaction between BPO and CuI generated from the reaction of radicals with CuII. The "living"/controlled radical polymerization of methyl methacrylate and styrene can be implemented using BPO/CuICl/bpy as the initiating system in solvents at ambient temperature (40°C). The mechanism suggested the initiation is a redox reaction, and the propagation is identical with that of ATRP.

Abstract:J. S. Wang and K. Matyjaszewaki (1995) reported that in addition to a typical atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) initiating system using alkyl halide (R-X) as initiator and transition metal species complexed with suitable ligand (Mt/Lx) as catalyst, R X/Mt/Lx, a 'Living' controlled process is observed using a conventional radical initiator, AIBN, and a transition metal compound at higher oxidation state (e.g. CuCl 2) complexed with a suitable ligand (e.g., 2,2′-bipyridine [BPY]) as catalyst. This initiating system is suitable to the polymerization of styrene, but it requires the high molar ratio of CuCl 2/AIBN (1:10). By means of a new polymerization procedure, the system first reacts at about 65° to 70°C for 10 h, then polymerizes at 130°C. Using the initiating system AIBN/CuCl 2/BPY (1:2:6), the ATRP of styrene was implemented.

Abstract:Reverse atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) of methyl methacrylate (MMA) employing 2,2-azobisisobutyronitrile (AIBN)/CuCl2/bipyridine(bipy) as the initiating system was approached at 80 °C in two ionic liquids, 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate ([C4mim][BF4]) and 1-dodecyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate ([C12mim][BF4]), respectively. The polymerization in [C12mim][BF4] proceeded in a well-controlled manner as evidenced by kinetic studies, end group analysis, chain extension, and block copolymerization results, but not in [C4mim][BF4] presumably due to poor solubility of PMMA in it. The kinetic study of reverse ATRP of MMA in recycled [C12mim][BF4] suggested that this ionic liquid could be re-used as reaction solvent after simple purification, without affecting the living nature of polymerization.

Abstract:The reversible-deactivation radical polymerization (RDRP) of methyl methacrylate (MMA) was carried out utilizing an alkyl iodide in situ formed as initiator and dicyclohexylcarbodiimide (DCC) or N,N'diisopropylcarbodiimide (DIC) as highly efficient organic catalysts for the first time. Firstly, the catalytic activity of the two catalysts was demonstrated and compared. The control of the polymerization by DCC was better than that by DIC under the same experimental conditions. Then the influence of the amount of catalyst DCC, the amount of traditional initiators and the type of solvents on the polymerization was investigated in detail. The results show that the addition of DCC or DIC catalyst can effectively reduce the polydispersity index (PDI = Mw/Mn), as compared with the reverse iodine chain transfer polymerization (RITP). The catalytic performance is excellent with the ratio of [MMA](0):[I-2](0):[ABVN](0):[DCC](0) = 200: 1:1.7:4. The measured molecular weight by GPC is consistent with the theoretical molecular weight, and the molecular weight increases linearly with the increase in conversion rate. The molecular weight polydispersity index is small (PDI < 1.26). The polymerizations of MMA in different solvents were carried out. The induction period is shortened and the polymerization rate is increased with the increase of catalyst or initiator amount. The polymerizations have good control effect in toluene, benzene, tetrahydrofuran (THF), anisole. The structure and the iodine-end-capped structure of the obtained PMMA was demonstrated by H-1-NMR spectrum. The calculated M-n,M-NMR was in good agreement with Mn, GPC, and the fraction of iodine chain end of the PMMA chains was up to 97.5%, and the iodine terminus could be efficiently reactivated for chain extension. Last, the mechanism of the polymerization mediated by carbodiimide is discussed based on free radical trapping experiments and ultraviolet absorption. The high conversion of CP-I to CPo radical catalyzed by DIC and the complexation peak of I-2/carbodiimide detected by ultraviolet absorption spectroscopy demonstrate that the polymerization catalyzed by carbodiimide proceeds according to the reversible complexation mediated polymerization mechanism.

Abstract:Reverse atom transfer radical polymerization of styrene in the presence of a conventional radical initiator (benzoylperoxide, BPO) in bulk was successfully implemented via a new polymerization procedure. The system first reacts at 70 degrees C for ten hours, then polymerizes at 110 degrees C, which results in a well-controlled radical polymerization with high initiation efficiency and narrow molecular weight distribution of the resulting polymer, i.e., the polydispersity is as low as M-w/M-n = 1.32. The initiation mechanism of BPO is different from that of AIBN because there is redox reaction between BPO and Cu-I generated from the reaction of radicals with Cu-II. The initiation mechanism of BPO/(CuCl2)-Cl-II/bpy is deduced through the experimental data. The molecular weight of the resultant polymer is in agreement with the theoretical value calculated in accordance with the aforementioned mechanism.

Abstract:Reverse atom transfer radical polymerization (RATRP) of methyl methacrylate (MMA) with azobisisobutyronitrile (AIBN)/FeCl3/lactic acid as initiating system was successfully carried out in N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF) for the first time. Kinetics as well as molecular weight distribution data indicated towards the controlled nature of polymerization. The polymerization not only showed the best control of molecular weight and its distribution but also provided a rather rapid reaction rate with the molar ratio of [MMA]:[AIBN]:[FeCl3]:[lactic acid] = 300 : 1 : 1 : 2. The polymerization rate increased with increasing the polymerization temperature. The apparent activation energy was calculated to be 47.90 kJ/mol. New Initiation Systems For Atom Transfer Radical Polymerization

Abstract:This review summarizes our achievements in designing new initiation systems for atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). First-order kinetics and extension experiments revealed the living nature of these reactions. Tailor-made vinyl polymers with functional end groups were characterized by H-1-NMR and UV-vis spectroscopic analyses. Replacing traditional radical initiators AIBN and BPO, carbon-carbon bond compounds, 1,1,2,2-tetraphenyl-1,2-ethanediol, diethyl 2,3-dicyano-2,3-diphenylsuccinate and diethyl 2,3-dicyano-2,3-di(p-tolyl)succinate, were utilized in reverse ATRP to produce the initiating radical. Sulfur-sulfur bond iniferter, tetraethylthiuram disulfide (TD), in conjunction with CuBr/bpy or NiCl2/PPh3 Complex could control the styrene polymerization via redox reaction. Pseudo-halogen transfer reaction was demonstrated to maintain the dormant-active species equilibrium in normal and reverse ATRP with Cu(S2CNEt2), Cu(S2CNEt2)Cl and Fe(S2CNEt2)(3) as catalysts. The organic halide initiator and reduced transition metal compound that started the living polymerization were produced in situ from the components of TD/FeCl3/PPh3, TD/CuBr2/bpy and Fe(S2CNEt2)(3)/FeCl3/PPh3 systems. Accurate control of UV irradiation time favored the radical generation process in photo ATRP with the 2,2-dimethoxy-2-phenylacetophenone/Fe(S2CNEt2)(3) initiation system.

Abstract:A hexa-substituted ethane thermal iniferter, dietliyl-2,3-dicyano-2,3-di(p-tolyl) succinate (DCDTS), was firstly used as the initiator in the reverse atom transfer radical polymerization (RATRP) of acrylonitrile. FeCl3 coordinated by isophthatic acid (tA) was used as the catalyst in this system. The polymerization in NN-dimethylformamide not only shows the best control of molecular weight and its distribution but also provides rather rapid reaction rate with the ratio of [AN] : [DCDTS] : [FeCl3]: [IA] at 500: 1: 2: 4. The polymers obtained were end-functionalized by chlorine atom, and they were used as macroinitiators to proceed the chain extension polymerization in the presence of FeCl2/IA catalyst system via a conventional ATRP process and polyacrylonitrile obtained was with M-n = 39,260, PDI = 1.25. Abstract:In this original experiment, an ionic liquid, 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate ([C4mim][PF6]), was used as the reaction media for reverse atom transfer radical polymerization of methacrylonitrile (MAN) initiated by azobisisobutyronitrile (AIBN) with FeCl3 and isophthalic acid (IA) as catalyst and ligand. The polymerization in [C4mim][PF6] proceeded in a well-controlled manner as evidenced by kinetic studies. Compared with the polymerization in N, N-dimethylformamide (DMF), the polymerization in [C4mim][PF6] not only showed better control of molecular weight and narrower molecular weight distribution but also provided more rapid reaction rate with the ratio of [MAN]:[AIBN]:[FeCl3]:[IA] at 300:1:2:4. The block copolymer PMAN-b-PSt was obtained via a conventional ATRP process in [C4mim][PF6] by using the resulting PMAN as macroinitiator. [C4mim][PF6] and FeCl3/IA could be easily recycled and reused and had no effect on the living nature of reverse atom transfer radical polymerization of MAN.

Abstract:The reverse atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) of methyl methacrylate (MMA) was successfully carried out in 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate with 2,2'-azobisisobutyronitrile/CuCl2/bipyridine as the initiating system, which had been reported as not able to promote a controlled process of MMA in bulk. The living nature of the polymerization was confirmed by kinetic studies, end-group analysis, chain extension, and block copolymerization results. The polydispersity of the polymer obtained was quite narrow, with a weight-average molecular weight/ number-average molecular weight ratio of less than 1.2. In comparison with other reverse ATRPs in bulk or conventional solvents, a much smaller amount of the catalyst was used. Abstract:Reversible chain transfer catalyzed polymerization (RTCP) is a practical and efficient process for the precise synthesis of polymers with special architecture by using simple phenols (2,4,6-trimethylphenol, TMP) or hydrocarbons (xanthene, XT) as efficient organocatalysts. Herein, alkyl iodide (R-I), which was generated from in situ bromine-iodine transformation of alkyl bromide (R-Br) with sodium iodide (NaI), was served as initiator to mediate RTCP with TMP or XT. MMA and other functional methacrylates, including GMA, DEAM, DMAEMA and BzMA, were successfully initiated by combining organocatalysts and azo initiators to yield polymers with low-polydispersity (Mw/Mn=1.1–1.5) and ideal monomer conversions (50%–90%) at moderate temperature. Moreover, 3-armstar polymers were also obtained by this method. The high chain-end fidelity of the obtained poly(methyl methacrylate) with iodine as chain-end group (PMMA-I) was confirmed by chain-extension reaction. The environmentally friendly initiators and organocatalysts exhibit powerful polymerization properties toward RTCP, providing a significant method to synthesize functional polymers.

Abstract:The reverse atom transfer radical polymerization (RATRP) of acrylonitrile (AN) was carried out in N, N-dimethylformamide (DMF) with AIBN as initiator, FeCl3•6H2O/triphenylphosphine (PPh3) and FeCl3•6H2O/pentamethyldle-thylenetrlamlne (PMDETA) as catalytic systems, respectively. Effect of reaction time and initiator concentration on polymerization rate, molecular weight and molecular weight distribution were investigated in detail. The Fourier transform infrared spectrometer (FTIR) and 1H nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (1HNMR) were employed to analyze the chain end of the PAN. Gel permeation chromatography (GPC) was applied to measure the molecular weight and polydispersity index (PDI) of PAN. The polymerization demonstrated a typical pseudo first-order kinetics characteristics as evidenced by the number-average molecular weights (Mn) increasing linearly with monomer conversion; the Mn decreasing with the increasing of the initiator concentration. Meanwhile, the low PDI value (<1.2) indicated the controllability of polymerization.

Abstract:The poly[oligo(ethylene oxide) methyl ether methacrylate]s, POEOMA24 and POEOMA78 with average degree of polymerization (DP) of 24 and 78, respectively, are separately achieved by initiators for continuous activator regeneration (ICAR) atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) of OEOMA300 monomer. The mixtures of [POEOMA24 ]0 /[POEOMA78 ]0 = 1/1, 2/1, or 4/1 are employed as macroinitiator/stabilizer to practice the ICAR ATRP polymerization-induced self-assembly (PISA) of benzyl methacrylate (BnMA) at 65 °C. When the obtained dispersions are sequentially cooled to room temperature, diluted into ethanol, and observed by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) measurement, the cases of [POEOMA24 ]0 /[POEOMA78 ]0 = 1/1 or 2/1 and target DPPB n MA = 100 or 200 lead to nanoparticles with irregular sizes, while the cases of [POEOMA24 ]0 /[POEOMA78 ]0 = 4/1 and target DPPB n MA = 300 give the regular ones. When the obtained dispersions at a high temperature (65 °C) are directly diluted into room temperature ethanol and observed by TEM, nanoparticles with light contrast but clear contour can be observed. The results show that the higher content of POEOMA78 tends to improve the solubility of diblock copolymer and thus leads to insufficient stabilization of the nanoparticles. The morphological difference from the room-temperature and 65 °C dispersions help elucidate the intrinsic character of the PISA system.
Reversible-deactivation Radical Solution Polymerization of Methyl Methacrylate Catalyzed by Tetrabutylammonium Iodide

Abstract:Tetrabutylammonium iodide (BNI) has been found to be a highly efficient organic catalyst for the reversible-deactivation radical polymerization (RDRP) of methyl methacrylate with an in situ formed alkyl iodine initiator. The polymerization results exhibited typical features of "living"/controlled radical polymerization. The polymerization process efficiently controls the molecular weight and chemical structure of the poly (methyl methacrylate) (PMMA). Furthermore, the inhibition period was shortened and the polymerization rate was increased upon the addition of BNI as compared to blank controls. The effect of BNI contents on the controllability of MMA polymerization was also investigated in detail. The results showed that good agreement between theoretical and experimental molar masses (characterized by GPC) was observed for the used molar ratio of I-2 to BNI (1:2, 1:1, 1:0. 5,1:1 and 1:0). The molar ratio of n (MMA ) n(I-2) n(ABVN):n( BNI) = 200 1:1.7:1 is an optimum formula affording polymers with predetermined molecular weight and low-polydispersity polymers (M-w/M-n < 1. 2) at relatively high polymerization rate. The polymerizations of MMA in different solvents were carried out. The polymerizations have good control effect in toluene and benzene (M-w/M-n < 1. 2). The molecular structure and the chain end fidelity of the obtained low-molecular-weight PMMA(M-n,M-GPG = 3300, M-w/M-n = 1. 15) prepared by reversible complexation mediated polymerization (RCMP) were demonstrated by H-1 NMR spectrum. The calculated M-n,M-NMR was in good agreement with and the fraction of iodine chain end of the PMMA chains was up to 91. 6%.

Abstract:2-(Dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate (DMAEMA) was polymerized by aqueous atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) with CuBr/2,2′-bipyridine (Bpy) as a catalyst and methyl α-bromophenylacetate (MBP) as an initiator at room temperature. The resulting poly(DMAEMA) gave a linear molecular weight/conversion relationship and a narrow molecular weight distribution (weight-average molecular weight/number-average molecular weight ∼ 1.2). Six initiators and two ligands were screened, and MBP/Bpy was the best for the ATRP of DMAEMA in water.

Abstract:The living polymerization of N,N-dimethylacrylamide was achieved by atom transfer radical polymerization catalyzed by copper chloride complexed with a new ligand, N,N'-bis(pyridin-2-ylmethyl 3-hexoxo-3-oxopropyl)ethane 1,2-diamine (BPED). With methyl 2-chloropropionate as the initiator, the polymerization reached high conversions (>90%) at 80degreesC and 100degreesC, producing polymers with (M) over bar (n) very close to theoretical values and low polydispersity. The ligand, temperature, and copper halide strongly affected the activity and control of the polymerization.
