Abstract:The term “idea” was used in history of thought in three main meanings: Plato’s eidos; transcendental ides of pure reason in Kants first “Kritik”; and understanding of simple and complicated ideas in the Empiricism of Modernity. Each of these interpretations is in correlation with definite seeing of the University, as well as of the place of Philosophy in it. The medieval University inherited from antiquity the ideal of Paideia, realized by the liberal arts, having their summit in Philosophy, paving the way to Theology. Through the ages this ideal rests in some of the Anglo-Saxon universities with their system of education of the elite by means of liberal arts, The second model incarnated in the projects of the reforms in the beginning of the XIXth Century is associated today with the name of W. von Humboldt. University is a place of Socratic dialogue of the successful scientist with his future collegue, education goes hand by hand with investigation. The mass university of the last decades is directed by Empiricism and Pragmatism, oriented to the maximization of social utility and benefits for the University itself. It is now a corporation among other corporations, providing specialist and experts for them. If there is a need for Philosophy in such University, it appears as a way of rescue from all metaphysical illusions, liberal arts reduced to such offspring of “postmodern” as gender and postcolonial studies.

Abstract:American educator Derek Bok, who is eminent in educational world of the time, hold the idea that tradition and modernity should be dynamically integrated on the aspects of academic mission, academic character and social responsibility. In his view, although mankind has entered the 21st century, academic mission still remains the central mission of the university; however, the idea that the university is an ivory is already out of date, and the standard of academic autonomy is no longer in existence, so universities and university teachers should go beyond the ivory tower and involve into the world. An organic unity of academic and personality is the precondition to ensure that university teachers acquire academic achievements; academic mission and service mission is not in contradiction; system construction should be strengthened to prevent academic personality dissimilation of university teachers under the utilitarianism guidance.

Abstract:What is the future of the university? Many have attempted to unpack what emerging technologies, political pressures, and social scrutiny can do to the status and innovative capacity of universities. While much of the literature has focused on either documenting innovation over practice in research/teaching techniques, or critical reflections on how university business models and academic labor are under threat, less has been debated on the impacts and processes of such changes from a systemic institutional perspective. This article develops a three-fold social-institutional framework to explore the process, purpose, and positioning of changes in knowledge production. I use the case of the economics discipline to explore how institutional ceremonial values, the policing of knowledge creation, and academic cultures as a hierarchical system of prestige can indicate potential structural change. Existing tensions between instrumental innovations and traditional ceremonial aspects that permeate both the university system and the economics discipline suggest two hypotheses to understand future change: (i) a ceremonial encapsulation of new technologies by old structures, exacerbating existing inequalities and monopolies within expertise positioning; or (ii) the rise of new and inclusive cultures within the principles of epistemic democratization and pluralism, co-existing with a new economic and social model of knowledge

Abstract:This article examines the controversial notion of the role and value of the humanities in the contemporary university. It provides a review of the history of the emergence of the humanities in the European universities, arguing that any attempt to justify the presence of the humanities in the modern university in instrumental terms is futile. Through its depiction of the evolution of the humanities as a particular compendium of disciplinary fields, the article demonstrates that the humanities have become a focal point for the exploration of the problems of meaning, significance and truth, which are inherent components of language itself. Through its portrayal of the historical development of the humanities, the article emphasizes the interminable nature of these problems, stressing that the inconclusive quality of these debates is a definitive feature of Modernity itself—the humanities have become the locus for Modernity's self‐awareness. The articulation and extension of this self‐awareness is an imperative that eludes the logic of instrumental reason to provide a justificatory category of its own.

The Crisis of Higher Education: Neoliberalism and the Privileging of "Innovation" in The Twenty-First Century

Abstract:The authors of this paper maintain that challenging the frame of "innovation" as a privileged keyword for higher education is a fresh and useful intervention in the conversation about the neoliberalization of higher education in the United States. Since our home institution, Purdue, is being celebrated by US News for "innovation," the focus on the concept enables us to offer a Purdue lens on the topic. The authors argue that three high profile developments that have taken place since 2013 under the leadership of Purdue President Mitch Daniels-the University Honors College, the Cornerstone Integrated Liberal Arts Program, and Purdue Global-may also be regarded as "ideological innovations." Alongside the laudable aspects of each of these developments, we argue that each serves the administration's plan to decrease faculty power, especially in the humanities, by promoting initiatives that, in each case, increase the precariatization of instructional labor at Purdue and that move curriculum design and the hiring of teaching staff away from traditional academic departments and toward a more centralized model of educational control under the direction of high-level university administrators in and outside the College of Liberal Arts.

Abstract:Prevailing perspectives attribute higher education's immense and increasing importance in modern societies nearly exclusively to the economic value of a college degree and role of higher education in the legitimation of stratification. This forecloses consideration of the possibility that higher education's power and influence may derive, in part, from its own considerable moral or symbolic significance in modern culture. Through analysis of in-depth interviews with adult undergraduates in the United States I explore the meaning of higher education in contemporary culture, drawing principally on institutional theory. The bachelor's degree emerges as the central and default indicator of not only intelligence but valued moral traits: responsibility, tenacity, and ambition. College completion confirms/constitutes graduates as agentic selves to both others and themselves, and indicates assimilation of scientific and cosmopolitan universalism. I suggest that these findings can be explained through three interrelated, institutionalized interpretation rules: education is a strong moral good, education changes the self, and education accesses the universal. And I argue that we must take seriously the insight—often made but little-explored—that higher education is a quasi-religious as well as an economic institution.

Abstract:University cultivates the Elite groups of sciences, technologies and cultures with a set of high-standards. Based upon a comprehensive discipline system, that of teaching-researching system, talent training mode and the way of social service, university can achieve all of these goals. However, all these must be dominated by or under the guidance of the very idea of a university. We can, in the case of so-called comprehensive research universities, find out that not only the idea of a university does presuppose the university’s goal and its limitation of its goal-attainment, but also means how far the university can go with its ideal by reviewing the history of modern university. What the problems we have to deal with are: how does a university commit to assuming the liability for the cultural transmission, nationally or internationally, and how to understand, and then go through the antithetical tension between Elitism and Egalitarianism in modern high education.

Abstract:The idea of a modern university is a constantly changing and often contested concept. This paper traces the idea of a university using three modes. These modes are the Mode 1 Ivory Tower, Mode 2 Factory and Mode 3 Network. This framework draws upon higher education literature as well as three modes of knowledge production. I use these modes as a framework to describe the genealogical and historical development of the university in the Western world. These however are not purely historical and elements of their characteristics can be found within and between university institutions today. A genealogy shows a historical path dependency (i.e a teaching and research institution) of the idea of a university and a new materialism perspective shows the coming together of the many elements of the network assemblage which includes the discourse on the idea of a university clashing with new ideas, technologies and policy. The growth and development of the modern university from small, autonomous, elite and autonomous in mode 1 to large, mass regulated factory with marketplace outputs within neoliberal societies is well documented. The Mode 3 Network University is emerging with a potential for universal access with networked societies and technologies and has many actors influencing its becoming and idea. The 2020 Covid-19 pandemic and a broadening multidisciplinary approach to the field of Networked Learning has been called for and I introduce the possibility of theoretically analysing the becoming and enactment of the Mode 3 Network University using concepts and frameworks from the broad field of New Materialism. Such approaches take into account the complex assemblage and network of actors which are human and non-human in the growing and diversifying university. The growth and marketisation of the university has added to this complexity with commercial 'unbundling' taking place. Degrees, institutions and functions are being unbundled and rebundled and this active complex network of actors including technologies, humans (academics, students, employers, wider public) and the residual path dependency of the three modes are in tension and conflict but come together to enact the modern university. New Material methodologies allow for these many influences to come together in a 'flat ontology' to allow for a more nuanced and new approach to research in Networked Learning.

Abstract:Abstract In the United States, student eagerness to pursue concentrated study in English literature as well as in other humanities fields has plummeted after the financial crisis of 2008. Envisioned strong career demand and high wages upon graduation are major drivers of program choices, and such demand is articulated through wealthy industries that can also offer funding to universities. That said, it becomes self‐fulfilling to contribute to the cliché of the humanities perpetually being in crisis, which occurs when humanities specialists begin valuing their own fields by the measures celebrated by other programs. Is it possible to take the current situation and leverage our strengths toward constructive innovations in English studies that remain true to our own values? To address this question, we first summarize three key ways in which the situation in the United States is distinct from, yet connected to, that of most other countries: extensive decentralization of education policy and funding; high student debt; and opposition to education in Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion and the humanities in general. After reflecting on the opportunities for greater global connection posed by the pandemic‐driven shift to online learning, we discuss some of our own efforts to build a sense of local and international responsibility in our students. The skills, knowledge, and openness to other cultures and identities that we nurture through the literature we teach and the socially invested pedagogy we practice allow us to incorporate ethics and empathy into the design of international economics and to help ensure that a sense of local and global responsibility is part of its operation.
Between Public Justification and Civil Religion: Shared Values in a Divided Time

Abstract:Civil religion as formulated in Robert Bellah's seminal 1967 article, recalling Rousseau's Social Contract, has recently been proposed to build shared values and bridge deep partisan divides. A competing approach to shared values, based on public reason, relies on overlapping consensus in the works of John Rawls. In this paper, we present an in-between strategy that recognizes the insuperable empirical and normative problems of civil religion while using university civic engagement programs to bring about a public square in which religious reasons are found alongside neutral ones, ultimately for the sake of public justification. Having documented recent polarization trends, we consider the last major attempt to defend civil religion from the perspective of democratic solidarity, Phil Gorski's American Covenant, but believe it falls short: based on sociological work and Augustinian insights, we show the risk of domination that Gorski's strategy still entails, not least because of the definitional indeterminacy of civil religion and its overlap with religious nationalism. Paradoxically, a late Rawlsian approach that allows for the initial use of religious reasons, with a generosity proviso of necessary translation into public reason at some point, can lead to a public square with more religious arguments than one theorized explicitly from the perspective of civil religion. This is especially important because, given the discussed polarization trends, universities have taken on an increasingly important civic engagement role even as some still rely on a civil religion approach. We insist on public justification in university civic engagement, and for the sake of doing so take as a starting point Ben Berger's work in favoring civil engagement, which we define as combining moral, political, and social rather than exclusively political commitments. In proposing a novel university shared values mechanism, intended to expose learners to a maximum diversity of opinions and lived experiences, we offer a fresh approach to building trust in cohorts that increases the likelihood of true dialogue across difference.

New Review of Academic Librarianship

Abstract:University libraries are constituted in the literature by a range of overlapping and shifting conceptual models that are deployed to capture, express and legitimise their repurposing, progressive status and function within the university campus. Over the last two decades university libraries have been increasingly characterised as highly responsive and receptive to the fast-moving currents of technological innovation, and emergent teaching and learning paradigms. This paper charts and discusses the evolutionary trajectory of the university library set within an historical context, exploring the discursive influences that have both stimulated and propagated what might be described as progressive transformation. The paper seeks to portray and unpack the Zeitgeist of the academic library that has been cultivated in contemporary times; positioning the university library against a backdrop of global developments that have shaped the university sector from the early 1990s, and offering a macro-level exploration of the increasing status of the university library.

Abstract:Contemporary critical scholarship on the university firmly places new discursive and curricular formations within a global context of neoliberal, neoimperial, and neocolonial processes. Recently, some focus has been given to last century's institutionalization of the interdisciplines (e.g. Ethnic Studies, Cultural Studies, Women's Studies) and how the invitation to become a part of the university has mapped onto repressive liberal fantasies of tolerance and inclusion. With this history in mind, this paper begins with the current wave of student protests and how the institutionalization of difference has structured university responses to new formations of critique. We argue that, though de-escalating the politics of knowledge production and legitimation, a new moral economy has emerged in which universities trade on 'good' students who adhere to prescribed performances of critique and villainize the student–activists who threaten the status quo as a means to manage current crises while retaining social legitimacy.

Abstract:In this chapter, Bernard Yeung raises a controversial issue: that the current stage of industrial and technological revolution creates economic anxiety and doubts on university education’s value. Universities’ response should be sticking to the basics: advance research and train students to be life-long learners. In this context, university and educational institutions need to emphasize principle, data, technology, and human literacy. Vysshee Obrazovanie v Rossii = Higher Education in Russia

Abstract:The article justifies the effectiveness of value-focused education as a strategic approach in education, integrating on a value basis the advantages of subject, personality and practice-oriented education. The axiological triad of university values: veritism, personalism, patriotism is considered as the corresponding value basis. The key structural contradiction of engineering education – between the requirements of the innovative economy to the content of modern engineering education and the environmental imperative – is identified and analyzed. The authors make the case for justifying the value profile of university organizational culture, and propose to refer to it as “axiologics of the university”. They also examine an essential distinction between “value” and “purpose” phenomena as a basis for an operational definition of “value.” Value ambivalence of the phenomenon of engineering is considered. The authors propose to interpret the Heidegger solution of the “question of technology” with regard to a dual challenge facing engineering education: training of a professional – on the one hand, and development of a personality – on the other hand. The authors consider university as a source and model of innovative economy, explore the phenomenon of the “innovation chain”.
