Derek Bok on Academic Ideology and Its Implications

Abstract:American educator Derek Bok, who is eminent in educational world of the time, hold the idea that tradition and modernity should be dynamically integrated on the aspects of academic mission, academic character and social responsibility. In his view, although mankind has entered the 21st century, academic mission still remains the central mission of the university; however, the idea that the university is an ivory is already out of date, and the standard of academic autonomy is no longer in existence, so universities and university teachers should go beyond the ivory tower and involve into the world. An organic unity of academic and personality is the precondition to ensure that university teachers acquire academic achievements; academic mission and service mission is not in contradiction; system construction should be strengthened to prevent academic personality dissimilation of university teachers under the utilitarianism guidance.
