Abstract:One key issue for a highly efficient travelling-wave thermoacoustic engine is the acoustic field characterized by near-travelling wave field and high acoustic impedance in the regenerator.A single-stage travelling-wave thermoacoustic prime mover has been designed,including a resistance tube to adjust the acoustic field.Systematic experiments on the onset characteristics and the steady state of the prime mover have been conducted with helium,N2 and CO2 as working fluids,respectively.The results show that the onset temperature of the prime mover can be lowered by more than 300℃ when the resistance tube was introduced into the loop.The lowest heating temperature to initiate the onset is only 55℃,when the working fluid is CO2 and the mean pressure is 2.35 MPa.Besides,the prime mover can be operated with a considerable pressure ratio when the heating temperature is below 200℃.Consequently,the resistance tube can be used as an effective phase adjustor for a looped thermoacoustic prime mover and the system proposed in this work shows a promising potential to utilize low-grade thermal energy.

Abstract:In this article, a compact magnetic dipole (MD) composite right-/left-handed transmission line (CRLH-TL) leaky-wave antenna (LWA) is proposed, which is periodically loaded with rectangular gaps and short stubs. Then, in light of the dielectric resonator with a high dielectric constant, low loss tangent, and good radiation performance, we further add an alumina ceramic block (ACB) to stack on the gap in each CRLH-TL LWA unit cell for forming the MD, and thus, wide beam-scanning range and compactness are achieved. To validate this design, a traditional uniform CRLH-TL LWA is investigated in detail. The results of S-parameters, electrical field distribution, and radiation properties illuminate the effects of introducing the ACB, such as impendence matching improvement and high radiation efficiency. Furthermore, to verify the flexible control of the balanced condition and the attenuation constant by changing the microstrip gap width and the ACB thickness predicted in the circuit model analysis, a nonuniform CRLH-TL LWA with quasi-constant amplitude is fabricated. Experimental results demonstrate a higher antenna gain and the stability of wide beam-scanning range under the condition of a compact design.

Abstract:Using microwave heating for biodiesel production has several advantages, including an accelerated reaction rate and improved product quality. However, large-scale microwave-assisted biodiesel production still suffers from low efficiency and uneven heating, which limit its industrial applicability. To address these issues, in this study, a reactor based on leaky waveguide is proposed for continuous microwave-assisted biodiesel production. Firstly, a radiator based on a leaky waveguide is designed to realize a uniform distribution of microwave energy along the axial and longitudinal directions. Then, a multi-physics model based on electromagnetism, heat transfer in fluids, chemical engineering, and laminar flow is developed to simulate the continuous microwave-assisted biodiesel production process. Compared to the traditional bottom-fed and cylinder-fed reactors, the leaky-waveguide reactor has the potential to improve the heating uniformity and energy efficiency, and the microwave energy utilization efficiency can more than 95 % and the value of the outlet COV can be reduced to 1.51 × 10 −3 . Experiments were carried out to validate the proposed model, and the experimental results are in good agreement with the simulated results. Finally, the effects of the pitch circle radius, radius, and number of turns (screw pitch) of the helical tube used for the microwave-assisted biodiesel production process were analyzed. The radius and number of turns (screw pitch) have a greater effect on the system than pitch circle radius. This continuous microwave-assisted biodiesel production reactor provides a possibility for large-scale industrial production and can also be widely applied to the chemical engineering with pressure continuous flow reactor and food industry.

The volume of the photonic microwave receiver can be greatly reduced by directly coupling a dielectric resonator antenna to the microdisk-based modulator. Abstract:A traveling-wave circular loop antenna with its phase distribution along the circle of l phi is demonstrated to generate the twisted radio wave. Theoretical formulations of its radiation fields are deduced in the cylindrical coordinate system and used to analyze its transmission characteristics, such as the radiation patterns, the evolution of the polarization states, and the angular momentum modes including the orbital angular momentum (OAM) modes and the spin angular momentum (SAM) modes. The prototype of a practical configuration for such antenna is proposed and conducted to validate the theoretical results. This theoretical analysis is applicable not only to radio waves but also to the whole electromagnetic spectrum.

Abstract:Proposed is an ultra-low-profile loop antenna backed by an electromagnetic bandgap (EBG) surface reflector, where the EBG surface can effectively exhibit the property of a perfect magnetic conductor (PMC) inside a deliberately designed bandwidth. It is shown that, assisted by the effective PMC bandwidth, while the proposed antenna is with a 0.07-lambda spacing between the loops and the EBG reflector, its axial ratio (AR) and voltage standing wave ratio (VSWR) performances are significantly improved. Experimental measurements show that the prototype antenna has a 3 dB AR bandwidth of 17% with an input VSWR less than 1.6. The proposed approach can find a wide range of low-profile circularly polarised (CP) antenna applications.
Miniature glass-metal coaxial waveguide reactors for microwave-assisted liquid heating

Abstract:Microwave (MW) irradiation is recognized as an effective tool in industries related to pharmaceuticals, chemistry, nanoparticle synthesis, food, etc. In the hardware field, some research efforts are concentrated on creating miniature reactors using low-cost technologies aimed at on-demand chemistry or parallel synthesis of many drugs. This paper reports on the development and characterization of novel miniature chemical-resistant glass-metal coaxial reactors based on a modified Liebig condenser. It is composed of two concentric glass tubes, one for the central conductor carrying MW current, and the other for the copper-foiled cylinder surrounding the first pipe. The gap between them is filled with a liquid that is pumped and evacuated by using shielded thin inlet/outlet glass tubes, which are melted and opened into this cylindrical cavity. The reactor's geometry allows for the direct soldering of miniature MW SMA coaxial connectors of 50-Ω impedance. The developed components are studied analytically, numerically and experimentally. The frequency properties of reactors are measured with a network analyzer. The temperature trends are explored by using a variable high-power MW generator, power meters and temperature sensors. These reactors demonstrate their relative insensitivity toward variations in the permittivity of filling liquids in the range of $3.75 < \varepsilon < 30$, as shown in simulations and measurements. They demonstrate the increase by two orders in the longitudinal modal penetration depth and a more homogeneous heating along reactors as compared to their hollow coaxial prototypes. These glass-metal miniature reactors can be used in on-demand continuous-flow accelerated liquid heating, chemistry and pharmacy.
Simulation and Design of New Microwae Plasma Source with Slotted Straight Waveguides

Abstract:Summary form only given. A new high efficiency and large volume microwave plasma source has been developed. The microwave plasma source consists of a 1-10 kW 2.45 GHz magnetron power supply, microwave transmission and monitoring system, microwave power splitter, adjustable short-circuit plunger and two parallel straight waveguide components with slots on its inner sides. Microwave electromagnetic energy is coupled from the parallel rectangular waveguides through regularly positioned slots into the plasma rectangular chamber of 460 mm in length, 64 mm in width and 118 mm in height, shaped by a quartz glass cube to enclose the space of work gas. The location and size and direction of slots and the distance between the two parallel metal waveguides were determined by the electromagnetic numerical simulation. The design parameters of the microwave plasma source were optimized to produce high-amplitude and uniform electromagnetic field distribution. The calculated fields distribution fit perfectly to those measured inside the plasma chamber without plasma. The stable microwave plasma of different gases (He, Ar) at atmospheric pressure is produced at low-power inside the entire quartz glass cube. The operational characteristics of microwave plasma source in different experimental condition is discussed. This microwave plasma source has a significant characteristic of the modular structure design, which facilitates the three-dimensional scale-up of the source by series-parallel connection. The potential industrial applications of this microwave plasma source are for material synthesis and sterilization.

Abstract:In this work, we propose a shielding diaphragm based on periodic metal loops to suppress the radio-frequency interference (RFI) in the microwave cavity. The electrically small size of the developed diaphragm enables its application in the miniaturized circuit/antenna systems. Furthermore, the proposed metallic structure can be integrated into the cavity, which makes it compatible with the high-power devices. This technique can address the RFI problems in the miniaturized and high-power systems, such as tracking, telemetry, and command (TT&C) systems and millimeter-wave terminal devices.

Abstract:Microwave continuous-flow heating has been proven to reduce the time of chemical reaction, increase the conversion rate, and improve product purity effectively. However, there are still problems such as relatively low heating efficiency, unideal heating homogeneity, and poor compactness, which brings further drawbacks like difficulty in fabrication and integration. In this study, a compact microwave continuous-flow heater based on six fractal antennas is proposed to address the problems above. First, a multi-physics simulation model is built, while heating efficiency and the volumetric coefficient of variance (COV) are improved through adjusting the geometric structure of this heater and the phase assignment of each radiator. Second, an experiment is conducted to verify the simulation model, which is consistent with the simulation. Third, a method of fast varying phases to achieve greater heating efficiency and heating homogeneity is adopted. The results show that the single-phase radiator improved efficiency by 31.1%, and COV was significantly optimized, reaching 64%. Furthermore, 0–100% ethanol–water solutions are processed by the heater, demonstrating its strong adaptability of vastly changing relative permittivity of liquid load. Moreover, an advance of this microwave continuous-flow heater is observed, compared with conventional multi-mode resonant cavity. Last, the performance of this microwave continuous-flow heater as the chemical reactor for biodiesel production is simulated. This design enables massive chemical production in fields like food industry and biodiesel production, with enhanced compactness, heating efficiency, and heating homogeneity.

Abstract:A periodic millimeter wave leaky-wave antenna (LWA), which has two different types of radiator elements that enable backward to forward radiation, is proposed. The unit-cell of the LWA consists of two quarter-wavelength microstrip lines and two corrugated substrate integrated waveguide (CSIW) cells with S-shaped quarter-wavelength open-circuit stubs. In addition to two parallel edge radiators, a single etched transverse slot with a tilt angle acts as an ancillary radiator, which ensures impedance matching in a large frequency range and achieves the backward to forward scanning. We analyze the proposed design through simulations, characterize a fabricated prototype, and find it to have good radiation properties including broad impedance bandwidth. The measurement results show a high peak gain from 11 to 15.8 dBi with a large scanning angle range from -34 degrees to +22 degrees in the K-band operating frequency range.

Abstract:A compact relativistic magnetron (RM) system with diffraction output is proposed, whose novelty lies in the omnidirectional radiation through the slotted waveguide array antenna. In the array antenna, a periodically slotted ridged circular waveguide is employed to obtain omnidirectional radiation and decrease its radius. Meanwhile, the RF field is directly coupling and radiating without complex mode conversion. Moreover, the interaction resonant system applies a ten-cavity rising-sun slow-wave structure to optimize the dispersion characteristics of the operating mode. The particle-in-cell simulations demonstrate that the RM could achieve 70% device efficiency and gigawatt radiation with an operating voltage of 400 kV. Besides, the output RF field is omnidirectional radiating with a gain up to 12.77 dBi at the operating frequency of 1.32 GHz, which is likely to be used in the high-power microwave area defense.

Abstract:This communication presents a method to make the EH0-mode microstrip leaky wave antenna (MLWA) radiate single beam in its transversal plane based on the differentially excited coupled microstrip line structure with low cross-polarization. The conventional EH0-mode MLWA is constructed by periodically loading a series of shorting pins along the center line of the uniform line, but it mainly radiates dual beams in its transversal plane. If a ground plane approaches to one of its edges with rotation of the whole structure, only one radiation aperture will be left to radiate single beam in the broadside direction. Herein, a planar differentially excited coupled line configuration is implemented to validate the proposed method and simultaneously inherits the original outstanding characteristic of freely designed narrow strip width. In design, a unified equivalent model is first established to provide insight into its radiation principle through propagation characteristics. Then, the dispersion and radiation properties are further investigated under mixed geometrical parameters. Finally, a prototype MLWA with transversal single-beam radiation is designed and fabricated with good agreement between the simulated and measured results, which validates the proposed method for designing a single-beam EH0 mode MLWA.

Planar Plasma of 30 cm Diameter Maintained by Hybrid Surface Microwave through Annular Slot Antenna

Abstract:Planar plasma of 30 cm diameter excited by microwave with an annular slot antenna is described. The annular slot antenna consists of two layers of dielectric plates with a filling of an aluminum foil. Its structure resembles a sandwich but the diameter of the aluminum foil is slightly less than that of a plate so as to form an annular slot at the margin of plates. The experimental results showed that the uniformity of plasma density in the radial direction has been improved. No plasma density jump was found when Ar gas pressure increased from 20 to 100Pa or microwave power increased from 200 to 800W. The working mechanism of the antenna used in our experiment has been analyzed with the experimental results.

Abstract:Continuous-flow microwave heating is widely used in chemical engineering and other fields. However, during microwave heating, the load’s electrical permittivity change will affect microwave heating efficiency. In this article, a WR430 asymmetric propagation waveguide is proposed based on gradient-index metasurfaces (GIMs), which can achieve high-efficiency continuous-flow heating with a large range of permittivity. First, asymmetric microwave propagation is realized in a WR430 3-D waveguide model, and the influence of metasurfaces index, thickness, and discrete element size is analyzed. Second, the asymmetric propagation waveguide is realized by fluted medium based on the permittivity equivalent method. The results show that the microwave inside the waveguide can only propagate along one direction at 2.4–2.6 GHz. Finally, the proposed waveguide is applied to a continuous-flow heating system. Compared with the single-mode cavity, multimode cavity, and waveguide water load, the proposed method can improve heating robustness and efficiency with different loads. Experiments show that the microwave absorption efficiency is stable and greater than 90% in the proposed system when the permittivity of the load changes drastically. The proposed system has a simple structure and strong applicability, which can replace the three-stub tuner and get rid of the circulator and water load for continuous-flow heating.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a three-dimensional split-loop resonator composed of a bended wire, a metallic ground slab, and a coaxial line loaded with a lumped matching resistor to mimic the input impedance of a rectifier. An ensemble of such resonators can function as an efficient energy harvester. The energy capture mechanism is explained by an equivalent circuit model. A 20 × 20 resonator array is fabricated to resonate around 2.45 GHz. The simulated and measured results indicate that the proposed resonator array has nearly unity energy conversion efficiency at the resonant frequency and is quite promising as an energy harvester in the microwave wireless power transmission system.

Case Studies in Thermal Engineering

Abstract:The demand for efficient and compact heating for dynamic dielectric liquid has grown significantly. Compared with traditional heating, microwave heating has the advantages of being fast and efficient. Moreover, the demand for outdoor portable heating and industrial compact heating is increasing. To address this limitation, this study proposes a compact heating system based on a metamaterial-based circular waveguide. First, asymmetric propagation theory is introduced, and an asymmetric propagation circular waveguide is designed in detail according to the discretisation of the relative permittivity. Then, a multi-physics model using a circular waveguide and a mug for high heating efficiency is developed by coupling Maxwell's equations and the heat transfer equation. Furthermore, heating experiments are performed for liquids with different relative permittivity and the experimental results consistently validated an efficiency rate of over 88 %, which agrees with the simulation results. Finally, the effects of the dielectric properties of the material and mug on the heating efficiency are discussed to highlight the robustness of the proposed heating system, with heating efficiency consistently maintained at 75 % or higher. In summary, the proposed design features a compact structure that is suitable for practical microwave heating applications.

Abstract:This article presents a novel leaky-wave antenna (LWA) based on a dielectric-filled rectangular waveguide (RWG) and fed by a higher order mode. The proposed quasi-uniform LWA has a compact configuration that is suitable for microwave applications, featuring the omnidirectional radiation patterns and low cross-polarization. In the frequency band of interest, the higher order mode, i.e., the TM11 mode, performs as a fast wave in the proposed quasi-uniform LWA, radiating via the transverse slots etched on the walls. The advantage of the TM11 mode for LWA applications is analyzed and demonstrated. This higher order mode is excited via a mode convertor from an inline coaxial line to the dielectric-filled RWG. For the reduction in sidelobe levels at high frequencies, −25 dB Taylor amplitude distribution is applied to the etched slots. The dielectric-filled LWA with the inline coaxial feeding is fabricated and measured. The measurement is consistent with the simulation, showing frequency-driven beam-scanning capability with low cross-polarization in the elevation plane. The simulated and measured radiation patterns in the azimuth plane illustrate the omnidirectional radiation patterns and thus confirm the radiating performance of the TM11 mode in the proposed LWA. The advantages of the scanned beams and omnidirectional radiations are promising for radar systems.

Abstract:A compact, high-efficiency leaky-wave antenna (LWA) is presented in this letter. Comprised by a novel periodic transmission line structure, the developed LWA could radiate its input power by a peak radiation efficiency of 93% with a compact size of 3.63λ<sub>L</sub> × 0.24λ<sub>L</sub>. Besides, the LWA exhibits good reflectionless performance characteristics from dc to 19 GHz. The equivalent circuit representations are utilized to reveal its operation mechanism. It is verified that the LWA operates as a slotted half-mode substrate integrated waveguide with high-efficiency leaky-wave radiation in the upper leaky band. Meanwhile, it could serve as a low-loss slow-wave transmission (SW-TL) line with spoof surface plasmon polariton structure in the lower band. For verification, an LWA prototype was fabricated and measured, which has experimentally confirmed its simulated radiation performances.
