Abstract:Spectral imaging can capture both spatial and spectral data of a scene, providing an efficient technique for analysis and identification. To improve the efficiency of data acquisition, compressive sensing (CS) methods have been introduced into spectral imaging systems. In this work, we propose a novel macropixel segmentation method to realize effective and non-mechanical single-pixel multispectral imaging. A series of macropixel-based patterns are designed to modulate data cube of target object. Spatial light modulator (SLM) and multispectral filter array are utilized to generate such patterns. CS algorithm is used to recover data cube from 1-D signal acquired by a single-pixel detector. Alignment of binary patterns with the subareas of macropixel filter array is conducted in the experimental set-up. Without mechanical or dispersive structure, the proposed method holds great potential in miniaturization and integration of spectral imaging devices.

Abstract:The single-pixel imaging (SPI) technique is able to capture two-dimensional (2D) images without conventional array sensors by using a photodiode. As a novel scheme, Fourier single-pixel imaging (FSI) has been proven capable of reconstructing high-quality images. Due to the fact that the Fourier basis patterns (also known as grayscale sinusoidal patterns) cannot be well displayed on the digital micromirror device (DMD), a fast FSI system is proposed to solve this problem by binarizing Fourier pattern through a dithering algorithm. However, the traditional dithering algorithm leads to low quality as the extra noise is inevitably induced in the reconstructed images. In this paper, we report a better dithering algorithm to binarize Fourier pattern, which utilizes the Sierra-Lite kernel function by a serpentine scanning method. Numerical simulation and experiment demonstrate that the proposed algorithm is able to achieve higher quality under different sampling ratios.

Abstract:Abstract Fourier single-pixel imaging has been widely concerned with its real-time and high quality. However, DMD (Digital Micromirror Array) as an illumination source cannot produce a continuous gray level of the Fourier basis pattern. Therefore, the inevitable error is produced. This paper proposes a halftone technique based on edge attenuation, which can be applied to the Fourier basis pattern generation method on DMD without loss of resolution, and compared with the traditional methods, the invention solves the problem that the traditional methods has a single scanning direction and accumulated errors, finally; we improve the image quality.

Abstract:It remains a tough task for designing a microscopy system to approach the diffraction limit over a wide field of view due to its restricted space bandwidth product (SBP). Fourier ptychographic microscopy (FPM) has been developed to broaden the SBP of a conventional microscope platform without major hardware modifications. In this paper, we propose a novel FPM system based on the phase-coded speckle illumination, termed PSI-FPM, which employs a laser source with a speckle illumination control optical system. A phase-only spatial light modulator (SLM) with a condenser lens is utilized in the PSI-FPM system to project the phase-coded speckle illumination patterns onto the sample. The convolution between the sample spectrum and the illumination spectrum in the Fourier domain extend the numerical aperture of the objective that acts as a low-pass filter with cut-off frequency. The SLM is introduced in the PSI-FPM system to produce the specific illumination patterns so that the number of the captured images used for reconstruction are greatly reduced. In addition, the generated pattern is scanned to different directions without mechanical movement, which improves the robustness of the system. The PSI-FPM system is validated against simulations and experiments, and as a result reconstructs high-resolution images once the phase retrieval algorithm is employed. We envision that the PSI-FPM system will be suitable for many other speckle imaging applications.

Abstract:In this letter a single-pixel imaging structure is proposed based on compressive sensing using a spatial light modulator (SLM)-based spectrum shaper. In the approach, an SLM-based spectrum shaper, the pattern of which is a predetermined pseudorandom bit sequence (PRBS), spectrally codes the optical pulse carrying image information. The energy of the spectrally mixed pulse is detected by a single-pixel photodiode and the measurement results are used to reconstruct the image via a sparse recovery algorithm. As the mixing of the image signal and the PRBS is performed in the spectral domain, optical pulse stretching, modulation, compression and synchronization in the time domain are avoided. Experiments are implemented to verify the feasibility of the approach.

Abstract:Hyperspectral imaging that obtains the spatial-spectral information of a scene has been extensively applied in various fields but usually requires a complex and costly system. A single-pixel detector based hyperspectral system mitigates the complexity problem but simultaneously brings new difficulties on the spectral dispersion device. In this work, we propose a low-cost compressive single-pixel hyperspectral imaging system with RGB sensors. Based on the structured illumination single-pixel imaging configuration, the lens-free system directly captures data by the RGB sensors without dispersion in the spectral dimension. The reconstruction is performed with a pre-trained spatial-spectral dictionary, and the hyperspectral images are obtained through compressive sensing. In addition, the spatial patterns for the structured illumination and the dictionary for the sparse representation are optimized by coherence minimization, which further improve the reconstruction quality. In both spatial and spectral dimensions, the intrinsic sparse properties of the hyperspectral images are made full use of for high sampling efficiency and low reconstruction cost. This work may introduce opportunities for optimization of computational imaging systems and reconstruction algorithms towards high speed, high resolution, and low cost future.

Abstract:Fourier single-pixel imaging (FSI) has been proven capable of acquiring excellent image quality when is sampled the fully information in Fourier domain. However, when the sampling measurements is limited, image reconstruction by applying inverse Fourier transform algorithm would result in the severe ringing effect and the loss of image details. In this report, we propose a new algorithm for FSI reconstruction based on compressed sensing theory, which utilizes joint discrete gradient and non-local self-similarity priors, thus substantially using the prior knowledge of natural images in reconstruction process. Both the results of computational simulations and experiments demonstrate the efficacy of the proposed algorithm.

Abstract:Wave-front coding is a well known technique used to extend the depth of field of incoherent imaging system. The core of this technique lies in the design of suitable phase masks, among which the most important one is the cubic phase mask suggested by Dowski and Cathey (1995) [1]. In this paper, we propose a new type called cubic sinusoidal phase mask which is generated by combing the cubic one and another component having the sinusoidal form. Numerical evaluations and real experimental results demonstrate that the composite phase mask is superior to the original cubic phase mask with parameters optimized and provides another choice to achieve the goal of depth extension. Abstract:Single pixel imaging (SPI) is a novel technique capturing 2D images using a bucket detector with a high signal-to-noise ratio, wide spectrum range and low cost. Conventional SPI projects random illumination patterns to randomly and uniformly sample the entire scene's information. Determined by Nyquist sampling theory, SPI needs either numerous projections or high computation cost to reconstruct the target scene, especially for high-resolution cases. To address this issue, we propose an efficient single pixel imaging technique (eSPI), which instead projects sinusoidal patterns for importance sampling of the target scene's spatial spectrum in Fourier space. Specifically, utilizing the centrosymmetric conjugation and sparsity priors of natural images' spatial spectra, eSPI sequentially projects two pi/2-phase-shifted sinusoidal patterns to obtain each Fourier coefficient in the most informative spatial frequency bands. eSPI can reduce requisite patterns by two orders of magnitude compared to conventional SPI, which helps a lot for fast and high-resolution SPI.

Abstract:The traditional Fourier single-pixel imaging (FSI) utilizes cosinusoidal (grayscale) illumination patterns to reconstruct the image of an object. In this paper, we propose a universal mechanism in which FSI can be implemented via arbitrary periodic structured illumination not merely cosinusoidal illumination patterns. The proposed theory is verified by numerical simulations and optical experiments. In the experiment, we demonstrate the result of FSI with phase-shifting sawtooth (trapezoid, square) structured illumination modulated by a light projector. Moreover, in order to underline the high efficiency of the proposed mechanism, we perform FSI utilizing binary (square) illumination patterns generated directly by the digital micromirror devices (DMDs). Abstract:In this study, we propose an edge detection scheme based on Fourier single-pixel imaging, which extracts edges directly from the Fourier spectrum of the target object. The numerical simulations and experimental results show that the edges extracted by the proposed scheme have a better signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) than those extracted by the phase-shift sinusoidal pattern scheme. Furthermore, we investigate the effect of edge extraction in the case of undersampling and propose a plug-and-play edge detection algorithm to enhance the image. Our work combines Fourier single-pixel imaging with edge detection to extract the edges of a target object without imaging, providing a new idea for edge detection techniques.

Abstract:Single-pixel cameras based on the concepts of compressed sensing (CS) leverage the inherent structure of images to retrieve them with far fewer measurements and operate efficiently over a significantly broader spectral range than conventional silicon-based cameras. Recently, photonic time-stretch (PTS) technique facilitates the emergence of high-speed single-pixel cameras. A significant breakthrough in imaging speed of single-pixel cameras enables observation of fast dynamic phenomena. However, according to CS theory, image reconstruction is an iterative process that consumes enormous amounts of computational time and cannot be performed in real time. To address this challenge, we propose a novel single-pixel imaging technique that can produce high-quality images through rapid acquisition of their effective spatial Fourier spectrum. We employ phase-shifting sinusoidal structured illumination instead of random illumination for spectrum acquisition and apply inverse Fourier transform to the obtained spectrum for image restoration. We evaluate the performance of our prototype system by recognizing quick response (QR) codes and flow cytometric screening of cells. A frame rate of 625 kHz and a compression ratio of 10 recognition rate of the QR code. An imaging flow cytometer enabling high-content screening with an unprecedented throughput of 100,000 cells/s is also demonstrated. For real-time imaging applications, the proposed single-pixel microscope can significantly reduce the time required for image reconstruction by two orders of magnitude, which can be widely applied in industrial quality control and label-free biomedical imaging.

Abstract:Abstract We propose a method of complex-amplitude Fourier single-pixel imaging (CFSI) with coherent structured illumination to acquire both the amplitude and phase of an object. In the proposed method, an object is illustrated by a series of coherent structured light fields which are generated by a phase-only spatial light modulator, the complex Fourier spectrum of the object can be acquired sequentially by a single-pixel photodetector. Then the desired complex-amplitude image can be retrieved directly by applying an inverse Fourier transform. We experimentally implemented this CFSI with several different types of objects. The experimental results show that the proposed method provides a promising complex-amplitude imaging approach with high quality and a stable configuration. Thus, it might find broad applications in optical metrology and biomedical science.

Abstract:Single-pixel imaging (SPI), which is generally based on computational imaging, has the advantages of a wide bandwidth and the ability to image objects beyond the visual field. However, the major challenge in developing SPI is the large number of illumination patterns that are required. Unlike traditional SPI that relies on random measurement patterns, the SPI method proposed in this letter involves a two-step phase shift that reduces greatly the required number of illumination patterns. Theoretical analysis shows that 6724 illumination patterns are required to reconstruct a 128 × 128-pixel image whose peak signal-to-noise ratio exceeds 30, and these can be projected in 0.3362 s with a digital micromirror device working at full speed. Compared to SPI with a four-step phase shift, half the number of illumination patterns are required. Verification experiments show that the reconstructed images can be obtained even at a sampling ratio of 20%. The proposed SPI with a two-step phase shift is an effective means of requiring fewer illumination patterns and has great potential in dynamic detection.

Abstract:Fourier single-pixel imaging (FSI) is a branch of single-pixel imaging techniques. It allows any image to be reconstructed by acquiring its Fourier spectrum by using a single-pixel detector. FSI uses Fourier basis patterns for structured illumination or structured detection to acquire the Fourier spectrum of image. However, the spatial resolution of the reconstructed image mainly depends on the number of Fourier coefficients sampled. The reconstruction of a high-resolution image typically requires a number of Fourier coefficients to be sampled. Consequently, a large number of single-pixel measurements lead to a long data acquisition time, resulting in imaging of a dynamic scene challenging. Here we propose a new sampling strategy for FSI. It allows FSI to reconstruct a clear and sharp image with a reduced number of measurements. The key to the proposed sampling strategy is to perform a density-varying sampling in the Fourier space and, more importantly, the density with respect to the importance of Fourier coefficients is subject to a one-dimensional Gaussian function. The final image is reconstructed from the undersampled Fourier spectrum through compressive sensing. We experimentally demonstrate the proposed method is able to reconstruct a sharp and clear image of 256 × 256 pixels with a sampling ratio of 10%. The proposed method enables fast single-pixel imaging and provides a new approach for efficient spatial information acquisition.

Abstract:A single-pixel detector based hyperspectral system provides an effective way to obtain the spatial-spectral information of target scenes. However, complex spectral dispersion and the substantial number of measurements not only increase the complexity of the system but also decrease the sampling efficiency and the reconstruction accuracy. In this paper, we propose a compressive sensing (CS) theory based single-pixel hyperspectral imaging system. Based on structured illumination, the spatial information is modulated by binary spatial patterns displayed on a liquid crystal on silicon (LCoS), while polarizing elements at specific angles, acting as a serious of filters, modulate the spectral dimension, effectively avoiding spectral dispersion. In terms of sampling efficiency, the application of CS significantly decreases the number of measurements required compared to the Nyquist-Shannon sampling theorem. Besides, to improve the reconstruction accuracy, mutual coherence minimization is employed to optimize the pre-trained dictionary, spatial patterns and filters. Furthermore, a two-step encoding method based on macro-pixel segmentation is proposed to address the issue of low resolution constrained by the size of the dictionary. Compared to the unoptimized system and dictionary, the proposed method achieves more accurate reconstruction results in both spectral and spatial dimensions. This work may provide opportunities for high-resolution single-pixel hyperspectral imaging systems based on CS. Abstract:Traditional imaging technology is basically a “what you see is what you get” imaging method, providing images that resemble human vision for post-information acquisition and interpretation. This Letter proposes a feature single-pixel imaging technique that allows for direct imaging of specific features without the need for traditional image processing methods. This approach enables the imaging of a single feature at a remarkable ultra-low sampling ratio of 2% with a resolution of up to 128 × 128 pixels, operating at a frequency of 67 Hz, even in dynamic environments where the location of the target or background features may change. Additionally, the proposed method demonstrates the ability to selectively image defects on an integrated circuit wafer. This research offers a significant advancement in the development of single-pixel imaging for feature information acquisition and has immense potential for applications in various industries and daily life scenarios.
Quantitative imaging for complex-objects via a single-pixel detector

Abstract:Quantitative phase imaging (QPI) is important in many applications such as microscopy and crystallography. To quantitatively reveal phase information, people could either employ interference to map phase distribution into intensity fringes, or analyze intensity-only diffraction patterns through phase retrieval algorithms. Traditionally, both of these two ways use pixelated detectors. In this work, a novel QPI scheme is reported inspired by single-pixel camera (SPC), which adopts the principle of SPC that retrieves images through structured illumination and corresponding single-pixel signals. Particularly for complex-valued imaging, the structured illumination is performed in the phase domain, and a point detector with restricted sensor size detects the intensity of zero-frequency area. Based on the illumination structures and point signals, a complex image is reconstructed by running a phase retrieval algorithm. This approach is universal for various wavelengths, and needs no a priori information of the targets. Both simulation and experiment show that our single-pixel QPI scheme exhibits great performance even with objects in an extremely rough phase distribution.

Full-Color Computational Imaging with Single-Pixel Detectors Based on a 2D Discrete Cosine Transform

Abstract:We propose and demonstrate a computational imaging technique that uses structured illumination based on a two-dimensional discrete cosine transform to perform imaging with a single-pixel detector. A scene is illuminated by a projector with two sets of orthogonal patterns, then by applying an inverse cosine transform to the spectra obtained from the single-pixel detector a full-color image is retrieved. This technique can retrieve an image from sub-Nyquist measurements, and the background noise is easily canceled to give excellent image quality. Moreover, the experimental setup is very simple.

Abstract:Structured-light three-dimensional (3D) imaging can achieve 3D shape of a stationary object via one or more pixelated array cameras with phase-shifting illumination. In order to extend 3D imaging to moving scenarios, we propose a 3D imaging method with double projection of a single-frame modulated light pattern and a sampling pattern. It can continuously image the moving 3D scene by making multi-pixel detector axial flat brush scan along the motion axis. Utilizing spatial multiplexing for multiple single-pixel imaging, each single-pixel does not need to keep staring at some part of the object, avoiding motion blur problem. The performance of our method has been demonstrated by numerical simulations. Given this, we believe that the technique paves the way to practical applications including product line 3D monitoring.
