Abstract:Highly ordered mesoporous MnFe2O4 was fabricated via the nanocasting strategy and innovatively used to activate peroxymonosulfate for the degradation of Orange II in water. The effects of several key parameters including catalyst dosage, peroxymonosulfate concentration, temperature and initial pH on the degradation performance were investigated. Results showed that the catalytic activity of ordered mesoporous MnFe2O4 was far superior than that of spinel MnFe2O4, which can be attributed to its unique structural characteristics. Data fitting showed that the Orange II degradation could be described by the pseudo-first-order kinetics under all conditions tested in this study. Ordered mesoporous MnFe2O4 presented stable and excellent catalytic activity in wide pH range of 5-9. Both the increase of catalyst dosage and temperature favored the enhancement in catalytic efficiency. However, the Orange II degradation tended to have a decline trend after an initial ascent as the peroxymonosulfate concentration increased. Moreover, ordered mesoporous MnFe2O4 was reusable over five consecutive cycles and negligible leaching of metal ions was observed during catalytic reaction. The balance among Mn2+/Mn3+, Fe2+/Fe3+ and peroxymonosulfate decomposed in solution was considered as the proposed activation mechanism, and the generation of sulfate radicals played the dominant role in the Orange II degradation. Activation of K2S2O8 by Ni-Ce composite oxides for the degradation of orange II with visible light assistance

Abstract:NiO and CeO2 composite metal oxides (NiO-CeO2) were synthesized by sol-gel method to investigate a degradation system by persulfate (PS) activation with the assistance of visible light (Vis). The phase composition of NiO-CeO2 was detected by X-ray diffraction (XRD), the morphology of NiO-CeO2 was characterized by scanning electron microscope (SEM), and the result of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) proved the element composition and valence state of the NiO-CeO2. In the Vis/PS/NiO-CeO2 system, the degradation rate of Orange II using a concentration of 50 mg/L was as high as 90% in 15 min but it increased to as high as 99% in 60 min. Mechanism studies have shown that the combination of NiO and CeO2 generated more oxygen vacancies, and activated persulfate to generate active oxygen species. Moreover, the effects of visible light, persulfate concentration and pH were evaluated, and the results showed that the participation of visible light and persulfate could significantly increase the degradation efficiency of Orange II, but pH had little effect on the degradation. Quenching experiments and detection by ESR showed that O-2(-), center dot SO4-, center dot OH, and O-1(2) all contribute to the removal of Orange II. In addition, the recovery and reuse properties of NiO-CeO2 may lead to sustainable treatment of wastewater.
Persulfate Activation over CoFe2O4/CuS for Degradation of Orange II under Visible Light

Abstract:A magnetic porous composite catalyst has been synthesized from CoFe2O4 and CuS. Its degradation performance towards organic pollutants in a heterogeneous photocatalytic system has been compared with those of the in-dividual photocatalysts and those of individual chemocatalysis systems. Orange II served as a target contaminant. Persulfate and catalyst were combined under visible light conditions to achieve degradation of the organic pollutant, whereupon the degradation efficiency reached up to 97 %. The catalyst has been characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) analysis, Mott-Schottky analysis, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and solid-state UV/Vis spectrophotometry. The influences of pH and different catalyst and persulfate loadings in the system have been studied. The results of quenching experiments showed non-radical degradation to be a major pathway, with singlet molecular oxygen (1O2) and photogenerated holes (h+) as the critical reactive species. Besides, the magnetic properties of the catalyst are conducive to its recycling, and it still showed high degradation efficiency after three cycles.
Efficient Degradation of Orange II by Core Shell CoFe2O4-CeO2 Nanocomposite with the Synergistic Effect from Sodium Persulfate.

Abstract:Novel core shell CoFe2O4-CeO2 (CoFe-Ce) nanocomposite was synthesized and investigated as an efficient photocatalyst to activate sodium persulfate (Na2S2O8, PS) for orange II (OII) degradation. The CoFe-Ce nano composite was successfully designed and synthesized by a facile hydrothermal reaction followed by calcination and characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), ultraviolet-visible diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (UV-Vis DRS), and vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM). Compared with pure CoFe2O4 and CeO2, the photocatalytic efficiency of CoFe-Ce nanocomposite was significantly improved. Under the irradiation of visible light, the catalytic degradation efficiency of orange II could reach to 98.5% within 60 min. Additionally, the as-prepared material could be recycled for at least five times using magnetic separation ability of the nanocomposite, and during the cycling the dye degradation rate was almost unchanged. The active species produced during the degradation were studied by classical quenching experiments, and the different types of free radicals produced in the system were further confirmed by electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy. This novel nanocomposite is ex- pected to have potential application for degradation of organic pollutants in wastewater by utilizing solar energy.

Abstract:Fe2O3@CeO2 nanocomposites were synthesized by water bath heating method to activate NaHSO3 for Orange II dye (50 mg L-1) degradation, which reached up to 98.2% within 120 min. The Fe2O3@CeO2 and NaHSO3 dosages and the molar ratios of Ce and Fe in Fe2O3@CeO2 were investigated to obtain the optimum conditions as follows: 0.02 g Fe2O@CeO2, 0.1 g NaHSO3 and the molar ratio of Ce and Fe was 5:2 (designated as Ce-Fe-1, or simply Fe2O3@CeO2). In addition, Fe2O3@CeO2 catalyst displayed superior catalytic performance to those materials that were previously reported, as verified by the good stability (reached 90.9% after three cycles) and high degradation rate of Orange II (98.2%) of the currently developed material. Existence of center dot SO4- and center dot OH radicals were verified by Electron Spin Resonance Spectroscopy during degradation, and these radicals are proposed to have high degradation efficiency of Orange II. On the basis of the detected radicals, a possible degradation mechanism was proposed to provide more choices for the application of sulfite in advanced oxidation processes (AOPs).
Heterogeneous Activation of Persulfate by Bi2MoO6–CuS Composite for Efficient Degradation of Orange II under Visible Light

Abstract:Here in, a special catalytic system of potassium persulfate (K2S2O8, PS) activated by Bi2MoO6-CuS composite was established for the orange II (OII) degradation under visible light. The Bi2MoO6-CuS composite was synthesized by a two-step hydrothermal and solvothermal methods. The structure, morphology, light absorption and photocatalytic properties of the composite were respectively characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), UV-visible diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (UV-vis DRS). The removal efficiency of OII degradation in the Bi2MoO6-CuS/PS/vis system reached to 98% within 80 min, which was much higher than that of either Bi2MoO6 or CuS alone. A feasible mechanism analysis of OII degradation was proposed and validated by simple classical quenching experiments and electron spin resonance (ESR) spectroscopy. The high removal efficiency by the nanocomposite could be attributed to highly active species of O-2(center dot-), center dot & nbsp;OH and SO4 center dot - radicals in the Bi2MoO6-CuS photocatalytic oxidation system. Moreover, the composite material retained its activation performance even after 5 degradation cycles, which suggested its high stability.

Abstract:MnCuS nanocomposites were prepared by one-pot simple hydrothermal method, the crystallinity and morphology were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Transmission Electron Microscope (TEM), and Brunauer, Emmett and Teller (BET) respectively. Then, the materials were then used to activate persulfate (Na2S2O8) in Orange II degradation. The degradation efficiency of MnCuS with Mn:Cu mole ratio of 1:1 reached 98.2% within 120 min under visible light, which have higher efficiency than other mole ratios of samples or pure MnS and CuS, Furthermore, the nanocomposites also showed good recycling stability performance, and the degradation efficiency could still reach 97.1% even after three degradation cycles. The mechanism of activating Na2S2O8 by MnCuS is proposed as follows: the cycling of active sites of Cu(I)/Cu(II) and Mn(II)/Mn(III) catalyzed Na2S2O8 to produce sulfate radicals (SO4 center dot-), which improved the catalytic degradation ability of MnCuS/Na2S2O8/visible light system.
In situ reduction for synthesis of nano-sized Cu2O particles on MgCuAl-LDH layers for degradation of orange II under visible light

Abstract:Cu2O-MgAl-LDH composites were synthesized from MgCuAl-layered double hydroxides (LDHs) as precursors using ascorbic acid for reduction of Cu2+. The synthesized precursor materials and composites were characterized by XRD, TEM, XRF, XPS and UV–vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy. The results showed that the Cu2O nanoparticles were evenly distributed on the LDH nano-sheets, which greatly improved the catalytic property of Cu2O. For example, the Cu2O-Mg7Al5-LDH composite removed about 90% of Orange II while pure Cu2O removed only about 70% of the dye through photocatalytic degradation. The Cu2O-LDH composites showed very high efficiency in degrading Orange II dye because of uniform distribution of Cu2O nanoparticles on the surfaces of LDH with less amount of copper than in pure Cu2O. The Cu2O-LDH composites developed here are potential photocatalysts for dye degradation in water purification.

Abstract:Fe@Fe2O3 core shell nanomaterials with different Fe2O3 shell thickness were synthesized and the Fe@Fe2O3/NaHSO3 Fenton-like system was used for the decomposition of Orange II. The consequences are compared with traditional Fenton Fe@Fe2O3/H2O2 system. The Fe@Fe2O3/NaHSO3 system showed extremely good applicability under both strongly acidic and alkaline conditions. The new Fe@Fe2O3-(2)/NaHSO3 system led to more than 99% degradation in 30 s when the pH was 3, which indicated that the Fe@Fe2O3 material was not corroded during the process even under strongly acidic condition. The above Fe@Fe2O3-(2) material was prepared from nano-zero-valent iron aged in solution for 2 h to synthesize the Fe2O3 shell. The reaction mechanism of Fe@Fe2O3/NaHSO3 Fenton-like system was also concluded. The oxidation efficiency was highly improved due to rapid electron transfer between Fe core and Fe2O3 shell, which promoted the direct recycling of ≡Fe3+ and ≡Fe2+ and thus accelerated the generation of SO4- and OH radicals.
Improved degradation of Orange II by Fe3O4/NiO/NaHSO3 system under visible light irradiation

Abstract:Fe3O4/NiO composite oxides have been synthesised and characterised by various analytical techniques. Fe3O4/NiO was used as the catalyst to activate NaHSO3, and supplemented with visible light illumination, which formed a novel photo-assisted Fenton-like system in degradation of dye in wastewater. By changing the calcination time of the precursor, three composite oxides are obtained. In degradation of the azo dye Orange II, several experimental results show that Fe3O4/NiO(8h) has the best adsorption and catalytic ability, 90% of the dye can be removed within 2 h in the Fe3O4/NiO(8h)/NaHSO3 system. Also the mechanism of the degradation is discussed.

Abstract:A new Fenton-like catalysis system consisting of Fe2O3 and NaHSO3 was designed, tested and established as a catalyst for the degradation of Orange II dye. The results of the degradation showed that the treatment efficiency was considerable under different conditions but with a significant increase under alkaline or strongly alkaline conditions compared to that under the acidic condition. A color removal efficiency of more than 90% was obtained after 20 min and 30 min of treatment when the pH was adjusted to 8 and 10, respectively. The catalytic ability and the applicability of the system under strongly alkaline or acid conditions were investigated. The effective degradation of dyes with various factors was explored under extreme conditions. A potential mechanism of Orange II degradation by the Fe2O3/NaHSO3 system was proposed and verified with the experimental results. The range of pH values for Fenton-like oxidation was extended and the leaching of iron from the synthesized Fe2O3 after degradation was found to be negligible and therefore, can overcome the shortcoming of traditional Fenton reaction in a wide pH range as this Fenton-like system could be used on all kinds of wastewater treatment.
Bimetallic Fe/Ti‐Based Metal–Organic Framework for Persulfate‐Assisted Visible Light Photocatalytic Degradation of Orange II

Abstract:Amine-functionalized bimetallic Fe/Ti-based metal-organic frameworks (Fe/Ti-MOF-NH2) were synthesized via the solvo-thermal method and used as photocatalysts and activators for persulfate (PS)-assisted visible light photocatalytic degradation of Orange II. Nearly 100% of Orange II was removed within 10 min in the Fe/Ti-MOF-NH2(3:1)/PS/Vis process, while only 10.7% and 70.9% of Orange II were removed in Fe/Ti-MOF-NH2(3:1)/Vis and Fe/Ti-MOF-NH2(3:1)/PS processes within 10 min, respectively. Therefore, the synergistic effect of PS activation and visible light photocatalysis was demonstrated by the Fe/TiMOF-NH2(3:1) composite. The enhanced photocatalytic activity of the photocatalyst can be attributed to the efficient electrons transfer by Fe3+/Fe2+ and Ti4+/Ti3+ redox cycles, activation of PS by photogenerated electrons to produce sulfate radicals (SO4 center dot-), and increased formation of hydroxyl radicals ((OH)-O-center dot). Concurrently, the Fe/Ti-MOF-NH2(3:1) photocatalyst also exhibited good reusability and stability in the photocatalytic reaction system.
Spinel-type Cobalt-Manganese Oxide Catalyst for Degradation of Orange II Using a Novel Heterogeneous Photo-Chemical Catalysis System

Abstract:A spinel-type Co-Mn oxide was designed and synthesized through a two-step oxidation-precipitation method at modest temperatures. The Co-Mn oxide was applied as the catalyst in the presence of NaHSO3 under visible light irradiation in order to establish the superiority of heterogeneous photo-chemical catalysis system. In the above system, the Co-Mn catalyst exhibited much better catalytic capability than that in either single photocatalysis or chemocatalysis system, implying that the Co-Mn catalyst could well combine photocatalysis and chemocatalysis to obtain the highest degradation efficiency of up to 94% within 40 min when using Orange II as the target pollutant. Recycling experiments results showed that the as-obtained catalyst has excellent stability and recyclability. Powder X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis showed that the as-obtained Co-Mn catalyst had a cubic MnCo2O4.5 spinel structure. Because of relatively low temperature (180 degrees C) synthesis, the catalyst was formed with nanoparticles (25-65 nm) and high specific surface area as confirmed by SEM and BET analyses. XPS indicated the presence of both manganese and cobalt species that serve as reactive sites for the catalytic oxidation reactions. Rational degradation mechanisms responsible for superior catalytic activity and durability were proposed based on a series of experimental results. The active species such as Mn(III), holes and sulfate and hydroxyl radicals were proposed to be responsible for the outstanding degradation results.
Photodegradation of Orange Ii Using Waste Paper Sludge-Derived Heterogeneous Catalyst in the Presence of Oxalate under Ultraviolet Light Emitting Diode Irradiation

Abstract:A waste paper sludge-derived heterogeneous catalyst (WPS-Fe-350) was synthesized via a facile method and successfully applied for the degradation of Orange II in the presence of oxalic acid under the illumination of ultraviolet light emitting diode (UV-LED) Powder X-ray diffraction, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electronic microscopy and N2 sorption isotherm analysis indicated the formation of α-Fe2O3 in the mesoporous nanocomposite. The degradation test showed that WPS-Fe-350 exhibited rapid Orange II (OII) degradation and mineralization in the presence of oxalic acid under the illumination of UV-LED. The effects of pH, oxalic acid concentration and dosage of the catalyst on the degradation of OII were evaluated, respectively. Under the optimal conditions (1g/L catalyst dosage, 2mmol/L oxalic acid and pH3.0), the degradation percentage for a solution containing 30mg/L OII reached 83.4% under illumination by UV-LED for 80min. Moreover, five cyclic tests for OII degradation suggested that WPS-Fe-350 exhibited excellent stability of catalytic activity. Hence, this study provides an alternative environmentally friendly way to reuse waste paper sludge and an effective and economically viable method for degradation of azo dyes and other refractory organic pollutants in water.
Visible-light-driven activation of sodium persulfate for accelerating orange II degradation using ZnMn2O4 photocatalyst

Abstract:A special catalytic system was obtained by using ZnMn2O4 (ZMO) materials to activate Na2S2O8 and catalytically degrade organic dye orange II under visible light irradiation. The ZMO nanoparticles were prepared by a simple one-step method and characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) and ultravioletevisible diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (UVeVis DRS). In this study, the ZMO/Na2S2O8 system was used to degrade orange II, and the degradation rate reached 97.44% in 60 min. ZMO catalysts could be recycled for at least five times, and its degradation rate was only decreased by 1.84%. The free radicals produced during the degradation of orange II were studied by classical quenching experiments, and the different types of free radicals produced in the system were further confirmed by electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy. Magnetic core-shell CuFe2O4@C3N4 hybrids for visible light photocatalysis of Orange II

Abstract:Novel CuFe2O4@C3N4 core-shell photocatalysts were fabricated through a self-assembly method and characterized by X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy and Uv-vis diffuse reflection spectroscopy. The photocatalytic performances of the CuFe2O4@C3N4 catalysts were evaluated in photo Fenton-like discoloration of Orange II dye using H2O2 as an oxidant under visible-light irradiation (λ>420 nm). It was found the CuFe2O4@C3N4 hybrid (mass ratio of CuFe2O4/g-C3N4 at 2:1) exhibits a superior activity as compared with single component of CuFe2O4 or g-C3N4 and the mixture of g-C3N4 and CuFe2O4, due to the elevation of the separation efficiency of photoinduced electron-hole pairs, resulted from the heterojunction between the interfaces of g-C3N4 and CuFe2O4. The quenching tests of different scavengers displayed that O2(•-), OH and h(+) are responsible for the Orange II decolorization. In addition, the effects of initial concentration of the dye contaminant (0.014-0.140 mM), different anions (Cl(-), SO4(2-), NO3(-), CH3COO(-) and HCO3(-)) and temperature (15-65 °C) in photoreaction were also investigated. The CuFe2O4@C3N4 sample exhibited stable performance without obvious loss of catalytic activity after five successive runs, showing a promising application for the photo-oxidative degradation of environmental contaminants.

The role of some significant parameters on the degradation of Orange Ⅱ in the two systems were studied separately and compared. The concentration of either BS or H2O2 led to a significant effect on the degradation of Orange Ⅱ. In addition, BS/Fe–Co-SBA/Vis system was found to be suitable for a wider pH range of 3–9. However, we found that the initial pH of solution during the reaction had a great influence on the degradation of Orange II in the H2O2/Fe–Co-SBA/Vis system. The main free radicals involved in the degradation of Orange II in the BS/Fe–Co-SBA/Vis system were ·OH and SO4·- while they were mainly ·OH radicals in the H2O2/Fe–Co-SBA/Vis system as determined by electron spin-resonance (ESR) spectroscopy. Photocatalytic dye degradation mechanisms were proposed for both the systems based on the generation of different radicals in each system.

Abstract:Copper sulfide (CuS) nanoparticles were prepared at 140 °C by a simple hydrothermal method and characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Brunauer, Emmett, Teller (BET) specific surface area method. Orange II (60 mg/L) was used as the target pollutant to investigate the degradation performance of CuS and K2S2O8 under visible light irradiation. The degradation efficiency reached 98.88% in CuS/K2S2O8/visible light system within 120 min, which showed very strong activity. Moreover, the catalyst also showed good stability and recycling performance for degrading Orange II. After three consecutive degradation cycles, the degradation efficiency of Orange II was found to be not less than 98%. The dye degradation mechanism was proposed as follows: Cu2+/Cu+ cycling catalyzed K2S2O8 to produce free radicals (SO4 −), which significantly improved the oxidation ability of CuS/K2S2O8/visible light system.

Abstract:Cu2O/ZnO nanocomposites were synthesized by a coprecipitation method and were applied to degrade dye wastewater. The prepared nanocomposites were characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, high resolution transmission electron microscopy and UV–vis diffuse reflectance spectra. The effects of initial Orange II (OII) dye concentration, pH and dosage of catalyst amount were investigated in the decomposition of OII dye by the nanocomposites. The best conditions for the dye decomposition by Cu2O/ZnO nanocomposites were found to be in the neutral solution when the dosage of catalyst was 200mg/L with an OII concentration of 50mg/L at room temperature. Under the above conditions, nearly 80% decolorization efficiency of OII was achieved by Cu2O/ZnO nanocomposites within 2h of reaction time and this efficiency was much higher than that of either pure Cu2O or ZnO.

Abstract:Based on the characteristics of persulfate (PS) activation that can quickly and effectively remove organic pollutants in water, a new catalytic material of carbon nitride supported Fe-Co diatom (FeCo@N-C) was prepared for PS activation to degrade orange II (OII). The XRD pattern showed that eight characteristic diffraction peaks, including CoFe 2O 4 diffraction absorption peaks. The FT-IR inferred that C-N/C=N, C=O, and O-H functional groups may exist. SEM observed the surface morphology of the synthetic material, and Fe and Co can be successfully loaded on the synthetic material. The activation effect of FeCo@N-C activator on PS was significantly improved, and the decoloration removal rate reached 81.66% at 20 min, 57% higher than the PS alone, FeCo@N-C activator had a good pH and temperature adaptability. FeCo@N-C activator could promoted the production of free radicals which can degrade OII efficiently.
