Abstract:Frequency combs with mode spacing in the range of 10 to 20 gigahertz (GHz) are critical for increasingly important applications such as astronomical spectrograph calibration, high-speed dual-comb spectroscopy, and low-noise microwave generation. While electro-optic modulators and microresonators can provide narrowband comb sources at this repetition rate, a significant remaining challenge is a means to produce pulses with sufficient peak power to initiate nonlinear supercontinuum generation spanning hundreds of terahertz (THz) as required for self-referencing in these applications. Here, we provide a simple, robust, and universal solution to this problem using off-the-shelf polarization-maintaining (PM) amplification and nonlinear fiber components. This fiber-integrated approach for nonlinear temporal compression and supercontinuum generation is demonstrated with a resonant electro-optic frequency comb at 1550 nm. We show how to readily achieve pulses shorter than 60 fs at a repetition rate of 20 GHz and with peak powers in excess of 2 kW. The same technique can be applied to picosecond pulses at 10 GHz to demonstrate temporal compression by a factor of 9x yielding 50 fs pulses with peak power of 5.5 kW. These compressed pulses enable flat supercontinuum generation spanning more than 600 nm after propagation through multi-segment dispersion-tailored anomalous-dispersion highly nonlinear fiber (HNLF) or tantala waveguides. The same 10 GHz source can readily achieve an octave-spanning spectrum for self-referencing in dispersion-engineered silicon nitride waveguides. This simple all-fiber approach to nonlinear spectral broadening fills a critical gap for transforming any narrowband 10 to 20 GHz frequency comb into a broadband spectrum for a wide range of applications that benefit from the high pulse rate and require access to the individual comb modes.

Abstract:We proposed and demonstrated a coherent optical frequency comb generation with broadband continuous sweep of repetition rate based on cascaded phase and intensity modulators. Broadband phase matching between electrical drive signals applied on the cascaded phase and intensity modulators is achieved by compensating propagation delay skew between optical signal path and electrical signal path. Therefore, phase mismatch induced flatness deterioration is effectively suppressed. A flat-top 19-line optical frequency comb with repetition rate continuously sweeping over one-octave from 8.5 to 19 GHz is obtained, where the overall power deviation is .

Abstract:Supercontinuum generation in optical fibers is one of the most dramatic nonlinear effects discovered, allowing short pulses to be converted into multi-octave spanning coherent spectra. However, generating supercontinua that are both coherent and broadband requires pulses that are simultaneously ultrashort with high peak power. This results in a reducing efficiency with increasing pulse repetition rate, that has hindered supercontinua at microwave line spacing, i.e. 10s of GHz. Soliton microcombs by contrast, can generate octave-spanning spectra, but with good conversion efficiency only at vastly higher repetition rates in the 100s of GHz. Here, we bridge this efficiency gap with resonant supercontinuum, allowing supercontinuum generation using input pulses with an ultra-low 6 picojoule energy, and duration of 1 picosecond, 10-fold longer than what is typical. By applying synchronous pulse-driving to a dispersion-engineered, low-loss Si$_3$N$_4$ photonic chip microresonator, we generate dissipative Kerr solitons with a strong dispersive wave, both bound to the input pulse. This creates a smooth, flattened 2,200 line frequency comb, with an electronically detectable repetition rate of 28 GHz, constituting the largest bandwidth-line-count product for any microcomb generated to date. Strikingly, we observe that solitons exist in a weakly bound state with the input pulse, stabilizing their repetition rate, but simultaneously allowing noise transfer from one to the other to be suppressed even for offset frequencies 100 times lower than the linear cavity decay rate. We demonstrate that this nonlinear filtering can be enhanced by pulse-driving asynchronously, in order to preserve the coherence of the comb. Taken together, our work establishes resonant supercontinuum as a promising route to broadband and coherent spectra.

Abstract:Compact chip-scale comb sources are of significant interest for many practical applications. Here, we experimentally study the generation of supercontinuum (SC) in an axially varying integrated waveguide. We show that the local tuning of the dispersion enables the continuous blue shift of dispersive waves thanks to their trapping by the strongly compressed pump pulse. This mechanism provides new insight into supercontinuum generation in a dispersion varying integrated waveguide. Pumped close to 2.2 $\mu$m in the femtosecond regime and at a pulse energy of $\sim$ 4 pJ, the output spectrum extends from 1.1 $\mu$m up to 2.76 $\mu$m and shows good coherence properties. Octave-spanning SC is also observed at input energy as low as $\sim$ 0.9 pJ. We show that the supercontinuum is more robust against variations of the input pulse parameters and is also spectrally flatter in our numerically optimized waveguide than in fixed-width waveguides. This research demonstrates the potential of dispersion varying waveguides for coherent SC generation and paves the way for integrated low power applications, such as chip-scale frequency comb generation, precision spectroscopy, optical frequency metrology, and wide-band wavelength division multiplexing in the near-infrared.

Abstract:It is a pivotal step in the measurement of carrier-envelope phase offset frequency in optical femtosecond frequency combs that a stable octave-spanning super-continuum spectrum is generated. In this paper, a home-made Yb:YCOB femtosecond laser pulse is led into a tapered fiber in which some nonlinear effects like self pulse modulation are generated and the four-wave mixing is made to broaden a spectrum to more than one octave-spanning. A Yb:YCOB oscillator emits 130 fs, 620 mW and 76.8 MHz laser pulses, the center wavelength at 1052 nm. Such pulses are focused into a tapered single-mode fiber, and then more than one octave-spanning supercontinuum from 550 nm to 1350 nm has been produced. The coupling efficiency can reach 52% when 323 mW SC laser pulses are detected. Based on the experimental result, a new optical comb will be built with the Yb:YCOB solid state laser as the light source.

Abstract:Broadband supercontinuum (SC) generation in a telecommunication fibre [8/125-mu m single mode fibre (SMF) and 50/125-mu m multimode fibre (MMF)] directly pumped by a nanosecond Q-switched Tm, Ho : YVO4 laser is demonstrated. At a 7-kHz pulse repetition frequency (PRF), an output average power of 0.53 W in the 1.95-2.5-mu m spectral band and 3.51 W in the 1.9-2.6-mu m spectral band are achieved in SMF and MMF, respectively (the corresponding optic-to-optic conversion efficiencies are 34.6 % and 73.7 %). The output spectra have extremely high flat segments in the range 2070-2390 nm and 2070-2475 nm with neglig - ible intensity variation (less than 2%). The SC average power is scalable from 2.1 to 4.2 W by increasing the PRF from 5 to 15 kHz, while maintaining pump power. Compared with the input pump pulse, the output SC pulse width is broadened, and no split is found. The stability of the output SC power has been monitored for a week and the fluctuations being less than 6%.

Abstract:Formating mechanism of supercontinuum generation in highly nonlinear photonic crystal fiber is studied. Using nonlinear polarization rotation technique, a stable femtosecond optical pulse with the central wavelength of 1556.0 nm as pumping source is obtained, and by delivering this pulse into a highly nonlinear photonic crystal fiber, a supercontinuum with the 20 dB bandwith about the 140 nm has been obtained in experiment; Supercontinuum generation in different pump power was experimentally and numerically investigated. It is shown that supercontinuum has the different formatting mechanism with different pump power, and under various nonlinear effects, the more higher of the pump power; the more wide of the supercontinuum. It is found that qualitative agreement between the experiments and the simulations, the simulations shows that it exists an optimal fiber length for generation of the flat, broad supercontinuum. The SC band bandwidth will became smoother and broader by the frequency chirp.

Abstract:We propose a new approach to supercontinuum generation and carrier-envelope-offset detection based on saturated second-order nonlinear interactions in dispersion-engineered nanowaveguides. The technique developed here broadens the interacting harmonics by forming stable bifurcations of the pulse envelopes due to an interplay between phase-mismatch and pump depletion. We first present an intuitive heuristic model for spectral broadening by second-harmonic generation of femtosecond pulses, and show that this model agrees well with experiments. Then, having established strong agreement between theory and experiment, we develop scaling laws that determine the energy required to generate an octave of bandwidth as a function of input pulse duration, device length, and input pulse chirp. These scaling laws suggest that future realization based on this approach could enable supercontinuum generation with orders of magnitude less energy than current state-of-the-art devices.

Abstract:We propose an efficient method to generate an ultra-broadband supercontinuum by using a three-color field synthesized by a 1600 nm driving pulse and two weak (3200 nm and 400 nm) control pulses. The results show that the acceleration and ionization steps in the HHG process are simultaneously controlled in our scheme, which can not only broaden the bandwidth but also enhance the harmonic yields of the generated spectrum. Thus a high-efficiency supercontinuum with the photon energies ranging from 205 eV to 480 eV is observed. Based on our 3D propagation simulations, we show that the short quantum path of the supercontinuum is well phase-matched and can be selected under suitable propagation conditions. Thereby, the modulation due to quantum path interference is largely reduced and intense isolated sub-100 as pulses with tunable central wavelengths are directly obtained within water window spectral region.

Abstract:Supercontinuum generation has received extensive attention because of the innovation of high nonlinear fiber, which makes the supercontinuum system more simple, compact, and efficient. Nonlinear effects are enhanced greatly during the strong interaction between the light and matter in high nonlinear fiber, and the spectrum will be broadened effectively. In this paper, we demonstrate the supercontinuum generation in a photonic crystal fiber and a conventional tapered single-mode fiber pumped by the mode-locked Yb fiber laser. Through the experimental comparison of the supercontinuum spectrum between two kinds of the high nonlinear fibers, the spectral flatness, Raman perturbation, and dispersion wave radiation are discussed for studying the characteristics of supercontinuum generation. Finally, the octave supercontinuum-based both kinds of high nonlinear fibers could be achieved. In particular, the employment of tapered single-mode fiber is proven to be an appropriate candidate for supercontinuum generation and further application.
