Abstract:Using epsilon-near-zero (ENZ) subwavelength optical multilayer materials with simple structure and thin total thickness to achieve target characteristics is extremely important and beneficial for the realization of on-chip integration and large-scale application of optical devices. Combining with the enhanced genetic algorithm (EGA), this work breaks the limitation of the periodicity of traditional ENZ multilayer structures, and investigates the aperiodic ENZ transparent conducting oxide (TCO)-dielectric multilayer structures. It is realized that under the given conditions, an optimal structure can possess a maximum peak absorption and the broadest absorption bandwidth near the communication wavelength. In the 6-layer structure with a total thickness of 600 nm studied in this work, EGA can optimize the peak absorption from 0.91 to 0.95. Additionally, the absorption bandwidth is optimized from 120 nm to 227 nm, which is enhanced more than 180%. The absorption performance of this optimized structure is comparable to that of a more complex structure with the same total thickness but more layers, or a structure with the same number of layers but a larger total thickness. Conclusively, the proposed EGA optimization method can simplify the structure of the multilayer system, reduce the total thickness of the required ENZ material, and thus greatly simplify the production process and reduce the production cost.

Abstract:Optical performances of epsilon near zero (ENZ) material gallium doped zinc oxide (GZO) can be effectively tuned by modulating substrate types, substrate heating temperatures, as well as post-annealing procedures. Four GZO film samples with imaginary part of permittivity & PRIME;& PRIME; at their ENZ wavelengths of & epsilon;ENZ = 0.26, 0.32, 0.50, 0.68 were deposited with radio frequency magnetron sputtering technology, all samples could reach perfect absorption at a certain incident & PRIME;& PRIME; angle and wavelength. A smaller & epsilon;ENZ of GZO film provides narrower bandwidth of near & PRIME;& PRIME; perfect absorption peak (higher Q-factor), while a larger & epsilon;ENZ tends to have a broader bandwidth. & PRIME;& PRIME; Furthermore, the incident angle allowed to achieve perfect absorption is also influenced by & epsilon;ENZ & PRIME;& PRIME; of GZO films. Abstract:Absorptive metamaterials composed of antimony-doped-germanium of different epsilon-near-zero wavelengths and germanium films are designed and fabricated for broadband perfect light absorption around the epsilon-near-zero wavelengths. By integrating two bilayers separated by a semiconductor spacer into a metamaterial structure backed by substrate and gold thick ground plane, we realize more than 93% P-polarized light absorption over a wavelength range of 1.8 microns for an angle of incidence of 40° and a flat-top 75% absorption over a wideband of 1.74 microns for an angle of incidence of 50° in the middle wave infrared region.

Abstract:In this work, a near-perfect broadband absorber, consisting of Fe, MgF2, Fe, TiO2 and MgF2 planar film, is proposed and investigated through simulations and experiments. The Fe material is first applied in the multilayer film structure, and it is proved to be more favorable for achieving broadband absorption. MgF2 and TiO2 are chosen as anti-reflection coatings to decrease unwanted reflections. The proposed absorber is optimized by employing a hybrid numerical method combining the transfer matrix method (TMM) and the genetic algorithm (GA). Under normal incidence conditions, the average absorption of the absorber is 97.6% in the range of 400 to 1400 nm. The finite difference time domain (FDTD) method and phase analysis reveal that the anti-reflection property and the Fabry-Perot resonance result in broadband absorption performance. Furthermore, when an additional Fe-MgF2 layer is inserted on the bottom Fe layer, an average absorption of 97.9% in the range of 400 to 2000 nm can be achieved. Our approach could be of vital significance for numerous applications involving solar energy.

Abstract:The robust designs of broadband extreme ultraviolet multilayers based on the multiobjective genetic algorithm are validated experimentally. In order to reduce the influence of random layer thickness fluctuations on the great deformation of the experimental reflection of extreme ultraviolet multilayer with a wide angular band, the multiobjective genetic algorithm has been improved to optimize the multilayer system composed by the layer thicknesses which can be controlled precisely. The robust designs of broadband Mo/Si multilayers were fabricated, and the experimental results were presented and analyzed, and then the advantage of robust multilayer designs was demonstrated.

Abstract:Perfect infrared absorber with controllable working bandwidth is proposed, consisting of a continuous Au film, a FR-4 spacer, multilayer Dysprosium-doped cadmium oxide (CdO:Dy) film and a gold ring array from bottom to top. In multilayer CdO:Dy materials, multiple ENZ modes are excited by the surface plasmon mode of the gold ring. The ENZ resonance wavelengths, which are controlled by the doping concentration and the layer number of CdO:Dy material, determine the multifrequency or broadband absorption effect of the infrared absorber. In the absorption structure with three ENZ layers, multifrequency absorption occurs depending on the adjustment of coupling strength between localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) and ENZ resonance by parameter optimization and the guarantee of the independence of each ENZ mode by doping concentration gradient expansion. Four narrowband peaks with absorptance more than 92.6 % is produced at 1311 nm, 1560 nm, 1732 nm and 1870 nm, respectively. Increasing the number of CdO:Dy layers to six and controlling the carrier concentration strictly can ensure that the resonance band of ENZ mode is effectively splintered, and broadband response can be generated. The six-ENZ layer absorber exhibits high absorptance (>90 %) between 1556 nm and 1836 nm over an incident angle range of 0–60°. We further illustrate the absorption mechanism by fitting the dielectric function of ENZ material under a six-layer stack. Additionally, via verification, it is shown that the broadband absorber is polarization insensitive. The combination of lithography and deposition makes our absorbers highly practical. This work has great potential in nanophotonics, plasmonics, and physics.

Abstract:An ultra-broadband metamaterial absorber, consisting of 2D SiO2-Ti square bilayer grating on SiO2 film and Ti substrate, is proposed and designed by rigorous coupled wave analysis (RCWA) and genetic algorithm (GA) methods. The optimized structure shows an average absorption of 98.3% in the wavelength range of 300 nm to 2100 nm. Moreover, the metamaterial absorber is polarization-independent and also insensitive to incidence angle for both TM- and TE-polarized waves. The physical mechanisms responsible for nearly perfect broadband absorption, including the Wood's anomaly (WA), cavity resonance (CR), surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) and the resonance of magnetic polaritons (MPs), have been analyzed clearly by finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method and the inductor-capacitor (LC) circuit model. Overall, the proposed metamaterial absorber is a promising candidate in solar applications.

Abstract:In this work, we propose epsilon-near-zero (ENZ) nanoparticles formed of metal and dielectric bilayers and employ the effective medium approach for multilayered nanospheres to study their optical response. We obtained a passive tunable ENZ region by varying the radii of the proposed bilayer nanospheres, ranging from visible to near-IR. In addition, we present the absorption and scattering cross-section of ENZ nanoparticles using an open-source, transfer-matrix-based software (STRATIFY). %, and a commercial FDTD software (LUMERICAL). The proposed ENZ nanoparticle is envisioned to be experimentally realized using chemical synthesis techniques.

Abstract:The unique performances of Epsilon-near-zero (ENZ) materials allow them to play a crucial role in many optoelectronic devices and have spawned a wide range of inventive uses. In this paper, we found that the modified PEDOT:PSS film formed with a kind of so-called "Metastable liquid-liquid Contact (MLLC)" solution treatment method can achieve a wide tuning of ENZ wavelength from 1270 nm to 1550 nm in the near-infrared region. We further analyzed the variation trend of imaginary permittivity for these samples with different ENZ wavelengths. The Berreman mode was successfully excited by a simple structural design to realize a tunable polarization absorber.
Epsilon-near-zero material-based bi-layer metamaterials for selective mid-infrared radiation

Abstract:Selective mid-infrared (MIR) radiation is highly desirable in many applications. However, there are still great challenges to simultaneously achieve MIR camouflage and radiative cooling utilizing simple structure. This work theoretically and experimentally proposes a bi-layer metamaterial composed of aluminum doped zinc oxide (AZO) nanoparticles embedded in Al2O3 matrix on the aluminum film. The bi-layer metamaterial exhibits high performance in MIR camouflage with radiative cooling, a low emissivity (ε (3-5 μm) = 0.11, ε_(8-14 μm)= 0.20) in atmospheric windows and a high emissivity (ε (5-8 μm) = 0.81) in non-atmospheric windows. The interaction of the epsilon-near-zero (ENZ) mode and localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) mode is responsible for the perfect emission over the wavelength range of 5-8 μm. Additionally, the proposed selective MIR emitter supports large-angle incidence and has great polarization insensitivity. This demonstrates that epsilon-near-zero material-based bi-layer metamaterial is highly promising for the development of selective mid-infrared radiation.

Abstract:Abstract We introduce supercritical fluid (SCF) technology to epsilon-near-zero (ENZ) photonics for the first time and experimentally demonstrate the manipulation of the ENZ wavelength for the enhancement of linear and nonlinear optical absorption in ENZ indium tin oxide (ITO) nanolayer. Inspired by the SCF’s applications in repairing defects, reconnecting bonds, introducing dopants, and boosting the performance of microelectronic devices, here, this technique is used to exploit the influence of the electronic properties on optical characteristics. By reducing oxygen vacancies and electron scattering in the SCF oxidation process, the ENZ wavelength is shifted by 23.25 nm, the intrinsic loss is reduced by 20%, and the saturable absorption modulation depth is enhanced by > 30%. The proposed technique offers a time-saving low-temperature technique to optimize the linear and nonlinear absorption performance of plasmonics-based ENZ nanophotonic devices.

Abstract:Epsilon-near-zero (ENZ) optical materials, whose real part of the dielectric constant crosses zero, have been demonstrated to enhance linear and nonlinear optical responses in the ENZ region. Here, a new broadband light absorption design concept based on the coupling of ENZ and localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) modes is proposed. It is verified by a single-layer semi-sphere patterned indium tin oxide (ITO) film based on large-area and low-cost self-assembly technology. Simulation and experimental results show that the 91 nm thick ITO film on the two-dimensional microsphere array can simultaneously excite the ENZ and LSPR modes without complex coupling structures, which enable >98% light absorption in the range of 1435–1680 nm. The perfect absorber based on a corrugated ITO film has typical polarization-independent, large-angular-spectrum, adjustable-absorption-bandwidth, and field-enhanced resonance absorption characteristics. These findings provide a new design solution for low-cost broadband perfect absorbers based on ENZ materials, which have wide prospects for application in near-infrared sensors, photoelectric detection, and ENZ photonics.

Abstract:We propose a broadband, efficient, ultra-thin metal-insulator-metal (MIM) absorber with a simple single-sized disk configuration by utilizing metals with high imaginary part of permittivity (epsilon"). The physics behind this is that field dissipation is remarkably enhanced in MIM absorbers with high-epsilon" metals, significantly extending the absorption bandwidths, which are conventionally limited by magnetic resonances of MIM absorbers with low-epsilon" metals. The experimentally demonstrated MIM absorber based on tungsten with high-epsilon" yields broadband absorption from visible to near-infrared range (400-1700 nm) with an average measured absorption of 84%. The ultra-thin and single-sized nanostructure with broadband efficient absorption facilitates the scalability to largearea photonic applications. Published by AIP Publishing.
Gain-Assisted Giant Third-Order Nonlinearity of Epsilon-Near-Zero Multilayered Metamaterials

Abstract:We investigate the third-order nonlinear optical properties of epsilon-near-zero (ENZ) Au/dye-doped fused silica multilayered metamaterials in the visible spectral range for TM incident by using nonlocal effective medium theory at different incidence angles. The nonlocal response affects the permittivity of anisotropic metamaterials when the thickness of the layer cannot be much smaller than the incident wavelength. By doping pump dye gain material within the dielectric layer to compensate for the metal loss, the imaginary part of the effective permittivity is reduced to 10−4, and the optical nonlinear refractive index and nonlinear absorption coefficient are enhanced. The real and imaginary parts of the permittivity are simultaneously minimized when the central emission wavelength of the gain material is close to the ENZ wavelength, and the nonlinear refraction coefficient reaches the order of 10−5 cm2/W, which is five orders of magnitude larger than that of the nonlinear response of the metamaterial without the gain medium. Our results demonstrate that a smaller imaginary part of the permittivity can be obtained by doping gain materials within the dielectric layer; it offers the promise of designing metamaterials with large nonlinearity at arbitrary wavelengths.

Abstract:We demonstrate epsilon near zero (ENZ) metamaterials operating at visible wavelengths near 660 nm. The structure consists of a multilayer stack composite of alternating layers of Ag and TiO2, 16 nm and 54 nm thick, respectively. We found that a high refractive index material like TiO2 (n ∼ 2.3) is preferable to a lower index material to achieve good “mixing” resulting in a composite that better approximates a homogenous effective medium. Optical spectroscopy shows that transmission and absorption responses are consistent with ENZ behavior and match well with simulations. The transmission reduces with increasing number of multilayer pairs due to metal absorption. We have proposed an ENZ grating structure to boost the optical transmission at the ENZ frequencies. The grating structures have openings that enable potential introduction of gain media to combat losses or nanoscale emitters for light emission control.

Abstract:Coherent perfect absorption increases light absorption to 100% via appropriate interference of waves and provides attractive opportunities for flexible control of light absorption. In this work, we demonstrate that the coherent perfect absorption can be realized using photonic doping of epsilon-near-zero media with both lossless and lossy defects. Based on photonic doping theory, the epsilon-near-zero medium with defects can be homogenized as an effective medium. We find that the lossless defects can tune the effective permeability to be zero, and the lossy defects can further tune the effective permeability to be a pure imaginary value to realize the coherent perfect absorption. Moreover, we show that the doping scheme enables many ways to control absorption, such as multiple channels and multiple doping defects, etc. Our work reveals a unique approach for advanced coherent perfect absorption with flexible control functionalities.

Abstract:Stacked epsilon-near-zero (ENZ)/insulator/ENZ nanocavity has recently emerged as a promising platform to study and engineer mid-infrared (MIR) absorption and emission, as they can be realized by lithography-free fabrication process with fine control on the optical and geometrical parameters. Using Weyl semimetal (WSM) thin film as nonreciprocal materials, we study the absorption, emission and nonreciprocity enhancement induced by a specifically tailored ENZ/WSM/ENZ structure. The nonreciprocity equals to 0.987 with a resonant wavelength of , which confirms an obvious violation of Kirchhoff's law. We also discuss the possibility of tailoring the magnitude and sign of nonreciprocity within the MIR spectrum simply by finely designing the thickness of each layer in the stack. The presented unpatterned configuration and broad tunability of high-quality resonance can work for a wide range of incidence angles, making such proposal with great potential for thermal scavenging and conversion.

Design of periodic wideband pixel absorber by genetic algorithm combined with internal multi‐port method

Abstract:<p>A periodic wideband pixel absorber is designed by genetic algorithm (GA) combined with a fast circuit simulation method, namely, the internal multi‐port method (IMPM). In order to achieve a wideband absorption effect, the pixel connections of the absorber are optimized by GA into three states, that is, metal connection (no loss), disconnection, and lossy connection states. In the optimization, the performance of the pixel absorber is evaluated quickly by the IMPM, rather than by the time‐consuming full wave simulation. To validate the optimization performance, the optimized wideband absorber is simulated, fabricated and measured. The simulation and measurement results show that the absorber can achieve an 85% (5.5‐13.6 GHz) bandwidth with the absorptivity higher than 90%. Besides, the absorber is insensitive to the polarization and incidence angle of the waves.</p>
