Abstract:Resonances in optical cavities are used to manipulate light propagation, enhance light-matter interaction, modulate quantum states, and so on. However, the index contrast between the traditional cavities and the host is generally not high, which to some extent limited their performances. By putting dielectric cavities into a host of zero-index materials, index contrast in principle can approach infinity. Here, we analytically deduced Mie resonance conditions at this extreme circumstance. Interestingly, we discovered a so-called resonance nesting effect, in which a set of cavities with different radii can possess the same type of resonance at the same wavelength. We also revealed previously unknown degeneracy between the 2(l)-TM (2(l)-TE) and 2(l+1)-TE (2(l + 1) -TM) modes for epsilon approximate to 0 (mu approximate to 0) material, and the 2(l)-TM and 2(l)-TE for both epsilon approximate to 0 and mu approximate to 0. Such extraordinary resonance nesting and degeneracy provide additional principles to manipulate cavity behaviors.

Abstract:We investigate the mode characteristic of bilayer spherical dielectric cavities embedded in ZIMs and find the resonance and mode degeneracy effect. Superior to monolayer cavities, the electric field distribution and mode degeneracy of bilayer cavities can be manipulated by changing the geometrical sizes.

Abstract:The dielectric resonances of spherically symmetric micro/nano cavity in zero-index materials have been systematically studied. However, the resonance properties of other shaped dielectric cavities in zero-index materials remain unclear. Here, we theoretically investigate the electromagnetic resonances of the dielectric cavity with cylindrical symmetry in the epsilon-near-zero materials. This kind of cavity supports a set of resonances with strong light confinement, including dipole, quadrupole and higher-order modes with multiple nodes. Furthermore, there is a redshift of the resonance wavelength with an increment of its size, obeying a law as the function of diameter and height. Also, we find that the redshift will be slower for higher-order modes. Through the infinite refractive index contrast and extra degree of freedom, they should have potential application in the enhancement of light-matter interaction and multiple-functional light manipulation in the integrated optical systems.

Abstract:We study the interaction between quasi-modes in dielectric cavities of stadium shape. We show that dependence of two coupled modes on the cavity deformation can be described by the coupled-level model, and extract complex coupling constant. Depending on the value of coupling constant we observe several kinds of quasi-mode evolution.

Abstract:There exist resonance degeneracy and nesting in the spherical dielectric cavity embedded in an infinite zero-index-material (ZIM). However, its spontaneous emission (SE) has been scarcely studied. Here, we investigate the inhibition and enhancement of SE in spherical dielectric cavities surrounded by ZIM at the nanoscale. In the cavities embedded in ε-near-zero material, by adjusting the polarization of the emitter, the SE of the emitter can be controlled from inhibition to enhancement, with Purcell factor ranging from 10-2 to dozens. For the cavities embedded in μ-near-zero or ε-μ-near-zero materials, the enhancement of SE is also obtained in a large range of the cavities. These findings provide more possibilities in single-photon sources, deformable optical devices with ZIM, etc.

Abstract:Advancing resonant nanophotonics requires novel building blocks. Recently, cavities in high-index dielectrics have been shown to resonantly confine light inside a lower-index region. These so-called Mie voids represent a counterpart to solid high-index dielectric Mie resonators, offering novel functionality such as resonant behavior in the ultraviolet spectral region. However, the well-known and highly useful Babinet's principle, which relates the scattering of solid and inverse structures, is not strictly applicable for this dielectric case as it is only valid for infinitesimally thin perfect electric conductors. Here, we show that Babinet's principle can be generalized to dielectric systems within certain boundaries, which we refer to as the quasi-Babinet principle and demonstrate for spherical and more generically shaped Mie resonators. Limitations arise due to geometry-dependent terms as well as material frequency dispersion and losses. Thus, our work not only offers deeper physical insight into the working mechanism of these systems but also establishes simple design rules for constructing dielectric resonators with complex functionalities from their complementary counterparts.

Abstract:In this paper, we developed an efficient method for searching the resonant eigenfrequency of dielectric optical microcavities by the boundary element method. By transforming the boundary integral equation to a general eigenvalue problem for arbitrary, symmetric, and multi-domain shaped optical microcavities, we analyzed the regular motion of the eigenvalues against the frequency. The new strategy can predict multiple resonances, increase the speed of convergence, and avoid non-physical spurious solutions. These advantages greatly reduce the computation time in the search process of the resonances. Moreover, this method is not only valuable for dielectric microcavities, but is also suitable for other photonic systems with dissipations, whose resonant eigenfrequencies are complex numbers.

Abstract:A zero-refractive-index metamaterial is one in which waves do not experience any spatial phase change, and such a peculiar material has many interesting wave-manipulating properties. These materials can in principle be realized using man-made composites comprising metallic resonators or chiral inclusions, but metallic components have losses that compromise functionality at high frequencies. It would be highly desirable if we could achieve a zero refractive index using dielectrics alone. Here, we show that by employing accidental degeneracy, dielectric photonic crystals can be designed and fabricated that exhibit Dirac cone dispersion at the centre of the Brillouin zone at a finite frequency. In addition to many interesting properties intrinsic to a Dirac cone dispersion, we can use effective medium theory to relate the photonic crystal to a material with effectively zero permittivity and permeability. We then numerically and experimentally demonstrate in the microwave regime that such dielectric photonic crystals with reasonable dielectric constants manipulate waves as if they had near-zero refractive indices at and near the Dirac point frequency.
Hybridization of Epsilon-Near-Zero Modes via Resonant Tunneling in Layered Metal/Insulator Double Nanocavities

Abstract:The coupling between multiple nanocavities in close vicinity leads to hybridization of their modes. Stacked Metal/Insulator/Metal (MIM) nanocavities constitute a highly versatile and very interesting model system to study and engineer such mode coupling, since they can be realized by lithography-free fabrication methods with fine control on the optical and geometrical parameters. The resonant modes of such MIM cavities are epsilon-near-zero (ENZ) resonances, which are appealing for non-linear photophysics and a variety of applications. Here we study the hybridization of ENZ resonances in MIMIM nanocavities, obtaining a very large mode splitting reaching 0.477 eV, Q factors of the order of 40 in the visible spectral range, and fine control on the resonance wavelength and mode linewidth by tuning the thickness of the dielectric and metallic layers. A semi-classical approach that analyses the MIMIM structure as a double quantum well system allows to derive the exact analytical dispersion relation of the ENZ resonances, achieving perfect agreement with numerical simulations and experiments. Interestingly, the asymmetry of the mode splitting in a symmetric MIMIM cavity is not reflected in the classical model of coupled oscillators, which can be directly related to quantum mechanical tunneling for the coupling of the two cavities. Interpreting the cavity resonances as resonant tunneling modes elucidates that can be excited without momentum matching techniques. The broad tunability of high-quality ENZ resonances together with their strong coupling efficiency makes such MIMIM cavities an ideal platform for exploring light-matter interaction, for example, by integration of quantum emitters in the dielectric layers.

Abstract:High-index dielectric or semiconductor structures support electric and magnetic Mie resonances. By judiciously designing the geometry parameters, destructive interference can be induced between electric multipole moments and toroidal multipole moments, and thus lead to the formation of anapole, which is characterized by the quenched scattering in the far field and giant enhancement in the near field. Here, we revisit the formation mechanism of anapole states in a single dielectric structure with high refractive index from eigenmode perspective. We find that scattering efficiency is mainly determined by the intrinsic phase that is governed by the leaky mode of structure and extrinsic phase induced by the frequency deviation from resonance. It is also demonstrated that the anapole modes in a 2D cylinder and 3D sphere can only occur in the following two situations:(1) When only one mode is involved, the combined phase of intrinsic and extrinsic phase should be equal to 2π at certain frequency (anapole frequency), which is very close to the resonance frequency. Generally, this type of anapoles are low-order anapoles since low-order resonant modes (ie, magnetic (electric) dipole and quadrupole) are well separated. (2) If two or more leaky modes are involved, the combined phase for each mode must be 2π at the same frequency 1which is located between two resonances. This corresponds to the high-order anapoles. It is also found that more anapole states will emerge with increasing refractive index. Our results may provide new perspective in designing high-order anapoles with more freedom.

Abstract:The coupling effects of subwavelength high-permittivity (epsilon(r) > 100) arrayed ceramics which exhibit magnetic and electric Mie resonances are investigated by electromagnetic full-wave analysis. Special attention was paid to the symmetry properties of both magnetic-and electric-induced dipoles by varying independently the array periodicity. In agreement with the interactions between electric and magnetic dipoles, it is shown that resonance frequency shifts toward lower (higher) frequencies can be obtained, which depends on the longitudinal (transverse) dipole coupling strengths. Moreover, the emergence of quasi-bound states between tightly coupled basic cells is pointed out for the electric Mie resonances, which shows an unexpected frequency shift with a reverse variation.

Abstract:Extensive research has focused on Mie modes in dielectric nanoresonators, enabling the creation of thin optical devices surpassing their bulk counterparts. This study investigates the interactions between two fundamental Mie modes, electric and magnetic dipoles, and the epsilon-near-zero (ENZ) mode. Analytical, simulation, and experimental analyses reveal that the presence of the ENZ substrate significantly modifies these modes despite a large size mismatch. Electric and magnetic dipole modes, both with ∼12 THz line widths, exhibit 21 and 26 THz anticrossings, respectively, when coupled to the ENZ mode, indicating strong coupling. We also demonstrate that this strongly coupled system yields notably large subpicosecond nonlinear responses. Our results establish a solid foundation for designing functional, nonlinear, dynamic dielectric metasurfaces with ENZ materials.

Abstract:Metal/Insulator/Metal nanocavities (MIMs) are highly versatile systems for nanometric light confinement and waveguiding, and their optical properties are mostly interpreted in terms of surface plasmon polaritons. Although classic electromagnetic theory accurately describes their behavior, it often lacks physical insight, letting some fundamental aspects of light interaction with these structures unexplored. In this work, we elaborate a quantum mechanical description of the MIM cavity as a double barrier quantum well. We identify the square of the imaginary part of the refractive index of the metal as the optical potential, and find that MIM cavity resonances are suppressed if the ratio n/\k{appa} exceeds a certain limit, which shows that low n and high \k{appa} are desired for strong and sharp cavity resonances. Interestingly, the spectral regions of cavity mode suppression correspond to the interband transitions of the metals, where the optical processes are intrinsically non-Hermitian. The quantum treatment allows to describe the tunnel effect for photons, and reveals that the MIM cavity resonances can be excited by resonant tunneling via illumination through the metal, without the need of momentum matching techniques such as prisms or grating couplers. By combining this analysis with spectroscopic ellipsometry on experimental MIM structures, and by developing a simple harmonic oscillator model of the MIM for the calculation of its effective permittivity, we show that the cavity eigenmodes coincide with low-loss zeros of the effective permittivity.

Chaos-assisted Free-Space Coupling and Transmission Spectra of High-Q Deformed Microcavities

Abstract:We investigate the efficient free-space excitation of high-Q resonance modes in deformed microcavities via dynamical tunneling-assisted coupling. A quantum scattering theory is employed to study the free-space transmission properties, and it is found that the transmission includes the contribution from (1) the off-resonance background and (2) the on-resonance modulation, corresponding to the absence and presence of high-Q modes, respectively. The theory predicts asymmetric Fano-like resonances around high-Q modes in background transmission spectra, which are in good agreement with our recent experimental results. Dynamical tunneling across Kolmogorov-Arnold-Moser tori is further studied, which plays an essential role in the Fano-like resonance. This efficient free-space coupling holds potential advantages in simplifying experimental condition and exciting high-Q modes in higher-index-material microcavities.

Abstract:We report on the role of the coupling of the modes of Mie resonances in all-dielectric metamaterials to ensure negative effective index at terahertz frequencies. We study this role according to the lattice period and according to the frequency overlapping of the modes of resonance. We show that negative effective refractive index requires sufficiently strong mode coupling and that for even more strong mode coupling, the first two modes of Mie resonances are degenerated; the effective refractive index is then undeterminded. We also show that adjusting the mode coupling leads to near-zero effective index, or even null effective index. Further, we compare the mode coupling effect with hybridization in metamaterials.

Abstract:Based on the Mie scattering theory, we study optical resonances with whispering gallery modes (WGMs) in tubular microcavities. Rigorous formulas are present to obtain resonant wavelengths and Q factors for the WGM resonances. It is found that the Q factors of microtubes can be dramatically increased by increasing the dielectric constants in tube walls. For common SiO/SiO2 based microtubes, Q factors can be improved by one order when the microtubes are coated with thin high-index HfO2 layers (n = 1.95, thickness = 10 nm). The results could be useful for designing better optical devices based on tubular microcavities.

Abstract:Based on previous conceptions, there is only a homogeneous field in zero-index metamaterials (ZIMs). However, in this paper, It is found that when higher modes such as dipole, quadrupole, or octopole patterns are excited in a structure through cavity of ZIMs, there will generate an inhomogeneous pressure field in the ZIMs. In addition, when the resonance of the monopole or higher mode is excited in the cavity, a very intense pressure field will develop, such that the radiation of the source in the cavity is enhanced as compared to that of a source in free space without the ZIM cavities. Compared to classic local resonances achieved by Helmholtz resonators and membranes, the resonances in such a structure are more suitable for manipulating wave radiation owing to the significantly richer resonant modes. Furthermore, the proposed structure can be used to control sound radiation patterns and obtain directive radiation.

Abstract:Dielectric Mie nanoresonators showing strong light-matter interaction at the nanoscale may enable new functionality in photonic devices, such as strong magneto-optical effects. However, most reports so far have been focused on the enhancement of conventional magneto-optical effects. Here, anomalous magneto-optical effects are observed in high-index-contrast Si/Ce:YIG/YIG/SiO2 Mie resonators. In particular, giant modulation of light intensity in transverse magnetic configuration up to 6.4% under s-polarized incidence appears, which is non-existent in planar magneto-optical thin films. A large rotation of transmitted light polarization in longitudinal magnetic configuration is also observed, which is two orders of magnitude higher than for planar magneto-optical thin films. These phenomena are originated from the unique circular displacement current when exciting magnetic resonances in the Mie resonators, which change the electric field direction locally. This work indicates an uncharted territory of light polarization control based on complex modal profiles in all-dielectric magneto-optical Mie resonators and metasurfaces.
Quality factor of dielectric optical resonators

Abstract:We show analytically that the quality ($Q$) factor of magnetic and electric Mie modes in a lossless dielectric spherical resonator with high refractive index ($n \gg 1$) scales as $n^{2j+1}$ and $n^{2j+3}$ respectively, where $j$ denotes the multipolar order. We numerically validate these results and show that our high-$n$ analytical relation is accurate for the dipolar modes when $n>5$. For higher multipolar orders, the analytical relation becomes valid for increasingly lower $n$. We study the dependence of the $Q$ factor on absorption losses and determine a general functional form that describes the $Q$ factor for all Mie modes for any complex refractive index. Finally, we observe that this functional form predicts a multipolar-dependent singular value of optical gain which gives rise to a lasing condition with an infinite $Q$ factor.
